Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to our Special Issue, which focuses on advances in the application of metrology to Industry 4.0 and the IoT.
Metrology, the science of measurement, plays a crucial role in the advancement of technologies that underpin modern manufacturing systems, particularly in the context of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT). As industries evolve towards more automated, interconnected, and data-driven processes, the provision of precise and reliable measurement systems is becoming increasingly vital.
In this context, this Special Issue aims to highlight the latest advancements in metrology for Industry 4.0 and IoT.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
- Precision and Accuracy: Advanced metrology techniques are essential for ensuring the precision and accuracy of measurements in automated and interconnected environments.
- Data Integration: Metrology systems must integrate seamlessly with IoT devices to collect and analyze data in real time, enabling better decision-making and process optimization.
- Automation: The adoption of automated measurement systems helps reduce human error, increase efficiency, and facilitate the continuous monitoring of production processes.
- Real-Time Monitoring: IoT-enabled sensors and devices enable the continuous monitoring of equipment and processes, leading to proactive maintenance and reduced downtime.
- Standardization and Calibration: Standardizing measurement practices and ensuring the proper calibration of instruments are crucial for maintaining consistency and reliability in measurements across smart factories.
- Cybersecurity: As metrology systems become more interconnected, ensuring the security of data and devices against cyber threats is increasingly important.
- Sustainability: Metrology can also contribute to sustainability by optimizing resource usage and minimizing waste in manufacturing processes.
In summary, Metrology plays a vital role in the success of Industry 4.0 and IoT by enhancing measurement capabilities, enhancing process control, and enabling smarter decision-making.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
