The growing demand for reliable and secure vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication in next-generation intelligent transportation systems has accelerated the adoption of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) as a means of enhancing link quality, spectral efficiency, and physical layer security. In this paper, we investigate the problem of secrecy rate maximization in a cooperative dual-RIS-aided V2V communication network, where two cascaded RISs are deployed to collaboratively assist with secure data transmission between mobile vehicular nodes in the presence of eavesdroppers. To address the inherent complexity of time-varying wireless channels, we propose a novel evolutionary transformer-gated recurrent unit (Evo-Transformer-GRU) framework that jointly learns temporal channel patterns and optimizes the RIS reflection coefficients, beam-forming vectors, and cooperative communication strategies. Our model integrates the sequence modeling strength of GRUs with the global attention mechanism of transformer encoders, enabling the efficient representation of time-series channel behavior and long-range dependencies. To further enhance convergence and secrecy performance, we incorporate an improved gray wolf optimizer (IGWO) to adaptively regulate the model’s hyper-parameters and fine-tune the RIS phase shifts, resulting in a more stable and optimized learning process. Extensive simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework compared to existing baselines, such as transformer, bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT), deep reinforcement learning (DRL), long short-term memory (LSTM), and GRU models. Specifically, our method achieves an up to 32.6% improvement in average secrecy rate and a 28.4% lower convergence time under varying channel conditions and eavesdropper locations. In addition to secrecy rate improvements, the proposed model achieved a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.05, coefficient of determination (R2) score of 0.96, and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of just 0.73%, outperforming all baseline methods in prediction accuracy and robustness. Furthermore, Evo-Transformer-GRU demonstrated rapid convergence within 100 epochs, the lowest variance across multiple runs. Full article

Traffic measurement systems are an essential part of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). These are specialized transport infrastructures where traffic data is collected and analyzed in order to optimize the use of road systems, improve transport safety, and implement future transport plans. The rapid development of transportation systems, urbanization, and industrialization have led to a global problem of air pollution. This has raised the topical issue of measuring and monitoring environmental parameters at traffic monitoring stations in ITS. In this paper, we present a wireless environmental monitoring system, which is a subsystem of a traffic monitoring station. Along with measuring traffic parameters, the station also collects useful meteorological information. A novel hybrid, dual-band IoT system based on LoRa and LoRaWAN for environmental parameters monitoring is presented. The hardware realization of a developed hybrid LoRaWAN end device, together with the sensors used for the measurement of air parameters, is described. Initial results from real test monitoring of environmental parameters on the road in urban environments are presented as a proof of concept. The presented wireless environmental monitoring system can also be used for indoor or outdoor air pollution monitoring, serving as a useful complement to intelligent transport systems. Full article

Reliable wireless communication is essential for mobile robotic systems operating in dynamic environments, particularly in the context of smart mobility and cloud-integrated urban infrastructures. This article presents an experimental study analyzing the impact of robot motion dynamics on wireless network performance, contributing to the broader discussion on data reliability and communication efficiency in intelligent transportation systems. Measurements were conducted using a quadruped robot equipped with an onboard edge computing device, navigating predefined trajectories in a laboratory setting designed to emulate real-world variability. Key wireless parameters, including signal strength (RSSI), latency, and packet loss, were continuously monitored alongside robot kinematic data such as speed, orientation (roll, pitch, yaw), and movement patterns. The results show a significant correlation between dynamic motion—especially high forward velocities and rotational maneuvers—and degradations in network performance. Increased robot speeds and frequent orientation changes were associated with elevated latency and greater packet loss, while static or low-motion periods exhibited more stable communication. These findings highlight critical challenges for real-time data transmission in mobile IoRT (Internet of Robotic Things) systems, and emphasize the role of network-aware robotic behavior, interoperable communication protocols, and edge-to-cloud data integration in ensuring robust wireless performance within smart city environments. Hybrid beamforming plays a critical role in evaluating wireless communication technology, particularly for millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) communication. Several hybrid beamforming systems are investigated for millimeter-wave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication. The deployment of huge grant-free transmission in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band is required due to the growing demands for spectrum resources in upcoming enormous machine-type communication applications. Ultra-high data speed, reduced latency, and improved connection are all promised by the development of 5G mmWave networks. Yet, due to severe route loss and directional communication requirements, there are substantial obstacles to transmission reliability and energy efficiency. To address this limitation in this research we present an intelligent transmission control scheme tailored to 5G mmWave networks. Transport control protocol (TCP) performance over mmWave links can be enhanced for network protocols by utilizing the mmWave scalable (mmS)-TCP. To ensure that users have the stronger average power, we suggest a novel method called row compression two-stage learning-based accurate multi-path processing network with received signal strength indicator-based association strategy (RCTS-AMP-RSSI-AS) for an estimate of both the direct and indirect channels. To change user scenarios and maintain effective communication constantly, we utilize the innovative method known as multi-user scenario-based MATD3 (Mu-MATD3). To improve performance, we introduce the novel method of “digital and analog beam training with long-short term memory (DAH-BT-LSTM)”. Finally, as optimizing network performance requires bottleneck-aware congestion reduction, the low-latency congestion control schemes (LLCCS) are proposed. The overall proposed method improves the performance of 5G mmWave networks. Full article

