For the airfoil in freestream, the pressure difference between the upper and lower surfaces and the variations in pressure gradients are significant at its leading edge area. Under reasonable deflections, the active leading edge can effectively change airfoil aerodynamic loads, which helps to improve the rotor aerodynamic performance. In this paper, a modeling method for an airfoil with an active leading edge was developed to calculate its aerodynamic loads. The pitch motion of the rotor blade and the leading edge deflections were taken into account. Firstly, simulations of steady and unsteady flow for the airfoil with an active leading edge were conducted under different boundary conditions and with different leading edge deflection movement. Secondly, the rational function approximation (RFA) was employed to establish the relationship between aerodynamic loads and airfoil/active leading edge deflections. Then, coefficient matrices of the RFA approach were identified based on a limited number of high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results. Finally, an aerodynamic model of the airfoil with an active leading edge was developed, and its accuracy was validated by comparing it to the high-fidelity CFD results. Comparative results reveal that the developed model can calculate the aerodynamic loads of an airfoil with an active leading edge accurately and efficiently when applied appropriately. The modeling method can be used in aerodynamic load calculations and the aeroelastic coupling analysis of a rotor with active control devices. Full article

Asymmetric double-suction centrifugal fans are commonly employed in home kitchens to remove cooking pollutants, and their performance is critical to maintaining a healthy indoor environment. However, inlet condition variations significantly influence the aerodynamic efficiency and noise levels. This study utilizes a combination of performance testing and a large eddy simulation to analyze the impact of different inlet conditions on the performance curve, impeller outlet pressure pulsation, unsteady flow structures, and sound quality of an asymmetric double-suction centrifugal fan. A non-uniform air distribution at the inlet is proposed to enhance the fan’s aerodynamic and noise characteristics. The findings reveal that when the inlet area is reduced to less than 70% of its fully open state, the aerodynamic performance declines with decreasing intake area. The amplitude of the superimposed blade-passing frequency is minimized when only the left inlet is open; the pressure coefficient’s fluctuation amplitude in the time domain reaches 0.4, with sharpness peaking at 3.1. In the optimized design, the maximum deviation in total pressure efficiency is limited to 1.96%, with loudness reduced by four sones and improved sharpness and roughness. These results provide valuable insights into the design and noise reduction of asymmetric double-suction squirrel-cage fans. Full article

In the present paper, a reduced-order modeling (ROM) approach based on a hybrid neural network is presented in order to calculate wing buffet pressure distributions due to structural eigenmode-based deformations. The accurate prediction of unsteady surface pressure distributions is crucial for assessing aeroelastic stability and preventing structural failure, but full-order simulations are computationally expensive; the proposed ROM provides a fast and efficient alternative with a sufficient level of accuracy. The hybrid ROM is defined by a series connection of a convolutional autoencoder (CNN-AE) and a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network. As a test case, the NASA Common Research Model (CRM) configuration for the transonic buffet condition is applied. Forced-motion computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are conducted in order to obtain the aerodynamic responses induced by the eigenmode-based deformations. For the unsteady simulations, the triangular adaptive upwind (TAU) solver of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is used. Based on a selected structural model, symmetric and asymmetric eigenmode-based deformations of the wing structure are implemented and considered for performance evaluation. Comparing the pressure loads modeled by the hybrid ROM and the reference full-order numerical solution, an overall good prediction performance is indicated with mean squared error (MSE) values mostly below 3%, reaching local maxima of about 12%, due to strong pressure gradients associated with pronounced shock oscillations. The unsteady interactions in rotating detonation turbine engines (RDTE) remain poorly understood. To address this, a 2D numerical model integrating a rotating detonation combustor (RDC) with a first-stage turbine is established to analyze flow structures and aerodynamics under various detonation modes. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) reveals intrinsic links between flow features and performance metrics. Results show that while the RDC generates total pressure gain, it induces significant unsteady flow. Guide vanes partially suppress pressure fluctuations but cannot eliminate total pressure losses or circumferential non-uniformity, reducing rotor efficiency. Increasing detonation wave numbers decreases total pressure gain at rotor inlet but improves flow uniformity: the counterclockwise double-wave mode exhibits optimal performance (27.9% work gain, 5.0% instability, 86.4% efficiency), whereas the clockwise single-wave mode shows the poorest (20.9% work gain, 11.8% instability, 84.0% efficiency). POD analysis indicates first-order modes represent time-averaged flow characteristics, while low-order modes capture non-uniform pressure distributions and pairing phenomena, reconstructing wave propagation. The study highlights discrepancies between turbine inlet’s actual unsteady flow and conventional quasi-steady design assumptions, proposing enhancing mean flow characteristics and increasing first-mode energy proportion to improve work extraction. These findings clarify the detonation wave mode–turbine performance correlation, offering insights for RDTE engineering applications. Full article

