This article explores the role of the European Union (EU) as a normative gender actor promoting women’s participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) within the Eastern Partnership (EaP) region. In a context marked by global inequality and overlapping international efforts, this paper assesses the extent to which EU-driven Europeanisation influences national gender policies in non-EU states. Using a postfunctionalist lens, this research draws on a qualitative analysis of EU-funded programmes, strategic documents, and a detailed case study encompassing Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, and Azerbaijan. This study highlights both the opportunities created by EU initiatives such as Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, and regional programmes like EU4Digital and the challenges presented by political resistance, institutional inertia, and socio-cultural norms. The findings reveal that although EU interventions have fostered significant progress, structural barriers and limited national commitment hinder the long-term sustainability of gender equality in STEM. Moreover, the withdrawal of other global actors increases pressure on the EU to maintain leadership in this area. This paper concludes that without stronger national alignment and global cooperation, EU gender policies risk becoming symbolic rather than transformative. Full article

Gender harassment is the most common variant of sexual harassment and is often seen in male-dominated workplaces. Importantly, persistent gender harassment produces pronounced impairment in psychological and occupational domains. The current study aimed to examine the degree to which male dominated academic degree programs are associated with higher rates of sexual harassment compared to female dominated programs. Four academic fields were chosen for their gender disparity—business, engineering, health sciences, and education. Consistent with hypotheses, cisgender women students in the college of engineering were most likely to experience gender harassment by peers and faculty. Implications and future directions are discussed. Full article

The present study aimed to adapt and validate the Adult Hope Scale (AHS) for the Romanian population, addressing a gap in culturally appropriate instruments for measuring dispositional hope. Based on Snyder’s theoretical model, the AHS was translated, culturally adapted, and administered to 663 Romanian adults. Psychometric evaluation included internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.84 for the eight positively worded items), test–retest reliability (ICC = 0.39 for the full scale), exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and assessments of convergent and discriminant validity. The two-factor model of the scale (agency and pathways) was confirmed, with significant item loadings and a strong correlation between the two latent factors (r = 0.717). Convergent validity was supported by moderate correlations with the Brief Resilience Scale (r = 0.36–0.45), while discriminant validity was indicated by low correlations with the Trait Anxiety Inventory (r = 0.18–0.20). Demographic analyses revealed higher hope levels in women and engineers, with significant differences by gender (p = 0.00018), education (p = 0.031), and profession (p = 0.008). Despite moderate temporal stability and one weakly performing item, the Romanian AHS demonstrates strong psychometric properties, making it a valid and reliable tool for assessing hope in research and clinical settings. Introduction: Recent technological progress in optical imaging—such as adaptive optics, interferometry and tomography—has greatly improved the resolution of retinal imaging. The ability to capture sequential images over time is particularly valuable for continuous monitoring and assessment of retinal diseases. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and age-matched controls from the Diabetes and Ophthalmology Department of the Emergency Military Clinical Hospital “Dr. Constantin Papilian” Cluj-Napoca between October 2023 and October 2024. These patients were assessed for inclusion and exclusion criteria and then categorized into two groups: the diabetes group and control group. Each participant underwent a comprehensive ophthalmological examination and retinal evaluation using SS-OCT (Spectralis Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany). The parameters measured included the superficial and deep foveal avascular zones (FAZ) in only one eye for each patient, selected based on image quality. Additionally, each patient underwent quantitative analysis of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Results: A total of 33 patients (33 eyes) featured, 13 men and 20 women. The DM group showed statistically significant higher results for CRP value compared to healthy subjects (p < 0.001). Also, both superficial and deep FAZ areas were statistically significantly higher for diabetes patients compared to the healthy controls (p < 0.05). The correlation analysis revealed that there was no significant correlation between CRP and either superficial FAZ (p = 0.809) or deep FAZ (p = 0.659). However, a significant positive moderate correlation was found between superficial FAZ and deep FAZ (r = 0.577, p = 0.015). Conclusions: Our findings showed a significantly enlarged FAZ in diabetic patients compared to healthy individuals, highlighting its potential as an early indicator of microvascular alterations in diabetes. While CRP levels were notably elevated in the diabetic group, no significant association was found between CRP and FAZ measurements, suggesting that FAZ changes may occur independently of systemic inflammatory status. Toxoplasma gondii, a pathogen of significant concern in animal production, companion animal health, and public health, particularly affects immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women. Current diagnostic techniques employ both direct and indirect methods, with serological assays widely used for detecting T. gondii infections in humans and animals. In this study, the TIM-barrel structure of Br2 β-glucosidase was engineered to create 10 chimeric multi-epitope proteins for T. gondii serological detection. Indirect ELISA screening identified three promising candidate proteins, V4Z, SFF, and S7V-V4Z-SFF, with sensitivities ranging from 71–86% and specificities ranging from 68–76%. Among these, ELISA-V4Z achieved the highest concordance with the reference IFAT method (Kappa = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.32–0.84) and demonstrated a moderate positive predictive value (PPV, 67%) and strong negative predictive value (NPV, 90%). These results suggest that the V4Z chimeric protein demonstrated the strongest performance among the tested candidates for T. gondii detection, exhibiting the highest sensitivity and specificity along with moderate agreement with the reference IFAT. However, its overall diagnostic performance remains limited. These findings highlight the need for further refinement and validation to enhance its diagnostic potential and assess its applicability for broader serological testing. Full article

