Motor Neuron Diseases (MNDs) such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS), Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress Type 1 (SMARD1), Multisystem Proteinopathy (MSP), Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy (SBMA), and ALS associated to Frontotemporal Dementia (ALS-FTD), have traditionally been studied as distinct entities, each one with unique genetic and clinical characteristics. However, emerging research reveals that these seemingly disparate conditions converge on shared molecular mechanisms that drive progressive neuroaxonal degeneration. This narrative review addresses a critical gap in the field by synthesizing the most recent findings into a comprehensive, cross-disease mechanisms framework. By integrating insights into RNA dysregulation, protein misfolding, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA damage, kinase signaling, axonal transport failure, and immune activation, we highlight how these converging pathways create a common pathogenic landscape across MNDs. Importantly, this perspective not only reframes MNDs as interconnected neurodegenerative models but also identifies shared therapeutic targets and emerging strategies, including antisense oligonucleotides, autophagy modulators, kinase inhibitors, and immunotherapies that transcend individual disease boundaries. The diagnostic and prognostic potential of Neurofilament Light Chain (NfL) biomarkers is also emphasized. By shifting focus from gene-specific to mechanism-based approaches, this paper offers a much-needed roadmap for advancing both research and clinical management in MNDs, paving the way for cross-disease therapeutic innovations. Society’s adaptation to shared mobility services is a growing topic that requires detailed understanding of the local circumstances of potential and current users. This paper focuses on analyzing barriers to the adoption of urban bike-sharing systems in post-industrial cities, using a case study of the Silesian agglomeration in Poland. Methodologically, the article integrates quantitative survey methods with multivariate statistical analysis to analyze the demographic, socioeconomic, and motivational factors that underline the adoption of shared micromobility. The study highlights a detailed segmentation of users by income, age, professional status, and gender, as well as the observation of profound disparities in access and perceived usefulness. Of note is the study’s identification of a highly concentrated segment of young, low-income users (mostly students), which largely accounts for the general perception of economic and infrastructural barriers. These include the use of factor analysis and regression to plot the interaction patterns between individual user characteristics and certain system-level constraints, such as cost, infrastructure coverage, weather, and health. The study’s findings prioritize problem-specific interventions in urban mobility planning: bridging equity gaps between user groups. This research contributes to the current literature by providing detailed insights into the heterogeneity of user mobility behavior, offering evidence-based recommendations for inclusive and adaptive options for shared transportation infrastructure in a changing urban context. This study systematically investigated the corrosion evolution and protective mechanisms of X80 pipeline steel in Xinjiang’s saline soil environments under freeze–thaw cycling conditions. Combining regional soil characterization with laboratory-constructed corrosion systems, we employed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, and surface analytical techniques to quantify temporal–spatial corrosion behavior across 30 freeze–thaw cycles. Experimental results revealed a distinctive corrosion resistance pattern: initial improvement (cycles 1–10) attributed to protective oxide layer formation, followed by accelerated degradation (cycles 10–30) due to microcrack propagation and chloride accumulation. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction analyses identified sulfate–chloride ion synergism as the primary driver of localized corrosion disparities in heterogeneous soil matrices. A comparative evaluation of asphalt-coated specimens demonstrated a 62%–89% corrosion rate reduction, with effectiveness directly correlating with coating integrity and thickness (200–500 μm range). Molecular dynamics simulations using Materials Studio revealed atomic-scale ion transport dynamics at coating–substrate interfaces, showing preferential Cl permeation through coating defects. These multiscale findings establish quantitative relationships between environmental stressors, coating parameters, and corrosion kinetics, providing a mechanistic framework for optimizing protective coatings in cold-region pipeline applications. “I Shouldn’t Have to Drive to the Suburbs”: Grocery Store Access, Transportation, and Food Security in Detroit During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Objective: To explore the relationship between type of grocery store used (chain vs. independent), transportation access, food insecurity, and fruit and vegetable intake in Detroit, Michigan, USA, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from December 2021 to May 2022. Setting: Detroit, Michigan. Participants: 656 Detroit residents aged 18 and older. Results: Bivariate analyses showed that chain grocery store shoppers reported significantly greater fruit and vegetable intake (2.42 vs. 2.14 times/day for independent grocery store shoppers, p < 0.001) and lower rates of food insecurity compared to independent store shoppers (45.9% vs. 65.3% for independent grocery store shoppers, p < 0.001). Fewer independent store shoppers used their own vehicle (52.9% vs. 76.2% for chain store shoppers, p < 0.001). After adjusting for socioeconomic and demographic variables transportation access was strongly associated with increased odds of shopping at chain stores (OR = 1.89, 95% CI [1.21,2.95], p = 0.005) but food insecurity was no longer associated with grocery store type. Shopping at chain grocery stores was associated with higher fruit and vegetable intake after adjusting for covariates (1.18 times more per day, p = 0.042). Qualitative responses highlighted systemic barriers, including poor food quality, high costs, and limited transportation options, exacerbating food access inequities. Conclusions: These disparities underscore the need for targeted interventions to improve transportation options and support food security in vulnerable populations, particularly in urban areas like Detroit. Addressing these structural challenges is essential for reducing food insecurity and promoting equitable access to nutritious foods. Full article

