Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, image processing has witnessed extraordinary advancements, transitioning from conventional techniques to sophisticated methodologies that harness deep learning, attention mechanisms, and multimodal fusion strategies. The integration of artificial intelligence with image processing has revolutionized a diverse range of domains, including artistic creation, remote sensing, medical imaging, environmental monitoring, and industrial automation. Current research trends reflect a growing focus on developing attention-based networks, transformer architectures, and multi-scale feature extraction methods—all designed to effectively tackle complex imaging challenges such as low contrast, noise interference, and domain adaptation issues.
Therefore, we cordially invite submissions that explore cutting-edge image processing techniques and their practical applications across diverse domains. We particularly welcome research focusing on novel neural network architectures for image enhancement, segmentation, generation, and classification; multimodal fusion strategies that integrate information from varied imaging sources; attention mechanisms for feature extraction; and innovative approaches to tackle domain-specific challenges in artistic creation, medical imaging, remote sensing, and industrial imaging applications.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Multimodal-driven image processing techniques;
- Multimodal action and activity recognition;
- Application in human–computer interaction and autonomous driving;
- Deep learning for image synthesis, restoration, and super-resolution;
- Real-time embedded image processing for edge devices;
- Super-resolution and image reconstruction methodologies;
- Transformer-based models for visual understanding;
- Domain adaptation and transfer learning for cross-domain image processing;
- Unsupervised and semi-supervised learning for image classification;
- Industrial inspection and quality control;
- Cross-modal attention for image–text retrieval and understanding;
- Image processing in digital art—style transfer and interactive generation;
- Remote sensing image processing for environmental monitoring;
- Explainable AI in image processing—model interpretability;
- Image denoising techniques for complex noise patterns;
- Image-based object tracking with adaptive motion prediction;
- Image processing for augmented reality and virtual reality applications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
