Comparative Analysis of Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics in Patients with SARI Confirmed as Influenza or COVID-19 Admitted in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Bucharest, Romania
Abstract
:1. Introduction
2. Materials and Methods
2.1. Statistical Analysis
2.2. Ethics Approval
3. Results
3.1. Characteristics of Patients with Laboratory-Confirmed Influenza in the 2018–2019 Season
3.2. Characteristics of Patients with Laboratory-Confirmed COVID-19 in the 2020–2021 Season
3.3. Comparison of Cases of Laboratory-Confirmed Influenza and COVID-19 in the Two Pre-Pandemic and COVID-19 Pandemic Seasons
4. Discussion
- The data were collected from a single hospital and cannot be generalized to the country.
- We cannot exclude an involuntary selection bias driven by hospital admission of severe COVID-19 cases.
- The data for the 2018–2019 season are only relevant for the circulating subtypes in that respective season, preponderantly A/H1, and to a smaller extent A/H3, while no B influenza viruses circulated that season. Given the differences in terms of clinical presentation and clinical outcomes between different influenza types or subtypes, a further analysis of multiple influenza seasons is warranted, to account for potential biases.
