Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to contribute to our Special Issue on the “Latest Advances in Neutering and Reproduction Control in Dogs”. Advancing our understanding of this subject will allow us to effectively manage animals, promote optimum health and wellbeing, and maximise animal welfare. Further research in this area is important to continue to build knowledge, informing the best practices for reproduction control.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to present the latest research in the field of neutering and the control of reproduction in dogs, considering impacts on dog behaviour and health and focusing on the latest methods of reproduction control, particularly looking at the use of GnRH agonists and the potential beneficial and detrimental effects of long-term use as an alternative to surgical methods of reproduction. We welcome original research articles and reviews that cover a wide range of themes, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • The impact of neutering, and neutering at different times, on reproductive hormones in bitches and the role of these in development of disease;
  • Understanding the mechanisms underpinning the influence of reproductive hormones on tissues that lead to the development of disease;
  • Alternative methods of reproduction control that do not disrupt the anterior hypothalamus;
  • The long-term impacts of using GnRH agonists to delay puberty;
  • The risks and benefits of the long-term use of GnRH analogues as a medical strategy to potentially replace or delay neutering.

We look forward to receiving your contributions and sharing your exciting and innovative research to improve dog welfare.
