Digital technologies are increasingly integrated into agricultural production, rural services, finance, and information infrastructure, creating opportunities to improve low-carbon agricultural performance. This study develops an applied evaluation framework linking rural digital technology systems with agricultural carbon emission efficiency. Using panel data from 30 Chinese provinces during 2011–2023, we construct a digital village technology index covering digital infrastructure, digital financial infrastructure, digital service platforms, and digital living scenarios. Agricultural carbon emission efficiency is measured using a super-efficiency slacks-based measure (SBM) model incorporating inputs, desirable output, and undesirable carbon emissions. Two-way fixed-effects models, instrumental-variable estimation, mediation tests, moderation analysis, and heterogeneity tests are then employed. The results show that rural digital technology systems are positively associated with agricultural carbon emission efficiency. Agricultural technological innovation and agricultural socialized services are examined as potential channels, and fiscal support for agriculture is considered as an institutional condition that may shape the DVC–ACEE relationship. The subgroup results suggest that this association is more evident in flat-terrain and large-/medium-urban-scale regions. Urban expansion, peri-urban growth, and evolving mobility service systems are reshaping the functional links between urban and rural areas. As these relationships become increasingly complex, conventional urban–rural classifications may underestimate the spatial differences in everyday accessibility, environmental conditions, and demographic exposure. To capture these interrelated dimensions, this study develops a GeoAI-enabled Accessibility–Environment–Equity (AEE) framework to analyse the urban–rural continuum as a multidimensional functional space. Using Odense municipality as a case study, the framework incorporates network accessibility indicators, environmental benefit and pressure proxies, and demographic exposure indicators within a hexagonal tessellation. The indicators are combined into a standardised AEE feature matrix, interpreted through a principal component analysis, and classified using Gaussian mixture modelling with posterior-probability uncertainty mapping. The resulting typology shows a distinct but non-uniform core–periphery gradient: the central areas exhibit high accessibility and population density but lower green space availability and higher environmental pressure proxies, while the peripheral areas are greener but less accessible by non-car modes. The benchmarking against single-domain reference classifications reveals that the functional typology is primarily shaped by accessibility and demographic density structures rather than by greenness alone. This study advances urban–rural continuum (URC) research by demonstrating how GeoAI-enabled workflows can identify functional transition zones and accessibility–environment mismatches, supporting more evidence-based planning for medium-sized European cities and their surrounding urban–rural transition zones. Carbon balance capacity (CBC) and urban–rural integration (URI) represent two interconnected systems involving ecological sustainability and socioeconomic development. Understanding their interactions is essential for advancing low-carbon development, yet the spatial heterogeneity and directional relationships between these systems remain insufficiently explored. Using panel data for 30 Chinese provinces from 2005 to 2024, this study measures CBC by assessing the relative capacity of regional carbon absorption to balance carbon emissions and constructs URI as a composite index based on a five-dimensional indicator system covering population, economy, space, society, and ecology. Exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) and the Dumitrescu–Hurlin panel Granger causality test are then applied to examine the spatiotemporal dynamics and directional relationships between CBC and URI. The results show that carbon emissions exhibit an increasingly pronounced “high East–low West” pattern, whereas carbon absorption maintains a relatively stable “high West–low East” distribution. Accordingly, CBC shows a contraction of high-value regions and increasing concentration of carbon balance advantages in ecologically endowed provinces. Meanwhile, URI has improved continuously, with spatial, ecological, and social dimensions becoming increasingly important, while economic integration remains relatively limited. Granger causality analysis reveals substantial heterogeneity in CBC–URI interactions, with decoupling as the dominant pattern, while some regions exhibit development-related pressures or ecological constraints during urban–rural transformation. Positive interaction pathways, where urban–rural integration contributes to improvements in carbon balance capacity, are identified only in a limited number of regions, indicating diverse evolutionary pathways between urban–rural transformation and carbon balance capacity. This study further develops a typological framework and identifies differentiated development pathways toward more coordinated CBC–URI interactions, providing empirical evidence and policy insights for place-based low-carbon urban–rural transformation. Background: Over the past decade, the East New Britain Provincial Health Authority in Papua New Guinea has worked with partner research organisations to implement data-driven interventions to improve immunisation coverage. This paper reports on facility assessments conducted as part of a cross-sectional study to understand improvements and identify enablers and barriers to routine childhood immunisation in the province. Methods: Between May and August 2023, nine urban and rural health facilities, providing immunisation services at the time of the study in five areas, were assessed using an adapted World Health Organisation (WHO) Service Availability and Readiness Assessment tool. The tool evaluated facility characteristics, routine childhood immunisation readiness and vaccine supply data. