This article examines the legal and practical dimensions of religious education (RE) in Austria with a particular focus on interreligious education as an emerging pedagogical and societal response to increasing religious and cultural diversity. It begins by situating the discussion within Austria’s historical and constitutional framework, in which RE is governed as a res mixta—a joint responsibility shared between the state and legally recognized churches and religious societies (CRSs). The analysis highlights how this model of power-sharing is enshrined in both constitutional and ordinary legislation, granting CRSs extensive autonomy in the organization, content, and supervision of denominational RE. Despite the absence of explicit legal provisions for interreligious education, the article demonstrates that interreligious teaching practices can be implemented through cooperative arrangements between CRSs, particularly when aligned with national educational goals and international commitments to tolerance, religious freedom, and other human rights. It further analyses curricular references to interreligiosity across various denominational RE programs and discusses the institutional potential for integrating interreligious competencies into teacher training and school practice. Drawing on the example of the project Integration through Interreligious Education at the University Graz, a cooperative initiative between the Catholic Church and the Islamic Religious Society in Austria (IGGÖ) from 2017 to 2023, the article outlines how interreligious education was legally contextualized and contractually formalized. The article concludes that interreligious education, though legally unregulated, is both feasible and desirable within Austria’s current legal and educational framework. It calls for greater normative clarity and policy support to ensure the sustainability and broader implementation of such models, which foster mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence in a pluralistic society. A balance between support and independence in guardianship systems is of high concern, especially with those who need help in making decisions. The research presents a novel approach to evaluating voluntary models of guardianship, focusing on the preservation of individual autonomy and examining the underlying decision symmetry in assessing diverse guardianship options. The ultimate solution to the inherent uncertainty and lack of objectivity in expert evaluations is to apply the circular q-rung orthopair fuzzy (Cq-ROF) combined compromise for ideal solution (CoCoFISo) approach, an effective multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model that integrates ranking and sorting views using a Cq-ROF framework within a symmetry-oriented analytical perspective. These are five major assessment factors: how well autonomy is preserved, legal and ethical adherence, psychological health, social integration aid, and risk prevention. It explores ten alternative approaches to guardianship, ranging from complete legal guardianship to community-based self-management solutions, and the use of technology as an element of support. The suggested approach can facilitate more sophisticated modelling of expert opinions, rather than relying on simplistic and straightforward distinctions and diverse evaluations. The case study results indicate that the hybrid and supported forms of decision-making could offer opportunities to preserve a high degree of personal autonomy while ensuring safety and compliance. The research gives a coherent, adaptable, and explainable approach to managing ethical and policy-level judgment concerning voluntary guardianship systems. Full article

