Zoning is vital for balancing biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in protected areas, yet traditional approaches often lead to ecological overprotection and social conflict. This study introduces an integrative modeling framework to optimize zoning strategies in the Longbao Reserve on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. We employed MaxEnt and Random Forest algorithms to evaluate habitat suitability for two flagship species: the bar-headed goose (Anser indicus) and the black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis). Results showed that 7.9% of the reserve comprised highly suitable habitats, mainly in the southeast, characterized by wetlands, water proximity, and low human disturbance. Land use and June NDVI emerged as key predictors, contributing over 30% and 35% to model performance, respectively. Based on habitat suitability and current zoning mismatches, we propose a revised four-tier zoning scheme: Core Habitat Conservation (16.9%), Ecological Rehabilitation (7.2%), Ecological Management (53.5%), and Sustainable Utilization Zones (22.4%). This refined framework aligns conservation priorities with local development needs and offers a scalable approach to adaptive protected area management. Full article

Urban landscapes have given rise to novel ecosystems (e.g., green areas), which differ in design and ecological quality depending on local planning strategies. Europe has the goal to increase conservation through increasing greenspace; however, urban wildlife health impacts, particularly on birds, are poorly studied. This study investigates associations between haemosporidians and intestinal coccidia in the Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus), as well as their body condition and immunological status, from five urban green areas in Madrid, Spain, from 2019 to 2022. These green areas differ in green infrastructure, and because these birds are adapted to urban environments, they are a good model to evaluate how green area infrastructure may affect the birds’ health. We detected a 29% prevalence of haemosporidians (Haemoproteus being the most common, followed by Leucocytozoon and Plasmodium) and a 4% prevalence of intestinal coccidia. We found that haemosporidian prevalence was significantly higher in green areas with untreated stagnant water surrounded by muddy areas, ideal conditions for vector reproduction. Therefore, effective management strategies, especially related to water treatment, are essential for protecting urban wildlife and human health. This study provides valuable information for researchers and urban wildlife managers to incorporate appropriate management strategies into urban green area planning to preserve urban biodiversity and protect public health. The Sultanate of Oman boasts remarkable biodiversity, exemplified by such species as the Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr) and the Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx), national symbols that highlight the extensive conservation efforts required to protect the country’s natural heritage. During decades, Omani authorities have taken significant measures to safeguard wildlife and preserve the natural environment. A sanctuary dedicated to the reintroduction of the Arabian Oryx, after extinction in nature in 1972, was established in 1980 in the Al Wusta Governorate under the patronage of the Royal Diwan and currently administrated by the recently established Environment Authority. During the almost 40 years since the reintroduction and the creation of the sanctuary, the oryx population has grown slowly but constantly. In 2021, the sanctuary hosted 738 oryx, allowing the start of the reintroduction of the species into the natural environment. Small groups of animals were released into the wild in selected areas. No animal health adverse events were recorded, and mortality was generally due to injuries received as a consequence of fighting, in particular during mating season. Standard veterinary care, including control of internal and external parasites, was regularly provided. In some occasions, immunization against certain diseases, such as clostridial infections, pasteurellosis, or mycoplasmosis, was also applied. In 2023, an FMD outbreak in cattle reported in Dhofar, about 500 km from the Al Wusta sanctuary, motivated specific prophylactic actions to prevent the risk of diffusion to oryx. From December 2023 to January 2024, an immunization program was undertaken using an FMD vaccine against serotypes A, O, and SAT 1, mostly in male oryx, while pregnant oryx were avoided for abortion risk due to handling. The following year, in January 2025, a severe outbreak occurred in oryx herds held in the sanctuary. The rapid onset and the spread of clinical symptoms among animals (100% morbidity in the second day after the first appearance of signs in some individuals) were suggestive of a highly contagious disease. The animals suffered from severe depression and inappetence, rapidly followed by abundant salivation, erosions of the oral mucosa and tongue, and diarrhea, with a short course characterized by prostration and death of the animal in the most severe cases. Therapeutical attempts (administration of antibiotics and rehydration) were mostly ineffective. Laboratory investigations (ELISA and PCR) ruled out contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Johne’s disease and Peste des petits ruminants (PPR). Both serology and antigen detection showed positiveness to foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Out of a total population of 669 present in the sanctuary at the beginning of the outbreak, 226 (33.78%) oryx died. Despite the vaccinal status, the 38.49% of dead animals resulted being vaccinated against FMD. Taking into account the incalculable value of the species, the outbreak represented a very dangerous event that risked wiping out the decades of conservation efforts. Therefore, all the available means, such as accrued biosecurity and adequate prophylaxis, should be implemented to prevent the recurrence of such health risks. The delicate equilibrium of wild fauna in Oman requires study and support for an effective protection, in line with the national plan “Vision 2040”, targeting the inclusion of the Sultanate within the 20 best virtuous countries for wildlife protection. Does Governance Influence Community Support in Conservation and Ecological Sustainability of Wildlife Conservancies? Lessons from Northern Kenya

The Community-Based Conservation (CBC) approach views local people as interested parties who should actively participate in and control conservation efforts, which contrasts with the conventional 'fortress conservation' common in government-protected areas isolated from human disturbance. The transition from fortress conservation to CBC, however, has not been a smooth journey for many African countries, especially in the sub-Saharan Africa region. This is because, in some cases, local communities do not see themselves as part of the governance structure of these conservancies, which affects the long-term ecological sustainability of the conservancies. Using eight (8) conservancies in the arid and semi-arid counties of Isiolo and Samburu, Kenya, this study used exploratory research to gather data from 24 Focus Group Discussions (FDGs) and forty-eight (48) key informant interviews (KIIs) to assess the influence of communities’ involvement on ecological outcomes of the conservancies. Other secondary sources also supported the primary data sources. Our findings showed that the governance model does influence community support for conservancies, and the benefits that communities receive or expect from the conservancies also have a strong influence on their support for conservation. However, it was established that community conservancies have brought positive changes to the wildlife population trends and habitat health. The study recommends the development of the National Rangelands Resources Management Policy and institutional arrangements to strengthen and safeguard the future of wildlife conservation within those conservancies and to provide clarity on the roles of different stakeholders. The study also recommends further studies on the actual impact of governance on community perception, the value of existing investments in community benefits, and the long-term implications of climate change impacts on conservancy ecosystems. Habitat fragmentation restricts the movement of large mammals across broad landscapes, leading to isolation of individuals or groups, reduced interaction with other species, and limited access to vital resources in surrounding habitats. In this study, we aimed to determine the wildlife ecological corridors for five large mammals (Ursus arctos, Cervus elaphus, Capreolus capreolus, Sus scrofa, and Canis lupus) between Kastamonu Ilgaz Mountain Wildlife Refuge and Gavurdağı Wildlife Refuge. In the field studies, we used the transect, indirect observation, and camera-trap methods to collect presence data. Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) (v. 3.4.1) software was used to create habitat suitability models of the target species, which are based on the presence-only data approach. The results indicated that AUC values varied between 0.808 and 0.835, with water sources, stand type, and slope contributing most significantly to model performance. In order to determine wildlife ecological corridors, resistance surface maps were created using the species distribution models (SDMs), and bottleneck areas were determined. The Circuit Theory approach was used to model the connections between ecological corridors. As a result of this study, we developed connectivity models for five large mammals based on Circuit Theory, identified priority wildlife ecological corridors, and evaluated critical connection points between two protected areas, Ilgaz Mountain Wildlife Refuge and Gavurdağı Wildlife Refuge. These findings highlight the essential role of ecological corridors in sustaining landscape-level connectivity and supporting the long-term conservation of wide-ranging species. Full article

Wildland and Forest Fire Emissions on Federally Managed Land in the United States, 2001–2021

