Interview with Dr. Jieyun Wu, Editorial Board Member of Optics

The following is an interview with Dr. Jieyun Wu, who shared his academic background, his involvement with Optics (ISSN: 2673-3269) and his vision for the journal:

1. Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself and your academic background and what are your current interests?

I am Jieyun Wu from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). I received my B.S. degree from Nankai University in 2008 and Ph.D. degree from the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Science in 2013. After that, I joined UESTC, where I am currently an associate professor in optical engineering. From 2014 to 2015, I carried out visiting research at the University of Washington (Seattle) in organic/polymeric electro-optic materials under the supervision of Prof. Alex. Jen and Jingdong Luo. In 2018, I spent six months in Prof. Chiang Kin Seng’s group at the Department of Electronic Engineering, City University of Hong Kong.

In addition to research, I serve as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Optics and Photonics Research, a Young Editorial Member of the journal Chip, and an Editorial Board Member of the journal Optics. My current research interests include hybrid waveguides for electro-optic modulation and biochemical sensing.

2. Which research topics do you think will be of particular interest to the research community in the coming years?

The explosive growth in data capacity brought about by the AI era will create significant opportunities. In the future, high-speed photonic integrated chips will play an indispensable role in the AI landscape. I believe that high-speed electro-optic modulators with low power consumption will be in great demand, making them a key research focus in the coming years. Additionally, I see strong potential in photonic computing based on integrated chips, which can effectively address the current limitations of electronic computing. I am also excited about the potential application of photonic integrated chips in biomedical diagnostics, such as early cancer screening and health monitoring.

3. What are your plans and vision for the journal?

I am deeply honored to join the Editorial Board of Optics. I am always happy to serve the academic community and contribute to the dissemination of scientific and technological advancements. I will do my best to promote Optics and enhance its impact in the field of optics.

4. In your opinion, what can authors expect when they submit to Optics?

Optics is an international, interdisciplinary journal that publishes cutting-edge research in optics and photonics. Our journal follows a gold open access model, ensuring that articles published with us are widely accessible. As a member of the editorial team, I can assure authors that we will handle submissions swiftly and conduct reviews efficiently. We are committed to fair and unbiased assessments, ensuring timely and transparent publication.
