Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are a critical aspect of intelligent transportation systems, improving safety and comfort for drivers. These networks enhance the driving experience by offering timely information vital for safety and comfort. Yet, VANETs come with their own set of challenges concerning security, privacy, and design reliability. Traditionally, vehicle authentication occurs every time a vehicle enters the domain of the roadside unit (RSU). In our study, we suggest that authentication should take place only when a vehicle has not covered a set distance, increasing system efficiency. The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has seen an upsurge in the use of IoT devices across various fields, including smart cities, healthcare, and vehicular IoT. These devices, while gathering environmental data and networking, often face reliability issues without a trusted intermediary. Our study delves deep into implementing Teegraph in VANETs to enhance authentication. Given the integral role of VANETs in Intelligent Transportation Systems and their inherent challenges, we turn to Hashgraph—an alternative to blockchain. Hashgraph offers a decentralized, secure, and trustworthy database. We introduce an efficient authentication system, which triggers only when a vehicle has not traversed a set distance, optimizing system efficiency. Moreover, we shed light on the indispensable role Hashgraph can occupy in the rapidly expanding IoT landscape. Lastly, we present Teegraph, a novel Hashgraph-based technology, as a superior alternative to blockchain, ensuring a streamlined, scalable authentication solution. Our approach leverages the logical key hierarchy (LKH) and packet update keys to ensure data privacy and integrity in vehicular networks. Full article

Autonomous vehicles and intelligent traffic transportation are widely investigated for road networks. Context-aware traffic light scheduling algorithms determine signal phases by analyzing the real-time characteristics and contextual information of competing traffic flows. The context of traffic flows mainly considers the existence of regular, emergency, or heavy vehicles. This is an important factor in setting the phases of the traffic light schedule and assigning a high priority for emergency vehicles to pass through the signalized intersection first. VANET technology, through its communication capabilities and the exchange of data packets among moving vehicles, is utilized to collect real-time traffic information for the analyzed road scenarios. This introduces an attractive environment for hackers, intruders, and criminals to deceive drivers and intelligent infrastructure by manipulating the transmitted packets. This consequently leads to the deployment of less efficient traffic light scheduling algorithms. Therefore, ensuring secure communications between traveling vehicles and verifying the integrity of transmitted data are crucial. In this work, we investigate the possible attacks on the integrity of transferred messages and vehicles’ identities and their effects on the traffic light schedules. Then, a new secure context-aware traffic light scheduling system is proposed that guarantees the integrity of transmitted messages and verifies the vehicles’ identities. Finally, a comprehensive series of experiments were performed to assess the proposed secure system in comparison to the absence of security mechanisms within a simulated road intersection. We can infer from the experimental study that attacks on the integrity of vehicles have different effects on the efficiency of the scheduling algorithm. The throughput of the signalized intersection and the waiting delay time of traveling vehicles are highly affected parameters. Full article

Heavy metal pollution, particularly copper contamination, threatens the ecological environment and human survival. In response to this pressing environmental issue, the development of innovative remediation strategies has become imperative. Bioremediation technology is characterized by remarkable advantages, including its ecological friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and operational efficiency. In our previous research, Rossellomorea sp. ZC255 demonstrated substantial potential for environmental bioremediation applications. This study investigated the removal characteristics and underlying mechanism of strain ZC255 and revealed that the maximum removal capacity was 253.4 mg/g biomass under the optimal conditions (pH 7.0, 28 °C, and 2% inoculum). The assessment of the biosorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, while the adsorption isotherm may fit well with both the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Cell surface alterations on the Cu(II)-treated biomass were observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cu(II) binding functional groups were determined via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Simultaneously, the genomic analysis of strain ZC255 identified multiple genes potentially involved in heavy metal resistance, transport, and metabolic processes. These studies highlight the significance of strain ZC255 in the context of environmental heavy metal bioremediation research and provide a basis for using strain ZC255 as a copper removal biosorbent. Electric bikes (e-bikes) offer a low-carbon, space-efficient solution for campus mobility, yet their sustainable potential is increasingly challenged by patterns of non-compliant use, including speeding, informal parking, and unauthorized charging. This study integrates the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to examine the cognitive and contextual factors that shape such behaviors among university students. Drawing on a survey of 408 e-bike users and structural equation modeling, the results show that non-compliance is primarily driven by perceived usefulness, ease of