In the United States, ecosystems regularly experience wildfires and as fire seasons lengthen, fires are becoming a more important disturbance. While all types of disturbance have impacts on the carbon cycle, fires result in immediate emissions into the atmosphere. To assist managers in assessing wildland fire impacts, particularly on federally managed land, we developed estimates of area burned and related emissions for a 21-year period. These estimates are based on wildland fires defined by the interagency Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity database; emissions are simulated through the Wildland Fire Emissions Inventory System; and the classification of public land is performed according to the US Geological Survey’s Protected Areas Database of the United States. Wildland fires on federal land contributed 62 percent of all annual CO2 emissions from wildfires in the United States between 2001 and 2021. During this period, emissions from the forest fire subset of wildland fires ranged from 328 Tg CO2 in 2004 to 37 Tg CO2 in 2001. While forest fires averaged 38 percent of burned area, they represent the majority—59 to 89 percent of annual emissions—relative to fires in all ecosystems, including non-forest. Wildland fire emissions on land belonging to the federal government accounted for 44 to 77 percent of total annual fire emissions for the entire United States. Land managed by three federal agencies—the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Fish and Wildlife Service—accounted for 93 percent of fire emissions from federal land over the course of the study period, but year-to-year contributions varied. National parks serve as critical spatial units for conserving ecological baselines, maintaining genetic diversity, and delivering essential ecosystem services. However, accelerating socio-economic development has increasingly intensified the conflict between ecological protection and transportation infrastructure. Ecologically sustainable transportation planning is, therefore, essential to mitigate habitat fragmentation, facilitate species migration, and conserve biodiversity. This study examines the Giant Panda National Park and its buffer zone, focusing on six mammal species: giant panda, Sichuan snub-nosed monkey, leopard cat, forest musk deer, rock squirrel, and Sichuan takin. By integrating Maxent ecological niche modeling with circuit theory, it identified ecological source areas and potential corridors, and employed a two-step screening approach to design species-specific wildlife crossings. In total, 39 vegetated overpasses were proposed to serve all target species; 34 underpasses were integrated using existing bridge and culvert structures to minimize construction costs; and 27 canopy bridges, incorporating suspension cables and elevated pathways, were designed to connect forest canopies for arboreal species. This study established a multi-species and multi-scale conservation framework, providing both theoretical insights and practical strategies for ecologically integrated transportation planning in national parks, contributing to the synergy between biodiversity conservation and sustainable development goals. Previous studies have consistently reported the detrimental impact of dam construction on natural populations of softshell turtles across East and Southeast Asia, with particularly severe effects on large-bodied species. The Wattle-necked Softshell Turtle (Palea steindachneri), a large-sized and Critically Endangered member of the family Trionychidae, remains poorly documented throughout much of its native range in Southeast Asia. In this study, we present new field data from the Đà River basin in northern Vietnam, encompassing areas both upstream and downstream of the Sơn La Dam. Data were obtained through a combination of direct field observations, camera trap monitoring, and semi-structured interviews with local fishers and traders. Two individuals of P. steindachneri—including a juvenile—were recorded, providing the first confirmed evidence of ongoing natural reproduction in the region. Additionally, we documented 102 individuals of Pelodiscus sp., encompassing all life stages and indicating a stable, reproducing local population. Despite overlapping in macrohabitat use along the river, the two species were spatially segregated, with a minimum interspecific distance of 8.2 km, suggesting broad sympatry without syntopy, potentially due to microhabitat partitioning. These findings underscore the persistence and likely reproductive viability of P. steindachneri in modified riverine systems affected by dams, and have broader conservation implications for other threatened taxa with similar ecologies, such as Rafetus swinhoei. Urgent conservation actions, including habitat protection, community-based monitoring, and strengthened regulation of the wildlife trade, are essential to ensure the survival of remaining wild populations. The multifunctionality of green infrastructure (GI) can be enhanced through intentional planning that promotes synergies among various functions while minimizing trade-offs. Despite its significance, methodologies for implementing this approach remain underexplored. This paper presents an application-oriented framework for GI planning that emphasizes the relationship between GI functional performance and the provision of ecosystem services. By reframing the issues of multifunctional synergies and trade-offs as quantifiable and spatially explicit problems associated with ecosystem services, the framework offers both a conceptual foundation and technical protocols for practical application. This framework was implemented in the Qinling–Daba Mountain Area (QDMB) in China to evaluate its practicality and identify potential challenges. The planned GI system aims to fulfill multiple functions, including biodiversity maintenance, water and soil conservation, eco-farming, and ecotourism development. Additionally, 73 wildlife corridors were established to connect GI elements, thereby enhancing habitat services for biodiversity. Furthermore, the analysis identified 245 townships and 273 sites as strategic areas and points requiring targeted intervention to mitigate potential multifunctional trade-offs. These locations are characterized by their location within protected areas, protected buffer zones, or wildlife