Digital competence refers to the integration of digital technology in teaching and learning, as outlined in the national curriculum of Estonia for upper secondary schools. This study presents original research findings on Estonian science teachers’ use of digital tools and materials, their digital competence, and the main benefits and challenges they face. The findings emphasize the need for continued professional development, accessible digital resources, and equitable digital infrastructure to maintain Estonia’s leadership in digital science education. A survey of 58 secondary school science teachers revealed that computers (desktops, laptops, and tablets) are the primary digital tools used. The article explores digital literacy advancements in secondary science education, research methodologies used to assess digital tool usage, and key findings from recent studies. However, challenges such as digital equity, technological barriers, and digital fatigue persist. Additionally, discrepancies were found in teachers’ responses regarding digital tool effectiveness, implementation strategies, and perceived barriers. While some teachers reported a successful integration and improved student outcomes, others highlighted difficulties in aligning digital resources with curriculum requirements and pedagogical approaches. Ensemble-Based Knowledge Distillation for Identification of Childhood Pneumonia

Childhood pneumonia remains a key cause of global morbidity and mortality, highlighting the need for accurate and efficient diagnostic tools. Ensemble methods have proven to be among the most successful approaches for identifying childhood pneumonia from chest X-ray images. However, deploying large, complex convolutional neural network models in resource-constrained environments presents challenges due to their high computational demands. Therefore, we propose a novel ensemble-based knowledge distillation method for identifying childhood pneumonia from X-ray images, which utilizes an ensemble of classification models to distill the knowledge to a more efficient student model. Experiments conducted on a chest X-ray dataset show that the distilled student model achieves comparable (statistically not significantly different) predictive performance to that of the Stochastic Gradient with Warm Restarts ensemble method (F1-score on average 0.95 vs. 0.96, respectively), while significantly reducing inference time and decreasing FLOPs by a factor of 6.5. Based on the obtained results, the proposed method highlights the potential of knowledge distillation to enhance the efficiency of complex methods, making them more suitable for utilization in environments with limited computational resources. Self-regulated learning (SRL) has been widely recognized as a critical skill for academic success in online and blended learning contexts. However, many students experience difficulty in effectively applying SRL strategies in the absence of structured instructional guidance. To address this challenge, this study developed and implemented a learning management system integrated with SRL support (SRL-LMS), specifically designed for the online component of a blended learning course. The SRL-LMS consisted of two sections: a conventional course content section and a SRL training section designed to support students in applying SRL strategies. A quasi-experimental design was adopted with 69 college students assigned to either an experimental group, with access to both course and SRL sections, or a control group, which accessed only the course section. Results indicated that students in the experimental group reported higher levels of self-regulation and showed more frequent and diverse application of SRL strategies compared to the control group. In terms of academic performance, the experimental group performed significantly better than the control group on the first exam, though no significant difference was observed on the second exam. These results highlight the effectiveness of structured SRL interventions within digital learning platforms for improving students’ self-regulatory behaviors. Future implementations should address cognitive load and incorporate strategic approaches to sustain student motivation. This study advances current SRL intervention designs and offers valuable insights for educators and instructional designers aiming to integrate targeted SRL supports in online and blended learning environments. The role of emotional intelligence (EI) in the academic context has been steadily established, together with its impact on students’ academic achievement, well-being, and professional success. Therefore, this study examined the development of a key EI ability—emotional understanding—throughout secondary school and explored its impact on students’ academic achievement (maternal language and mathematics) at the end of this cycle, using the Vocabulary of Emotions Test. A total of 222 students were followed over the entire 3-year secondary cycle, using a three-wave longitudinal design spanning from 10th to 12th grade. At the first wave, participants were aged between 14 and 18 years (M = 15.4; SD = 0.63), with 58.6% being female. Overall, the results of Latent Growth Curve modeling indicated that students’ emotional understanding increased over the secondary school cycle. While student’s gender predicted the emotional understanding change patterns throughout secondary school, student’s GPA in 10th grade did not. Moreover, the initial levels of ability-based emotional understanding predicted students’ achievement in maternal language at the end of the cycle. Our findings offer valuable insights into how EI skills can contribute to academic endeavors in late adolescence and will explore their impact on educational settings. Full article

Providing inclusive education and engaging all students in reading and writing activities presents an ongoing challenge for teachers, not necessarily resolved by implementing digital technology. This study addresses the need to better understand teacher competencies within the digitally infused classroom, specifically in relation to inclusive education and reading and writing practices. The study investigates the competencies and supportive strategies of middle school teachers who perceive themselves as successful in this area. The study employs the Delphi technique, using iterative surveys through which these teachers describe and rate aspects of their competencies and strategies. The results are analyzed through a modified version of the Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, with particular attention to how teachers support students using their content knowledge and digital competency. Findings reveal a range of strategies and competency aspects related to both proactive accessibility and reactive individualization, using a variety of digital tools and text modalities. The teachers describe a dual orientation in their ability to curiously explore digital tools while simultaneously being able to critically appraise their usefulness. The findings contribute insights on what can support teachers when collaboratively developing knowledge of local practices and their agency in relation to available digital tools. Full article