action, and behavioral feasibility, with affective and normative factors playing indirect, reinforcing roles. Importantly, actual behavior is influenced not only by intention but also by students’ perceived capacity to act within low-enforcement environments. These findings highlight the need to align behavioral perceptions with sustainability goals. The study contributes to sustainable mobility governance by clarifying key psychological pathways and offering targeted insights for designing perception-sensitive interventions in campus transport systems. Furthermore, by promoting compliance-oriented campus mobility, this research highlights a pathway toward enhancing the resilience of transport systems through behavioral adaptation within semi-regulated environments. While the Ankom RF system facilitates efficient high-throughput in vitro fermentation studies, its high cost and limited flexibility constrain its broader applicability. To address these limitations, we developed and validated a low-cost, modular gas monitoring system (FerME), assembled from commercially available components. To evaluate its performance and reproducibility relative to the Ankom RF system (Ankom Technology, Macedon, NY, USA), in vitro rumen fermentation experiments were conducted under strictly controlled and identical conditions. Whole rumen contents were collected approximately 2 h post-feeding from individual mid- or late-lactation dairy cows and immediately transported to the laboratory. Each fermenter received 50 mL of processed rumen fluid, 100 mL of anaerobically prepared artificial saliva buffer, and 1.2 g of the donor cow’s diet. Bottles were sealed with the respective system’s pressure sensors, flushed with CO2, and incubated in a 50 L water bath maintained at 39 °C. FerME (New Taipei City, Taiwan) and Ankom RF fermenters were placed side-by-side to ensure uniform thermal conditions. To assess the effect of filter bag use, an additional trial employed Ankom F57 filter bags (Ankom Technology, Macedon, NY, USA; 25 μm pore size). Trial 1 revealed no significant differences in cumulative gas production, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), NH3-N, or pH between systems (p > 0.05). However, the use of filter bags reduced gas output and increased propionate concentrations (p < 0.05). Trial 2, which employed filter bags in both systems, confirmed comparable results, with the FerME system demonstrating improved precision (CV: 4.8% vs. 13.2%). Gas composition (CH4 + CO2: 76–82%) and fermentation parameters remained consistent across systems (p > 0.05). Importantly, with 12 pressure sensors, the total cost of FerME was about half that of the Ankom RF system. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that FerME is a reliable, low-cost alternative for real-time rumen fermentation monitoring and could be suitable for studies in animal nutrition, methane mitigation, and related applications. Background: Rapid urbanization has intensified the challenges of freight transport, particularly in last-mile (LM) delivery, leading to rising costs and environmental externalities. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have emerged as a promising innovation to address these issues. While much of the existing literature emphasizes business and operational perspectives, this study focuses on the acceptance of AVs from the standpoint of e-consumers—individuals who make purchases via digital platforms—in an emerging market context. Methods: Grounded in an extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2), which is specifically suited to consumer-focused technology adoption research, this study incorporates five constructs tailored to AV adoption. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was applied to survey data collected from 304 e-consumers in Northeast Brazil. Results: The findings reveal that performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, and environmental awareness exert significant positive effects on acceptance and intention to use AVs for LM delivery. Social influence shows a weaker, yet still positive, impact. Importantly, price sensitivity exhibits a minimal effect, suggesting that while consumers are generally cost-conscious, perceived value may outweigh price concerns in early adoption stages. Conclusions: These results offer valuable insights for policymakers and logistics providers aiming to implement consumer-oriented, cost-effective AV solutions in LM delivery, particularly in emerging economies. The findings emphasize the need for strategies that highlight the practical, emotional, and environmental benefits of AVs to foster market acceptance. Full article

Hyperloop ultra-high-speed transport presents a transformative opportunity for future mobility systems in smart cities. However, assessing its socio-economic impact remains challenging due to Hyperloop’s unique technological, modal, and operational characteristics. As a novel, fifth mode of transportation—distinct from both aviation and rail—Hyperloop requires tailored evaluation tools for policymakers. This study proposes a custom-designed framework to quantify its macroeconomic effects through changes in gross domestic product (GDP) at the city level. Unlike traditional economic models, the proposed approach is specifically adapted to Hyperloop’s multimodality, infrastructure, speed profile, and digital-green footprint. A Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood (PPML) model is developed and applied at two technology readiness levels (TRL-6 and TRL-9). Case studies of Glasgow, Berlin, and Busan are used to simulate impacts based on geo-spatial features and city-specific trade and accessibility indicators. Results indicate substantial GDP increases driven by factors such as expanded 60 min commute catchment zones, improved trade flows, and connectivity node density. For instance, under TRL-9 conditions, GDP uplift