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and findings were mapped to adapted WHO health system categories to identify service delivery improvement priorities. Findings: Several aspects of immunisation service availability and quality had improved since an assessment in 2016/17. Strengths included fixed-facility and outreach service models tailored to catchment populations, high availability of cold chain and vaccine administration equipment, improved immunisation guidance and job-aids. Priority areas included increasing workforce capacity, improving health record completion to inform outreach, increasing availability of guidelines and reporting tools, reducing stock-outs and enhancing stock tracking. Conclusions: Offering accessible vaccination at every opportunity and using quality data to inform programme implementation and resource allocation are priorities for the Provincial Health Authority. This facility-level assessment identified existing immunisation delivery strengths and highlighted community- and provincial-level priority investment areas to strengthen facility capacity and routine immunisation service delivery. Traditional villages preserve regional cultural memory and distinctive rural landscapes while embodying the historical evolution of human–land relationships. This study examines the spatial distribution and influencing factors of 221 nationally listed traditional villages in central Shanxi using GIS-based spatial analysis, standard deviational ellipse analysis, river and road buffer analyses, and the optimal parameters-based geographical detector (OPGD). The villages are significantly clustered in a multi-core, locally contiguous pattern oriented along a northeast–southwest axis. Most are located at elevations of 500–1000 m. Village frequencies vary nonlinearly with distance from rivers and roads, suggesting trade-offs among water access, hazard avoidance, and transport connectivity. Temperature, population density, GDP, and elevation show relatively strong explanatory power, while the interaction between urbanization rate and population density has the highest explanatory power. By linking historical formation conditions with contemporary development pressures, this study proposes a cultural landscape network organized around high-density village clusters, water-system and historical transport corridors, and major mountain–basin landscape units, supported by differentiated conservation zoning and context-specific rural spatial governance. These findings provide region-specific evidence for living heritage conservation and sustainable rural governance. Full article

Artificial intelligence technologies, as exemplified by industrial robots, have become a key factor reshaping the spatial distribution of the labor force in China’s urban and rural areas. Building on the classic Lewis paradigm, this study uncovers the underlying logic and evolutionary patterns of rural–urban labor migration in China under the dual influences of industrial robotics applications and Chinese institutional constraints. Subsequently, in this study, we conducted an empirical analysis using interprovincial data from China between 2006 and 2024 and found that the impact of industrial robot applications on rural-to-urban labor migration follows an inverted U-shaped pattern. Mechanistic analysis indicated that this was primarily attributable to the labor price effect triggered by changes in the urban–rural income gap and the dynamic evolution of the urban sector’s demand for migrant workers. Further, we found that the urban–rural dual-system structure exerted a significant moderating effect on the aforementioned inverted U-shaped relationship. Specifically, regions with relatively solidified dual-system structures showed a delay in the inflection point of the inverted U-shaped curve. This indicated that, in response to the impact of industrial robots, the dual-system structure objectively provides additional transition adaptation time for migrant workers. The conclusions from this study are of great significance for sustainable urbanization in China in the digital intelligence era. Full article

Understanding the interactions between rural household decision-making behavior and the environment is critical to promoting sustainable rural development. Analyzing the interrelationship between multidestination urban housing purchases, homestead improvement potential, and village environments can provide a theoretical basis for formulating rural revitalization policies. This study uses full-sample household survey data, applying multiscale geographically weighted regression to assess spatial variability and K-means clustering to categorize effects. The findings reveal significant spatial heterogeneity in village homestead improvement potential, most strongly associated with locational attributes, water network density, residential quality, and social factors. The association between multidestination urban housing purchases and improvement potential varies by destination: township purchases are positively associated with it, whereas