Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues, 

In this Special Issue of ChemEngineering we are welcoming the submission of original research and critical reviews that contribute to the advancement of (bio)chemical & materials engineering beyond sustainability (i.e. regeneration) within the emerging disciplines of biofabrication and biomanufacturing. While the language surrounding these terms continues to develop, biofabrication is often thought of as “growing” complex & functional materials from what are often “living” biological components (e.g., mycelial leather), while biomanufacturing often aims to “scale-up” biological processes (e.g., precision fermentation). In other words, we are seeking contributions that will help shape the future of biotechnology beyond our current chemicals, materials, and food sectors. Contributions which mindfully consider human & non-human relationships within the discussion of a given technology are strongly encouraged. 

Research areas may include and are not limited to:  

  • Engineering of living materials & systems
  • Design, characterization and/or application of bioprocesses
  • Biodesign integration
  • Genetic engineering, strain engineering, & synthetic biology  
  • Biomolecular material engineering, advanced materials
  • (Bio)synthesis of (bio)chemicals and polymers
  • Interdisciplinary perspectives on regenerative processes (beyond sustainability), how processes might work with nature rather than exploit them, system integration, and applications of AI 

We are particularly interested in receiving interdisciplinary studies that integrate the above topics.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. ChemEngineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