reaches over 260% in certain scenarios. The framework offers a scalable, reproducible tool for policymakers and urban planners to evaluate the economic potential of Hyperloop within the context of sustainable smart city development. This review outlines a comprehensive methodology for the research and development of heterogeneous catalytic technologies (R&D_HeCaTe). Emphasis is placed on the fundamental interactions between reactants, solvents, and heterogeneous catalysts—specifically the roles of catalytic centers and support materials (e.g., functional groups) in modulating activation energies and stabilizing catalytic functionality. Particular attention is given to catalyst deactivation mechanisms and potential regeneration strategies. The application of molecular modeling and chemical engineering analyses, including reaction kinetics, thermal effects, and mass and heat transport phenomena, is identified as essential for R&D_HeCaTe. Reactor configuration is discussed in relation to key physicochemical parameters such as molecular diffusivity, reaction exothermicity, operating temperature and pressure, and the phase and “aggressiveness” of the reaction system. Suitable reactor types—such as suspension reactors, fixed-bed reactors, and flow microreactors—are evaluated accordingly. Economic and environmental considerations are also addressed, with a focus on the complexity of reactions, selectivity versus conversion trade-offs, catalyst disposal, and separation challenges. To illustrate the breadth and applicability of the proposed framework, representative industrial processes are discussed, including ammonia synthesis, fluid catalytic cracking, methanol production, alkyl tert-butyl ethers, and aniline. This paper presents the design and implementation of a high-precision vehicle detection and classification system for toll stations on national highways in Colombia, leveraging LiDAR-based 3D point cloud processing and supervised machine learning. The system integrates a multi-sensor architecture, including a LiDAR scanner, high-resolution cameras, and Doppler radars, with an embedded computing platform for real-time processing and on-site inference. The methodology covers data preprocessing, feature extraction, descriptor encoding, and classification using Support Vector Machines. The system supports eight vehicular categories established by national regulations, which present significant challenges due to the need to differentiate categories by axle count, the presence of lifted axles, and vehicle usage. These distinctions affect toll fees and require a classification strategy beyond geometric profiling. The system achieves 89.9% overall classification accuracy, including 96.2% for light vehicles and 99.0% for vehicles with three or more axles. It also incorporates license plate recognition for complete vehicle traceability. The system was deployed at an operational toll station and has run continuously under real traffic and environmental conditions for over eighteen months. This framework represents a robust, scalable, and strategic technological component within Intelligent Transportation Systems and contributes to data-driven decision-making for road management and toll operations. The safety of lithium-ion batteries during transportation is critically important. However, current standards exhibit limitations, as their environmental testing parameter thresholds fail to fully encompass actual transportation conditions. To enhance both safety and standard applicability, in this study, we focused on four representative environmental conditions: temperature, vibration, shock, and low atmospheric pressure. Field measurements were conducted across road, rail, and air transport modes using a self-developed data acquisition system based on the NearLink communication technology. The measured data were then compared with the threshold values defined in current international and national standards. The results reveal that certain measured values exceeded the upper limits prescribed by existing standards, indicating limitations in their applicability under extreme transport conditions. Based on these findings, we propose revised testing parameters that better reflect actual transport risks, including a temperature cycling range of 72 ± 2 °C (high) and −40 ± 2 °C (low), a shock acceleration limit of 50 gn, adjusted peak frequencies in the vibration PSD profile, and a minimum pressure threshold of 11.6 kPa. These results provide a scientific basis for optimising safety standards and improving the safety of lithium-ion battery transportation. Full article

This study develops an integrated environmental–economic assessment framework to evaluate the life cycle environmental impacts and economic costs of CO2 geological storage and produced water treatment in saline formations in China. Using a case study of a saline aquifer carbon storage project in the Ordos Basin, eight full-chain carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) scenarios were analyzed. The results indicate that environmental and cost performance are primarily influenced by technology choices across carbon capture, transport, and storage stages. The scenario employing potassium carbonate-based capture, pipeline transport, and brine reinjection after a reverse osmosis treatment (S5) achieved the most balanced outcome. Breakeven analyses under three carbon price projection models revealed that carbon price trajectories critically affect project viability, with a steadily rising carbon price enabling earlier profitability. By decoupling CCUS from power systems and focusing on unit CO2 removal, this study provides a transparent and transferable framework to support cross-sectoral deployment. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers aiming to design effective CCUS support mechanisms under future carbon neutrality targets. Full article

