Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Wood science is evolving at a remarkable pace as researchers and practitioners increasingly bridge traditional knowledge with innovative, practical applications. The field of applied wood science plays a pivotal role in addressing contemporary challenges, from sustainable construction and advanced engineered materials to environmental conservation, bioenergy production, and the preservation of cultural heritage objects. This Special Issue of Applied Science is dedicated to showcasing pioneering research that translates fundamental wood science into real-world solutions.
We invite submissions that emphasise the “applied” dimension of wood science, including, but not limited to, topics such as:
- Advanced Wood-Based Materials and Composites: Innovative processing techniques, chemical and physical modifications, and the development of high-performance, sustainable wood composites.
- Structural Applications and Engineering: Novel approaches to the design, testing, and simulation of wood structures, as well as insights into their durability, fire behaviour, and mechanical performance.
- Wood Processing and Conversion Technologies: Cutting-edge wood preservation, treatment, and conversion methodologies that enhance efficiency and product quality.
- Environmental and Sustainability Aspects: Life cycle assessments, eco-friendly practices, and renewable resource management in wood utilisation.
- Cultural Heritage Applications: Innovative methods and technologies for the preservation, restoration, and conservation of wood in archaeological and cultural heritage objects, ensuring both structural integrity and historical authenticity.
- Interdisciplinary Approaches: Integrating digital technologies, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and quantitative wood anatomy to improve wood characterisation and processing.
This Special Issue aims to present high-quality, original research papers that advance our theoretical understanding of wood science and have clear, practical implications for industry, construction, environmental stewardship, and cultural heritage preservation. By fostering dialogue between academia and practitioners, we hope to inspire collaborative efforts that drive innovation and sustainable development in wood and wood-based products.
We look forward to your contributions and the opportunity to highlight transformative advancements in applied wood science.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