purchases in county centers and beyond show negative associations. The spatial variability of different factors is significant, allowing villages to be classified into five zones based on dominant factors. Tailored, zone-specific policy directions—developing a county-level dual-core urban system, promoting rural tourism, and encouraging concentrated local habitation—are proposed as testable hypotheses for supporting in situ urbanization and homestead land improvement. This study aims to identify the key destination-related factors associated with tourists’ revisit behavior in peri-urban rural areas within Chinese metropolitan regions in the context of short-video marketing, and to reveal the structural relationships and hierarchical characteristics among these factors. First, the LDA topic model was employed to conduct text mining on authentic tourist-generated comments posted on Douyin, through which the core factors related to revisit behavior were identified and conceptually standardized based on tourists’ expressions. Building on this process, 153 experts in relevant fields were invited to evaluate the direction and strength of the relationships among these factors. An integrated DEMATEL–ISM–MICMAC approach was then applied to analyze their causal attributes, hierarchical structure, and systemic roles. The results indicate that the identified factors do not operate independently but instead form a multilayered structure with clear hierarchical characteristics. Among them, rural visual imagery, escape-oriented experience, rural lifestyle experience, and rural industry integration occupy deeper structural levels and exert relatively strong structural influences on factors located at intermediate and surface levels. The findings further suggest that the sustained attractiveness of rural tourism destinations in metropolitan regions cannot rely solely on short-video exposure or isolated “internet-famous” attractions; rather, it requires coordinated alignment among digital communication content, rural industries, lifestyle experiences, and tourism supply. By integrating tourist-generated content, natural language processing, and expert-based structural assessment, this study extends research on short-video tourism marketing from a systems perspective and provides practical insights for peri-urban rural destinations in Chinese metropolitan regions seeking to optimize the structural configuration of tourism resources, products and services, and marketing communication. Global commodity chains reshape rural territories through interconnected environmental and socioeconomic processes; these dynamics are often examined through the lens of land-use change. Export-oriented agricultural frontiers illustrate how global market integration can generate landscape and societal transformations. In western Mexico, the expansion of the avocado industry exemplifies commodity-driven territorial change, linking land-use dynamics with transformations in rural economies and livelihoods. This study analyzes how export integration into the international avocado commodity chain was associated with transformations in land systems and socioeconomic dynamics across four municipalities in Michoacán, Mexico, between 2003 and 2023. Using high-resolution land-use maps alongside demographic and socioeconomic indicators, we apply a qualitative, comparative and inductive synthesis of spatial and census data to examine how commodity integration interacted with local conditions to shape landscape and territorial organization. Avocado expansion coincided with territorial transformation, including the conversion of pine-oak forest and traditional agricultural lands, as well as changes in labor arrangements, demographic dynamics, and rural livelihood systems. Land-use analysis shows continued orchard expansion and accelerated land conversion after 2015. Socioeconomic indicators reveal population growth, increased female employment, and persistent income inequality, highlighting the uneven incorporation of rural territories into global commodity chains. We identified four territorial pathways: agricultural specialization, agro-industrial urbanization, transitional diversification, and rural commodity integration. These findings contribute to debates on uneven geographical development and commodity frontier expansion by showing how global commodity integration intersects with ecological, economic, and social processes to generate distinct pathways. Rapid urbanization has led to habitat fragmentation in peri-urban areas, continuously eroding the ecological foundation of sustainable food systems in urban–rural transition zones and posing a real threat to regional food security. Against the backdrop of urbanization disturbances, traditional nature-based solutions have limitations in addressing socioecological nonlinear responses, whereas digital tools offer new governance pathways for enhancing food system resilience. To elucidate the intrinsic mechanisms through which digital technology empowers the resilience of peri-urban food systems, this study, which is grounded in ecological wisdom theory, constructs a system dynamics model that integrates “digital technology-ecological perception-ecological wisdom capital” in a three-dimensional linkage. This model simulates the dynamic process through which sustainable food systems in urban–rural transition zones resist the risks of habitat fragmentation and achieve synergistic steady-state evolution. According to the simulation results, a synthesized steady-state transition in sustainable food systems can be regarded as a self-organizing phase transition