Although technological innovations are often intended to improve quality and efficiency, they can exacerbate systemic challenges when not aligned with the principles of value-based care. As a result, healthcare systems in many countries face persistent inefficiencies stemming from the overuse, underuse, misuse, and waste associated with the adoption of health technology. This narrative review examines the dual impact of healthcare technology and evaluates how contract mechanisms can serve as strategic tools for promoting cost-effective, outcome-oriented integration. Drawing from healthcare management, and supply chain literature, this paper analyzes various payment and contract models, including performance-based, bundled, cost-sharing, and revenue-sharing agreements, through the lens of stakeholder alignment. It explores how these mechanisms influence provider behavior, patient access, and system sustainability. The study contends that well-designed contract mechanisms can align stakeholder incentives, reduce inefficiencies, and support the delivery of high-value care across diverse healthcare settings. We provide concrete examples to illustrate how various contract mechanisms impact the integration of health technologies in practice. Full article

Construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) contains various types of substances, which require different processing methods to maximize benefits and minimize harm to realize the goal of the circular economy. Therefore, it is urgent to promote the on-site sorting of C&D waste and explore the determinants of managers’ waste sorting intention. Based on a comprehensive literature review of C&D waste management, seven determinants are identified to explore how antecedent factors influence waste sorting intention by symmetric and asymmetric techniques. Firstly, the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was adopted to analyze the data collected from 489 managers to assess the net impact of each determinant on their intentions. Then, the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) provided another perspective by determining the configurations of the causal conditions that lead to higher or lower levels of intention. The PLS-SEM results reveal that all determinants show a significant positive relationship with the intention except for the perceived risks, which are negatively correlated with managers’ attitudes and intentions regarding C&D waste sorting. Moreover, top management support and subjective norms from other project participants and the public exhibit a huge impact, while the influence of perceived behavioral control (PBC) and policies is moderate. Meanwhile, fsQCA provides a complementary analysis of the complex causality that PLS-SEM fails to capture. That is, fsQCA identified six and five configurations resulting in high and low levels of intention to sort the C&D waste, respectively, and highlighted the crucial role of core conditions. The results provide theoretical and practical insights regarding proper C&D waste management and enhancing sustainable development. Full article

The sustainable management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) relies heavily on community participation in separating it at the source and delivering it to collection systems. These practices are crucial for reducing pollution, protecting ecosystems, and maximizing resource recovery. However, in the Global South context, with conditions of socioeconomic vulnerability, community participation in the sustainable management of MSW remains limited, highlighting the need to generate context-specific interventions. MSW includes items such as household appliances, batteries, and electronic devices, which require specialized handling due to their size, hazardous components, or material complexity. This study implemented a Community-Based Social Marketing approach during the research and design phases of an intervention focused on promoting source separation and management of hard-to-manage MSW in five municipalities within the administrative region of Norte de Santander (Colombia), which borders Venezuela. Using a mixed-methods approach, we collected data from 1775 individuals (63.83% women; M age = 33.48 years; SD = 17.25), employing social mapping, focus groups, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and a survey questionnaire. The results show that the source separation and delivery of hard-to-manage MSW to collection systems are limited by a set of psychosocial, structural, and institutional barriers that interact with each other, affecting communities’ willingness and capacity for action. Furthermore, a prediction model of willingness to engage in separation and delivery behaviors showed a good fit (R2 = 0.83). The strongest predictors were awareness of the negative consequences of non-participation and perceived environmental benefits, with subjective norms contributing to a lesser extent. Based on these results, we designed a context-specific intervention focused on reducing these barriers and promoting community engagement in the sustainable management of hard-to-manage MSW. In response to growing environmental pressures and material constraints, circular economy principles are gaining traction across manufacturing sectors. However, most existing frameworks emphasize design and supply chain considerations, with limited focus on how circularity can be operationalized within internal manufacturing systems. This paper proposes a conceptual model that embeds circular operations at the core of production strategy. Grounded in circular economy theory, operations management, and socio-technical systems thinking, the model identifies four key operational pillars: circular input management, looping process and waste valorization, product-life extension, and reverse logistics. These are supported by enabling factors—digital