A numerical investigation of the roll motion characteristics of the Basic Finner Model was performed. The study of roll motion is essential in the design and performance evaluation of aerospace vehicles, particularly for stability and maneuverability purposes. The numerical investigation was conducted employing the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) solver coupled with k-ε realizable turbulence model. The simulations were performed for a range of Mach numbers and angles of attack to assess the influence of these parameters on the model’s roll motion characteristics. The CFD procedure was validated based on an experimental database from previous work and the literature. The influence of roll motion on aerodynamic forces and moments at different flow conditions were analyzed to obtain a better understanding of the physics. The variation of forces and moments with roll angle, Mach number, and angle of attack, as well as the pressure distribution at different flow conditions, are discussed, also covering aerodynamic interactions between the fins and body. This numerical investigation contributes to understanding the aerodynamic behavior of the Basic Finner Model during roll motion. The findings are valuable for the design and optimization of aerospace vehicles, aiding in the development of more efficient and stable configurations. Future research can be based upon these results to explore additional factors that may impact roll motion characteristics and can further refine the design and performance evaluation processes for aerospace vehicles. The steady-state aerodynamics and the aeroelastic response have been analyzed in an oscillating linear transonic cascade at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The investigated operating points (Π=1.29 and 1.25) represent an open-source virtual compressor (VINK) operating at a part speed line. At these conditions, a shock-induced separation mechanism is present on the suction side. In the cascade, the central blade vibrates in its first natural modeshape with a 0.69 reduced frequency, and the reference measurement span is 85%. The numerical results are computed from the commercial software Ansys CFX with an SST turbulence model, including a reattachment modification (RM). Steady-state results consist of a Laser-2-Focus anemometer (L2F), pressure taps, and flow visualization. Steady-state numerical results indicate good agreement with experimental data, including the reattachment line length, at both operating points, while discrepancies are observed at low-momentum regions within the passage. Experimental unsteady pressure coefficients at the oscillating blade display a fast amplitude decrease downstream, while numerical results overpredict the amplitude response. Numerical results indicate that, at the measurement plane, for both operating points, the harmonic amplitude is dominated by the shock location. At midspan, there is an interaction between the shock and the separation onset, where large pressure gradients are located. Experimental and numerical responses at blades adjacent to the oscillating blade are in good agreement at both operating points. Full article

This paper investigates the aeroelastic behaviour of a full wind turbine model with realistic blade vibration amplitude (9% span) using a nonlinear frequency-domain solution method. The primary objective is to demonstrate the computational efficiency of this method for an aeroelastic analysis compared to resource-intensive time-domain approaches. The underlying CFD model was validated against experimental data and benchmark simulations. The frequency-domain method was then validated against a conventional time-domain method, comparing aerodynamic damping and unsteady pressure distributions, with strong agreement observed. Results show a more complex unsteady pressure distribution at 324.5 RPM compared to 424.5 RPM, directly affecting aerodynamic damping. While aeroelastic stability was observed at both speeds, aerodynamic damping was significantly lower at 324.5 RPM. Flow field analysis reveals a clear relationship between relative velocity, static pressure, and blade vibration. Critically, the frequency-domain method achieved comparable accuracy to the time-domain method but with a significantly reduced computational cost (9 h versus 120 h), making it highly attractive for routine aeroelastic analyses and design optimisation. This paper investigates the flutter characteristics of composite laminates in hypersonic yawed flow using numerical simulations. The governing equations are derived based on Hamilton’s principle and were discretized using the assumed mode method. The unsteady aerodynamic force is calculated by using the piston theory, including the influence of the yaw angle. Several laminate models are designed to study the effects of the stacking sequence, thickness ratio, and fiber orientation on the critical dynamic pressure and the amplitude of the limit cycle oscillation. Numerical results show that positioning the material with higher stiffness on the upper layer can lead to a higher critical dynamic pressure and a smaller amplitude of the limit cycle oscillation. In the case of large yaw angles, increasing the thickness of the material with larger stiffness can clearly suppress the amplitude of the limit cycle oscillation. Fiber orientation symmetry to the x-axis can improve the flight stability with the change in the yaw angle. Full article

