Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Boar semen quality is one of the important factors for successful artificial insemination in pig farms. Fresh boar semen quality is affected by many factors such as housing, environment, nutrition, and diseases. Therefore, best practice and good management are needed to maintain and improve their semen quality. Preservation of both fresh and frozen semen are of interest for the transportation from boar stations to breeder pig farms and also for the export of semen of superior genetics across countries. Bacterial contamination during semen collection is the primary source of contaminated semen, leading to the usage of antibiotics in semen extender in order to control the bacterial growth during preservation; however, antibiotic resistance is of high concern in terms of food safety and one health approach. Antimicrobial proteins and alternatives to antibiotics are considered necessary for the future.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collect research studies that relate to the following topics: fresh boar semen preservation; cryopreservation; new techniques for semen evaluation; oxidative stress and antioxidants; semen extender development; alternatives to antibiotics; housing and environmental management; and boar management.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Reproductive physiology;
  • Mycotoxins and semen quality;
  • Feed supplementation and semen quality;
  • In vitro ferritization.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
