Smart living is strongly promoted to enhance the quality of life via the application of innovative solutions, and this is driven by domain specialists and policymakers, including designers, urban planners, computer engineers, and property developers. Nonetheless, the actual user, whose views ought to be considered during the design and development of smart living systems, has received little attention. Thus, this study aims to identify and examine the critical smart functions to achieve smart living in smart buildings based on occupants’ perceptions. The aim is achieved using a sequential quantitative research method involving a literature review and 221 valid survey data gathered from a case of a smart student residence in Hong Kong. The method is further integrated with descriptive statistics, the Kruskal–Walli’s test, and the criticality test. The results were validated via a post-survey with related experts. Twenty-six critical smart functions for smart living were revealed, with the top three including the ability to protect personal data and information privacy, provide real-time safety and security, and the ability to be responsive to users’ needs. A need was discovered to consider the context of buildings during the design of smart living systems, and the recommendation is for professionals to understand the kind of digital technology to be integrated into a building by strongly considering the context of the building and how smart living will be achieved within it based on users’ perceptions. The study provides valuable insights into the occupants’ perceptions of critical smart features/functions for policymakers and practitioners to consider in the construction of smart living systems, specifically students’ smart buildings. This study contributes to knowledge by identifying the critical smart functions to achieve smart living based on occupants’ perceptions of smart living by considering the specific context of a smart student building facility constructed in Hong Kong. Pharmacist-Driven Chondroprotection in Osteoarthritis: A Multifaceted Approach Using Patient Education, Information Visualization, and Lifestyle Integration

Osteoarthritis (OA) remains a major contributor to pain and disability; however, the current management is largely reactive, focusing on symptoms rather than preventing irreversible cartilage loss. This review first examines the mechanistic foundations for pharmacological chondroprotection—illustrating how conventional agents, such as glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate, can potentially restore extracellular matrix (ECM) components, may attenuate catabolic enzyme activity, and might enhance joint lubrication—and explores the delivery challenges posed by avascular cartilage and synovial diffusion barriers. Subsequently, a practical “What–How–When” framework is introduced to guide community pharmacists in risk screening, DMOAD selection, chronotherapeutic dosing, safety monitoring, and lifestyle integration, as exemplified by the CHONDROMOVING infographic brochure designed for diverse health literacy levels. Building on these strategies, the P4–4P Chondroprotection Framework is proposed, integrating predictive risk profiling (physicians), preventive pharmacokinetic and chronotherapy optimization (pharmacists), personalized biomechanical interventions (physiotherapists), and participatory self-management (patients) into a unified, feedback-driven OA care model. To translate this framework into routine practice, I recommend the development of DMOAD-specific clinical guidelines, incorporation of chondroprotective chronotherapy and interprofessional collaboration into health-professional curricula, and establishment of multidisciplinary OA management pathways—supported by appropriate reimbursement structures, to support preventive, team-based management, and prioritization of large-scale randomized trials and real-world evidence studies to validate the long-term structural, functional, and quality of life benefits of synchronized DMOAD and exercise-timed interventions. This comprehensive, precision-driven paradigm aims to shift OA care from reactive palliation to true disease modification, preserving cartilage integrity and improving the quality of life for millions worldwide. The Impact of Mergers and Acquisitions on Firm Environmental Performance: Empirical Evidence from China

