Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Frozen soil engineering challenges are inherently multi-physics and multi-scale in nature, involving strong coupling among thermal, hydraulic, mechanical, and chemical processes, as well as water–ice phase transitions. Scientific and engineering challenges span from the microscale (e.g., frozen soil microstructure, ice lens nucleation and growth, cryo-suction, and particle–ice interactions) to the field scale (foundations, tunnels, embankments, slopes, pipelines, and other cold-regions infrastructure). Addressing these challenges demands coordinated advances in theory, experimentation, computation, and field observation across earth science, environmental science, remote sensing, and engineering practices.

This Special Issue aims to promote interdisciplinary integration by bringing together original contributions on the following topics:

  • Mechanical properties of cold-regions geomaterials and frozen-soil physics;
  • Multi-physics coupling theories and numerical methods;
  • Interaction between cold-regions infrastructures and the environment;
  • Permafrost degradation and cold-regions geohazards;
  • Testing techniques and equipment for cold-regions geotechnics;
  • New theories and technologies for artificial ground freezing;
  • Remote sensing for cold-regions geotechnical engineering.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