As an important part of national transportation infrastructure, the operation status of bridges is directly related to transportation safety and social stability. Structural deflection, which reflects the deformation behavior of bridge systems, serves as a key indicator for identifying stiffness degradation and the progression of localized damage. The accurate modeling and forecasting of deflection are thus essential for effective bridge health monitoring and intelligent maintenance. To address the limitations of traditional methods in handling multi-source data fusion and nonlinear temporal dependencies, this study proposes an enhanced iTransformer-based prediction model, termed LDAiT (LSTM Differential Attention iTransformer), which integrates Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and a differential attention mechanism for high-fidelity deflection prediction under complex working conditions. Firstly, a multi-source heterogeneous time series dataset is constructed based on wireless sensor network (WSN) technology, enabling the real-time acquisition and fusion of key structural response parameters such as deflection, strain, and temperature across critical bridge sections. Secondly, LDAiT enhances the modeling capability of long-term dependence through the introduction of LSTM and combines with the differential attention mechanism to improve the precision of response to the local dynamic changes in disturbance. Finally, experimental validation is carried out based on the measured data of Xintian Yellow River Bridge, and the results show that LDAiT outperforms the existing mainstream models in the indexes of R2, RMSE, MAE, and MAPE and has good accuracy, stability and generalization ability. The proposed approach offers a novel and effective framework for deflection forecasting in complex bridge systems and holds significant potential for practical deployment in structural health monitoring and intelligent decision-making applications. As urban populations expand and congestion intensifies, traditional ground transportation struggles to satisfy escalating mobility demands. Unmanned Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, as a key enabler of Urban Air Mobility (UAM), leverage low-altitude airspace to alleviate ground traffic while offering environmentally sustainable solutions. However, supporting high bandwidth, real-time video applications, such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and 360° streaming, remains a major challenge, particularly within bandwidth-constrained metropolitan regions. This study proposes a novel Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-enabled video streaming architecture that integrates 6G wireless technologies with intelligent routing strategies across cooperative airborne nodes, including unmanned eVTOLs and High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS). By relaying video data from low-congestion ground base stations to high-demand urban zones via autonomous aerial relays, the proposed system enhances spectrum utilization and improves streaming stability. The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the increasing reliance on renewable energy sources necessitate innovative charging infrastructure solutions to address key challenges in energy efficiency, grid stability, and sustainable transportation. Dynamic wireless charging systems, which enable EVs to charge while in motion, offer a transformative approach to mitigating range anxiety and optimizing energy utilization. However, these systems face significant operational challenges, including dynamic traffic conditions, uncertain EV arrival patterns, energy transfer efficiency variations, and renewable energy intermittency. This paper proposes a novel quantum computing-assisted optimization framework for the modeling, operation, and control of wireless dynamic charging infrastructure in urban highway networks. Specifically, we leverage Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) to address the high-dimensional, multi-objective optimization problem associated with real-time energy dispatch, charging pad utilization, and traffic flow coordination. The mathematical modeling framework captures critical aspects of the system, including power balance constraints, state-of-charge (SOC) dynamics, stochastic vehicle arrivals, and charging efficiency degradation due to vehicle misalignment and speed variations. The proposed methodology integrates quantum-inspired optimization techniques with classical distributionally robust optimization (DRO) principles, ensuring adaptability to system uncertainties while maintaining computational efficiency. A comprehensive case study is conducted on a 50 km urban highway network equipped with 20 charging pad segments, supporting an average traffic flow of 10,000 EVs per day. The results demonstrate that the proposed quantum-assisted approach significantly enhances energy efficiency, reducing energy losses by up to 18% compared to classical optimization methods. Moreover, traffic-aware adaptive charging strategies improve SOC recovery by 25% during peak congestion periods while ensuring equitable energy allocation among different vehicle types. The framework also facilitates a 30% increase in renewable energy utilization, aligning energy dispatch with periods of high solar and wind generation. Key insights from the case study highlight the critical impact of vehicle alignment, speed variations, and congestion on wireless charging performance, emphasizing the need for intelligent scheduling and real-time optimization. The findings contribute to advancing the integration of quantum computing into sustainable transportation planning, offering a scalable and robust solution for next-generation EV charging infrastructure. The advancement of intelligent road transport represents a promising direction in the evolution of transportation systems, aimed at improving road safety and reducing traffic accidents. The integration of artificial intelligence, sensors, and machine vision systems enables autonomous vehicles (AVs) to rapidly adapt to changes in the road environment, minimizing human error and significantly reducing collision risks. These technologies provide continuous and highly precise control, including adaptive acceleration, braking, and maneuvering, thereby enhancing overall road safety. Connected vehicles utilizing C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) communication primarily feature real-time operation, safety, and stability. However, communication flaws, such as signal fading, time delays, packet loss, and malicious network attacks, can affect vehicle-to-vehicle interactions in cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITSs). This study explores how C-V2X technology, compared to traditional DSRC, improves communication latency and enhances vehicle communication efficiency. Using SUMO simulations, various traffic scenarios were modeled with different autonomous vehicle penetration rates and communication technologies, focusing on traffic conflict rates, travel time, and communication performance. The results demonstrated that C-V2X reduced latency by over 99% compared to DSRC, facilitating faster communication between vehicles and contributing to a 38% reduction in traffic conflicts at 60% AV penetration. Traffic flow and safety improved with increased AV penetration, particularly in congested conditions. While C-V2X offers substantial benefits, challenges such as data packet loss, communication delays, and security vulnerabilities must be addressed to fully realize its potential. Future advancements in 5G and subsequent wireless communication technologies are expected to further reduce latency and enhance the effectiveness of C-ITSs. This study underscores the potential of C-V2X to enhance collision avoidance, alleviate congestion, and improve traffic management, while also contributing to the development of more reliable and efficient transportation systems. The continued refinement of simulation models and collaboration among stakeholders will be crucial to addressing the challenges in CAV integration and realizing the full benefits of connected transportation systems in smart cities. Terrestrial and satellite communications, tactical data links, positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT), as well as distributed sensing will continue to require precise timing and the ability to synchronize and disseminate time effectively. However, the supply of space-qualified clocks that meet Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)-level performance standards is limited. As the awareness of potential disruptions to GNSS due to adversarial actions grows, the current reliance on GNSS-level timing appears costly and outdated. This is especially relevant given the benefits of developing robust and stable time scale references in orbit, especially as various alternatives to GNSS are being explored. The onboard realization of clock ensembles is particularly promising for applications such as those providing the on-demand dissemination of a reference time scale for navigation services via a proliferated Low-Earth Orbit (pLEO) constellation. This article investigates potential inter-satellite network architectures for coordinating time and frequency across pLEO platforms. These architectures dynamically allocate radio resources for clock data transport based on the requirements for pLEO time scale formations. Additionally, this work proposes a model-based control system for wireless networked timekeeping systems. It envisions the optimal placement of critical information concerning the implicit ensemble mean (IEM) estimation across a multi-platform clock ensemble, which can offer better stability than relying on any single ensemble member. This approach aims to reduce data traffic flexibly. By making the IEM estimation sensor more intelligent and running it on the anchor platform while also optimizing the steering of remote frequency standards on participating platforms, the networked control system can better predict the future behavior of local reference clocks paired with low-noise oscillators. This system would then send precise IEM estimation information at critical moments to ensure a common pLEO time scale is realized across all participating platforms. Clock steering is essential for establishing these time scales, and the effectiveness of the realization depends on the selected control intervals and steering techniques. To enhance performance reliability beyond what the existing Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control technique can provide, the minimal-cost-variance (MCV) control theory is proposed for clock steering operations. The steering process enabled by the MCV control technique significantly impacts the overall performance reliability of the time scale, which is generated by the onboard ensemble of compact, lightweight, and low-power clocks. This is achieved by minimizing the variance of the chi-squared random performance of LQG control while maintaining a constraint on its mean. Full article