In this study, we examine the impact of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) on firm environmental performance, aiming to address the gap in research and guide firms, investors, and policymakers toward more environmentally conscious decision-making in M&A. Using panel data from Chinese A-share listed firms (2008–2022), we estimate a two-way fixed effect model. The Propensity Score Matching and the instrumental variable method address potential endogeneity concerns, and robustness checks validate the findings. We found that M&As have a significantly positive effect on firm environmental performance, with heterogeneous impacts across regions, industries, and M&A types. The environmental benefits are most pronounced in heavily polluting industries and hybrid M&A deals. Eastern China shows more modest improvements. The results of mechanism tests revealed that M&As enhance environmental performance primarily by boosting total factor productivity and fostering innovation. This study offers a novel perspective by linking M&A activities to environmental sustainability, enriching the literature on both M&As and corporate environmental performance. We show that even conventional M&A deals (not sustainability-focused) can improve environmental performance through operational synergies. Expanding beyond polluting industries, we reveal how sector characteristics shape M&A’s environmental impacts. We identify practical mechanisms through which standard M&A activities can advance sustainability goals, helping firms balance economic and environmental objectives. It provides empirical evidence from China, an emerging market with distinct institutional and regulatory contexts. The findings offer guidance for firms engaging in M&A to strategically improve sustainability performance. Policymakers can leverage these insights to design incentives for M&A in pollution-intensive industries, aligning economic growth with environmental goals. By demonstrating that M&As can enhance environmental outcomes, this study supports the potential for market-driven mechanisms to contribute to broader societal sustainability objectives, such as reduced industrial pollution and greener production practices. With the electrification of generator sets, electric locomotives, new energy vehicles, and other industries, AC motors subject bearings to an electric field environment, leading to galvanic corrosion due to the use of variable frequency power supply drives. The phenomenon of bearing discharge breakdown in subway traction motors is a critical issue in understanding the relationship between shaft current strength and the extent of bearing damage. This paper analyzes the mechanism of impulse discharge that leads to galvanic corrosion damage in bearings at a microscopic level and conducts electric thermal coupling simulations of the traction motor bearing discharge breakdown process. It examines the temperature rise associated with lubricant film discharge breakdown during the dynamic operation of the bearing and investigates how breakdown channel parameters and operational conditions affect the temperature rise in the micro-region of bearing lubrication. Ultimately, the results of the electric thermal coupling simulation are validated through experimental tests. This study revealed that in an electric field environment, the load-bearing area of the outer ring experiences significantly more severe corrosion damage than the inner ring, whereas non-bearing areas remain unaffected by electrolytic corrosion. When the inner ring reaches a speed of 4500_rpm, the maximum widths of electrolytic corrosion pits for the outer and inner rings are measured at 89 um and 51 um, respectively. Additionally, the highest recorded temperatures for the breakdown channels in the outer and inner rings are 932 °C and 802 °C, respectively. Furthermore, as the inner ring speed increases, both the width of the electrolytic corrosion pits and the temperature of the breakdown channels rise. Specifically, at inner ring speeds of 2500_rpm, 3500_rpm, and 4500_rpm, the widths of the electrolytic pits in the outer ring raceway load zone were measured at 34 um, 56 um, and 89 um, respectively. The highest temperatures of the lubrication film breakdown channels were recorded as 612 °C, 788 °C, and 932 °C, respectively. This study provides a theoretical basis and data support for the protective and maintenance practices of traction motor bearings. Full article

Research on children’s singing development is extensive. Different ages, approaches, and variables have been taken into consideration. However, research on singing with text or a neutral syllable is scarce, and findings are inconclusive. This study investigated the influence of singing with text and a neutral syllable on children’s vocal performance. Children aged 4 to 9 (n = 135) participated in two periods of instruction and assessment. In Period One, Song 1 was taught with text and Song 2 with a neutral syllable, and in Period Two, the text was added to Song 2. In each period, children were individually audio-recorded singing both songs. Three independent raters scored the songs’ vocal performances using two researcher-designed rating scales, one for each song, which included the assessment of tonal and rhythm dimensions. Before data analysis, the validity and reliability of the rating scales used to assess vocal performance were examined and assured. The results revealed that 4-, 5-, and 7-year-olds sang Song 1 significantly better in Period One, and 4- and 5-year-olds sang Song 1 significantly better in Period Two. Thus, singing with text seems to favour younger children’s vocal performance. Findings also revealed that girls scored significantly higher than boys for Song 1 in both periods, but not for Song 2 in Period One. The implications of incorporating songs with text and neutral syllables into music programs, as well as the instruments used to assess vocal performances, are discussed. Full article

