Varietal Response to Sour Bunch Rot in Polish Grapevine Genetic Resources
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
One of the positive effects of climate change is that in colder areas, such as Poland, growing grapes can and has become economically profitable again. In these areas, very little data is available to growers on the local behaviour of varieties. The article submitted for review therefore contains very important data.
The overall quality of the manuscript is good, although the English needs improvement.
In the following, I detail what I consider to be the errors and omissions that need to be corrected:
Lines 156-171: It is not necessary to cite the OIV descriptors in full, it is sufficient to refer to them.
Line 175 I suggest the use of the word 'sensitivity' instead of 'tendency'.
Line 195 use the term "table grape" instead of "dessert grape"
"Percentage of cluster area with sour rot" - How was this measured or estimated?
I suggest you investigate whether there is a correlation between powdery mildew or downy mildew resistance of individual varieties and the degree of sour rot (the literature you cite suggests that there is a correlation).

The authors wish to thank the Reviewer for your valuable comments that will improve the quality of the reviewed manuscript " Varietal Response to Sour Bunch Rot in Polish Grapevine Genetic Resources” (agronomy-1283951). We have completed the manuscript according to the Reviewers comments. The English has been improved by a professional linguist. The text has been corrected or supplemented to take into account the comments of the Reviewer.
A detailed list of the corrections made, recommended by the Reviewer:
- 156-171 (in oryginal version) – This part of the text was slightly shortened, so that, the description of the assessment method remained clear, without referring to the source text (OIV Descriptor List);
- 175, the word "sensivity" is used or the word „tendency” is omitted („easy detachment”);
- 195 the term „table grapes” was used;
Regarding „Percentage of cluster area with sour rot”. Explanation regarding the evaluation of this parameter was added: “To determine the level of infestation, the ratio of the number of external, infested berries to the total number of external berries in the cluster was calculated.”
Regarding “ a correlation between powdery mildew and downy mildew resistance and the degree of sour rot. An additional sentence is included in the discussion of the revised text:
“Under the conditions of the present study, effective chemical control of downy and powdery mildew made it impossible to establish a correlation between the degree of the mentioned fungal infections of the assessed cultivars and the degree of sour rot.”
Yours Sincerely

Reviewer 2 Report
The research is interesting, valuable and comprehensive. The topic is relevant especially in the light of climate change, maintenance and increasing biodiversity and recommendations for growers. There is a need for detailed research of such diseases, not only of powdery mildew and downy mildew but also of those that are not as dangerous or are 'new' or intensified in recent years. The paper is structured, easy to read. The results are very interesting and open new questions (especially at the genetic level which is less researched and complex even in the case of Botrytis). The material and methods are relevant and in accordance with the norms, the most important results are simply presented. The results are comprehensively explained in the discussion and linked to previous researches. This work is very useful and of high quality, as a base for further morphological and genetical research.
