Breathing reserve (BR) is the remaining proportion of achievable minute ventilation that remains unutilized at total exhaustion during exercise. Previous studies have found a smaller BR in endurance-trained athletes compared to untrained controls. However, most of these studies have examined men. Given that women have a greater ventilatory limitation than stature-matched men, the present cross-sectional study aimed to investigate how this sex difference influences BR and lung function tests in endurance-trained females compared to matched, untrained females. To obtain further insight, we also aimed to investigate whether VO2max serves as a predictor of BR. We examined 15 female elite runners and 15 healthy, matched female controls aged 24–33 years with regard to pulmonary function, MVV, VEmax, BR, and VO2max. The elite runner group had a median BR of 5%, while that of the controls was 21%, representing a significant difference. Lung function tests showed no differences between the two groups. A moderate association was found between VO2max and BR. The female elite runners demonstrated a lower BR than the group of matched, untrained controls, which was lower than that found for male elite athletes in previous studies. This may indicate a greater ventilatory demand in female relative to male endurance athletes. Full article

Objectives: The ability to efficiently regulate body temperature is crucial during endurance activities such as trail running, especially during competitive events in hot conditions. Over the past decade, passive hyperthermia exposure has grown significantly in popularity as a means of improving acclimatization and performance in hot environments. The present study aims to compare the physiological changes that occur in a group of professional athletes due to passive sauna exposure (80–90 °C) and their own response to maximal aerobic performance. Methods: Twelve professional trail runners (eight men and four women) were tested in three conditions: (i) baseline; (ii) before; and (iii) after (a) passive dry sauna exposure and (b) a maximal endurance test. In both cases, physiological parameters such as heart rate, tympanic temperature, arterial and muscle oxygen saturation, and blood concentrations of glucose, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and hemoglobin were measured. Results: Sauna exposure produced similar trends in cardiovascular and metabolic responses to those occurring during exercise, but at a much lower physiological level. Glucose and HDL levels were both significantly elevated (or tended to be so) after sauna and exercise (p < 0.03 and p < 0.01, respectively). Athletes who mobilized the sum of substrates (glucose and HDL) performed the exercise test faster (r = −0.76; p < 0.004). The response of arterial oxygen saturation (decreased) was similar during sauna and exercise, but opposite at the muscular level (increased during sauna and decreased during exercise). Additionally, inter-individual variability in responses was noted for most of the other parameters, suggesting the existence of ‘responders’ and ‘non-responders’ to thermal stimuli. Conclusions: The physiological responses of trained endurance athletes are moderately impacted by passive sauna use. However, individual changes could be correlated with endurance performance and optimizing individualization. Heat stimuli promote different physiological responses in terms of cardiac function, oxygen kinetics and substrate mobilization, albeit to a lesser extent than exercise. Greater substrate mobilization during maximal endurance exercise was found to be correlated with better performance. Further studies are needed to explore the concepts of metabolic flexibility, as described here, and how heat exposure may improve systemic health and performance. Full article

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of respiratory muscle training in runners in relation to gender and trainers (PowerBreathe and Threshold). Methods: This study comprised 32 athletes training in middle-distance running at a high sports level. The subjects were divided into groups depending on the applied breathing training (IMT): group IMT on the PowerBreath, group IMT on the Threshold, and the control group labeled sham-IMT. The following tests were performed on each athlete: spirometry, maximal inspiratory pressure, expiratory pressure, and physical performance. Results: A significant increase in the levels of the parameters VO2/kg, PEF, PImax, and PEmax, as well as a decrease in lactic acid levels and an increase in lactate threshold in both sexes, were observed as a result of the training on the PowerBreathe device. There were no significant differences in the levels of the parameters VO2/kg, PEF, PImax, lactic acid, and lactate threshold in either sex after Threshold training. A significant increase in PEmax was found in the Threshold device training group. Conclusions: Most of the assessed parameters of physical fitness and lung ventilation function, along with the respiratory muscle strength of women and men running middle distances, increased significantly after the use of IMT on PowerBreathe, and these results were maintained in the third stud, in contrast to the use of IMT on Threshold, with which there was no significant improvement. Background: Assessing sleep quality is essential in sports science, particularly in ultra-endurance sports, where recovery is critical for performance and health. Objective: This study aimed to identify sleep quality patterns among endurance and ultra-endurance athletes using hierarchical clustering analysis, with comparisons by sex and modality. Method: Data were collected during the La Misión Brasil competitions in 2023 and 