infrastructure, organizational culture, and leadership—and mediated by operational flexibility, which facilitates adaptive, closed-loop performance. The model aims to align internal processes with long-term sustainability outcomes, specifically resource efficiency and operational resilience. Practical implications are outlined for resource-intensive industries such as automotive, electronics, and FMCG, along with a readiness assessment framework for guiding implementation. This study offers a pathway for future empirical research and policy development by integrating circular logic into the structural and behavioral dimensions of operations. The model contributes to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9 and SDG 12, by positioning circularity as a regenerative operational strategy rather than a peripheral initiative. Petroleum oily sludge (OLS), a hazardous by-product of the petroleum industry, and high-alkali lignite (HAL), an underutilized low-rank coal, pose significant challenges to sustainable waste management and resource efficiency. This study systematically investigated the combustion behavior, reaction pathways, and gaseous-pollutant-release mechanisms across varying blend ratios, utilizing integrated thermogravimetric-mass spectrometry analysis (TG-MS), interaction analysis, and kinetic modeling. The key findings reveal that co-combustion significantly enhances the combustion performance compared to individual fuels. This is evidenced by reduced ignition and burnout temperatures, as well as an improved comprehensive combustion index. Notably, an interaction analysis revealed coexisting synergistic and antagonistic effects, with the synergistic effect peaking at a blending ratio of 50% OLS due to the complementary properties of the fuels. The activation energy was found to be at its minimum value of 32.5 kJ/mol at this ratio, indicating lower reaction barriers. Regarding gas emissions, co-combustion at a 50% OLS blending ratio reduces incomplete combustion products while increasing CO2, indicating a more complete reaction. Crucially, sulfur-containing pollutants (SO2, H2S) are suppressed, whereas nitrogen-containing emissions (NH3, NO2) increase but remain controllable. This study provides novel insights into the synergistic mechanisms between OLS and HAL during co-combustion, offering foundational insights for the optimization of OLS-HAL combustion systems toward efficient energy recovery and sustainable industrial waste management. Geopolymers (GPs), as promising alternatives to ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based concrete, have gained interest in the last 20 years due to their enhanced mechanical properties, durability, and lower environmental impact. Synthesized from industrial by-products such as slag and fly ash, geopolymers offer a sustainable solution to waste management, resource utilization, and carbon dioxide reduction. However, similarly to OPC, geopolymers exhibit brittle behavior, and this characteristic defines a limit for structural applications. To tackle this issue, researchers have focused on the characterization, development, and implementation of fiber-reinforced geopolymers (FRGs), which incorporate various fibers to enhance toughness, ductility, and crack resistance, allowing their use in a wide range of structural applications. Following a general overview of sustainability considerations, this review critically analyzes the structural performance and capability of geopolymers in structural repair applications. Geopolymers demonstrate notable potential in new construction and repair applications. However, challenges such as complex mix designs, the availability of alkaline activators, curing temperatures, fiber matrix compatibility issues, and limited standards are restricting its large-scale adoption. The analysis and consolidation of an extensive dataset would support the viability of geopolymer as a durable and sustainable alternative to what is currently used in the construction industry, especially when fiber reinforcement is effectively integrated. Food waste is a global sustainability issue, and in Japan, approximately half of all food waste is generated in households. This study focused on refrigerator management behaviors aimed at using up the food inventory in the home. An intervention study involving 119 households with two or more members across Japan, with a two-week baseline period and a two-week intervention, was conducted. Target behaviors were set as “search food that should be eaten quickly,” “move it to a visible place,” and “use the foods that should be eaten quickly,” and tools to support these behaviors were selected, including an organizer for the refrigerator, photos, and food management apps. Each tool was assigned to approximately 30 households, and a control group was established. Food waste was measured using a cloud-based automatic weighing system, and all participants were asked to separate avoidable food waste at home and dispose of it in the designated waste bin. During the intervention period, the average weekly food waste per household decreased by 29% to 51% in the intervention group, while there was little change in the control group. An analysis using a two-way mixed ANOVA revealed a marginally significant interaction (p < 0.10), indicating moderate effectiveness. Among the behaviors contributing to reduced food waste, three actions—“having trouble not being able to recall food inventory at home during shopping,” “moving foods that should be used sooner,” and “organizing refrigerator”—showed significant interaction effects (p < 0.05) in a two-way mixed ANOVA, indicating the effectiveness of the intervention. The HoReCa (Hotels, Restaurants, and Cafes) sector plays a pivotal role in the economy due to its strong connections with various other industries, including agriculture, food and