Traditional unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detection and tracking methods have long faced the twin challenges of high cost and poor efficiency. In real-world battlefield environments with complex backgrounds, occlusions, and varying speeds, existing techniques struggle to track small UAVs accurately and stably. To tackle these issues, this paper presents an enhanced YOLOv8N-Drone-based algorithm for improved target tracking of small UAVs. Firstly, a novel module named C2f-DSFEM (Depthwise-Separable and Sobel Feature Enhancement Module) is designed, integrating Sobel convolution with depthwise separable convolution across layers. Edge detail extraction and multi-scale feature representation are synchronized through a bidirectional feature enhancement mechanism, and the discriminability of target features in complex backgrounds is thus significantly enhanced. For the feature confusion problem, the improved lightweight Context Anchored Attention (CAA) mechanism is integrated into the Neck network, which effectively improves the system’s adaptability to complex scenes. By employing a position-aware weight allocation strategy, this approach enables adaptive suppression of background interference and precise focus on the target region, thereby improving localization accuracy. At the level of loss function optimization, the traditional classification loss is replaced by the focal loss (Focal Loss). This mechanism effectively suppresses the contribution of easy-to-classify samples through a dynamic weight adjustment strategy, while significantly increasing the priority of difficult samples in the training process. The class imbalance that exists between the positive and negative samples is then significantly mitigated. Experimental results show the enhanced YOLOv8 boosts mean average precision (Map@0.5) by 12.3%, hitting 99.2%. In terms of tracking performance, the proposed YOLOv8 N-Drone algorithm achieves a 19.2% improvement in Multiple Object Tracking Accuracy (MOTA) under complex multi-scenario conditions. Additionally, the IDF1 score increases by 6.8%, and the number of ID switches is reduced by 85.2%, indicating significant improvements in both accuracy and stability of UAV tracking. Compared to other mainstream algorithms, the proposed improved method demonstrates significant advantages in tracking performance, offering a more effective and reliable solution for small-target tracking tasks in UAV applications. To enhance the reliability of electric propulsion in electric aircraft and address power interruptions caused by current sensor failures, this study proposes a current sensorless fault-tolerant control strategy for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. First, a hierarchical architecture is constructed to fuse multi-phase electrical signals in the fault diagnosis layer (sliding mode observer). A symbolic function for the reaching law observer is designed based on Lyapunov theory, in order to generate current predictions for fault diagnosis. Second, when a fault occurs, the system switches to the LSTM reconstruction layer. Finally, gating units are used to model nonlinear dynamics to achieve direct mapping of speed/position to phase current. Verification using a physical prototype shows that the proposed method can complete mode switching within 10 ms after a sensor failure, which is 80% faster than EKF, and its speed error is less than 2.5%, fully meeting the high speed error requirements of electric aircraft propulsion systems (i.e., ≤3%). The current reconstruction RMSE is reduced by more than 50% compared with that of the EKF, which ensures continuous and reliable control while maintaining the stable operation of the motor and realizing rapid switching. The intelligent algorithm and sliding mode control fusion strategy meet the requirements of high real-time performance and provide a highly reliable fault-tolerant scheme for electric aircraft propulsion. Dynamic wireless charging systems have emerged as a promising solution to extend the driving range of electric vehicles by enabling energy transfer while the vehicle is in motion. However, the segment-based charging lane structure introduces challenges such as pulsation of the output power and the need for precise switching control of the transmitting segments. This paper proposes a position-sensorless control method for managing transmitting lines in a dynamic wireless charging system. The proposed approach uses a segmented charging lane structure combined with two receiving coils and LCC compensation circuits on both the transmitting and receiving sides. Based on theoretical analysis, the study determines the optimal switching positions and signals to reduce the current fluctuation. To validate the proposed method, a dynamic wireless charging system prototype with a power rating of 3kW was designed, constructed, and tested in a laboratory environment. The results demonstrate that the proposed position-sensorless control method effectively mitigates power fluctuations and enhances the stability and efficiency of the wireless charging process. Sensor fusion in intelligent suspension systems constitutes a fundamental technology for optimizing vehicle dynamic stability, ride comfort, and occupant safety. By integrating data from multiple sensor modalities, this study proposes a hierarchical multi-sensor fusion framework for active suspension control, aiming to enhance control precision. Initially, a binocular vision system is employed for target detection, enabling the identification of lane curvature initiation points and speed bumps, with real-time