In service-intensive, compliance-driven settings such as banking, identifying how internal corporate social responsibility (ICSR) fosters employees’ vitality and learning is crucial for sustainable organisational performance. Amid growing interest in employee thriving, this study explores how perceived internal corporate social responsibility (PICSR) and moral meaningfulness (MM) shape thriving at work (TaW) through organisational embeddedness (OE). Rooted in self-determination theory, the findings reveal OE as a key mediator between PICSR and TaW, shedding light on how ICSR initiatives influence employee dynamics. The study also reveals that MM alone does not significantly predict TaW directly, but does so indirectly through OE, highlighting the importance of contextual mechanisms. Additionally, it identifies a surprising negative moderating effect of risk-taking, one dimension of intrapreneurial behaviour (IB), on the relationship between OE and TaW, while innovativeness, another dimension, shows no such effect. Theoretical and practical implications underscore the importance of aligning ICSR practices with employees’ psychological needs, supporting moral alignment, and tailoring support for intrapreneurs. Organisations must achieve a balance between autonomy and security to sustain engagement and innovation, advancing human and organisational sustainability, ultimately leading to thriving. Children’s neighborhood mobility has been widely examined through either independent movement or psychological autonomy, yet few studies consider how these dimensions intersect in the lived realities of low-income, high-density environments. This study explores how neighborhood conditions simultaneously constrain and enable children’s experiences of mobility and autonomy, focusing on People’s Housing Project (PPR) estates in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Using a qualitative, child-centered approach, data were collected through child-led walks and mental mapping with 23 children aged 7–12. The child-led walks revealed everyday hazards that restricted children’s freedom of movement and heightened concerns for safety. Conversely, the mental maps highlighted intangible but significant attachments that fostered a sense of belonging, pride, and autonomy despite material deprivation. Together, these findings illustrate that children’s well-being depends not only on opportunities for independent mobility but also on affective and symbolic dimensions of autonomy embedded in their neighborhood environments. The study concludes that planning and housing policies must move beyond efficiency and density to address children’s rights to safe, supportive, and meaningful spaces that nurture both freedom of movement and autonomy in everyday life. The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has revolutionized how individuals and organizations interact with technology. These systems, ranging from conversational agents to creative tools, are increasingly embedded in daily life. However, their effectiveness relies heavily on the usability of their graphical user interfaces (GUIs), which serve as the primary medium for user interaction. Moreover, the design of these interfaces must align with ethical principles such as transparency, fairness, and user autonomy to ensure responsible usage. This study evaluates the usability of GUIs for three widely-used GenAI applications, including ChatGPT (GPT-4), Gemini (1.5), and Claude (3.5 Sonnet) , using a heuristics-based and user-based testing approach (experimental-qualitative investigation). A total of 12 participants from a research organization in Australia, participated in structured usability evaluations, applying 14 usability heuristics to identify key issues and ethical concerns. The results indicate that Claude’s GUI is the most usable among the three, particularly due to its clean and minimalistic design. However, all applications demonstrated specific usability issues, such as insufficient error prevention, lack of shortcuts, and limited customization options, affecting the efficiency and effectiveness of user interactions. Despite these challenges, each application exhibited unique strengths, suggesting that while functional, significant enhancements are needed to fully support user satisfaction and ethical usage. The insights of this study can guide organizations in designing GenAI systems that are not only user-friendly but also ethically sound. Full article

Introduction: Prostate cancer is one of the most common neoplasia in men, and its clinical evolution is highly influenced by psycho-emotional factors, especially in elderly patients. Comorbidities, the perception of one’s identity and its impact on life quality become relevant variables in the therapeutic decision. Sexual dysfunction after treatment along with decreased libido, erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory dysfunction are significant problems in patients with prostate cancer. Case presentation: The present study presents the oncological evolution of an elderly patient with a dual diagnosis, prostate adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell carcinoma, who faced a significant amount of medical and psychological challenges. Reluctance to hormone therapy was closely linked to the fear of sexual dysfunction, a very common reaction in elderly men concerned with maintaining autonomy and intimacy. The peculiarity of the case consists in the interaction between the evolution of the disease, the therapeutic decisions and the psychological impact on the patient. Discussion: Androgen deprivation therapy negatively influences multiple aspects of sexual function, significantly impairing the life quality of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer. In this context, therapy through acceptance and commitment is the appropriate one, its main purpose being to change the patient’s relationship with suffering—from struggle and rejection to active acceptance and value of the present. The intervention of the psychologist or the psychotherapist is essential in decision-making counseling, using coping techniques, the clarification of personal values and the involvement of the family in the decision-making process. Oncological psychology helps the patient redefine their life goals and priorities, not just to choose a treatment. Conclusions: Sexuality and psychological health are deeply affected by prostate cancer. Psychological flexibility and emotional support can mitigate this negative impact. The integration of therapy through acceptance and commitment in the rehabilitation after treatment increases effectiveness and patient satisfaction. Full article

