New Trends and Innovations in Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, and Specialty Crops, 2nd Edition
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
Following the successful completion of Volume I of “New Trends and Innovations in Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, and Specialty Crops” and the strong interest in this research topic, we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume II.
Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs), together with specialty crops, encompass a vast array of plant species that are the subject of research across numerous disciplines and experimental approaches. The innovative and sustainable evaluation and exploitation of these crops involve a broad spectrum of botanical, environmental, horticultural, agronomic, genetic, phytochemical, and applied aspects, necessitating a multifaceted and diversified approach. This Topic Collection aims to highlight the latest trends in research and development in MAPs and specialty crops, providing a comprehensive perspective that includes plant evaluation, conservation, cultivation, biological activity, phytochemical analysis, and marketing. Submitted articles should focus on process innovation and/or product innovation and clearly emphasize these aspects.
We welcome research articles and reviews on MAPs and specialty crops, including but not limited to the following topics:
- Ecological roles, characterization, and description of wild populations, including conservation and domestication concerns.
- Breeding, selection, propagation, and nursery studies, including plant growth and development, in vitro culture and micropropagation, genetic selection, genomics, and related topics.
- Cultivation and crop management issues under field and protected conditions; soil and soilless systems; conventional and organic approaches; and intensive and extensive farming systems. This includes all aspects of cropping techniques, such as sowing or transplanting, fertilization, irrigation, mulching, weed management, and harvesting methods.
- Adaptation mechanisms and responses to biotic and abiotic stresses.
- Phytochemical evaluation, including the assessment and analysis of essential oils and other plant extracts, as well as quantification and bioactivity studies.
- Traditional and novel uses of MAPs and specialty crops for food and non-food purposes at both household and industrial levels, including market perspectives and present and future scenario analyses related to application commercialization.
- Utilization of by-products, wastes, and residues, and the development and improvement of related production chains.

Preprints.org is a multidisciplinary platform offering a preprint service designed to facilitate the early sharing of your research. It supports and empowers your research journey from the very beginning.
MDPI Topics is collaborating with Preprints.org and has established a direct connection between MDPI journals and the platform. Authors are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by posting their preprints at Preprints.org prior to publication:
- Share your research immediately: disseminate your ideas prior to publication and establish priority for your work.
- Safeguard your intellectual contribution: Protect your ideas with a time-stamped preprint that serves as proof of your research timeline.
- Boost visibility and impact: Increase the reach and influence of your research by making it accessible to a global audience.
- Gain early feedback: Receive valuable input and insights from peers before submitting to a journal.
- Ensure broad indexing: Web of Science (Preprint Citation Index), Google Scholar, Crossref, SHARE, PrePubMed, Scilit and Europe PMC.
