Emerging Technologies for Metallic Materials Processing
This special issue belongs to the section “Materials Science and Engineering“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In a period of exceptionally dynamic technological development, metal processing is undergoing intensive transformation. Modern industry faces ever-increasing demands regarding the quality, functionality and sustainability of production, which means that conventional metal manufacturing methods are often no longer sufficient. Greater precision in microstructure design, the ability to produce materials with complex properties and processes that optimize costs while reducing environmental impact are increasingly required. In response to these needs, a wide range of emerging technologies that not only expand the capabilities of classical methods but also introduce a completely new quality to metallic materials processing is being developed.
Emerging technologies encompass a wide range of advanced processing routes, including innovative approaches to plastic deformation and heat treatment, field-assisted techniques such as spark plasma sintering and various hybrid or multi-physics methods that integrate mechanical, thermal, chemical or external physical fields. The combination of well-established processes with innovative concepts enables the effective design of material structures already at the manufacturing stage, which in turn leads to the development of alloys and architectures with unique properties. This applies, for example, to materials with enhanced strength, improved fatigue resistance, increased thermal stability or functional characteristics tailored to specific applications.
At the same time, innovative processing routes facilitate the development of new classes of materials, including gradient, layered, ultrafine-grained and composite structures, that are difficult or impossible to obtain using traditional methods. Many of these technologies also improve energy efficiency, reduce waste generation and support the implementation of more environmentally friendly production strategies, meeting the growing expectations associated with green and sustainable technologies.
The aim of this Special Issue is to present the latest research results and provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience among researchers and engineers working on emerging technologies in metallic-materials processing.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
