Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Weather is a fundamental external factor influencing the safety, efficiency, and resilience of the aviation system across all operational domains, including commercial air transport, on-demand operations, and general aviation. Atmospheric phenomena such as wind, turbulence, convection, icing, fog, reduced visibility, and extreme temperatures affect aircraft performance, airport capacity, air traffic management, and operational decision making at all stages of flight. While modern aviation systems are designed to operate safely under a wide range of meteorological conditions, adverse and rapidly changing weather remains a dominant contributor to delays, disruptions, and safety critical events.

Multiple studies have shown that weather is a leading cause of air traffic delays and cancelations worldwide and that it plays a significant role in both accident and incident statistics, particularly in general aviation and regional operations. Weather-related hazards rarely act in isolation. Instead, their impact emerges from complex interactions between atmospheric conditions, aircraft capabilities, operational procedures, infrastructure limitations, and human decision-making. Inadequate weather awareness, uncertainty in forecasts, misinterpretation of meteorological information, and limited integration of weather data into operational planning and real-time decision support systems have repeatedly been identified as contributing factors in weather-affected aviation events.

Recent advances in meteorological sensing, numerical weather prediction, data driven modeling, and digital decision support offer new opportunities to better anticipate, mitigate, and manage weather impacts on aviation operations. At the same time, increasing traffic demand, tighter operational margins, and the expected effects of climate change are likely to amplify the sensitivity of the aviation system to weather-related disturbances.

This Special Issue on Weather Impact on Aviation invites high quality contributions addressing the observation, modeling, prediction, and operational management of weather effects across the aviation system. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: weather-related safety risks, operational disruptions, airport and airspace capacity impacts, weather integration in air traffic management, pilot and controller decision making under adverse weather, and the use of advanced analytics, machine learning, and digital twins to support weather-resilient aviation operations.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Aerospace is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
