Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Wireless communications and networked systems are undergoing a significant transformation, promoted by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout all layers of communication infrastructure. From radio resource management and signal processing to end-to-end network optimization, AI is stimulating innovation. The integration of AI with emerging wireless technologies such as 5G and 6G has led to the development of intelligent and adaptive communication systems that are capable of functioning effectively in complex, dynamic, and data-rich environments.
This wave of change is not limited to terrestrial networks. Advanced applications are now expanding into satellite communications, underwater and acoustic systems, and remote sensing. Notably, image processing and machine learning are enabling breakthroughs in ocean plastic monitoring, environmental surveillance, and space-based Earth observation. These developments are vital for achieving global sustainability goals and developing smart cities, where real-time connectivity and intelligent data analysis are essential.
The adoption of AI technologies such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, and federated learning is transforming vehicular networks, Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructures, and cyber–physical systems. As wireless systems become more diverse and autonomous, there is an urgent need for research that supports robust, scalable, and intelligent communication architectures.
This Special Issue seeks high-quality research contributions and comprehensive reviews that examine recent advances and future directions in this rapidly evolving field. We welcome theoretical innovations, simulations, system designs, and experimental validations that demonstrate the transformative potential of AI in wireless communication systems across various applications.
The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
- Machine learning and deep learning for wireless signal processing;
- AI-enabled optimization in 5G/6G systems;
- Intelligent resource allocation and spectrum management;
- AI for underwater and acoustic communication networks;
- Remote sensing and satellite communications enhanced by AI;
- Federated learning in wireless sensor networks;
- Vehicular networks and AI-assisted autonomous communication;
- AI-driven network security and intrusion detection;
- AI-based environmental monitoring and ocean plastic detection;
- Smart city communications and AI-based infrastructure planning;
- Cross-layer design and intelligent network architecture;
- Image processing and computer vision in communication systems;

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