Aviation accounts for a significant share of global CO2 emissions, necessitating efficient propulsion technologies to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Geared turbofan architectures offer a promising solution by enabling higher bypass ratios and improved fuel efficiency. However, geared turbofans introduce significant aerodynamic and structural challenges, particularly in the low-pressure turbine. Current understanding of high-speed low-pressure turbine behavior under engine-representative conditions is limited, especially regarding unsteady wake interactions, secondary flows, and compressibility effects. To address these gaps, this work presents a novel test case of high-speed low-pressure turbines, the SPLEEN C1. The test case and experimental methodology are depicted. The study includes the commissioning and characterization of a transonic low-density linear cascade capable of testing quasi-3D flows. The rig’s operational stability, periodicity, and inlet flow characterization are assessed in terms of loss and turbulence quantities to ensure an accurate representation of engine conditions. These findings provide a validated experimental platform for studying complex flow interactions in high-speed low-pressure turbines, supporting future turbine design and efficiency advancements. This work studies the influence of a growing boundary layer on the process of supersonic flow around an aerodynamic body. The task is to select and implement in an experiment the parameters of a supersonic flow and to study the flow pattern near the surface of an aerodynamic body at different viscosity values for the incoming flow. Visualization of the shock wave configuration in front of the body and studying the change in the pressure field in the flow region under these conditions is the main goal of this work. The experiment was carried out on an experimental stand created on the basis of a shock tube. The aerodynamic body under study (a semi-cylinder pointed along a circle or an ellipse) was placed in a supersonic nozzle. The model was clamped by lateral transparent walls, which were simultaneously a source of boundary layer growth and the viewing windows for visualizing the flow. For selected modes with Reynolds numbers from 8200 to 45,000, schlieren flow patterns and pressure distribution fields near the surface of the streamlined models and the plate of the growing boundary layer were obtained. The data show a complex, unsteady flow pattern realized near the model which was caused by the viscous-inviscid interaction of the boundary layer with the bow shock wave near the wall. Full article

The aerodynamic performance of transonic compressors, particularly the stall margin, is significantly influenced by inlet distortion. While time-marching methods accurately simulate such unsteady flows, they can be time-consuming. To enhance the computational efficiency, two Fourier-based methods are proposed in this paper: the time-accurate method with interface filtering and the time–space collocation (TSC) method. The time-accurate method with interface filtering ignores the rotor–stator interaction effects, enabling a larger time step and faster convergence. In contrast, the TSC method accounts for harmonics of conservative variables and transforms the unsteady simulation into multiple steady-state calculations, thereby reducing computational costs. The two Fourier-based methods are validated using NASA Stage 67 and a two-stage transonic fan. Near the peak efficiency point, the results from both methods closely match that of URANS simulation and experimental data. The time-accurate method with interface filtering demonstrates a speed enhancement of 4 to 5 times as a result of a reduction in the iteration steps. In contrast, the TSC method exhibits a speed improvement of at least 20 times in two specific cases, attributable to the significantly smaller mesh size and iteration steps employed in the TSC method compared to the URANS method. Near the stall point, more harmonics for inlet distortion are necessary in TSC simulation to accurately capture flow separation. In the two-stage transonic fan simulations, the strong rotor–stator interaction effects lead to deviations from the URANS simulation; nevertheless, the Fourier-based simulations accurately reflect the trend of the stall margin under total pressure distortion. Overall, the Fourier-based methods show promising potential for engineering applications in estimating the performance degradation of compressors subjected to inlet distortion. Full article

Shock wave boundary/layer interactions (SWBLIs) are critical in high-speed aerodynamic flows, particularly within supersonic regimes, where unsteady dynamics can induce structural fatigue and degrade vehicle performance. Conventional measurement techniques, such as pressure-sensitive paint (PSP), face limitations in frequency response, calibration complexity, and intrusive instrumentation. Similarly, MEMS-based sensors, like Kulite® sensors, present challenges in terms of intrusiveness, cost, and integration complexity. This study presents a flexible, lightweight polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric sensor array designed for high-resolution wall-pressure measurements in SWBLI research. The primary objective is to optimize low-frequency pressure fluctuation detection, addressing SWBLI’s need for accurate, real-time measurements of low-frequency unsteadiness. Fabricated using a double-sided screen-printing technique, this sensor array is low-cost, flexible, and provides stable, high-sensitivity data. Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations indicate that the sensor structure also has potential for high-frequency responses, behaving as a high-pass filter with minimal signal attenuation up to 300 kHz, although the current study’s experimental testing is focused on low-frequency calibration and validation. A custom low-frequency sound pressure setup was used to calibrate the PVDF sensor array, ensuring uniform pressure distribution across sensor elements. Wind tunnel tests at Mach 2 verified the PVDF sensor’s ability to capture pressure fluctuations and unsteady behaviors consistent with those recorded by Kulite sensors. The findings suggest that PVDF sensors are promising alternatives for capturing low-frequency disturbances and intricate flow structures in advanced aerodynamic research, with high-frequency performance to be further explored in future work. Recent advancements in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) enable new and more complex analysis methods to be developed for early design stages. One such method is the isolated unsteady diffuser model, which seeks to reduce the computational cost of unsteady CFD when modeling diffusion systems in centrifugal compressors with vaned diffusers by isolating the diffuser from the computational domain and prescribing an unsteady and periodic inlet boundary condition. An initial iteration of this computational methodology was developed and validated for the Centrifugal Stage for Aerodynamic Research (CSTAR) at the High-Speed Compressor Laboratory at Purdue University. However, that work showed discrepancies in flow structure predictions between full-stage and isolated unsteady CFD models, and it also presented a narrow scope of only a single loading condition. Thus, this work addresses the need for improvement in the modeling fidelity. The original methodology was expanded by including a more accurate, non-uniform definition of turbulence at the diffuser inlet and modeling several loading conditions ranging from choke to surge. Results from isolated unsteady diffuser models with non-uniform turbulence modeling were compared with uniform turbulence isolated unsteady diffuser models and full-stage unsteady models at four loading conditions along a speedline. Flow structure predictions by the three methodologies were compared using 1D parameters and outlet total pressure and midspan velocity contours. The comparisons indicate a significant improvement in 1D parameter and flow structure predictions by the isolated unsteady diffuser models at all four loading conditions when including more accurate non-uniform turbulence, without a corresponding increase in computational cost. Additionally, both isolated diffuser methodologies accurately track trends in 3D flow structures along the speedline. Full article