This study investigated the immediate and cumulative effects of attentional focus (external vs. internal), practice autonomy, and their combination on soccer penalty kick performance. Methods: Ninety physically active male university students (average age 22.8 ± 1.5 years) were selected from a pool of 330 students who completed a 60 h university soccer course. Participants were randomly divided into six groups: external focus with target choice (EF-TC), external focus without target choice (EF-NTC), internal focus with target choice (IF-TC), internal focus without target choice (IF-NTC), autonomy support (AS), and a control group (C). Results: The EF-TC group demonstrated significantly higher accuracy than the IF-TC, IF-NTC, and C groups while performing comparably to the EF-NTC and AS groups in between-group analyses. Notably, the EF-NTC group showed the largest within-group improvement from pre-test to acquisition. Conclusions: The findings indicate that combining attentional focus with practice autonomy enhances the accuracy of penalty kicks, emphasizing the potential of tailored training methods for improving penalty kick performance in soccer. The intersection of autism and motherhood/parenthood remains largely underexplored, particularly within the Spanish context. Autistic mothers and birthing parents are often silenced, with limited representation and scarce accessible information, contributing to a broader social and institutional unawareness. This study explores the postpartum experiences of autistic and non-autistic mothers during the first two years following childbirth. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with six autistic and six non-autistic mothers and analyzed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Three key themes were constructed, as follows: (1) Ups and Downs: Navigating Emotional and Sensory Experiences, highlighting the intense sensory and emotional load of early motherhood; (2) Lack of Information and Support: The Root of Increased Vulnerability, addressing gaps in institutional support and knowledge; and (3) The Social Dimensions of Early Postpartum: Tensions and Expectations, focusing on family and societal pressures as well as identity struggles. While experiences overlapped in several areas, two tentative distinctions were observed, as follows: autistic mothers appeared to favor self-guided strategies (e.g., books, personal guidelines), whereas non-autistic mothers relied more on professional guidance; additionally, autistic mothers expressed a stronger preference for autonomy, while non-autistic mothers often valued companionship. These findings underscore the urgent need for healthcare professionals to receive training on autistic motherhood/parenthood and for the development of tailored postpartum care guidelines to ensure inclusive, responsive support. This article offers a comparative analysis of authoritarian governance in Egypt and Türkiye through the lens of two pivotal state–Islamist alliances: the early partnership and eventual rupture between Gamal Abdel Nasser and the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), and the strategic collaboration followed by confrontation between Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Gülen Movement (GM). Despite operating in different historical and institutional settings—a postcolonial military regime in Egypt and an electoral, hybrid regime in Türkiye—both leaders allied with influential religious actors during moments of transition to gain popular support and dismantle entrenched power structures. These alliances were instrumental and temporary: once religious movements developed autonomous influence, they were recast as threats and suppressed through legal, institutional, and religious mechanisms. This study traces how religious institutions like Egypt’s al-Azhar and Türkiye’s Diyanet were co-opted to delegitimize these former allies and justify state repression. While the MB pursued overt political goals and the GM functioned through civic and technocratic channels, both were ultimately excluded from the political order once they had been considered as threats to the central authority of the regime. This comparison underscores the strategic use of religion in authoritarian statecraft and the enduring tension between religious autonomy and centralized political control in Muslim-majority polities. Artificial intelligence (AI) enhances anesthesiology by introducing adaptive systems that improve clinical precision, safety, and responsiveness. This review examines the integration of AI in anesthetic practice, with a focus on closed-loop systems that exemplify autonomous control. These platforms integrate continuous physiologic inputs, such as BIS, EEG, heart rate, and blood pressure, to titrate anesthetic agents in real time, providing more consistent and responsive management than manual methods. Predictive algorithms reduce intraoperative hypotension by up to 40%, and systems such as McSleepy demonstrate greater accuracy in maintaining anesthetic depth and shortening recovery times. In critical care, AI supports sedation management, reduces clinician cognitive load, and standardizes care delivery during high-acuity procedures. The review also addresses the ethical, legal, and logistical challenges to widespread adoption of AI. Key concerns include algorithmic bias, explainability, and accountability for machine-generated decisions and disparities in access due to infrastructure demands. Regulatory frameworks, such as HIPAA and GDPR, are discussed in the context of securing patient data and ensuring its ethical deployment. Additionally, AI may play a transformative role in global health through remote anesthesia delivery and telemonitoring, helping address anesthesiologist shortages in resource-limited settings. Ultimately, AI-guided closed-loop systems do not replace clinicians; instead, they extend their capacity to deliver safe, responsive, and personalized anesthesia. These technologies signal a shift toward robotic anesthesia, where machine autonomy complements human oversight. Continued interdisciplinary development and rigorous clinical validation will determine how AI integrates into both operating rooms and intensive care units. Full article