process. During resource metabolism, system elements show strong nonlinear symbiotic and mutually beneficial features. Further, there is a significant time-lag effect on improving food system resilience through digital technology empowerment and policy coordination. Also, the effects of governance are not immediately visible. Further, as an important instrumental empowerment carrier, urban–rural spatial and information barriers can be broken through means like digital ecological monitoring. Moderate investment in this regard can promote the acceleration of the system’s self-organizing phase transition. Also, this can enhance resilience against disturbance from habitat fragmentation while ensuring food production and supply. Finally, the ecological carrying capacity of core food production spaces does not increase monotonically. This means that the system possesses an adaptive cyclical fluctuation mechanism, with a periodic oscillatory evolution of carrying capacity. This study breaks through static analytical paradigms, fills the quantitative research gap on the resilience evolution of peri-urban food systems driven by the integration of digital technology and ecological wisdom, and can provide scientific evidence and decision-making support for food–ecological collaborative governance in China’s urban–rural transition zones. Aesthetic perception of rural streetscapes reflects individuals’ cognitive responses to their surroundings and is central to understanding how landscape preferences are formed. Existing studies using Scenic Beauty Estimation (SBE) are constrained by incomplete indicator systems and overreliance on linear approaches. This study proposes an interpretable machine learning framework that integrates multi-source data to examine the nonlinear influences of streetscape features on SBE. Using Sanguan Village, a water-networked settlement in Jiangsu, we developed a 24-indicator system spanning color, spatial, natural, artificial, and cultural dimensions. Based on 523 panoramic images and aesthetic ratings from 1175 respondents, we compared OLS, DT, MLP, SVR, RF, and XGBoost models. The best-performing XGBoost, combined with SHAP analysis, revealed threshold effects and interaction patterns among variables. Green visibility, architectural aesthetics, building visibility, sky visibility, environmental coordination, and water are the top six feature variables most strongly associated with rural streetscape aesthetic perception, and each exhibits threshold effects. The saturation threshold for green visibility is 0.153, and architectural aesthetics can only make a positive contribution when its score exceeds 3.815. The appropriate range for building visibility is below 0.452, while the optimal value for sky visibility is approximately 0.194. We also explored the context-dependence of these threshold effects across urban and rural settings. This study proposes streetscape optimization strategies focusing on screening key factors, controlling their thresholds, and coordinating the allocation of streetscape features. The interpretable analytical framework for rural scenic beauty established in this research can facilitate evidence-based landscape optimization and provide scientific support for sustainable rural development and tourism in this case. The global shift toward an aging population presents significant challenges for healthcare systems. This is compounded by rising disability rates, fragmented care models that struggle to meet complex needs, and a digital divide caused by the emergence of smart technologies. This work aims to evaluate how the digital divide affects the adoption, usability, and perceived benefits of smart home technologies designed to support activities of daily living and health monitoring. The influences of socioeconomic status and geographic location (urban versus rural) on the digital divide are considered. Four databases (Web of Science™, Scopus®, PubMed®, and IEEE Xplore®) were searched between 2014 and 2026, resulting in 71 studies that examined older adults, smart home technologies for daily living or health monitoring, and factors related to the digital divide. Findings were synthesized using the Technology Acceptance Model, Van Dijk’s Digital Divide Framework, and Health Behavior Models. Three key barriers were identified—economic, technical, and social—which disproportionately affected vulnerable groups. Smart Home Health Technologies (SH2Techs) present adoption challenges distinct from standalone devices because they require integrated infrastructure and sustained engagement. Limited research addressing the usability of non-clinical SH2Techs has identified the need for co-design, simplified interfaces, targeted training, and policy reforms to support equitable aging in place. Macroplastic pollution in rivers is an increasing environmental concern because rivers function simultaneously as active transport pathways and temporary storage compartments for land-based plastic waste. This study investigated the spatial distribution, composition, and size characteristics of riverbank and floating macroplastic debris in the Can Tho River, a tidal tributary of the Hau River in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, to improve understanding of macroplastic transport, selective retention, and environmental partitioning between active transport and temporary storage compartments. Riverbank debris was surveyed at twelve sites spanning urban, peri-urban, and rural sections, while floating debris was quantified using a net-based sampling system. Riverbank accumulations exhibited pronounced local spatial heterogeneity, although