Spatiotemporal Trends and Exceedance Drivers of Ozone Concentration in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration, China

The Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, characterized by high population density, an advanced transportation system, and a concentration of industrial activity, is one of the regions severely affected by O3 pollution in central and eastern China. Using data collected from 251 monitoring stations between 2015 and 2025, this paper analyzed the spatio-temporal variation of 8 h O3 concentrations and instances of exceedance. On the basis of exploring the influence of meteorological factors on regional 8 h O3 concentration, the potential source contribution areas of pollutants under the exceedance condition were investigated using the HYSPLIT model. The results indicate a rapid increase in the 8 h O3 concentration at a rate of 0.91 ± 0.98 μg·m−3·a−1, with the average number of days exceeding concentration standards reaching 41.05 in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration. Spatially, the 8 h O3 concentrations were higher in coastal areas and lower in inland regions, as well as elevated in plains compared to hilly terrains. This distribution was significantly distinct from the concentration growth trend characterized by higher levels in the northwest and lower levels in the southeast. Furthermore, it diverged from the spatial characteristics where exceedances primarily occurred in the heavily industrialized northeastern region and the lightly industrialized central region, indicating that the growth and exceedance of 8 h O3 concentrations were influenced by disparate factors. Local human activities have intensified the emissions of ozone precursor substances, which could be the key driving factor for the significant increase in regional 8 h O3 concentrations. In the context of high temperatures and low humidity, this has contributed to elevated levels of 8 h O3 concentrations. When wind speeds were below 2.5 m·s−1, the proportion of 8 h O3 concentrations exceeding the standards was nearly 0 under almost calm wind conditions, and it showed an increasing trend with rising wind speeds, indicating that the potential precursor sources that caused high O3 concentrations originated occasionally from inland regions, with very limited presence within the study area. This observation implies that the main cause of exceedances was the transport effect of pollution from outside the region. Therefore, it is recommended that the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration adopt economic and technological compensation mechanisms within and between regions to reduce the emission intensity of precursor substances in potential source areas, thereby effectively controlling O3 concentrations and improving public living conditions and quality of life. The establishment and management of nature reserves play a crucial role in protecting biodiversity and supporting sustainable agriculture. This study focuses on 2538 nature reserves in 22 provinces, 5 autonomous regions and 4 municipalities directly under the central government in mainland China. Integrating GIS spatial statistics, imbalance index, and geodetector models, we reveal critical insights: (1) Pronounced spatial inequity is observed, where a small number of eastern provinces dominate the total reserve count, highlighting significant regional disparities in ecological resource allocation. The sparse kernel density in western regions, indicating sparse reserve coverage. The Standard Deviation Ellipse highlights directional dispersion and human-ecological conflicts in high-density zones. (2) Key sustainability indicators driving reserve distribution include: total water resources, water resources per capita, forest area. (3) The spatial distribution of China’s nature reserves, along with factors such as altitude, river distribution, and transportation infrastructure, plays a crucial role in their development. This research provides theoretical support for the scientific planning and policy-making of nature reserves in China and offers practical guidance for optimizing and adjusting sustainable agricultural development. The study emphasizes the vital functions of nature reserves in maintaining ecosystem balance, enhancing regional climate resilience, and serving as biodiversity reservoirs. This research offers strategic insights for integrating nature reserve spatial planning with sustainable agricultural development policies, providing a scientific basis for optimizing the eco-agricultural interface in China. Transportation infrastructure is a fundamental driver of economic growth and regional connectivity; and the supply of this infrastructure is often assumed to reduce spatial disparities. This study investigates the impact of transportation accessibility on regional disparities in land prices across South Korea from 2010 to 2019. Using spatial econometric models and geographically weighted regression (GWR), this study evaluates how variations in transportation networks influence land price differentials between regions. The results confirm that transportation accessibility positively affects land prices; but GWR coefficients reveal substantial regional variations in the extent to which accessibility improvements drive land price growth. Furthermore, while the overall distribution of transportation accessibility remained relatively stable, its influence on land price appreciation varied significantly, contributing to a widening gap in land values between regions. These findings underscore the critical role of transportation infrastructure in shaping regional inequalities and highlight the need for more equitable transportation policies to mitigate spatial disparities and promote balanced regional development Full article