Midwifery Leadership in a Changing World—Why Is This So Challenging? A Reflective Commentary

Background: Midwifery leadership is central to delivering safe, high-quality maternity care. Yet despite sustained investment in leadership development and governance frameworks, UK national reviews consistently identify leadership as a weakness. Understanding why this persists is vital to achieving meaningful improvement. Objective: This paper offers a reflective commentary on the challenges of midwifery leadership in the UK, drawing on national evidence, leadership theory, and professional experience. Methods: A reflective commentary approach was adopted, informed by over 30 years of practice across clinical, academic, and national improvement roles. The discussion integrates insights from national maternity inquiries, academic literature, international comparisons, and leadership theories including compassionate, courageous, and adaptive leadership. Findings: Structural and cultural barriers—including workforce shortages, rising clinical complexity, tensions between midwifery- and medically led models of care, and punitive governance systems—limit the effectiveness of midwifery leadership. These conditions erode psychological safety, fuel attrition, and constrain succession planning. Reflection on professional experience highlights the impact of these dynamics on leaders’ ability to act with confidence and influence. Evidence also points to the value of relational, values-based behaviours—compassion, courage, adaptability, and systems thinking—in enhancing resilience and outcomes. International examples show that supportive policy environments and greater autonomy enable midwifery leadership to thrive. Conclusions: Midwifery leadership requires both individual capability and structural support. Practical priorities include dismantling punitive cultures, embedding Safety-II approaches, investing in leadership development, and enabling professional autonomy. Without such systemic reform, the ambitions of the NHS Long Term Plan will remain at risk, regardless of individual leaders’ skills. Full article

Caregiver self-regulation may be a critical component of caregivers’ effective delivery of caregiver-mediated interventions (CMIs). CMIs are a highly evidence-based group of interventions that target a broad range of challenges, including social communication, emotion regulation, and externalizing behaviors, for autistic and neurotypical children. CMIs teach caregivers to be “coaches” to help their children learn and practice skills in daily life. However, being a good “coach” likely requires caregivers to optimally self-regulate their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors when working with their children in moments that are often emotionally heightened. Caregiver self-regulation is a set of skills that promote parenting autonomy and confidence: self-sufficiency, self-efficacy, self-management, personal agency, and problem solving. This conceptual paper will briefly discuss the literature on the role of caregiver self-regulation in CMIs and argue that future implementation research on CMIs should measure caregiver self-regulation because, in line with recent expansion of the theory of planned behavior, caregiver self-regulation may predict more effective implementation of CMIs. We also argue, in line with CFIR 2.0, that supporting caregiver self-regulation could ultimately improve the implementation of CMIs with regard to each implementation outcome in the Implementation Outcomes Framework. For example, enhancing caregiver self-regulation may improve CMI appropriateness (by increasing alignment with each caregiver’s values and culture), adoption (by increasing engagement to finish the full CMI protocol), and even CMI sustainability (by increasing caregivers’ ability to problem-solve and generalize to new child challenges independently, freeing up provider time to work with new caregivers and allowing the agency to provide the CMI for a reduced relative cost). Should future research demonstrate that caregiver self-regulation is an implementation determinant, future implementation strategies may need to include support for caregiver self-regulation, because it may explain or enhance the implementation of CMIs across early intervention and community mental health systems. Assessing teaching behavior is essential for improving instructional quality, particularly in Physical Education, where classroom interactions are fast-paced and complex. Traditional evaluation methods such as questionnaires, expert observations, and manual discourse analysis are often limited by subjectivity, high labor costs, and poor scalability. These challenges underscore the need for automated, objective tools to support pedagogical assessment. This study explores and compares the use of Transformer-based language models for the automatic classification of teaching behaviors from real classroom transcriptions. A dataset of over 1300 utterances was compiled and annotated according to the teaching styles proposed in the circumplex approach (Autonomy Support, Structure, Control, and Chaos), along with an additional category for messages in which no style could be identified (Unidentified Style). To address class imbalance and enhance linguistic variability, data augmentation techniques were applied. Eight pretrained BERT-based Transformer architectures were evaluated, including several pretraining strategies and architectural structures. BETO achieved the highest performance, with an accuracy of 0.78, a macro-averaged F1-score of 0.72, and a weighted F1-score of 0.77. It showed strength in identifying challenging utterances labeled as Chaos and Autonomy Support. Furthermore, other BERT-based models purely trained with a Spanish text corpus like DistilBERT also present competitive performance, achieving accuracy metrics over 0.73 and and F1-score of 0.68. These results demonstrate the potential of leveraging Transformer-based models for objective and scalable teacher behavior classification. The findings support the feasibility of leveraging pretrained language models to develop scalable, AI-driven systems for classroom behavior classification and pedagogical feedback. Full article