A passive flow control technique in the form of microfiber coatings with a diverging pillar cross-section area was applied to the wing suction surface of a small tailless unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The coatings are inspired from ‘gecko feet’ surfaces, and their impact on steady and unsteady aerodynamics is assessed through wind tunnel testing. Angles of attack from −2° to 17° were used for static experiments, and for some cases, the elevon control surface was deflected to study its effectiveness. In forced oscillation, various combinations of mean angle of attack, frequency and amplitude were explored. The aerodynamic coefficients were calculated from load cell measurements for experimental variables such as microfiber size, the region of the wing coated with microfibers, Reynolds number and angle of attack. Microfibers with a 140 µm pillar height reduce drag by a maximum of 24.7% in a high-lift condition and cruise regime, while 70 µm microfibers work best in the stall flow regime, reducing the drag by 24.2% for the same high-lift condition. Elevon deflection experiments showed that pitch moment authority is significantly improved near stall when microfibers cover the control surface and upstream, with an increase in CM magnitude of up to 22.4%. Dynamic experiments showed that microfibers marginally increase dynamic damping in pitch, improving load factor production in response to control surface actuation at low angles of attack, but reducing it at higher angles. In general, the microfiber pillars are within the laminar boundary layer, and they create a periodic slip condition on the top surface of the pillars, which increases the near-wall momentum over the wing surface. This mechanism is particularly effective in mitigating flow separation at high angles of attack, reducing pressure drag and restoring pitching moment authority provided by control surfaces. Understanding the aerodynamic performance of scaled-down models is vital for providing crucial insights into wind energy optimization. In this study, the aerodynamic performance of a scaled-down model (12%) was investigated. This validates the findings of the unsteady aerodynamic experiment (UAE) test sequence H. UAE tests provide information on the configuration and conditions of wind tunnel testing to measure the pressure coefficient distribution on the blade surface and the aerodynamic performance of the wind turbine. The computational simulations used shear stress transport and kinetic energy (SST K-Omega) and transitional shear stress transport (SST) turbulence models, with wind speeds ranging from 5 m/s to 25 m/s for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI and 4 m/s to 14 m/s for the 12% scaled-down model. The aerodynamic performance of both cases was assessed at representative wind speeds of 7 m/s for low, 10 m/s for medium, and 20 m/s for high flow speeds for NREL Phase VI and 7 m/s for low, 9 m/s medium, and 12 m/s for the scaled-down model. The results of the SST K-Omega and transitional SST models were aligned with experimental test measurement data at low wind speeds. However, the SST K-Omega torque values exhibited a slight deviation. The transitional SST and SST K-Omega models yielded aerodynamic properties that were comparable to those of the 12% scaled-down model. The torque values obtained from the simulation for the full-scale NREL Phase VI and the scaled-down model were 1686.5 Nm and 0.8349 Nm, respectively. Both turbulence models reliably predicted torque and pressure coefficient values that were consistent with the experimental data, considering specific flow regimes. The pressure coefficient was maximum at the leading edge of the wind turbine blade on the windward side and minimum on the leeward side. For the 12% scaled-down model, the flow simulation results bordering the low-pressure region of the blade varied slightly. Full article