The emergence of 6G-enabled Internet of Vehicles (IoV) promises to revolutionize mobility and connectivity, integrating vehicles into a mobile Internet of Things (IoT)-oriented wireless sensor network (WSN). Meanwhile, 5G technologies and mobile edge computing further support this vision by facilitating real-time connectivity and empowering massive access to the Internet. Within this context, IoT-oriented WSNs play a crucial role in intelligent transportation systems, offering affordable alternatives for traffic monitoring and management. Efficient sensor selection thus represents a critical concern while deploying WSNs on urban networks. In this paper, we provide an overview of such a notably hard problem. The contribution is twofold: (i) surveying state-of-the-art model-based techniques for efficient sensor selection in traffic flow monitoring, emphasizing challenges of sensor placement, and (ii) advocating for the development of data-driven methodologies to enhance sensor deployment efficacy and traffic modeling accuracy. Further considerations underscore the importance of data-driven approaches for adaptive transportation systems aligned with the IoV paradigm. Full article

The proposed system leverages IEC for local data processing to reduce latency and optimize energy management, 6G networks for real-time vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, and DWC to enable efficient, on-the-go energy replenishment. Additionally, a dynamic arrival management algorithm is introduced to minimize UAV wait times to enhance operational efficiency. Simulations of this system demonstrated significant improvements: larger UAVs achieved an average charging efficiency of 91.2%, while smaller UAVs achieved 92.75%, with dynamic arrival management reducing wait times by an average of 1.5 min for smaller UAVs and 5.0 min for larger UAVs. These findings underscore the system’s effectiveness in optimizing UAV operations and charging efficiency. This integrated approach offers a scalable framework to enhance UAV capabilities and sets a benchmark for future advancements in operational efficiency and charging technology for urban and environmental applications.