Improving curriculum structure is critical for enhancing student success and on-time graduation, yet few methods exist to evaluate how prerequisite paths shape student progression and graduation outcomes. This study proposes a data-driven, graph-based framework that integrates course prerequisite networks with student performance data to systematically analyze curricular structure and student outcomes. We identify high-risk courses by jointly modeling their structural importance and pass rates, and quantify the time and survivability of different prerequisite paths using probabilistic models. Additionally, we introduced grade transition patterns to capture more nuanced transitions in student performance and pinpoint bottlenecks along prerequisite paths. Applying the model on four science and engineering majors from a public institution, the results not only identify high-risk courses often missed in conventional analyses, but also reveal path-level disparities and structural bottlenecks that affect student progression and time to graduation. For example, in the Computer Science major, we identified that the architecture and operating systems pathway is more challenging than the software engineering pathway. A closer examination of the course pairs along this trajectory revealed that the difficulty stems from a significant drop in student performance between a prerequisite–successor course pairs.This type of analysis fills a gap in conventional curriculum studies, which often overlook path-level dynamics, and offers actionable insights for educators a to identify high risk curricular components. Background/Objectives: This study aims to uncover the variables related to the success of the intervention. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent joint replacement surgery utilizing a customized alloplastic system between 2018 and 2023, comprising subjects with complete records for both the planning and follow-up phases. The Student’s t-test was applied with a significance threshold of p < 0.05. Results: Forty-eight subjects were admitted for initial analysis, and 31 subjects were evaluated with a minimum follow-up of 1 year and a maximum of 7 years, with a mean age of 36.37 ± 15.53. The TMJ diagnosis was mainly with degenerative TMJ disease, followed by ankylosis and craniofacial syndromes, and an average of 2.1 ± 1.2 previous surgeries were noted. Degenerative joint disease correlated with increased pain (p < 0.0001) and a higher prevalence of prior joint surgery (p < 0.0001). Thirty-one subjects were followed up with 47 prostheses installed; 74.4% underwent complementary surgery with other facial osteotomies. Significant improvements (p < 0.0001) were observed when comparing pain levels pre- and postoperatively, with a decrease from 5.5 (±2.3) to 2.2 (±0.4). Concerning the interincisal opening, there was a significant increase (p < 0001) from 25.85 (±10.2) mm to 35.93 (±4.2) mm in mouth opening. TMJ replacement treatment is efficient and effective, demonstrating stability in follow-up assessments for up to 7 years. Conclusions: The indications for replacement are diverse and may benefit patients who have not yet progressed to end-stage TMJ disease. Full article

Modern Western societies are “aging” at a very high rate, and more and more people require assistance and care. Old age has different faces, which is due to genetic conditions, as well as the different contexts and lifestyles of people. To ensure good adaptation of seniors, it is important to determine the conditions for “successful aging”. Therefore, the purpose of the conducted study was to determine the importance of selected predictors, including the level of religiosity, assessment of health, and the intensity of motivational needs of seniors—students of the University of the Third Age—for the level of their well-being. A total of 115 people were surveyed, including 93 women and 21 men who were students in the first year of the Third Age University at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow. The surveyed seniors represented an autonomous type of religiosity, a high level of realization of the needs of self-determination, namely autonomy and competence, declared an average assessment of the state of their health, and revealed an increased level of eudaimonic well-being. Predictors of the level of well-being of the surveyed seniors turned out to be the variables religious experience, need for autonomy and competence, and health status, as assessed by the seniors. In the increasingly competitive landscape of higher education, student satisfaction and loyalty are recognized as essential components for institutional sustainability and long-term success. This study aims to examine the interrelationships between service quality, technological innovation, student satisfaction, and student loyalty within higher education institutions in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Grounded in relationship marketing theory and the expectancy–disconfirmation paradigm, the research develops and tests a structural model that investigates the impact of perceived service quality on technological innovation, student satisfaction, and loyalty. The data were collected from 448 undergraduate students studying in the faculties of education at five leading private universities in TRNC, selected based on their international academic rankings. The analysis, conducted using structural equation modelling (SEM), reveals that service quality significantly and directly influences technological innovation, student satisfaction, and student loyalty. Additionally, technological innovation has a positive but comparatively weaker effect on student loyalty. Among the variables, student satisfaction emerges as the strongest determinant of loyalty, serving as a key mediator in the relationship between service quality and loyalty. This research contributes to the higher education literature by extending the traditional service quality–loyalty framework with the inclusion of technological innovation. The findings offer practical insights for university administrators, emphasizing the importance of delivering high-quality educational services combined with continuous digital innovation to enhance the student experience and foster long-term student commitment. Nursing students often face emotional challenges related to death and dying, affecting their psychological well-being, emotional intelligence, and academic success. Cultural and educational factors may influence how they experience and manage these stressors. This study aimed to compare fear of death, emotional intelligence, coping with death, and academic burnout among second-year nursing students in Spain and Portugal to identify cross-cultural differences. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 174 second-year nursing students from the University of Extremadura (Spain) and the University of Évora (Portugal) during the 2023/2024 academic year. The instruments used included the Collett–Lester Brief Fear of Death Scale, the Trait Meta-Mood Scale—24 ítems, the Bugen’s Coping with Death Scale, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory—Student Survey. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and group comparisons were performed using independent samples t-tests and Welch’s t-tests, depending on variance homogeneity. A two-way ANOVA was also conducted to explore interactions between gender and nationality. The Spanish sample comprised 86 women and 21 men, and the Portuguese sample included 58 women and 9 men. The mean age across the sample was 21.5 years (SD = 4.15). No significant differences were observed in fear of death or emotional intelligence between the two groups. However, Portuguese students showed significantly better coping with death, but also higher academic burnout and cynicism. Spanish students reported greater perceived efficacy. Although emotional intelligence and death anxiety were similar, Portuguese students demonstrated stronger coping skills but experienced more burnout. This suggests that coping alone may not buffer academic stress, emphasizing the need for culturally tailored interventions to enhance emotional readiness and reduce burnout. Full article

