Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The modernization and sophistication of present society has resulted in the production of larger quantities of wastewaters (WWs) that are more concentrated and potentially harmful to receiving aquatic environment, requiring immediate treatment.

WW treatment involves removal from domestic WW of solids, specific chemical species and different toxics. Requirements for industrial uses vary widely cause of concerns due to corrosion, scale formation, bacterial growth in pipes and cooling towers, removal of difficult to decompose organic residuals, oils, grease, heavy metals, salts, toxins or caustic substances. Therefore, produced WW requires pre-treatment prior to discharge into urban WW treatment plant, or multi-stage treatment if is discharged directly into aquatic receptor by using modern mechanical, physical-chemical and biological WW treatment equipment, and also sludge treatment and disposal systems.

Many communities or industries must provide modern WW treatment systems that can remove toxics, non-biodegradable or not easily to remove organics by conventional WW treatment processes, and also growth stimulants by using advanced treatment processes, recycling or reuse facilities without negative effects on population and environment.

Modern engineering responsibility for WW treatment begins with determination and permanent control of necessary or desirable treatment level and extends to design and operation systems. Worldwide, a large variety of modern technologies can be adapted for specific WW treatment, the most efficient and economic solution being usually selected.

For this Special Issue, researchers can report findings, specific experience over years or express personal opinion facing the market, laboratory experiments, and innovative, commercial and practicable treatment solutions linked with domestic/industrial WW or sludge by using modern concepts in problem identification, conceptional design, laboratory analysis, pilot testing, monitoring and evaluation, process engineering and management, installations and services, advanced treatment technologies, modeling and optimization, among others.
