Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The study is concerned with the application of an inexpensive structural health monitoring (SHM) system for civil engineering structures. Using a wireless sensor network, the proposed system aims to identify dynamic properties, such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping, from structural response. The paper validates the reliability of the SHM system by small- and full-scale experiments.

The study covers an interesting topic. The paper is well written. Still, there are some points, which could possibly improve the paper and its impact. I explain my concerns in more detail below and ask authors to kindly address my comments in their response.

Comments:

  1. Table 1: The estimated cost of the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge should be $ 1 500 000. Furthermore, the table includes the Golden Gate Bridge SHM. However, this is not mentioned in the text. Please include a short introduction of this system as well.
  2. Furthermore, please compare the proposed system with existing wireless sensor systems. At least with the reported ones… What are the merits and limitations of the proposed system?
  3. Eq. 1: The text says this equation represents harmonic response. However, according to Eq. 1, harmonic vibration could occur only if p=0 in case of free vibration or p is a harmonic function. On the other hand, p could be also a stochastic load. In this case, the response will not be harmonic. Please improve the representation in Eq. 1. Also, for Eq. 5, please introduce the complex number J in text.

Reviewer 2 Report

This paper deals with interesting implementation of low cost platform for structural health monitoring system.

Some minor editing is necessary.

In line 180 authors say "The microprocessor Raspberry Pi 3B+ performs three primary functions...". Raspberry Pi is not microprocessor, but mini computer or could be said "microprocessor platform".

Linux Ubuntu is not "operative system", but "operating system".

Internet should be written with capital "I".

Authors repeat word "experience" instead of "experiment". The later one seems more convenient.

The sentence in lines 338-340 is repeated in lines 342-344.