Cumulative mistuning effects in electric vehicle wireless charging systems, arising from component tolerances, coil misalignments, and aging-induced drifts, can significantly degrade system performance. To mitigate this issue, this work establishes an analysis model for mistuned series–series-compensated wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. Through equivalent simplification of mistuned parameters, we systematically examine the effects of compensation capacitances and coil inductances on input impedance, output power, and efficiency in SS-compensated topologies across wide load ranges and different coupling coefficients. Results reveal that transmitter-side parameter deviations exert more pronounced impacts on input impedance and power gain than receiver-side variations. Remarkably, under receiver-side inductance mistuning of −20%, a significant 32° shift in the input impedance angle was observed. Experimental validation on a 500 W prototype confirms ≤5% maximum deviation between calculated and measured values for efficiency, input impedance angle, and power gain. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cancer suffers from unresolved therapeutic challenges owing to the lack of targeted therapies and heightened recurrence risk. This study aimed to investigate the new series of hydroxamate by structurally modifying the pharmacophore of vorinostat. Methods: The present work involves the synthesis of 15 differently substituted 2H-1,2,3-triazole-based hydroxamide analogs by employing triazole ring as a cap with varied linker fragments. The compounds were evaluated for their anticancer effect, especially their anti-breast cancer response. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to examine binding interactions. Results: Results indicated that among all synthesized hybrids, the molecule VI(i) inhibits the growth of MCF-7 and A-549 cells (GI50 < 10 μg/mL) in an antiproliferative assay. Compound VI(i) was also tested for cytotoxic activity by employing an MTT assay against A549, MCF-7, and MDA-MB-231 cell lines, and the findings indicate its potent anticancer response, especially against MCF-7 cells with IC50 of 60 µg/mL. However, it experiences minimal toxicity towards the normal cell line (HEK-293). Mechanistic studies revealed a dual-pathway activation: first, apoptosis (17.18% of early and 10.22% of late apoptotic cells by annexin V/PI analysis); second, cell cycle arrest at the S and G2/M phases. It also promotes ROS generation in a concentration-dependent manner. The HDAC–inhibitory assay, extended in silico molecular docking, and MD simulation experiments further validated its significant binding affinity towards HDAC 1 and 6 isoforms. DFT and ADMET screening further support the biological proclivity of the title compounds. The notable biological contribution of VI(i) highlights it as a potential candidate, especially against breast cancer cells. Full article

The abandoned goaf resulting from coal resource integration in China poses a significant threat to coal mine safety. The transient electromagnetic method (TEM) has emerged as a crucial technology for detecting goafs in coal mines due to its adaptable equipment and efficient implementation. In recent years, small-loop TEM has demonstrated high resolution and adaptability in challenging terrains with vegetation, such as coal mine ponding areas, karst regions, and reservoir seepage scenarios. By considering the sedimentary characteristics of coal seams and addressing the resistivity changes encountered in single-point inversion, a joint optimization inversion process incorporating lateral weighting factors and vertical roughness constraints has been developed to enhance the connectivity between adjacent survey points and improve the continuity of inversion outcomes. Through an OCCAM inversion approach, the regularization factor is dynamically determined by evaluating the norms of the data objective function and model objective function in each iteration, thereby reducing the reliance of inversion results on the initial model. Using the Xiaolong Coal Mine as a geological context, the impact of lateral and vertical weighting factors on the inversion outcomes of high- and low-resistivity structural models is examined through a control variable method. The analysis reveals that optimal inversion results are achieved with a combination of a lateral weighting factor of 0.5 and a vertical weighting factor of 0.1, ensuring both result continuity and accurate depiction of vertical and lateral electrical interfaces. The practical application of this approach validates its effectiveness, offering theoretical support and technical assurance for old goaf detection in coal mines, thereby holding significant engineering value. Histotripsy is a novel, noninvasive, non-thermal technology invented in 2004 for the precise destruction of biologic tissue. It offers a powerful alternative to more conventional thermal or surgical interventions. Using short-pulse, low-duty cycle ultrasonic waves, histotripsy creates cavitation bubble clouds that selectively and precisely destroy targeted tissue in a predefined volume while sparing critical structures like bile ducts, ureters, and blood vessels. Such precision is of value when treating tumors near vital structures. The FDA has cleared histotripsy for the treatment of all liver tumors. Major medical centers are currently spearheading clinical trials, and some institutions have already integrated the technology into patient care. Histotripsy is now being studied for a host of other cancers, including primary kidney and pancreatic tumors. Preclinical murine and porcine models have already revealed promising outcomes. One of histotripsy’s primary advantages is its non-thermal mechanical actuation. This feature allows it to circumvent the limitations of heat-based techniques, including the heat sink effect and unpredictable treatment margins near sensitive tissues. In addition to its non-invasive ablative capacities, it is being preliminarily explored for its potential to induce immunomodulation and promote abscopal inhibition of distant, untreated tumors through CD8+ T cell responses. Thus, it may provide a multilayered therapeutic effect in the treatment of cancer. Histotripsy has the potential to improve precision and outcomes across a multitude of specialties, from oncology to cardiovascular medicine. Continued trials are crucial to further expand its applications and validate its long-term efficacy. Due to the speed of recent developments, the goal of this review is to provide a comprehensive and updated overview of histotripsy. It will explore its physics-based mechanisms, differentiating it from similar technologies, discuss its clinical applications, and examine its advantages, limitations, and future. Full article

