Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The transition from traditional genomic selection to precision molecular breeding requires a deep understanding of the functional landscape of the livestock genome. While genome-wide association studies have identified numerous genetic variants associated with economic traits, the underlying molecular mechanisms—particularly how these variants regulate gene expression and biological pathways—remain largely unresolved. 

This Special Issue, “Functional Genomics and Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Livestock Economic Traits,” aims to highlight research that uncover the functional roles of genes and the molecular pathways governing key production traits in major livestock species, including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry. The issue places particular emphasis on studies that move beyond association analyses to provide mechanistic insights and functional validation.

We welcome original research articles and reviews focusing on the following:

(1) Functional characterization of candidate genes associated with economic traits

(2) Molecular mechanisms regulating economic traits

(3) Identification and functional validation of key variants

(4) Omics data to elucidate gene regulatory networks

(5) Epigenetic regulation and gene expression dynamics in livestock traits

By focusing on functional genomics and molecular mechanisms, this Special Issue seeks to bridge the gap between genetic variation and phenotypic expression, providing a mechanistic foundation for precision breeding in livestock.