distance measurements. Subsequently, the integration of Global Positioning System (GPS) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) data facilitates the extraction of road elevation profiles ahead of the vehicle. A BP-PID control strategy is implemented to formulate mode-switching rules for the active suspension under three distinct road conditions: flat road, curved road, and obstacle road. Additionally, an ant colony optimization algorithm is utilized to fine-tune four suspension parameters. Utilizing the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation platform, the observed reductions in vertical, pitch, and roll accelerations were 5.37%, 9.63%, and 11.58%, respectively, thereby substantiating the efficacy and robustness of this approach. The education sector in Tanzania faces significant challenges, especially in public primary schools. Unmanageably large classes and critical teacher–pupil ratios hinder the provision of tailored tutoring, impeding pupils’ educational growth. However, artificial intelligence (AI) could provide a way forward. Advances in generative AI can be leveraged to create interactive and effective intelligent tutoring systems, which have recently been built into embodied systems such as social robots. Motivated by the pivotal influence of teachers’ attitudes on the adoption of educational technologies, this study undertakes a qualitative investigation of Tanzanian primary school mathematics teachers’ perceptions of contextualised intelligent social robots. Thirteen teachers from six schools in both rural and urban settings observed pupils learning with a social robot. They reported their views during qualitative interviews. The results, analysed thematically, reveal a generally positive attitude towards using social robots in schools. While commended for their effective teaching and suitability for one-to-one tutoring, concerns were raised about incorrect and inconsistent feedback, language code-switching, response latency, and the lack of support infrastructure. We suggest actionable steps towards adopting tutoring systems and social robots in schools in Tanzania and similar low-resource countries, paving the way for their adoption to redress teachers’ workloads and improve educational outcomes. Inconsistency in the structural strengths of a membrane wing under positive and negative loads has undesirable impacts on the aeroelastic deflections of the wing, which results in more significant flight control system modeling errors and worsens the performance of the aircraft. In this paper, an integrated dynamic model is derived for a membrane-wing aircraft based on the structural dynamics equation of the membrane wing and the flight dynamics equation of the traditional fixed wing. Based on state feedback control theory, an autopilot system is designed to unify the flight and control properties of different flight and wing deformation statuses. The system uses models of different operating regions to estimate the dynamic response of the vehicle and compares the estimation results with the sensor signals. Based on the compared results, the autopilot can identify the overall flight and select the correct operating region for the control system. By switching to the operating region with the minimum modeling error, the autopilot system maintains good flight performance while flying in turbulence. According to the simulation results, compared with traditional rigid aircraft autopilots, the proposed autopilot can reduce the absolute maximum attack angles by nearly 27% and the absolute maximum wingtip twist angles by nearly 25% under gust conditions. This enhanced robustness and stability performance demonstrates the autopilot’s significant potential for practical deployment in micro-aerial vehicles, particularly in applications demanding reliable operation under turbulent conditions, such as military surveillance, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, or infrastructure inspection. This article aims to utilize a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) to modulate coupling behavior of silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguides to perform an optical switch based on a directional coupling (DC) mechanism. There are two states of the switch. First state, a Si3N4 wire is initially positioned up suspended in the air. In the second state, this wire will be moved down to be placed between two arms of the DC waveguides, changing the coupling behavior to achieve bar and cross states of the optical switch function. In the future, the MEMS will be used to move this wire down. In this work, we present simulations of the two static states to optimize the DC structure parameters. Based on the simulated results, the device size is 8.8 μm × 55 μm. The insertion loss is calculated to be approximately 0.24 dB and 0.33 dB, the extinction ratio is approximately 24.70 dB and 25.46 dB, and the crosstalk is approximately −24.60 dB and −25.56 dB, respectively. In the C band of optical communication, the insertion loss ranges from 0.18 dB to 0.47 dB. As such, this device will exhibit excellent optical switch performance and provide advantages in many integrated optics-related optical systems applications. Furthermore, it can be used in optical communications, data centers, LiDAR, and so on, enhancing important reference value for such applications. Full article

