Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and data analytics are progressively transforming traditional approaches to industrial engineering. These technologies are integral to a growing number of applications, such as autonomous robots, smart city design, the Internet of Things (IoT), and intelligent facility management, where they play critical roles across different stages of the engineering lifecycle.
Despite their significant potential, the adoption of modern AI and ML techniques for emerging engineering problems is often hindered by performance uncertainties and challenges in interpreting the underlying physical and mathematical principles of algorithms. While a well-implemented AI-enabled sensing system is recognized as a key factor in efficient engineering projects, these obstacles remain. Existing research has addressed numerous issues, yet concerns continue to emerge with rapid technological advancements and shifting client demands.
This Special Issue establishes an international forum for exchanging the latest research findings on AI, ML, and data analytics applied in industrial engineering challenges. It distinguishes itself by focusing specifically on the intersection of novel methodologies and their practical applications in response to current gaps. Highlighting emergent methods and systems, with this Special Issue we aim to cover topics including, but not limited to:
- The integration of AI in industrial engineering problems;
- Information modeling for smart cities;
- Automatic and robotic devices;
- Human–computer interactions in industrial engineering;
- AI in engineering management technologies;
- Recent developments in IoT technology;
- Big data analysis for industrial engineering applications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
