Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid evolution of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies is fundamentally reshaping urban environments, giving rise to a new generation of intelligent, responsive, and sustainable cities. This Special Issue aims to compile cutting-edge research and innovation at the intersection of IoT, data science, and urban management. It seeks to address the pressing challenges and opportunities in deploying scalable, secure, and interoperable IoT frameworks that enhance urban living.
We invite original research articles, reviews, and case studies that explore novel architectures, models, and real-world implementations of IoT-enabled smart city solutions. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Advanced IoT architectures and communication protocols (e.g., 5G/6G, LPWAN, edge-fog-cloud computing) for urban scalability.
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for IoT data analytics, predictive modeling, and autonomous decision-making in urban systems.
- Cybersecurity, privacy-preserving techniques, and trusted frameworks for resilient smart city infrastructure.
- IoT-enabled sustainable urban management: smart energy grids, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), environmental monitoring (air/water quality, waste management), and water resource management.
- Digital twins, immersive technologies (VR/AR), and spatial computing for urban planning, simulation, and citizen engagement.
- Interoperability, standardization, and integration of heterogeneous IoT platforms and legacy urban systems.
- Case studies and pilot deployments demonstrating measurable improvements in efficiency, sustainability, resilience, and quality of life.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