In this paper, a new solution is proposed for the problem of mooring safety of large ships in complex sea conditions. Firstly, a dual-mode mooring system is designed to adaptively switch between active control and passive energy storage, adjusting the mooring strategy based on real-time sea conditions. Second, a collaborative analysis platform based on AQWA-Python-MATLAB/Simulink was researched and developed. Thirdly, based on the above simulation platform, the performance of the mooring system and the effects of different configurations on the stability of ship motion and dynamic tension of the cable are emphasized. Finally, by comparing the different mooring positions under various sea conditions with the traditional mooring system, the results show that the constant tension mooring system significantly improves the stability and safety of the ship under both conventional and extreme sea conditions, effectively reducing the fluctuation of cable tension. Through the optimization analysis, it is determined that the configuration of bow and stern cables is the optimal solution, which ensures safety while also improving economic benefits. Full article

This paper addresses the problem of optimal stabilization for stochastic dynamical systems characterized by Markov switches and concentration points of jumps, which is a scenario not adequately covered by classical stability conditions. Unlike traditional approaches requiring a strictly positive minimal interval between jumps, we allow jump moments to accumulate at a finite point. Utilizing Lyapunov function methods, we derive sufficient conditions for exponential stability in the mean square and asymptotic stability in probability. We provide explicit constructions of Lyapunov functions adapted to scenarios with jump concentration points and develop conditions under which these functions ensure system stability. For linear stochastic differential equations, the stabilization problem is further simplified to solving a system of Riccati-type matrix equations. This work provides essential theoretical foundations and practical methodologies for stabilizing complex stochastic systems that feature concentration points, expanding the applicability of optimal control theory. In recent years, pneumatic stages have attracted attention as stages for semiconductor manufacturing equipment due to their low cost and minimal maintenance requirements. However, pneumatic stages include nonlinear elements such as friction and air compressibility, making precise control challenging. To address this issue, this paper aims to achieve high-precision positioning by applying a nonlinear position control method to pneumatic stages. To achieve this, we propose a control method that combines filtered right coprime factorization and Prescribed Performance Control–Sliding Mode Control (PPC-SMC). Filtered right coprime factorization not only stabilizes and simplifies the plant but also reduces noise. Furthermore, PPC-SMC enables safer and faster control by constraining the system state within a switching surface that imposes limits on the error range. Through experiments on the actual system, it was confirmed that the proposed method achieves dramatically higher precision and faster tracking compared to conventional methods. Full article

This study aims to evaluate the real-world efficacy and safety of aflibercept 8 mg intravitreal injections (IVTs) in pretreated patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) throughout the first three IVTs. Background: Established anti-vascular-endothelial-growth-factor (anti-VEGF) therapies positively impact the progression of nAMD but require frequent administration, thus burdening patients and the healthcare system. Pivotal trials of the recently approved aflibercept 8 mg have demonstrated extended dosing intervals with comparable safety to standard treatments. However, real-world data is still scarce. Methods: A retrospective, single-center single-arm analysis was conducted on 22 eyes from 18 pretreated nAMD patients. Eyes were switched from other anti-VEGF agents to aflibercept 8 mg injections continuing a treat-and-extend regimen (no loading dose after switching). Treatment intervals and structural (central subfield thickness (CST); disease activity) and functional (best corrected visual acuity (BCVA)) outcomes were assessed at baseline (date of first aflibercept 8 mg injection) and at follow-up examinations until follow-up 3. Safety data, including intraocular pressure changes, were recorded. Results: Over a median follow-up of 16.6 weeks (IQR 15.1–27.0), patients switched to aflibercept 8 mg showed prolonged intervals between injections (5.5 weeks vs. 7 weeks, p < 0.001, Wilcoxon signed-rank test), reduced disease activity, stable CST, and stable BCVA. One patient experienced transient intraocular pressure elevation, which resolved without intervention. No other adverse events were observed. Conclusions: Treatment with aflibercept 8 mg appears to provide effective disease control with prolonged treatment intervals in switched nAMD patients in routine clinical practice. These findings further indicate the potential for reducing treatment burden. Full article

In Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-denied environments, opportunistic positioning using non-cooperative Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite signals has shown strong potential. However, dynamic platforms face challenges in maintaining sufficient satellite counts and favorable geometric distributions due to limited signal quality and short observation windows. To address this, we propose a fast satellite selection algorithm based on the Non-Dominated Sorting Whale Optimization Algorithm (NSWOA) for dynamic, multi-constellation LEO opportunistic navigation. By introducing Pareto non-dominated solutions, the algorithm balances Doppler Geometric Dilution of Precision (DGDOP), signal strength, residual visibility time, and receiver sensitivity. Through iterative optimization, it constructs a subset of satellites with minimal DGDOP while reducing computational burden, enabling real-time fusion and switching at the receiver end. We validate the algorithm through UAV-based experiments in dynamic scenarios. Compared to GWO, PSO, and NSGA-II, the proposed method achieves computation time reductions of 27.06%, 27.05%, and 68.57%, respectively. It also reduces the overall navigation solution time to 54.96% of that required when using all visible satellites, significantly enhancing real-time responsiveness and system robustness. These results demonstrate that the NSWOA-based satellite selection algorithm outperforms existing intelligent methods in both computational efficiency and optimization accuracy, making it well-suited for real-time, multi-constellation LEO dynamic opportunistic navigation. The 32-bit floating-point (FP32) format has many useful applications, particularly in computing and neural network systems. The classic 32-bit fixed-point (FXP32) format often introduces lower quality of representation (i.e., precision), making it unsuitable for real deployment, despite offering faster computations and reduced computational cost, which positively impacts energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose a switched FXP32 format able to compete with or surpass the widely used FP32 format across a wide variance range. It actually proposes switching between the possible values of key parameters according to the variance level of the data modeled with the Laplacian distribution. Precision analysis is achieved using the signal-to-quantization noise ratio (SQNR) as a performance metric, introduced based on the analogy between digital formats and quantization. Theoretical SQNR results provided in a wide range of variance confirm the design objectives. Experimental and simulation results obtained using neural network weights further support the approach. The strong agreement between the experiment, simulation, and theory indicates the efficiency of this proposal in encoding Laplacian data, as well as its potential applicability in neural networks. This paper addresses the issues of sensor failures and actuator faults in mining tracked mobile vehicles (TMVs) operating in harsh environments by proposing a global fixed-time fault-tolerant control strategy based on a hierarchical unknown input observer structure. First, a kinematic and dynamic model of the TMV is established considering side slip and track slip, and its linear parameter-varying (LPV) model is constructed through parameter-dependent linearization. Then, a distributed structure consisting of four collaborating low-dimensional observers is designed, including a state observer, a disturbance observer, a position sensor fault observer, and a wheel speed sensor fault observer, and the fixed-time convergence of the closed-loop system is proven. Additionally, by equivalently treating actuator faults as power losses, an observer capable of identifying and compensating for motor efficiency losses is designed. Finally, an adaptive fault-tolerant control law is proposed by combining nominal control, disturbance compensation, and sliding mode switching terms, achieving global fixed-time stability and fault tolerance. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed control system maintains excellent trajectory tracking performance even in the presence of sensor faults and actuator power losses, with tracking errors less than 0.1 m. LED lighting plays a pivotal role in the illumination landscape owing to its substantial energy efficiency, prolonged operational lifespan, environmental advantages, superior light quality, and its capacity for advanced lighting control. Flicker in led lighting systems has emerged as a substantial concern and is appropriate to its potential opposing impacts on human health and visual comfort. Hence, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis, design, and mitigation strategy for flicker in a DC-DC led driver that incorporates a valley fill circuit. The initial stage of this investigation involves an analysis of a conventional cuk converter. However, it is noted that this converter produces an inverting output and experiences high current stress on the semiconductor switch. Consequently, to address these limitations, a non-inverting cuk converter (NICC) is introduced, resulting in a positive output, reduced voltage and current ripple and increased efficiency. To surmount these challenges, the implementation of a valley fill circuit is proposed. This addition facilitates the rapid attainment of a steady state, increases efficiency, and substantially reduces the output voltage and current ripple. An in-depth analysis of the stress imposed on the switch is conducted, leading to the development of a circuit designed to extend the operational life of the LED driver. Therefore, this paper compares the topologies of three different DC-DC cuk power converters. These converters include conventional cuk, non-inverting cuk (NICC), and non-inverting cuk with valley-fill. The performance metrics are examined and compared for all three topologies. The findings of this study affirm that the proposed driver circuit is highly effective in mitigating flicker, thereby enhancing the user experience and elevating the quality of led lighting, all while maintaining energy efficiency. The MATLAB simulations of these converters are performed to validate the theoretical results. Full article
