Applications of AI and Robotics in Healthcare

This special issue belongs to the section “Computing and Artificial Intelligence“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are transforming healthcare by enhancing clinical accuracy, efficiency, and patient outcomes. AI-powered diagnostic systems can analyze medical images, laboratory data, and electronic health records to detect diseases earlier and more precisely than traditional methods. These tools assist clinicians in identifying conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurological disorders, often flagging subtle patterns that humans may overlook.

In treatment planning, AI supports personalized medicine by predicting how individual patients will respond to specific therapies, enabling more targeted and effective care. Robotics plays a major role in surgical settings, where robotic-assisted systems provide greater precision, stability, and minimally invasive techniques. These advances reduce surgical complications, shorten hospital stays, and improve recovery times. In rehabilitation, robotic exoskeletons and assistive devices help patients regain mobility after injuries or strokes.

AI-powered virtual assistants and chatbots enhance patient engagement by offering symptom triage, medication reminders, and remote monitoring. Combined with wearable devices, AI enables continuous health tracking and early detection of deterioration in chronic conditions. Overall, the integration of AI and robotics is reshaping healthcare delivery, making it more proactive, precise, and patient-centered.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • AI-driven early disease detection using multimodal data (imaging, genomics, EHRs);
  • Robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery with autonomous or semi-autonomous capabilities;
  • AI for personalized treatment planning in oncology, cardiology, and rare diseases;
  • Robotic exoskeletons for rehabilitation, including adaptive control based on patient progress;
  • Medical imaging enhancement using generative AI for noise reduction, reconstruction, and segmentation;
  • Human–robot interaction in clinical environments, focusing on safety, trust, and workflow integration;
  • AI-powered remote patient monitoring using wearables and predictive analytics for early intervention;
  • Autonomous hospital logistics robots for supply delivery, disinfection, and patient transport;
  • Ethical and regulatory frameworks for deploying AI and robotics in high-risk healthcare settings;
  • AI-enabled robotic companions for elder care, mental-health support, and long-term home assistance.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
