“Fabrication of a thick crystalline Al2O3 coating with insulation and high thermal conductivity via anodic oxidation and subsequent mic arc discharge”

Song Wei, Jiang Bai-ling, Du Yu-zhou, JI Dong-dong, Wan Jing-jing

The manuscript should be accepted for publication. It covers an important topic about the improvement of electric properties of LED materials. LEDs are produced in billions every year.

Some minor improvement in the English language are necessary.

From the scientific point of view, I request to repeat the basics of exothermic and endothermic reactions.

During an exothermic reaction, heat is set free. During an endothermic reaction, heat is consumed. If heat is set free (exothermic reaction), the sign before the heat quantity  “Q” or reaction enthalpy “DRH” needs to be negative.

Example:

C + 2O à CO2   ΔRH= -394 kJ/mol                            ΔRH: reaction enthalpy

Please consider this remarks in context with your equations (2), (3) and (4). Change your sentence in line 67 properly.

Also, please don´t use the symbol for “equal”: =

But use the arrow in the reactions equations: à

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors reported a 143 μm thick coating of crystalline Al2O3 by anodic oxidation and subsequent micro-arc discharge treatment in this study. I have several comments and suggestions to the authors, before acceptance of this paper:

[1] Reference for equation 1 missing

[2] Author's summarized many materials dielectric strength and thermal conductivity in Table 1 that are definitely taken somewhere from the literature, please cite them.

[3] Same comments for Table 2, proper citation missing.

[4] What are the key challenges authors face during the coating of the aforementioned materials? Please also add in the manuscript, it will help to a field expert to successfully reproduce this work.

Abstract

The first two sentences within he abstract are repetitive and and could be rewritten as one sentence with a cohesive thought. Line 17; the word “was” should be removed from the sentence “the coating was consisted of amorphous and crystalline”

Introduction

Reference required for all the data presented in tables 1 and 2. Similar if Figures 1 and 2 are taken from the literature they should be properly cited.

The objective and significance of the study are not clearly articulated in the introduction section of the article.

Methodology

Under section 2.2

It would be worthwhile to use tables to show the experimental matrix with the different factors studied and the levels of each factor and the number of experiments completed and how many repeats. Also please indicate what was the stirring speed used for the electrolyte?

Result

The result section of the article was well written but lacking discussion and comparison to what currently exists with this technology.

Conclusion

The conclusions are not consistent with the objective of the paper though those were not clearly defined. The authors stated that “The thermal conductivity of the coating was 23.7 W/m•K, which was around 8 times to the insulation materials sold on the market. The coating can be applied in the heat dissipation of aluminium alloy, meeting the requirement of the high power and small volume part in the electronic industry, especially in LED development”. If this was the objective of the study it should be clearly outlined in the introduction.

References

The references used in the study are current and sufficiently cover the key findings in the literature related to this subject matter.

The stirring speed used for the electrolyte was 60 r/min and have been added to the article. The repeat time of the experimental was 3 times and had been added to the article.

The reviewers comment:5) The result section of the article was well written but lacking discussion and comparison to what currently exists with this technology.

Answer: As suggested by the reviewers, we have added micro morphology and cross section image of anodic and MAO coatings in the result and discussion, the figure were updated.

The reviewers comment:6) The conclusions are not consistent with the objective of the paper.

Answer: We have re-written introduction and conclusion according to the reviewer’s suggestion.

Special thanks to you for your good comments.