The increasing flexibility and rapid, profound changes in the labor market require employability skills from graduates, dem1anding greater attention from higher education institutions to training opportunities that foster the development of these skills among their students. Using a sample of 373 first-year engineering students, this study analyzed, through regression analysis, the impact of sociodemographic (gender, age), academic (work, program choice, average grade), and psychological (life satisfaction, perseverance of effort, consistency of interests) variables on students’ confidence in achieving their professional career project after completing their degree. The results indicate that women and younger students show lower levels of confidence in achieving their future vocational projects, as do students with lower academic performance and those with less consistency in their interests. These findings suggest the need for specialized support services for students, starting from the first year, in career development provided by higher education institutions. Full article

The acceptance of myths about intimate partner violence against women by university students can lead to inappropriate and biased professional interventions due to their gender blindness. The aim of this study is to analyze the acceptance of myths about IPVAW among college students, considering differences by gender and degree course. To do this, we conducted a survey with 1531 first-year college students (55.8% women; mean age 18.89 years) and found that a third of the students did not reject the IPVAW myths and a third of them normalized violence. We also found a higher level of acceptance of violence minimization myths in men than in women, especially in Social Sciences and Engineering. The study reveals the need to educate future professionals about IPVAW myths, with an emphasis on minimization and normalization of violence. It also provides useful information for designing awareness programs. Full article

Numerous studies, diagnoses, and projects have been carried out in recent years to analyze the low female presence in STEM studies. However, progress has been limited, and the female presence is still low in certain degrees related to information and communication technologies, physics, and engineering. Many of the actions have been aimed at attracting women to these fields, but few have tried to change the culture of these disciplines, which make them a non-place for women. This paper analyses the measures carried out in Spanish public universities, and specifically at the University of Santiago de Compostela, to contribute to making these disciplines a place for women. Computer engineering workshops for primary and secondary education are proposed, incorporating a gender perspective. These transformative activities were highly valuated and welcomed by non-university teachers. The ideas inspiring these initiatives might help both to attract girls to STEM degrees and to generate gender equality environments, in order to change the androcentric culture of this field. Participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields is crucial, as these fields present an opportunity for individuals to overcome socio-economic adversities such as unemployment and poverty. In South Africa, access to STEM education has improved in recent years, partly due to the availability of study grants for learners interested in these fields. However, evidence shows that women remain underrepresented in STEM fields. Gender stereotypes, bullying, and pay disparities are cited as some of the contributing factors. Despite these overwhelming challenges, female learners are increasingly pursuing STEM education. Guided by the resilience theory, we explored the factors motivating female learners to enroll in STEM fields at a public secondary school level in South Africa. The research adopted the snowball sampling technique to recruit learners attending a public secondary school in South Africa. Due to COVID-19-related restrictions in 2022, the research data was collected through telephonic one-on-one interviews. The findings revealed that access to competitive employment opportunities, impactful careers, personal growth, and financial independence were some factors sparking the female learners’ interest in STEM. However, the learners experienced gender stereotypes and discrimination, which made them doubt their abilities to thrive in STEM education/fields. To cope with the complexities of STEM, the learners relied on their caregivers for emotional support, and they attended extra lessons and tutorials offered by the education system. The findings highlight the need for the government to prioritize support programs for female learners who must continuously fight rejection in STEM fields. Full article

