This qualitative media-archaeology study examines how digital video compression can reshape viewer perception of a legacy television image. A low-resolution online image from the 1976 The Mary Tyler Moore Show is compared with the corresponding image from a commercial DVD. In the compressed 360p online version, Moore’s upper torso appears briefly overexposed during a bubble-bath scene—an interpretation often described as a wardrobe malfunction. However, the higher-resolution DVD clearly shows that Moore maintained broadcast standards by wearing a protective undergarment that became visually erased in the compressed media. This divergence serves as a result of a natural experiment, demonstrating how low-resolution encoding of an image produces edge smoothing, tonal blending, and dissolution of material boundaries. These transformations support an inductive interpretation of materiality collapse, a compression artifact in which garments, skin, and shadows lose visual distinctiveness—creating an image of Mary Tyler Moore perceptually similar to a classical nude sculpture such as the Venus de Milo. Contextual evidence from Moore’s autobiography further clarifies production norms that shaped the bubble-bath scene and contributed to insufficient foam coverage. The findings show how compressed digital video can generate culturally consequential misperceptions, underscoring the need to scrutinize online compressed images posted as material evidence. In recent years, augmented reality has become a popular method of spatial data visualization, both via the most popular and basic plane-based method and more advanced automatic positioning of visualizations based on predefined real-world locations. The aim of this study is to provide new insights into geolocated 3D visualizations in AR using a visual positioning system (VPS). VPS technology enables the creation of visualizations that can be displayed with high accuracy directly on a specific area of interest. This approach is especially well-suited to cultural heritage preservation, as it can be used to visualize destroyed buildings or archaeological sites. The result of the study is a mobile application created using the Unity game engine, which allows users to access AR visualizations as well as additional context in the form of pop-up texts or photographs. Thanks to the display of AR visualization directly at the chosen location, the user can better understand the context of the whole scene. This is because it is a more immersive experience than simply viewing a 3D model on a computer or mobile phone screen. Full article

Background/Objectives: Peritoneal micrometastases (micromets) remain a major barrier to durable cytoreduction in ovarian and other intra-abdominal cancers because lesions are difficult to visualize and are often resistant to systemic therapy. Liposomal doxorubicin (Dox) improves pharmacokinetics but can be limited by slow intratumoral release. Porphyrin-phospholipid (PoP) liposomes enable near-infrared light–triggered release of Dox (chemophototherapy (CPT)), creating an opportunity for intraoperative fluorescence-guided treatment planning and monitoring. Here, we evaluate a laparoscopic fluorescence imaging platform for quantifying light-triggered drug delivery. Methods: LC-Dox-PoP was applied to SCC2095sc and SKOV-3 cultures in 2D monolayers and 3D spheroid clusters. Dox fluorescence was quantified using a laparoscopic fluorescence imaging system over 1–9 μg/mL concentrations and compared with standard well-plate reader measurements. Porphyrin fluorescence was monitored to assess spheroid localization and photobleaching after activation light exposure. Results: For both cell lines, Dox fluorescence exhibited an approximate 4-fold increase at the maximum administered LC-Dox-PoP concentration, following a linear trend in both SCC2095sc and SKOV-3 cultures (R2 = 0.97, 0.98 for 2D and R2 = 0.98, 0.98 for spheroids). Laparoscope-derived fluorescence measurements agreed with well-plate reader measurements (R2 = 0.89–0.96). Porphyrin fluorescence provided stronger complementary contrast for localizing spheroid constructs and decreased after activation light exposure, consistent with photobleaching during triggered release. Conclusions: These results support a quantitative imaging framework for fluorescence-guided monitoring of light-triggered liposomal drug release and may enable individualized CPT dosimetry for peritoneal micrometastases. Findings in SCC2095sc additionally suggest potential relevance of fluorescence-guided CPT for head and neck/oral cancer, where localized post-resection adjuvant treatment may improve control of residual disease. Acid-base analysis is a high-load diagnostic skill that many medical students struggle to master when taught using traditional text-based flowcharts. This multi-institution mixed-methods study evaluated a novel visual mnemonic algorithm that integrated Medimon characters, symbolic imagery, and pop-culture references into the standard acid-base diagnostic framework. First-year medical students (n = 273) at six distributed WWAMI campuses attended an identical lecture on acid-base physiology. Students at five control campuses received the original text-based algorithm, while students at one experimental campus received the Medimon algorithm in addition. Achievement was measured with a unit exam (nine focal items, day 7) and a final exam (four focal items, day 11). A Differences-in-Differences approach compared performance on focal items versus baseline items across sites. Students at the experimental campus showed no significant advantage on the unit exam (DiD = +1.2%, g = 0.12) but demonstrated a larger, but still non-significant, medium-to-large effect on the final exam (DiD = +11.0%, g = 0.85). At the experimental site, 39 students completed the Situational Interest Survey for Multimedia (SIS-M), revealing significantly higher triggered, maintained-feeling, maintained-value, and overall situational interest scores for the Medimon algorithm (all p < 0.001). Thematic analysis of open-ended responses identified four themes: enhanced clarity, improved memorability, increased engagement, and barriers to interpretation. Collectively, the findings suggest that embedding visual mnemonics and serious-game characters into diagnostic algorithms can enhance learner interest and may improve long-term retention in preclinical medical education. Meme analysis, particularly identifying top meme templates, is crucial for understanding digital culture, communication trends, and the spread of online humor, as memes serve as units of cultural transmission that shape public discourse. Tracking popular templates enables researchers to examine their role in social engagement, ideological framing, and viral dynamics within digital ecosystems. This study explored the viral nature of memes by analyzing a large dataset of over 1.5 million meme submissions from Reddit’s r/memes subreddit, spanning from January 2021 to July 2024. The focus was on uncovering the most popular meme templates by applying advanced image processing techniques. Apart from building an overall understanding of the memesphere, the main contribution was a selection of top meme templates providing a recipe for the best meme template for the meme creators (memesters). Using Vision Transformer (ViT) models, visual features of memes were analyzed without the influence of text, and memes were grouped into 1000 clusters that represented distinct templates. By combining image captioning and keyword extraction methods, key characteristics of the templates were identified, highlighting those with the most visual consistency. A deeper examination of the most popular memes revealed that factors like timing, cultural relevance, and references to current events played a significant role in their virality. Although user identity had limited influence on meme success, a closer look at contributors revealed an interesting pattern of a bot account and two prominent users. Ultimately, the study pinpointed the ten most popular meme templates, many of which were based on pop culture, offering insights into what makes a meme likely to go viral in today’s digital culture. The Benedictine Archives at Lazkao contain a multitude of propaganda stickers and related visual media that provide a snapshot of the Basque region’s artful political culture in the 1970s and 1980s. Some of the most compelling examples include several items that remix Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, referencing the famous antiwar painting to become a form of mass-circulated pastiche. This move was somewhat unusual amid the strong nationalist bent of public discourse and art in the Basque Country during this period. Almost entirely unknown outside the region, these materials capture political performance during the decade-long period between the instauration of Spanish democracy (1978) and the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989), when separatist sentiment reached a peak in the Basque Country. This artful visual platform, rendered in the small, focused format of stickers, constitutes a useful index of rhetorical currents within the Basque Country and Spain, as well as an interesting analogue prototype of what we might call, in the twenty-first century, meme culture. Circulated in bars and other public places across the Basque region, and frequently worn upon clothing, the stickers demonstrate a propaganda principle described by Jonathan Auerbach and Russ Castronovo, whereby participants in movements of mass persuasion actively partake in the dissemination and consumption of propaganda. The stickers normally refer to very concrete events (for instance, a one-day celebration, a protest for a concrete situation, etc.). When organized on topics and themes, they create a nonlinear visual account of post-Franco Basque history, providing propaganda narratives that invite performative acts from the audience. This account documents the significance of the vast Benedictine collection for future scholars, analyzing, in detail, four stickers that employ Guernica in their design. It also considers several other representative items from the collections that play on other art forms, as well as pop culture, in their attempt to influence public opinion, politics, and media consumption. In Macao, the government established the Cultural and Creative Industry Promotion Office and Cultural Industries Committee in 2010, which nominated eight to-be-developed cultural and creative industries (CCIs): design, visual arts, performing arts, clothing, pop music, film and video, animation, and publishing. However, because each CCI has its unique pattern and environmental resources are very limited in Macao, an industrial chain analysis for these eight industries should be conducted prior to policy implementation. Therefore, this study organized an industrial feasibility analysis for these eight CCIs. The methodologies included in-depth interviews, a literature analysis, and knowledge-discovery in databases. On the other hand, this study adopted the concept of creative industries, “the relationship between production and reproduction”, and “the three-circle hypothetical interactive consumption” model for positioning these eight CCIs to choose existing industries in Macao, such as the exhibition, gambling, and cultural tourism industries, that are likely to promote CCIs. Next, the orientations of these CCIs are determined. Finally, it is suggested that the performing arts, design, and visual arts industries should be prioritized currently, and the heritage management and digital media industries are advised as to-be-developed ones. In contrast, the clothing, pop music, film and video, animation, and publishing industries are not so beneficial for Macao’s development. Full article