beverage, construction, packaging, waste management, water, and textiles. Given its broad impact, understanding the perceptions of students—emerging consumers and future professionals—could provide valuable insights for businesses seeking to enhance sustainable practices in ways that resonate with younger generations and improve their competitiveness. However, there is still limited understanding of how students perceive and engage with sustainability in this sector. This study explores student perceptions of sustainability practices within the HoReCa sector, examining their awareness levels, expectations, and behavior. The objective is to assess how effectively current business approaches align with student values regarding sustainability initiatives and identify key factors influencing their engagement. A structured questionnaire was distributed among university students, and the collected data was analyzed using statistical techniques to identify meaningful trends and correlations. Findings revealed a notable disconnect between students’ professed sustainability values and their actual behavior. Primary obstacles included price sensitivity, skepticism toward environmental marketing claims, and insufficient access to clear sustainability information from businesses. Despite supporting sustainable initiatives in principle, students often struggle to translate their values into purchasing decisions. The research suggests that greater business transparency, enhanced sustainability education, and incentive programs could foster increased student engagement. Full article

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management programs can help to mitigate the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. However, their success largely depends on the public willingness to engage in the pro-environmental separation and delivery of MSW, particularly for difficult-to-manage items such as electronics, batteries and appliances, which often contain toxic materials. Most existing research tends to focus on infrastructure improvements or behavioral interventions, with little integration of psychosocial and contextual analyses to develop evidence-based strategies for increasing community participation in the sustainable management of MSW. To address this gap, we conducted a study combining quantitative data from surveys with qualitative and geospatial data obtained through social mapping sessions and information obtained from local waste collectors in five municipalities in Norte de Santander, Colombia—a region marked by high socioeconomic vulnerability. Our study presents a novel integration of psychosocial and geospatial data to inform MSW interventions in low-resource settings. We identified that the awareness of the consequences of poor MSW management, the awareness of environmental benefits of delivery and the subjective norm predicts the willingness to separate and deliver MSW. Nonetheless, various psychosocial and contextual barriers hinder these actions. Based on these insights, we propose a low-cost, community-tailored intervention to enhance the separation and delivery of difficult-to-manage MSW and foster civic engagement in similar socio-environmental contexts. The increasing frequency of Sargassum spp. blooms represents a global environmental challenge, impacting coastal ecosystems and requiring sustainable management strategies. This study evaluates the potential of Sargassum spp. extract as an encapsulating material for biological pest control, contributing to marine waste valorization. Pelagic Sargassum spp. collected from the Havana coast was processed to obtain an alginate-rich extract, which was used to encapsulate Beauveria bassiana conidia via ionic gelation. FTIR confirmed characteristic carboxylate absorption bands, indicating structural similarities with commercial alginate, while TGA demonstrated comparable thermal behavior. Beads exhibited consistent dimensions (0.5–3 mm) with irregular post-drying shapes. Encapsulation efficiency yielded a conidial concentration of 1.43 × 108 conidia per mL, ensuring retention within the matrix. Long-term viability was confirmed as conidia remained viable and able to grow after six months, potentially benefiting from extract-derived compounds. These findings highlight the potential of repurposing Sargassum spp. for sustainable agricultural applications, advancing environmentally friendly pest management while addressing the ecological burden of excessive Sargassum accumulation. Sustainability and the circular economy are increasingly recognized as global priorities, particularly in industrial waste management. This study explores the development of a sustainable composite material using wood waste and natural fibers, contributing to circular economy practices. Sandwich panels were manufactured with a green epoxy resin matrix, incorporating wood waste in the core and flax fibers in the outer layers. Mechanical tests on the sandwich panel revealed a facing bending stress of 92.79 MPa and a core shear stress of 2.43 MPa. The panel demonstrated good compressive performance, with an edgewise compressive strength of 61.39 MPa and a flatwise compressive strength of 96.66 MPa. The material’s viscoelastic behavior was also characterized. In stress relaxation tests (from an initial 21 MPa), the panel’s stress decreased by 20.2% after three hours. The experimental relaxation data were successfully fitted by the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts (KWW) model for both short- and long-term predictions. In creep tests, the panel showed a 21.30% increase in displacement after three hours under a 21 MPa load. For creep behavior, the KWW model was preferable for short-term predictions, while the Findley model provided a better fit for long-term predictions. Full article