In this narrative review, we explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in managing lumbar degenerative conditions, a topic that has recently garnered significant interest. The use of AI-based solutions in spine surgery is particularly appealing due to its potential applications in preoperative planning and outcome prediction. This study aims to clarify the impact of artificial intelligence models on the diagnosis and prognosis of common types of degenerative conditions: lumbar disc herniation, spinal stenosis, and eventually spinal fusion. Additionally, the study seeks to identify predictive factors for lumbar fusion surgery based on a review of the literature from the past 10 years. From the literature search, 96 articles were examined. The literature on this topic appears to be consistent, describing various models that show promising results, particularly in predicting outcomes. However, most studies adopt a retrospective approach and often lack detailed information about imaging features, intraoperative findings, and postoperative functional metrics. Additionally, the predictive performance of these models varies significantly, and few studies include external validation. The application of artificial intelligence in treating degenerative spine conditions, while valid and promising, is still in a developmental phase. However, over the last decade, there has been an exponential growth in studies related to this subject, which is beginning to pave the way for its systematic use in clinical practice. Full article

Technology Advancements and the Needs of Farmers: Mapping Gaps and Opportunities in Row Crop Farming

Increased food production demands, labor shortages, and environmental concerns are driving the need for innovative agricultural technologies. However, effective adoption depends critically on aligning robot innovations with the needs of farmers. This paper examines the alignment between the needs of farmers and the robotic systems used in row crop farming. We review current commercial agricultural robots and research, and map these to the needs of farmers, as expressed in the literature, to identify the key issues holding back large-scale adoption. From initial pool of 184 research articles, 19 survey articles, and 82 commercial robotic solutions, we selected 38 peer-reviewed academic studies, 12 survey articles, and 18 commercially available robots for in-depth review and analysis for this study. We identify the key challenges faced by farmers and map them directly to the current and emerging capabilities of agricultural robots. We supplement the data gathered from the literature review of surveys and case studies with in-depth interviews with nine farmers to obtain deeper insights into the needs and day-to-day operations. Farmers reported mixed reactions to current technologies, acknowledging efficiency improvements but highlighting barriers such as capital costs, technical complexity, and inadequate support systems. There is a notable demand for technologies for improved plant health monitoring, soil condition assessment, and enhanced climate resilience. We then review state-of-the-art robotic solutions for row crop farming and map these technological capabilities to the farmers’ needs. Only technologies with field validation or operational deployment are included, to ensure practical relevance. These mappings generate insights that underscore the need for lightweight and modular robot technologies that can be adapted to diverse farming practices, as well as the need for farmers’ education and simpler interfaces to robotic operations and data analysis that are actionable for farmers. Reference Values for Liver Stiffness in Newborns by Gestational Age, Sex, and Weight Using Three Different Elastography Methods

Objective: To determine reference values of liver stiffness during the first week of extrauterine life in healthy newborns, according to gestational age, sex, and birth weight, using three elastography techniques: point shear wave elastography (pSWE) and two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) with convex and linear probes. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study conducted at a single center on a hospital-based cohort of 287 newborns between 24 and 42 weeks of gestation, admitted between January 2023 and May 2024. Cases with liver disease, significant neonatal morbidity, or technically invalid studies were excluded. Hepatic elastography was performed during the first week of life using pSWE and 2D-SWE with both convex and linear probes. Clinical and technical neonatal variables were recorded. Liver stiffness values were analyzed in relation to gestational age, birth weight, and sex. Linear regression models were applied to assess associations, considering p-values < 0.05 as statistically significant. Results: After applying exclusion criteria, valid liver stiffness measurements were obtained in 208 cases with pSWE, 224 with 2D-SWE (convex probe), and 222 with 2D-SWE (linear probe). A statistically significant inverse association between liver stiffness and gestational age (p < 0.03) was observed across all techniques except for 2D-SWE with the linear probe. Only 2D-SWE with the convex probe showed a significant association with birth weight. No significant differences were observed based on neonatal sex. The 2D-SWE technique with the convex probe demonstrated significantly shorter examination times compared to pSWE (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Neonatal liver stiffness measured by pSWE and 2D-SWE with a convex probe shows an inverse correlation with gestational age, potentially reflecting the structural and functional maturation of the liver. These techniques are safe, reliable, and provide useful information for distinguishing normal findings in preterm neonates from early hepatic pathology. The values obtained represent a valuable reference for clinical hepatic assessment in the neonatal period. Full article