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are increasingly pivotal for reducing carbon emissions in supply chain management (SCM); however, research exploring their combined potential from a sustainability perspective remains fragmented. This study aims to systematically map the research landscape and synthesize evidence on the applications, benefits, and challenges. Methods: A systematic scoping review was conducted on 23 peer-reviewed studies from the Scopus database, published between 2013 and 2024. Data were systematically extracted and analyzed for publication trends, application domains (e.g., transportation, warehousing), specific AI and robotic technologies, emissions reduction strategies, and implementation challenges. Results: The analysis reveals that AI-driven logistics optimization is the most frequently reported strategy for reducing transportation emissions. At the same time, robotic automation is commonly associated with improved energy efficiency in warehousing. Despite these benefits, the reviewed literature consistently identifies significant barriers, including the high energy demands of AI computation and complexities in data integration. Conclusions: This review confirms the transformative potential of AI and robotics for developing low-carbon supply chains. An evidence-based framework is proposed to guide practical implementation and identify critical gaps, such as the need for standardized validation benchmarks, to direct future research and accelerate the transition to sustainable SCM. The global energy transition and increasingly rigorous legal regulations aimed at climate protection are driving the search for alternative energy sources, including renewable energy sources (RESs) and waste heat. However, the mismatch between supply and demand presents a significant challenge. Thermal energy storage (TES) technologies, particularly mobile thermal energy storage (M-TES), offer a potential solution to address this gap. M-TES can not only balance supply and demand but also facilitate the transportation of heat from the source to the recipient. This paper reviews the current state of M-TES technologies, focusing on their technology readiness level, key operating parameters, and advantages and disadvantages. It is found that M-TES can be based on sensible heat, latent heat, or thermochemical reactions, with the majority of research and projects centered around latent heat storage. Regarding the type of research, significant progress has been made at the laboratory and simulation levels, while real-world implementation remains limited, with few pilot projects and commercially available systems. Despite the limited number of real-world M-TES implementations, currently existing M-TES systems can store up to 5.4 MWh in temperatures ranging from 58 °C to as high as 1300 °C. These findings highlight the potential of the M-TES and offer data for technology selection, simultaneously indicating the research gaps and future research directions. Full article

Efficient planning of train crew rosters is a key factor in ensuring operational reliability and promoting long-term sustainability in railway transport, both economically and socially. This article presents a systematic approach to developing a crew rostering model in passenger rail transport, with a focus on the operational setting of the train crew depot in Česká Třebová, a city in the Czech Republic. The seven-step methodology includes identifying available train shifts, defining scheduling constraints, creating roster variants, and calculating personnel and time requirements for each option. The proposed roster reduced staffing needs by two employees, increased the average shift duration to 9 h and 42 min, and decreased non-productive time by 384 h annually. These improvements enhance sustainability by optimizing human resource use, lowering unnecessary energy consumption, and improving employees’ work–life balance. The model also provides a quantitative assessment of operational feasibility and economic efficiency. Compared to existing rosters, the proposed model offers clear advantages and remains applicable even in settings with limited technological support. The findings show that a well-designed rostering system can contribute not only to cost savings and personnel stabilization, but also to broader objectives in sustainable public transport, supporting resilient and resource-efficient rail operations. Emerging transportation challenges necessitate cutting-edge technologies for real-time infrastructure and traffic monitoring. To create a dynamic digital twin for intersection monitoring, data gathering, performance assessment, and calibration of microsimulation software, this study presents a state-of-the-art platform that combines high-resolution LiDAR sensor data with VISSIM simulation software. Intending to track traffic flow and evaluate important factors, including congestion, delays, and lane configurations, the platform gathers and analyzes real-time data. The technology allows proactive actions to improve safety and reduce interruptions by utilizing the comprehensive information that LiDAR provides, such as vehicle trajectories, speed profiles, and lane changes. The digital twin technique offers unparalleled precision in traffic and infrastructure state monitoring by fusing real data streams with simulation-based performance analysis. The results show how the platform can transform real-time monitoring and open the door to data-driven decision-making, safer intersections, and more intelligent traffic data collection methods. Using the proposed platform, this study calibrated a VISSIM simulation network to optimize the driving behavior parameters in the software. This study addresses current issues in urban traffic management with real-time solutions, demonstrating the revolutionary impact of emerging technology in intelligent infrastructure monitoring.