The ongoing discourse on air quality and climate changes positions walkability as a pivotal point of sustainable urban planning. Urban studies examine a city’s walkability in terms of pedestrian flows, design qualities, and street network topology, leaving walkability comparative frameworks under development. Building on the space syntax theory, this research introduces a “walkability compass”, a four spatial indicator-designed tool for city walkability assessment and comparison. The tools are being tested on eight Baltic region cities: Vilnius, Kaunas (LT), Malmö (SE), Riga (LV), Tallinn (ES), Gdansk, Bialystok, Lublin (PL). The nine-step method framework integrates four indexes: Gravity (Gr), Reach (Re), Straightness (St), and Population density (Pop). The “walkability compass” results reveal significant Re and St correlations; thus, visual and cultural aspects become the main factors in pedestrian-friendly cities. The spatial pattern typology has matched similar cities (Malmö and Kaunas) to work closely on sustainable urban planning development. In all case studies, specific walkability zones were mapped, but the Gr zones turned out to be the most compact ones (the Z-score of Gr was ranged from 355.4 to 584; other indexes oscillated between 209.4 and 542.6). The walkability mapping results are publicly shared via WebMap to stimulate the participatory discussion on case studies cities further development. Full article

There are a number of voices who blame digitization for having a number of negative effects on the music industry including a decline in album sales, copyright infringement, unfair royalty payments, and competition with foreign multinationals. Yet, the global emergence of Korean pop music or K-pop suggests a different narrative, particularly given that its growth was largely unexpected among industry experts. Understanding the key to its international breakthrough can thus produce meaningful lessons for the music industries of other countries for their own further take-off. This constitutes the focus for this paper. Digitization has influenced various sectors of the Korean music industry such as business, society, and consumers. It has also transformed the management focus of the industry from analog to digital, from offline to online, from albums to songs, from specialization to integration, from domestic providers to international suppliers, from audio sound to visual images, from possessing to accessing, and from limited integration to synergistic network. This signifies that embracing technology advancement can enhance the competitiveness of cultural industries. Full article

The article is the last in the series of four that present the results of a study on environmental contaminants in coastal Chukotka, conducted in the context of a multi-disciplinary investigation of Indigenous foodways in the region. The article presents the Recommended Food Daily Intake Limit (RFDIL) guidelines of the locally harvested foods in coastal Chukotka. The guidelines were developed based on the results of the analysis of the legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and metals found in the samples of locally harvested food, which was collected in 2016 in the villages of Enmelen, Nunligran, and Sireniki on the south coast of the Chukchi Peninsula, Russian Arctic. The overall aim of the article is to expand the toolset for dealing with the challenges of: (1) setting the dietary recommendations when we assess multiple contaminants in a variety of foods (and our method of RFDILs calculation is an example of a possible approach), and (2) managing the real-life circumstances when many types of foods are mixed in many dishes regularly and the concentrations of contaminants in these mixed dishes become uncertain. Drawing on perspectives from the fields of environmental health sciences, humanities, social sciences, and visual art, the authors consider the RFDILs of the examined foods in the context of the culinary practices and aesthetics values (those that relate to the culturally held ideas of beauty ascribed to a dish or the processes of its preparation and consumption) of the Indigenous Arctic cuisine in the region of the Bering Strait, and in the broader dynamics of food and culture. During the past decade a few artists and even fewer entomologists discovered flatbed scanning technology, using extreme resolution graphical arts scanners for acquiring high magnification digital images of plants, animals and inanimate objects. They are not just for trip receipts anymore. The special attributes of certain scanners, to image thick objects is discussed along with the technical features of the scanners including magnification, color depth and shadow detail. The work of pioneering scanner artist, Joseph Scheer from New York’s Alfred University is highlighted. Representative flatbed-scanned images of moths are illustrated along with techniques to produce them. Collecting and preparing moths, and other objects, for scanning are described. Highlights of the Fulbright sabbatical year of professor Scheer in Arizona and Sonora, Mexico are presented, along with comments on moths in science, folklore, art and pop culture. The use of flatbed scanners is offered as a relatively new method for visualizing small objects while acquiring large files for creating archival inkjet prints for display and sale. Full article