GSTM5 as a Potential Biomarker for Treatment Resistance in Prostate Cancer

Background/Objectives: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is widely used to manage prostate cancer (PC), but the emergence of treatment resistance remains a major clinical challenge. Although the GST family has been implicated in drug resistance, the specific role of GSTM5 remains poorly understood. This study investigates whether GSTM5, alone or in combination with clinical variables, can improve patient stratification based on the risk of early treatment resistance. Methods: In silico analyses were performed to examine GSTM5’s role in protein interactions, molecular pathways, and gene expression. The rs3768490 polymorphism was genotyped in 354 patients with PC, classified by ADT response. Descriptive analysis and logistic regression models were applied to evaluate associations between genotype, clinical variables, and ADT response. GSTM5 expression related to the rs3768490 genotype and ADT response was also analyzed in 129 prostate tissue samples. Results: The T/T genotype of rs3768490 was significantly associated with a lower likelihood of early ADT resistance in both individual (p = 0.0359, Odd Ratios (OR) = 0.18) and recessive models (p = 0.0491, OR = 0.21). High-risk classification according to D’Amico was strongly associated with early progression (p < 0.0004; OR > 5.4). Combining genotype and clinical risk improved predictive performance, highlighting their complementary value in stratifying patients by treatment response. Additionally, GSTM5 expression was slightly higher in T/T carriers, suggesting a potential protective role against ADT resistance. Conclusions: The T/T genotype of rs3768490 may protect against ADT resistance by modulating GSTM5 expression in PC. These preliminary findings highlight the potential of integrating genetic biomarkers into clinical models for personalized treatment strategies, although further studies are needed to validate these observations. This study explores how corporate governance reforms can enhance financial reporting quality and organizational transparency, focusing on Greece’s transition from Law 3016/2002 to Law 4706/2020. The legislative reform aimed to modernize governance structures, align national practices with international standards, and strengthen investor protection in a post-crisis economic environment. Moving beyond a simple legal comparison, the study examines how Law 3016/2002’s formal compliance model contrasts with Law 4706/2020’s more substantive accountability framework. We hypothesize that Law 4706/2020 introduces substantively stronger governance mechanisms than its predecessor, thereby improving transparency and investor protection, while compliance with the new law imposes materially greater administrative and financial burdens, especially on small- and mid-cap firms. Methodologically, the research employs a narrative literature review and a structured comparative legal analysis to assess the administrative and financial implications of the new law for publicly listed companies, focusing on board composition and diversity, internal controls, suitability policies, and disclosure requirements. Drawing on prior comparative evidence, we posit that Law 4706/2020 will foster governance and disclosure improvements, enhanced oversight, and clearer board roles. However, these measures also impose compliance burdens. Due to the heterogeneity of listed companies and the lack of firm-level data following Law 4706/2020’s implementation, the findings are neither fully generalizable nor quantifiable; future quantitative research using event studies or panel data is required to validate the hypotheses. We conclude that Greece’s new framework is a critical step toward sustainable corporate governance and more transparent financial reporting, offering regulators, practitioners, and scholars examining legal reform’s impact on governance effectiveness and financial reporting integrity. Background: The education process for newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) patients and their families, primarily led by diabetes specialist nurses, is essential for gaining knowledge about the disease and its management. However, few assessment tools have been employed to evaluate long-term knowledge retention among T1D patients years after diagnosis. Methods: We developed a 20-question test to assess the knowledge of patients and their families at the conclusion of the initial education process and again 6–12 months later. Demographic and clinical data were also collected. Statistical analyses included comparisons between the first and second test results, as well as evaluation of potential contributing factors. The internal consistency and construct validity of the questionnaire were evaluated. Results: Forty-four patients completed both assessments, with a median interval of 11.5 months between them. The average score on the first test was 88.6, which declined to 82.7 on the second assessment (p < 0.001). In univariate analysis, factors positively associated with higher scores included Jewish ethnicity, lower HbA1c levels, and shorter hospitalization duration. Multivariate analysis revealed that parents had lower odds of experiencing a significant score decline compared to patients. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.69, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified eight components accounting for 67.1% of the total variance. Conclusions: Healthcare providers should consider offering re-education to patients and their families approximately one year after diagnosis, with particular attention to high-risk populations during the initial education phase. Further studies are needed to examine this tool’s performance in larger cohorts. Full article