This study explores the spatial and social implications of urban food systems in Quito, Ecuador, focusing on how food access inequalities reflect and reinforce broader urban disparities. The research addresses a critical problem in contemporary urbanization: the disconnection between food provisioning and spatial equity in rapidly growing cities. The objective is to assess and map disparities in food accessibility using a mixed-methods approach that includes field observation, participatory mapping, value chain analysis, and statistical modeling. Five traditional and emerging food markets were studied in diverse districts across the city. A synthetic accessibility function F(x) was constructed to model food access levels, integrating variables such as income, infrastructure, transport availability, and travel time. These variables were subjected to Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering to generate three typologies of territorial vulnerability. The results reveal that peripheral areas exhibit lower F(x) values and weaker integration with the formal food system, leading to higher consumer costs and limited fresh food options. In contrast, central districts benefit from multimodal infrastructure and greater diversity of supply. This study concludes that food systems should be treated as critical urban infrastructure. Integrating food equity into land use and mobility planning is essential to promote inclusive, sustainable, and resilient urban development. Full article

Electric vehicles (EVs) have been the most dependable and feasible choice for decarbonizing road transport over the last decade. To ensure the advancement of EVs and establish them as a sustainable alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, the EV sector and technological growth have largely relied on government subsidies. A significant challenge for EVs is their faster depreciation compared to ICE vehicles, primarily owing to swift technological advancements that propel the market while simultaneously rendering older EV models outdated too soon. Another factor that leads to the quicker depreciation of EVs is subsidies. The anticipated cessation of subsidies is expected to provide the required leverage to mitigate the rapid value decline in EVs, given the larger price disparity between new and used EVs. Batteries, which enable EVs to be a viable option, significantly contribute to the depreciation of EVs. In addition to the potential decline in EV battery performance, advancements in technology and reduced prices provide newer models with improved range at a more affordable cost. The used EV market accurately represents the rapid devaluation of EVs; consequently, the two topics are tightly related. Though it might not be immediately apparent, it seems evident that the pace of depreciation of EVs significantly contributes to the small size of the second-hand EV market. Depreciation is a key factor influencing the used EV market. This manuscript outlines the key aspects of depreciation and sustainability in the EV transition, especially those linked to rapid technological advancements, such as batteries, in addition to subsidies and the used EV market. The objective of this manuscript is to expose and analyze the relation between the drivers of the second-hand EV market, such as the cost of ownership, technology, and subsidies, and, on the other hand, present the interplay perspectives and challenges. This article examines the impact of everyday life infrastructure on well-being through the lens of feminist economics, with a specific focus on gender disparities within the European context. Combining the capability approach (CA) and subjective well-being (SWB) theory, this study introduces a gender-sensitive well-being budget indicator, the Well-being and Infrastructure by Gender Index, or just WIGI, to assess the differential impacts of public expenditures on women and men. Drawing on feminist critiques of infrastructure planning, it highlights how gendered patterns of access and use shape experiences of well-being. The literature review synthesizes recent contributions on well-being measurement, gendered capabilities, and the role of public infrastructure in supporting everyday life. The research utilizes the Benefits of Gender Equality through infrastructure Provision (BGGEIP) survey from the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) from 28 EU member states in 2015 to evaluate the contribution of key public services—such as transport, childcare, and healthcare—to individual capabilities and subjective well-being outcomes. The findings underscore the importance of integrating gender-sensitive methodologies into infrastructure planning and public policy to promote social inclusion and equitable well-being outcomes. This article concludes by advocating for feminist economics-informed policies to enhance the responsiveness of public investments to the lived experiences of women and men across Europe. Full article

Background/Objectives: Climate change is a major factor exacerbating non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, neoplasms, respiratory diseases, and diabetes, especially in vulnerable Latin American regions. This study analyzes the impact of environmental exposures related to climate change on the NCD burden in eight Latin American countries by quantifying the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to these factors. Using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data (1990–2021), we performed multiple linear regression to assess associations between DALYs and environmental risk factors—air pollution (particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide), radon, lead, and extreme temperatures—in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay. The study included major NCDs, and the population was stratified by age and sex. Results: Ischemic heart disease was the leading cause of DALYs in most countries. Particulate matter pollution was the main environmental risk factor contributing to the NCD burden, mainly affecting cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Mexico showed the highest DALYs from particulate and ozone pollution; temperature and lead exposure also contributed in some countries. Nitrogen dioxide was the primary risk factor for asthma. Statistically significant relationships between environmental factors and DALYs were confirmed. Conclusions: Climate change-related exposures significantly increase the burden of NCDs in Latin America. Targeted interventions in industry, transportation, and energy, along with sustainable urban policies, are essential to mitigate health impacts and reduce disparities. Integrating environmental health into public policies can improve health outcomes amid ongoing climate challenges. Full article

