December 2024 - 15 articles
Cover Story: This article provides an in-depth review of identity theft through malicious use of Personal Identifiable Information (PII), and the significant consequences victims can experience. We examine how PII can be used for criminal purposes in perpetuity, why victimization is often not initially evidential, and why there is reluctance to report these crimes. The article concludes with six recommendations: the importance of reporting victimization; specialized training for law enforcement investigators of identity theft; updating legislation to more effectively combat identity theft crimes; improving support and remediation for victims; raising awareness of the courts to the need to prosecute identity theft-based crimes; and the importance of certifying class actions against organizations who do not adequately protect PII that has been entrusted to them.