Advancements in material science have made biopolymers a reliable solution in treating diseases for which there were no effective treatments. Intrauterine adhesions (IUAs) are the second leading cause of secondary infertility among women of reproductive age. Despite their negative impacts, the available data reveal that there is currently no effective treatment. This work serves to provide an overview of the progress in the biomedical application of biopolymers focusing on the clinical management of IUAs. Hysteroscopic adhesiolysis remains the standard treatment for IUAs, even though it is linked to recurrence and suboptimal reproductive outcomes. Efforts to improve IUAs treatment by combining hysteroscopy with adjuvants like physical barriers have not resulted in better outcomes. Biopolymers like hyaluronic acid (HA) represent a groundbreaking shift in regenerative medicine and have been used as anti-adhesives in the treatment of IUAs. This is attributed to their excellent biocompatibility, cell adhesiveness, biodegradability, low toxicity, and cell growth promotion ability. This study examines naturally occurring biopolymers, underscoring their biomedical applications, and limitations such as poor mechanical properties, rapid degradation, limited residence time, and bioavailability. Drawing from existing evidence and authors’ standpoints, innovative approaches harnessing the power of biopolymer engineering are suggested as future directions to overcome ongoing limitations. The “11th International Congress on Biocatalysis (biocat2024)” was part of a biennial series that unites the fields of biology and chemistry, attracting researchers from the life sciences, engineering, and computer science. This international forum provides an opportunity for scientists worldwide to connect, seek collaboration for future projects, and gain insights into contemporary topics and innovative techniques. Biocat covers a range of compelling subjects and recent advancements in biocatalysis, including enzyme discovery, evolution, and applications. This congress focused on six key topics: AI and computational methods, structure–function analysis and enzyme engineering, enzymatic and whole-cell biotransformations, reaction cascades (electro-, chemo-, and photoenzymatic synergies), bioprocess engineering and the design of smart reactors, and facing climate change through sustainability and a circular bioeconomy. In 2024, we welcomed 344 expert delegates alongside 21 internal attendees, including 154 women and 1 non-binary participant, bringing the total number of participants to an impressive 365. Established researchers and emerging scientists from academia and industry delivered a total of 119 presentations, comprising 59 standard lectures, 60 lightning talks, and 195 posters. Six industry exhibitors showcased their latest products and services, providing an excellent opportunity to strengthen the connection between science and industry. Furthermore, the biocat award, recognized as one of the most prestigious honors in biotechnology, was presented for the eleventh time in the categories of “Science in Academia”, “Lifetime Achievement,” and “Industry”. Breast cancer (BC) is among the most common neoplasms globally and is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in women. Despite significant advancements in prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment strategies made over the past two decades, breast cancer continues to pose a significant global health challenge. One of the major obstacles in the clinical management of breast cancer patients is the high intertumoral and intratumoral heterogeneity that influences disease progression and therapeutic outcomes. The inability of preclinical experimental models to replicate this diversity has hindered the comprehensive understanding of BC pathogenesis and the development of new therapeutic strategies. An ideal experimental model must recapitulate every aspect of human BC to maintain the highest predictive validity. Therefore, a thorough understanding of each model’s inherent characteristics and limitations is essential to bridging the gap between basic research and translational medicine. In this context, omics technologies serve as powerful tools for establishing comparisons between experimental models and human tumors, which may help address BC heterogeneity and vulnerabilities. This review examines the BC models currently used in preclinical research, including cell lines, patient-derived organoids (PDOs), organ-on-chip technologies, carcinogen-induced mouse models, genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs), and xenograft mouse models. We emphasize the advantages and disadvantages of each model and outline the most important applications of omics techniques to aid researchers in selecting the most relevant model to address their specific research questions. The digital economy is emerging as a transformative force for advancing inclusive sustainable development in rural China, particularly in addressing gender disparities in non-agricultural employment. Using the Digital Inclusive Finance Index and China Family Panel Studies data, this paper analyzes the digital economy’s impact on the gender gap in rural non-agricultural employment. It finds that the digital economy boosts women’s employment and wage, narrowing the gap. This effect is more obvious among groups with medium-high human capital, younger people, married people, and those with kids. The digital economy narrows the gap through the following three mechanisms: reshaping skill demands, reducing info-search cost, and promoting domestic labor socialization. It is an engine for growth and a force for gender equality in rural employment. Full article

Despite substantial instructional attention to large-enrollment university courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), they tend to have high rates of D, F, and Withdraw (DFW) at the introductory level that disproportionally disadvantage historically minoritized and underrepresented students, such as students identified as women, low-income, first-generation, or of color. While postsecondary institutions have recently explored big data and learning analytics to drive their institutional student success efforts, well-known shortfalls in student success in large STEM courses remain. This chapter documents an evidence-based approach at a large, R1 midwestern university that enriches robust data infrastructure with qualitative ethnographic methods. Applied to a gateway computer science course, these methods center students’ day-to-day learning realities, including disparate educational opportunities, in ways that interrogate barriers to and shortfalls in student success. The resulting case study describes our ethnographic approach, the shortfalls it uncovers, our future directions with this work, and how other faculty members and institutions can apply lessons learned to promote efficacy, attainment, and equity in gateway STEM courses. Implementations drawn from course vignettes point to revisions in design and preparation of group learning activities, strategic integration of lecture and lab sessions, course navigation aids, and pedagogical training for teaching assistants. Background and Objectives: Gender affirmation surgery significantly improves the quality of life and psychological well-being of transgender women. Among various techniques, sigmoid vaginoplasty is widely performed due to its ability to provide adequate vaginal depth and intrinsic lubrication. However, it carries risks, with neovaginal perforation being a serious yet underreported complication. Materials and Methods: This review examines the etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management of neovaginal perforation. A literature review was conducted to analyze reported cases and treatment strategies. Additionally, we present a case from our institution to highlight diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Results: Neovaginal perforation arises from mechanical trauma, ischemia, infection, or structural weaknesses in the sigmoid segment. Common risk factors include improper dilation, introital stenosis, and vascular compromise. Symptoms range from mild pelvic discomfort to peritonitis and sepsis. Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for diagnosis. Conservative management is effective in mild cases, whereas severe cases require surgical repair. Conclusions: Neovaginal perforation is rare but potentially life-threatening. Future research should refine surgical techniques, dilation protocols, and tissue engineering solutions. Standardized guidelines and patient education are essential for prevention and improved outcomes. Full article