Radiotherapy, a critical component of cancer treatment, faces significant challenges in Gauteng, South Africa. These disparities hinder the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3, primarily due to systemic issues, socioeconomic barriers, and limitations within the health system. This article presents the House framework, designed to enhance access to radiotherapy services by integrating the WHO Health Systems framework with the dimensions of access proposed by Penchansky and Thomas. The framework is visually represented as a house, with Policy & Governance as the foundation, WHO building blocks as pillars, and Equitable Cancer Care and Improved Outcomes as the roof. A mixed-methods approach was utilized, combining quantitative data from radiotherapy facilities and qualitative insights from healthcare professionals to identify barriers and potential solutions. Findings indicate significant disparities in resource distribution and accessibility between public and private institutions, compounded by socioeconomic factors like transport costs and lack of awareness. Green Transportation-Enabled High-Quality Economic Development in the Yangtze River Economic Belt: Regional Disparities and Dynamic Characteristics

The Yangtze River Economic Belt (YEB), serving as a pivotal transportation corridor connecting eastern and western China and a national strategic development hub, plays a central role in driving high-quality economic development (HQAED) across the country. Based on the new development paradigm with emphasis on green transformation and transportation integration, this study proposes a comprehensive evaluation framework for an HQAED index (HQAED) across five core dimensions. Employing the entropy-weighted CRITIC method to quantify provincial HQAED values, combined with Dagum–Gini coefficient analysis to examine regional inequality patterns and determinants, and complemented by kernel density estimation (KDE) for temporal dynamics analysis, this research reveals four key findings: (1) There are significant disparities in HQEDI levels across the YEB, with a clear east–west gradient: the lower reaches > middle reaches > upper reaches. (2) While the dimensions of green development and shared development have shown steady growth despite initial disadvantages, the openness dimension faces structural challenges that require particular attention. (3) The overall Gini coefficient fluctuates between 0.068 and 0.094, indicating moderate regional disparities with relatively limited inequality. (4) The rightward shift in the HQEDI kernel density curves confirms overall progress, but also highlights widening disparities in the upstream regions and growth stagnation in the midstream areas. Practically, the entropy–CRITIC fusion methodology offers a transferable framework for emerging economies measuring sustainability-transition progress, while the quantified “green transportation empowerment” effects provide actionable levers for policymakers to optimize ecological compensation mechanisms and cross-regional infrastructure investments. Mobility is a fundamental catalyst for urban transformation, particularly in smaller urban centres, where enhanced transport can significantly influence socio-economic dynamics. This study investigates the socio-economic and spatial developments associated with the fixed-link transport corridor connecting the Zealand and Funen islands in Denmark. Despite its importance, a gap remains in understanding how this transport corridor has reshaped inter-regional connectivity over three decades and affected urban development in the surrounding areas. To address this gap, the study analyses the socio-economic effects of improved connectivity, focusing on residential relocation trends, commuting patterns, housing market dynamics, and employment in smaller communities. Adopting a mixed-methods approach that integrates surveys with spatial modelling, the analysis examines changes in commuting habits, economic opportunities, and land use from 1990 to 2018 within a 45 min travel radius of the corridor. The findings reveal that enhanced accessibility has widened commuting ranges, stimulated urban growth, and transformed housing and labour markets. However, these advantages are not evenly distributed, highlighting emerging spatial disparities. By merging empirical data with predictive models, this study enriches the discourse on sustainable urban mobility and spatial equity, providing valuable insights for policymakers and planners as they contemplate future fixed-link transport connectivity aimed at fostering inclusive regional development. This study investigates the context in which the adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) takes place in Italy. Several region-specific characteristics pertaining to socioeconomic conditions, transportation, and infrastructure are studied and combined by means of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and k-means clustering. The model acts as a tool able to provide a 3D visualization of the relative states of the 20 regions analyzed. Three Principal Components are computed, and seven clusters are identified and described, with Lombardy, Trentino-South Tyrol, Aosta Valley, and Lazio showing an advanced level of adoption compared to the rest of Italy. Key findings indicate that regional incentives are necessary to accelerate adoption in underperforming regions, and that incentives targeting the scrapping of old vehicles might not always be useful. To address the emerging disparities, recommendations tailored to the individual territories are provided. Full article