corridors, or at the intersection of wildlife corridors with existing transportation infrastructure. The findings validate the framework’s practicality and highlight the necessity for additional research into the capacity of GI to support diverse human activities and the approaches to enhance GI elements’ connectivity for multifunctionality. Saninten (Castanopsis argentea (Blume) A.DC.) is a protected plant that grows in the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park (MGPNP) area in West Java. Its population is limited, and as a valuable biological resource, Castanopsis has traditionally been utilized by indigenous communities, particularly those residing in proximity to the forest. However, the expansion and development of tourism pose a potential threat to the ecosystems of C. argentea and other endemic plant species, as well as to the wildlife that depend on these habitats. Comprehensive data on biodiversity, species composition, forest structure, and carbon stock status are crucial for assessing the potential impact of future tourism development. Our investigation was conducted from November 2023 to March 2024 in a three-hectare utilization zone within the confines of the national park. The findings documented a total of 36 species across 23 distinct plant families, with the families Fagaceae, Moraceae, and Myrtaceae exhibiting the highest levels of dominance. The regeneration of stands at the study site predominantly comprised arboreal species with the most substantial carbon stocks, including C. acuminatissima (Blume) A.DC. (Riung anak), C. argentea (Saninten), and Litsea sp. (Huru). C. argentea supplies several functions within this ecosystem that are interconnected with other components. With aboveground carbon stocks reaching 560.47 tons C/ha, the forest demonstrates high sequestration potential, reinforcing the need to conserve mature stands for both biodiversity and climate benefits. Therefore, in the future, the conservation of C. argentea will benefit the maintenance of the ecosystem’s attractiveness without adversely affecting the social and cultural structures of the local population. The widespread practice of deliberate human displacement for biodiversity conservation remains a contentious issue in the Anthropocene era. This study explores the ecological impacts of conservation-led resettlement (ER) in Nepal’s Terai Arc Landscape (TAL), a biodiverse region under significant conservation and development pressures. Although ER aims to enhance ecological integrity, the role of displacement in conservation has been understudied. Using case studies from the TAL, we examined ecological indicators in vacated settlement areas within parks and newly resettled sites outside protected zones. Data were collected through a review of secondary literature, 240 household interviews, 5 focus group discussions, 25 key informant interviews, and multiple field visits across resettlement sites. Between 1973 and 2019, TAL gained 922.52 sq. km of core protected areas (displacing over 4800 households) and dispossessed communities from 2120.12 sq. km of buffer zones, significantly expanding protected areas and upgrading conservation standards from IUCN category IV to II. This contributed to the recovery of key species such as tigers, rhinos, and elephants. However, resettlements, often located along critical biological corridors and buffer zones, led to habitat fragmentation, endangering the gene pool flow and creating isolated habitats. Results show that, in general, most ecosystem and environmental variables were perceived significantly different (p < 0.05) among resettled communities in the study area. The cultural and land-based attachments of displaced communities were overlooked. These findings highlight the risks of short-term resettlement planning, which can exacerbate pressures on critical corridors, escalate human–wildlife conflicts, and provide a clear indication of the trade-off between conservation benefits and social costs. Historically protected by cultural traditions, sacred forests are now increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressures, particularly in West Africa, where natural areas and wildlife populations have dwindled as human populations have increased exponentially. Residents in the vicinity of sacred forests play critical roles in conservation success or failure, but few studies have investigated their views. We surveyed 281 residents representing ~100% of households surrounding the sacred forest of Nakpadjoak, a 50-hectare remnant of Sudan-Guinea woodland savanna in northern Togo that is now surrounded by human-dominated landscapes. The majority of residents believe that the sacred forest should be protected (92%) and that access to the forest should be prohibited (55%). Most residents own livestock (93%) and reported that the forest has become a pasture for domestic animals (70%) while wildlife populations have declined (79%). Two-thirds of residents (64%) reported that the forest has changed due to wood cutting, a practice that occurs despite being banned. Most (96%) residents use wood as their primary source of domestic energy, but 90% would switch to alternative fuels, such as natural gas, if available. Unfortunately, despite residents’ desire to protect the forest and external funding for its protection and restoration, Nakpadjoak forest has become increasingly degraded due to ongoing exploitation and conflicts of interest surrounding its use. We recommend bolstering local prohibitions on sacred forest