Moving Motivation: A Mixed-Methods Study of Service Learning to Promote Physical Activity in Under-Resourced Youth

Guided by self-determination theory (SDT), this study aimed to examine the impact of All Stars Moving Together (ASMT), an 8-week school–university service learning program, on elementary children’s physical activity (PA), school-time behavior, and motivation. A concurrent theory-based mixed-methods study with 21 fourth graders from an under-resourced community (age 9–10) wore Moki PA trackers to capture step count and minutes of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) during school-time. Linear and generalized mixed-effects models examined school-day type on PA and benchmarks for meeting school-based PA (3000 steps; 20 min of MVPA). Self-efficacy and enjoyment were assessed using pictorial scales, and the focus groups explored program experiences thematically using the SDT framework. School day type showed significant main effects for steps (F (5, 642) = 170, p < 0.001) and MVPA (F (5, 581) = 105, p < 0.001), where school days with ASMT added an average of 2000–2400 steps and 10–12 min of MVPA compared to school days with no PA. Enjoyment of PA significantly increased (p = 0.006, d = 0.75). Thematic analysis revealed relatedness (support from peers, college students), competence (self-efficacy, positive feelings, perceived motor competence improvements), and autonomy through preferences and self-regulation of PA. ASMT significantly increased school-time PA and children’s enjoyment while fostering competence and relatedness among elementary children. Full article

This study examines the impact of Environmentally Specific Servant Leadership (ESSL) on employees’ pro-environmental behavior (PEB) by proposing a serial mediation model that incorporates green psychological empowerment and green creativity as central mechanisms. Guided by social exchange theory (SET), survey data from managers in Saudi Arabia were analyzed using PROCESS Model 6 with bootstrapping to test direct, indirect, and serial mediation effects. The results show that ESSL has a significant positive influence on PEB, with both psychological empowerment and green creativity acting as partial mediators. Moreover, the serial mediation analysis confirms that empowerment enhances creativity, which in turn drives employees’ pro-environmental actions. The findings support the social exchange theory, SET, in the contextual environmental settings of the rapidly developing economy of Saudi Arabia. These findings highlight the critical role of psychological empowerment and creativity in translating leadership values into sustainable behaviors. Practically, the study suggests that organizations can advance sustainability goals by fostering servant leadership practices, empowering employees with autonomy and resources, and encouraging innovative solutions for environmental challenges. Within the context of Saudi Vision 2030, the findings provide valuable insights for aligning leadership development with national sustainability objectives. Full article
