The Integration of New Technologies and Interdisciplinary Approaches in Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs)
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a small population of tumor cells with the ability to self-renew, differentiate, initiate tumors, and resist conventional therapies. They are considered major contributors to tumor recurrence, metastasis, and treatment failure. Recent advances in technology and interdisciplinary research have significantly improved the understanding, detection, and targeting of CSCs. Some of the new technologies include the following:
- Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) enables researchers to study individual cancer cells rather than bulk tumor tissue. This technology helps identify CSC heterogeneity, molecular signatures, and treatment-resistant subpopulations.
- AI and machine learning analyze large genomic, epigenomic and proteomic datasets to predict CSC behavior, treatment response, and patient prognosis.
- CRISPR technology allows precise editing of genes involved in CSC survival and stemness pathways such as Wnt, Notch, and Hedgehog.
- Circulating tumor cells (CTCs), exosomes, and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) provide minimally invasive methods for monitoring CSC activity and tumor progression.
The integration of advanced technologies and interdisciplinary approaches has transformed cancer stem cell research. Techniques such as single-cell sequencing, AI/ML, CRISPR, organoids, metabolic landscape, targeted immunotherapy and nanotechnology are providing deeper insights into CSC biology and opening new avenues for precision cancer therapy. Continued collaboration among molecular biologists, clinicians, engineers, data scientists, synthetic chemists, system biologists and immunologists is essential. This Topic will cover all aspects of modern technologies related to CSC isolation and identification.

Preprints.org is a multidisciplinary platform offering a preprint service designed to facilitate the early sharing of your research. It supports and empowers your research journey from the very beginning.
MDPI Topics is collaborating with Preprints.org and has established a direct connection between MDPI journals and the platform. Authors are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by posting their preprints at Preprints.org prior to publication:
- Share your research immediately: disseminate your ideas prior to publication and establish priority for your work.
- Safeguard your intellectual contribution: Protect your ideas with a time-stamped preprint that serves as proof of your research timeline.
- Boost visibility and impact: Increase the reach and influence of your research by making it accessible to a global audience.
- Gain early feedback: Receive valuable input and insights from peers before submitting to a journal.
- Ensure broad indexing: Web of Science (Preprint Citation Index), Google Scholar, Crossref, SHARE, PrePubMed, Scilit and Europe PMC.