2024, using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The questionnaire was emailed to all registered runners two weeks before the event. A total of 490 athletes participated, including 276 men (mean ± SD age: 43 ± 11 years) and 214 women (mean ± SD age: 43 ± 13 years). Statistical analyses included Cohen’s d and r effect sizes, and a 95% confidence interval for hypothesis testing. Residuals between-cluster proportions were assessed within a range of −3.3, ensuring a 99.7% confidence level for significant differences. Results: The results showed that endurance runners had better sleep quality, with most scoring low on the PSQI. In contrast, ultra-endurance athletes displayed greater variability, with a higher prevalence of poor sleep quality, particularly in women. Conclusions: The hierarchical clustering method effectively identified distinct sleep patterns, providing insights into the dynamics of recovery and performance. These findings highlight the impact of increased physical and psychological demands in ultra-endurance sports and emphasize the need for tailored sleep monitoring strategies to optimize the recovery and performance of athletes. Running-induced fatigue affects several biomechanical parameters, and yet few studies are focused on the acceleration spikes’ asymmetries. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 30 min run on lower limbs spikes’ asymmetries. Eighteen recreational runners (35.6 ± 7.5 years; seven women) performed a treadmill running protocol at a moderate speed and acceleration spikes’ asymmetries and kinematic (temporal) parameters were measured via accelerometers—on the tibias and sacrum—and photogrammetry. Acceleration spikes’ parameters were continuously measured and averaged per minute to assess the relationship between fatigue and acceleration spike asymmetries via a linear regression model. Right tibial acceleration spikes increased over time (r = 0.9; p < 0.001) and left tibia spikes decreased (r = 0.78; p < 0.001), with a rise in tibial load asymmetry from 9% to 25% at the end (r = 0.98; p < 0.001). This study suggest that fatigue affects the acceleration spikes of the two legs differently, with increasingly greater acceleration spikes in the right (dominant) leg. These findings should be considered, as greater asymmetries are related to overuse injuries and lower efficiency. Also, in studies focusing on running mechanics with fatigue, it is recommended that researchers collect data from both limbs, and not only from the right (dominant) leg. Full article

Since the introduction of prophylactic HPV vaccines, both HPV infection rates and cervical cancer rates have subsequently dropped. Yet, cervical cancer remains the fourth most common cancer diagnosis in women globally. As HPV and its role in the development of cervical cancer become better understood, vaccines have emerged as a front runner for improved therapeutic cervical cancer treatment. Recent studies have shown that protein and DNA vaccines may be effectively delivered via the use of several different vectors, while combination therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors provides even more effective treatment. Further investigation and additional clinical studies into specific vaccine strategies are necessary to determine how effective vaccines are as therapeutic treatment for cervical cancer. This review intends to summarize some of the most promising research on cervical cancer vaccines. Such a study may be helpful for gynecologists to prevent and manage patients with HPV infection. Background/Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of various muscle taping applications on running efficiency. Methods: Recreational runners (N = 14; 7 women; age = 22.80 ± 4.61 years; BMI = 25.08 ± 3.97 kg/m2) completed four bouts of treadmill running at a preferred speed. Each bout used a different taping technique, as follows: control (no tape), athletic tape, Kinesio tape, and a novel spring-type technique of Kinesio tape. Oxygen consumption, muscle activation of the rectus femoris and biceps femoris, and stride frequency were observed during each bout to assess running efficiency. The data for these variables were analyzed with repeated-measures ANOVAs (α = 0.05). Results: There were no differences among any of the four conditions for oxygen consumption (p = 0.232, η2 = 0.103), muscle activation of the rectus femoris (p = 0.173, η2 = 0.118) or biceps femoris (p = 0.085, η2 = 0.184), or stride frequency (p = 0.230, η2 = 0.107). Conclusions: None of the three taping methods tested in this study had a significant impact on oxygen consumption, agonist muscle activation, or stride frequency during short running bouts at a preferred speed compared to a control condition. There appeared to be no ergogenic benefit to the use of these taping techniques during this manner of activity. Runners opting to use a taping method to enhance joint stability at the knee during preferred-intensity running activity may do so without any substantial impact on their running efficiency. Despite strength training (ST) being well characterized by professional runners, little is known about the inclusion of ST models for recreational runners. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the presence of ST in the training practices of recreational runners, with a focus on understanding its characteristics and the motivations of recreational athletes for including ST in their routines. To this end, 801 recreational runners (493 male and 308 female) completed a structured questionnaire regarding their training habits, the inclusion of ST, and its characteristics, concerning the type of ST, training volume, and the reasons for including ST in their training programs. To assess the possible associations between categorical variables, data were analyzed using the chi-square test for independent samples. Approximately 625 runners (78.1%) reported that they included ST in their training routine, with a statistically significant difference between the sexes (men: 73.5% vs. women: 85.4%; X2 = 14.09; p = 0.01). Traditional strength training (TST) was the predominant type of ST included (78.5%), with most participants performing 2–4 sets and 8–12 repetitions per set at a frequency of 3–4 sessions per week. The importance of ST was primarily attributed to performance improvement (85%). The results suggest that recreational runners incorporate different types of ST into their training routines, with TST being the predominant type perceived by runners as a valuable asset for improving running performance. Background: Unlike road running, mountain and trail running typically cover longer distances and include uphill and downhill segments that impose unique physiological and mechanical demands on athletes. Objectives: This study aimed to identify morphological differences in the patellar and Achilles tendons between trail and road runners. Moreover, the potential influence of weekly mileage and accumulated positive elevation gain on the morphology of both tendons was obtained. Design: Cross-sectional comparative study. Methods: Thirty-three road runners (11 women, 22 men) and thirty-three trail runners (13 women, 20 men) were recruited and their weekly mileage and elevation gain collected. All participants had a weekly training volume exceeding 20 km. The thickness and cross-sectional area (CSA) of their patellar and Achilles tendons were evaluated using ultrasound. Results: Independent samples t-tests revealed significant differences between groups for the Achilles tendon (p < 0.003) but not for the patellar tendon (p > 0.330). Further, Spearman’s correlation coefficients indicated moderate positive correlations for the thickness and CSA of the Achilles tendon with weekly running volume (0.256 and 0.291, respectively) and with elevation gain (0.332 and 0.334, respectively), suggesting a tendency for the tendon to adapt to greater training loads, enhancing its structural integrity and resilience. Conclusions: Trail runners exhibit larger and thicker Achilles tendons, likely due to increased weekly mileage and elevation gain, highlighting the adaptive response to mechanical overload from uphill running. Previous studies on gender differences in running biomechanics have predominantly been limited to joint angles and have not investigated a potential influence of footwear condition. This study shall contribute to closing this gap. Lower body biomechanics of 37 recreational runners (19 f, 18 m) were analysed for eight footwear and two running speed conditions. Presenting the effect size Cliff’s Delta enabled the interpretation of gender differences across a variety of variables and conditions. Known gender differences such as a larger range of hip movement in female runners were confirmed. Further previously undiscovered gender differences in running biomechanics were identified. In women, the knee extensors are less involved in joint work. Instead, compared to men, the supinators contribute more to deceleration and the hip abductors to acceleration. In addition to differences in extent, women also show a temporal delay within certain variables. For the foot, ankle and shank, as well as for the distribution of joint work, gender differences were found to be dependent on footwear condition, while sagittal pelvis and non-sagittal hip and thigh kinematics are rather consistent. On average, smaller gender differences were found for an individual compared to a uniform running speed. Future studies on gender differences should consider the influence of footwear and running speed and should provide an accurate description of the footwear condition used. The findings of this study could be used for the development of gender-specific running shoes and sports and medical products and provide a foundation for the application of smart wearable devices in gender-specific training and rehabilitation. Carbon plate running shoes (CPRSs) have gained widespread popularity among elite and amateur runners, representing one of the most substantial changes in running gear over the past decade. Compared to elite runners, however, amateurs run at lower speeds and show more diverse running styles. This is a meaningful difference as many previous studies on CPRSs focus either on highly trained male runners and higher speeds or only on a single CPRSs manufacturer. The present study aims at bridging this gap by investigating how CPRSs from four different manufacturers affect running economy in amateurs of both sexes at their individual running speeds. For this purpose, 21 trained amateur triathletes (12 men; 9 women) completed an incremental treadmill test until volitional exhaustion, yielding running speeds at ventilatory thresholds 1 (vVT1) and 2 (vVT2). In a second session, subjects ran five trials of 3 × 3 min (speeds of 90% vVT1, ½ (vVT1 + vVT2), and 100% vVT2), wearing one out of four different pairs of CPRSs or their own preferred non-CPRS shoes in each trial. Our results show that tested CPRS models resulted in a significant reduction in the mean energy cost of transport, compared to the non-CPRS control condition, with Cohen’s d amounting to −1.52 (p = 0.016), 2.31 (p < 0.001), 2.57 (p < 0.001), and 2.80 (p < 0.001), respectively, although effect sizes varied substantially between subjects and running speeds. In conclusion, this study provides evidence that amateur athletes may benefit from various manufacturers’ CPRS models at their typical running speeds to a similar degree as highly