Addressing/Mitigating Anthropogenic Impacts in Coastal Marine Environments: Interdisciplinary Approaches

Topic Information

Dear Colleagues,

Coastal environments are complex systems where multiple anthropogenic and climate stressors interact. Chemical pollutants, heavy metals, and plastics accumulate in marine organisms, damaging the food web. Underwater noise and maritime traffic disturb wildlife and increase the risk of collisions with large vertebrates. Fishing activities interact at multiple levels, modifying the trophic chain and flows of biomass across the ecosystem, while unsustainable mariculture activities alter marine habitats and communities almost all over the world. Furthermore, extreme weather events and chronic changes such as sea level rise and thermal stress further exacerbate the consequences of anthropogenic impacts.

Understanding how stressors interact helps predict risks and mitigate consequences for both ecosystems and the human populations that rely on them. In recent years, human impacts on the coastal environment have been investigated through numerous studies, often focused on specific sites or issues. Today, the main priority is to develop regional conservation measures based on collaboration among researchers, institutions, industries, and local communities. Effective management aimed at reducing anthropogenic pressures, promoting the sustainable use of marine resources, and protecting key habitats and species requires a multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary approach providing collaboration between experts like biologists, chemists, geologists, economists, and social scientists to address issues such as pollution, climate change, and sustainable resource use through a holistic view.

In this Topic, we aim to ideally continue the path undertaken in previous years with the Topic "Anthropogenic Impacts in Marine Coastal Waters: Assessment, Case Studies and Solutions". We kindly invite authors to submit manuscripts focused on any of the following topics: assessing how anthropogenic and climate stressors interact, determining their impact on marine organisms and their habitats, and proposing possible solutions and management measures. Submissions should be case studies (original papers) or reviews. Papers with multi-/interdisciplinary approaches are especially welcome.

Preprints.org is a multidisciplinary platform offering a preprint service designed to facilitate the early sharing of your research. It supports and empowers your research journey from the very beginning.

MDPI Topics is collaborating with Preprints.org and has established a direct connection between MDPI journals and the platform. Authors are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by posting their preprints at Preprints.org prior to publication:

  1. Share your research immediately: disseminate your ideas prior to publication and establish priority for your work.
  2. Safeguard your intellectual contribution: Protect your ideas with a time-stamped preprint that serves as proof of your research timeline.
  3. Boost visibility and impact: Increase the reach and influence of your research by making it accessible to a global audience.
  4. Gain early feedback: Receive valuable input and insights from peers before submitting to a journal.
  5. Ensure broad indexing: Web of Science (Preprint Citation Index), Google Scholar, Crossref, SHARE, PrePubMed, Scilit and Europe PMC.
