Dear Colleagues,
Professor Matthew Falagas has made substantial contributions in the field of antimicrobial resistance and the treatment of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. After receiving his medical degree (MD) from the University of Athens School of Medicine, Athens, Greece, he completed specialty training in internal medicine and infectious diseases in the US (at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts). Additionally, he pursued research training at Tufts University School of Medicine and Harvard University, both in Boston, Massachusetts. He is an American board-certified internist and Infectious Disease Specialist. He also has a master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology (MSc) from Harvard University School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts, and a doctorate (DSc) from the University of Athens School of Medicine, Athens, Greece. He has authored more than 700 articles that have garnered more than 100,000 citations. His current H-index is 153. He has peer-reviewed papers for numerous high-impact journals in infectious diseases, microbiology, and internal medicine. His research work has had a significant impact on antibiotic stewardship and the management of patients with difficult-to-treat infections. He has made a landmark contribution to the revival of intravenous polymyxins (colistin and polymyxin B) and fosfomycin for the management of patients with MDR infections. Additionally, he has emphasized the need for the international harmonization of definitions of MDR, extensively drug-resistant (XDR), and pandrug-resistant (PDR) bacterial infections in several publications and lectures at international meetings. He has guided the academic and clinical careers of many doctors, who now hold significant positions at academic centers around the world and are successful in clinical practice. He is also recognized for his compassionate manner with patients, who describe him as a knowledgeable, capable, and approachable doctor, and one with empathy.