trained runners. It is recommended that amateur athletes evaluate a range of CPRSs and select the shoe that elicits the least subjective sensation of fatigue over a testing distance of at least 400–1000 m. Agility appears to be an important skill in the downhill sections of trail running; however, its actual role in the performance of this sport is unknown. The aim of the study was to evaluate the correlation of reactive agility (RA) and certain biomechanical parameters with the performance of runners when performing trail running descents. Nine amateur trail runners (four women and five men) performed a session of change of direction, RA, and 15 m linear sprint tests. In a second session, they performed a trail running race of 400 m with a negative elevation gain of 40 m. The relationship between the variables obtained in both sessions was evaluated using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The results revealed significant correlations of performance during the trail running descent, with the time of the 15 m linear sprint (r = 0.77, ρ ≤ 0.05.), 5 m linear sprint (r = 0.79, ρ ≤ 0.05.), and with the reaction time in the reactive agility test with a sport-specific stimulus (r = 0.82, ρ ≤ 0.05.). The correlations found in the tests suggest that reactive agility skills and acceleration abilities have a significant relationship with performance on downhill sections in trail running. Background: The purpose of this randomized cross-over controlled trial was to evaluate the biomechanical effects of ankle taping using rigid tape (RT) or kinesiotape (KT) compared to no taping during treadmill running in well-trained amateur runners. Methods: A total of 22 participants (15 men and 7 women) completed three running sessions on a treadmill, each lasting 30 min, under different conditions: no taping (CG), RT, and KT. Sagittal and frontal plane kinematics were analyzed using the Kinovea software to assess the ankle dorsiflexion, knee flexion, hip extension, tibial angle, foot strike pattern, heel eversion, and pelvic drop across three intervals (0–10, 10–20, and 20–30 min). Results: The results demonstrated no significant differences in sagittal plane variables (ankle dorsiflexion, knee flexion, hip extension, and cadence) or frontal plane variables (heel eversion and pelvic drop) between the CG, RT and KT groups at any time point. Although heel eversion significantly increased over time due to fatigue, the taping conditions did not affect running kinematics. Conclusions: These findings suggest that neither RT nor KT alters running biomechanics in well-trained runners over prolonged treadmill running. The study highlights that taping, commonly used to prevent ankle injuries, does not significantly modify lower limb kinematics in the absence of injury. Further research is needed to evaluate the effects of taping in novice or injured runners and under more demanding conditions, such as overground running. Full article

This research aimed to investigate morphological parameters (body mass, height, BMI) of medallists at the World Masters Orienteering Championships (WMOC), alongside their sports achievements and results. Fifty medallists from the 2022 WMOC, aged 35 to 80, were surveyed using a questionnaire, with non-parametric statistics (Mann–Whitney U test and ρ-Spearman test) applied for analysis. The average height was 179 cm for men and 165 cm for women, with average weights of 70 kg for men and 54 kg for women. BMI was 21.5 (SD = 1.43) for men and 20.4 (SD = 1.74) for women, with significantly lower BMI values in women (Z = 2.054, p = 0.04). Men’s BMI decreased with age (R = −0.534, p < 0.01). The BMI value of masters foot orienteers is typical for middle-distance runners. Women are closer to the somatotype of 1500 m athletes and men to 800 m athletes. Lack of earlier elite success does not preclude being on the podium at the WMOC (only 3 of the 50 medallists surveyed had won a medal in elite competition in the past). Full article

Relationship Between Training Frequency and Training Session Duration on Vitality in Recreational Runners: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Running can improve health status from a biopsychosocial perspective. However, isolation strategies, like the COVID-19 pandemic-induced lockdown, produce deleterious effects on both health status and sport performance. The aim of our study was to investigate recreational runners’ sporting habits, subjective vitality (SV), and well-being after the COVID-19 pandemic-induced lockdown. Methods: After data filtration, 5542 recreational runners (74.5% men and 25.5% women, >18 years) were selected for further analyses. The participants answered preliminary questions regarding sporting habits and completed the validated Spanish version of the Subjective Vitality as a Dynamic Reflection of Well-Being questionnaire for assessing their SV after lockdown. Results: Subjective vitality scores did not differ between men and women, nor between age groups (p = 0.41 and p = 0.11, respectively). Subjective vitality was greater with weekly training frequency up to 5 days/week, where this enhancement plateaued, while average training session duration was positively related to SV, stabilizing at 91–120 min/session (p < 0.001 for both). Conclusions: There is a dose–response relationship between both weekly training frequency and training session duration, and mental health benefits in recreational runners. Further longitudinal studies are needed in order to determine the optimal dose–response relationship for simultaneously enhancing mental health outcomes and running performance in recreational runners, especially regarding weekly training frequency, training session duration, and exercise intensity.