litter density and mass density did not differ significantly among river sections. Plastics dominated both environmental compartments, accounting for 53–60% of accumulated debris and more than 95% of floating debris by abundance. Riverbank accumulations were dominated by plastic bags, food packaging, and beverage containers, whereas floating debris was dominated by expanded polystyrene foam products. Significant differences were also observed in material composition, plastic-product composition, and size distribution. Riverbank accumulations contained proportionally larger macroplastics (100–500 mm), whereas floating debris was dominated by smaller macroplastics (50–200 mm), supporting the role of size-dependent transport and selective retention in environmental partitioning. These findings show that floating debris and riverbank accumulations represent complementary components of the riverine plastic continuum, linking active transport and temporary storage through selective environmental partitioning. Integrating floating and riverbank monitoring provides a more comprehensive framework for understanding macroplastic transport and environmental fate while informing management strategies to reduce downstream plastic transport to the Hau River and ultimately estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Health systems are fundamental to ensuring the right to health and maintaining the stability of welfare states. In this broad framework, this narrative review takes a look at Italy and China—two countries with very different historical backgrounds and institutional paths—as they deal with challenges like demographic aging, increasing chronic illnesses, and ongoing disparities in access to care. This paper aims to examine the most relevant peer-reviewed studies, as well as current legal and policy documents, in order to outline a comparative overview of the approaches to financing, coverage, and service provision in Italy and China, two very different countries. The Italian National Health Service, financed through general taxation and designed to be universal, aims to ensure equitable access to healthcare while having to contend with significant regional differences and financial difficulties. On the other hand, China, which operates with a mixed model, has rapidly expanded its insurance coverage using a variety of schemes and embracing technological advances, which has enabled large-scale access to healthcare, although considerable differences remain between urban and rural areas and provinces. When compared, each system shows particular strengths: Italy’s local care networks and focus on continuous services offer a model for inclusive welfare, while China’s use of digital tools demonstrates how innovation might help overcome obstacles in settings with limited resources and maintain continuity of care. There is a noticeable overlap in how both countries handle chronic diseases and their shared concern for equity in health policy. Considering these points, mixed approaches that combine universal coverage, financial viability, and flexible use of technology could provide useful ideas for crafting more fair, effective, and resilient health policies in various settings. Rather than proposing direct policy transfer, the comparison identifies context-dependent strategies that may inform future healthcare reforms. Full article

Land transport infrastructure (LTI) is a core component of sustainable transport systems, shaping mobility, efficiency, and the spatial distribution of development gains. Existing studies of urban–rural income inequality mainly focus on individual transport modes or aggregate infrastructure scale, with limited attention to transport-system composition and its contextual dependence. This study addresses this gap by conceptualizing LTI as a layered system and examining how its internal composition is associated with urban–rural income inequality across different levels of urbanization and economic development. Using a balanced panel of 286 prefecture-level cities from 2013 to 2023, the study constructs ratio-based indicators of compositional shifts within road systems, within rail systems, and between rail and road infrastructure. Two-way fixed-effects models incorporate interactions with urbanization and economic development. Conditional marginal-effect maps are then used to identify how these associations change across development contexts. The results reveal a clear stage-dependent pattern. Urbanization generally attenuates the inequality-widening association of mobility-oriented upgrading, whereas economic development influences whether such upgrading reinforces spatial polarization or supports wider diffusion. When urbanization and development are both sufficiently advanced, the marginal association may shift toward inequality reduction. At earlier stages, accessibility-oriented roads and conventional rail tend to show stronger equalizing associations. Mobility-oriented roads and high-speed rail are more likely to be associated with narrower inequality in more advanced settings. Mechanism-oriented analyses yield evidence consistent with two potential channels: the agricultural–non-agricultural labor-productivity gap and the non-agricultural employment share. The extended analyses and robustness checks broadly support the main findings. These findings indicate that transport infrastructure upgrading should be evaluated not only in terms of efficiency, but also according to whether the resulting infrastructure mix broadens access to opportunities, improves resource allocation, and supports inclusive regional development.
