Cover Story: Underwater images captured at deep water sites where artificial lighting is employed often possess dark regions that can hide valuable information which is critical for automated and manual imagery analysis. We proposed a single-image framework that uses a novel contrast-guided technique, along with the dark channel prior-based dehazing mechanism, to greatly enhance the visibility and overall quality of low-lighting underwater images. A new openly-accessible dataset, OceanDark, provides examples of scenes to which the method is applied and serves as a basis for evaluation. The proposed method’s efficacy is highlighted in a comparison with four state-of-the-art image enhancing frameworks. View this paper