Mobile phone waste management is a growing environmental challenge, with improper disposal contributing to resource depletion, pollution and missed opportunities for material recovery. This study presents the findings of a dual-purpose survey (11,163 respondents) conducted in a wide academic context in Italy, aimed at both assessing mobile phones disposal behaviors and knowledge and raising awareness through structured educational prompts about sustainable e-waste management. The results reveal significant behavioral patterns and knowledge gaps across demographic groups. While most respondents (90.6%) own one phone, males tend to have more than females. Phones are replaced every 3–5 years by 48.8% of users and every 1–3 years by 36.7%, with students tending to replace them earlier. Only 20.2% replace their phone when irreparable while 46% replace them due to high repair costs. A large majority (92.3%) store old devices at home, forming an estimated urban mine of 29,799 unused phones. The awareness of hazardous components is higher than that of critical raw materials, with males more informed than females and students in scientific fields displaying greater awareness than those in humanities and health disciplines. The awareness of official take-back programs is particularly low, especially among younger generations. Notably, 90% reported increased awareness from the educational survey and 93.1% expressed willingness to use an on-campus e-waste collection system. These results highlight the role of universities as catalysts for sustainable behavior, supporting the design of targeted educational strategies and policy actions in line with circular economy principles and Sustainable Development Goal 12 “Responsible consumption and production”. Hazardous medical waste (HMW) presents significant environmental and public health challenges, particularly in the context of rising healthcare demands and the global push for sustainable resource management. This study investigates the evolution of HMW management through a bibliometric and thematic analysis of 1703 articles published between 2020 and 2025, retrieved from the Web of Science database. Using VOSviewer, co-occurrence mapping and term clustering reveal six major conceptual domains, including thermal treatment technologies, operational optimization, environmental indicators, and behavioral dimensions. This study adds value by applying a dual bibliometric–thematic lens to provide new insights into the operational, technological, and sustainability dimensions of HMW. The analysis identifies a gradual shift from traditional disposal methods to circular models focused on resource valorization through pyrolysis, gasification, and sterilization. The clothing industry greatly impacts the global economy by producing billions of pieces of clothing and employing millions. However, it negatively impacts the environment, as it is one of the most polluting sectors in the world. This bibliometric review aims to identify influential authors and affiliations, journals, productive and cited countries, emerging and recent themes, and future research directions focusing on the dynamics of clothing brands’ sustainability practices. A comprehensive dataset from Scopus and the Web of Science contains 612 articles, and Biblioshiny and VOSviewer were used to analyze the data. Findings reveal that sustainability is not just a concern for developed countries but is also gaining attention in emerging economies like India. This bibliometric analysis presents its relationship with sustainable development goals (SDGs), combines performance analysis and science mapping of clothing brands’ sustainability practices, and evaluates thematic clusters to highlight future research scopes to fill the literature gap for further concentration on behavioral aspects, advanced supply chains, effective communication, and promoting the usage of sustainable technologies, which can help to align with business models for sustainability and resilience. Therefore, clothing brands’ sustainability practices should focus on smart and functional clothing through eco-friendly manufacturing and designing long-lasting clothes to enrich clothing performance. They should adopt innovative technologies for resource utilization, recycling, waste management, supply chain, and also emphasize communication with the consumers to encourage them to purchase eco-friendly and long-lasting clothes. Brine purification is an important process unit in chlor-alkali industrial plants for the production of sodium hydroxide, chlorine, and hydrogen. The membrane cell process requires ultrapure brine, which is obtained through mechanical filtration, chemical precipitation and fine polishing, and ion exchange using polymer resins. Temperature variations can lead to the degradation of the exchange properties of these resins, primarily causing a decrease in their exchange capacity, which negatively impacts the efficiency of the brine purification. After multiple ion exchange regeneration cycles, significant quantities of spent resins may be generated. These must be managed in accordance with resource efficiency and hazardous waste management to ensure the sustainability of the industrial process. In this paper, a comparative study is conducted to characterize the long-term stability of a new commercial chelating resin used in the industrial electrolysis process. The spectroscopic methods of physicochemical characterization included: scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The thermal behavior of the polymer resins was evaluated using the following thermogravimetric methods: thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and differential thermal analysis (DTA), while the moisture behavior was studied using dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) analysis. To assess the energy potential, the polymer resins were analyzed to determine their calorific value and overall energy content. Full article