exploitation as well as government interventions such as subsidizing natural gas as an alternative to wood fuel to support the conservation of this and other protected areas in the region, which may otherwise be destroyed. Conserving biodiversity in mixed-land-use areas is essential, as nearly 80% of South Africa’s wild species exist outside protected areas. This study investigated mammalian diversity within the Baviaanskloof catchment, a mixed-use landscape in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It also evaluated how camera setup parameters impact species detectability. Using 131 camera traps over four survey sessions from January 2020 to April 2022, 34 mammalian species were recorded over 21,020 trap days. Biodiversity indices revealed high species diversity with substantial variability across camera locations. Species discovery reached an asymptote at approximately 153 sampling days, though extended monitoring detected rarer species. Cameras positioned at heights of 40–70 cm improved detection rates, while heights above 100 cm reduced captures. However, elevation effects varied across species, highlighting the need for species-specific optimization. Optimal detection angles ranged from 50 to 90°, with extreme angles decreasing capture frequency. North- and south-facing cameras yielded better detection rates, while west-facing orientations introduced glare and reduced visibility. These findings underscore the biodiversity significance of the Baviaanskloof and emphasize the need to optimize camera configurations to enhance wildlife monitoring and conservation strategies in complex, mixed-use landscapes. Filling in the Gaps: Working in Un-Surveyed Areas to Create Baseline Data, Habitat Use and Abundance Estimates for Butterflies in Eastern Wyoming, USA

Butterflies are charismatic insects that are critical pollinators for plants that humans and wildlife depend on; however, butterflies have some of the largest measured declines. Two iconic butterflies in the USA, the Regal Fritillary (Argynnis idalia) and the Monarch (Danaus plexippus), are proposed for protection due to decreasing numbers from overexploitation, agricultural activities, disease and development. We surveyed 145 sites and walked 557 km from mid-June to August in 2019 and 2021 to create baseline information for butterflies and fill in knowledge gaps for these species. We observed 16,986 individuals and identified 52 species of butterflies. Generally, butterflies were more abundant at lower wind speeds and in areas with higher forb cover and less bare ground. We identified more species in locations with taller grass, higher bloom densities, higher cover of forbs, and less bare ground. We observed 11 Regal Fritillaries and 31 Monarchs extending from northeastern to southeastern Wyoming in a variety of habitats. The predicted suitable habitat of Regal Fritillaries and Monarchs was highly influenced by sagebrush cover and mean temperature of the wettest quarter according to species distribution models. Our results provide information to managers about the status, distribution, and habitat use of butterflies in a previously un-surveyed area. Historical butterfly surveys were limited to mountain ecosystems, and we provide baseline information on the habitat characteristics that support the highest abundances and most species in prairie ecosystems that can be compared to future efforts. Response of Bird Communities to Human-Dominated Habitats in Southern Anhui Mountainous Area, China

Given that many species are threatened by human activities, understanding wildlife responses to land use changes is crucial for effective biodiversity conservation. Quantifying species diversity from multiple dimensions provides a more comprehensive understanding of community dynamics, such as insights into functional and phylogenetic diversity, which are crucial for capturing the full complexity of bird communities. In this study, we surveyed bird communities in the Southern Anhui Mountainous Area across four seasons, including two human-dominated land use types (farmland and village) and one natural landscape (forest). Variations in the taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity across land uses and seasons were analyzed, with a focus on community assembly processes. Our results showed that, during spring and summer, human-dominated land use types supported a higher richness in all dimensions (taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic) compared to natural landscapes (H2,168 > 25, p < 0.001). However, due to the influence of migratory birds, villages exhibited the lowest taxonomic evenness (H2,168 = 8.31, p = 0.016), while natural landscapes had a lower phylogenetic evenness (H2,168 = 31.27, p < 0.001). In autumn and winter, no significant differences in richness or evenness were observed between land uses (H2,42 < 5.72, p > 0.05). Functional traits were not fully phylogenetically conserved, as phylogenetic structures tended to cluster, while functional structures were more random. Larger birds were more likely to inhabit human-dominated land use types, while smaller birds favored natural landscapes (H2,168 = 23.06, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that conservation plans should consider human-dominated land use types with an intermediate disturbance, which play crucial roles in maintaining bird diversity. However, natural landscapes harbor species that are absent from human-dominated environments and therefore also require continued protection. Full article