A primary expectation of college is that students in all majors and disciplines will learn content, skills, and knowledge that support individual growth, job placement, or continued academic endeavors. In short, being a student implies an expectation to learn. Effective learning directly impacts student academic success, and this success has downstream effects on student retention and graduation rates. However, the process of learning is often taken for granted, and, too often, student learning is not successful because students have not received any guidance on the methods of effective learning. Across higher education, students are often left on their own to learn about learning, and their improvised methods frequently involve ineffective techniques such as cramming for exams or rereading assigned materials without deeper engagement. To counter such observations, the University of Iowa implemented a campus-wide learning framework, Learning at Iowa. The initiative is grounded in empirically validated practices from the cognitive and learning sciences, which have been organized around the Three Ms: mindset, metacognition, and memory. This article briefly reviews the relevant literature supporting each of the Three Ms and then discusses the implementation of the framework with students, student-facing staff, and instructors and how the framework supports effective educational practices. Indigenous students remain significantly underrepresented in medical education, contributing to persistent health inequities in their communities. Systemic barriers, including cultural isolation, inadequate resources, and biased curricula, hinder their success. But what if generative artificial intelligence (GAI) could be the game-changer? This scoping review explores the potential of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) in making medical education more inclusive and supportive for Indigenous students through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature. From AI-powered engagement platforms to personalised learning systems and immersive simulations, GAI can be harnessed to bridge the gap. While GAI holds promise, challenges like biased datasets and limited access to technology must be addressed. To unlock GAI’s potential, we recommend faculty development, expansion of digital infrastructure, and Indigenous-led AI design. By carefully harnessing GAI, medical schools can take a crucial step towards creating a more diverse and equitable healthcare workforce, ultimately improving health outcomes for Indigenous communities. This study examines the availability and outcomes of Advanced Placement (AP) courses in secondary schools in Georgia (USA) and South Carolina (USA), focusing on how school locale (rurality) and demographic composition influence AP availability and student achievement. The authors analyzed population-level school data from the 2021–22 academic year using a two-step quantitative approach. A zero-inflated negative binomial regression model (ZINB) was employed to assess AP course participation and AP exam performance while addressing overdispersion and excess zeros in the data. Key predictors included school locale (rural versus nonrural), state (Georgia versus South Carolina), and minoritized-majority status. This study finds that rural schools and those where minoritized students make up the majority (i.e., fewer than 50% White students) are significantly less likely to offer AP courses or have any students participate in AP exams. Moreover, these schools had a significantly lower success rate; for example, rural schools were 59% less likely to have students with scores above three. The findings indicate that gaps in access to advanced curriculum may exacerbate existing college and career readiness disparities. Moreover, this study confirms that previous research using sampled datasets underestimates the disparity of AP access. Full article

This study investigates the impact of digital technology propagation, specifically artificial intelligence (AI) and the TikTok application, on enhancing student entrepreneurs’ entrepreneurial knowledge, business experience, and the performance of their ventures. This research employs a mixed-methods design, combining qualitative and quantitative elements, with the quantitative aspect analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM–PLS) and the qualitative aspect analyzed through in-depth interviews with student entrepreneurs. The survey included participation from 125 students, with three additional students serving as key informants. Research findings suggest that AI directly enhances entrepreneurial knowledge and business performance, whereas TikTok indirectly influences business success by affecting the acquisition of entrepreneurial learning. The utilization of AI has a substantial direct impact on entrepreneurial expertise and business performance. In contrast, the utilization of TikTok has a moderate influence on entrepreneurial knowledge, which in turn mediates its effect on entrepreneurial success. Offer practical implications for higher education institutions to integrate AI-driven analytics and social media marketing strategies into entrepreneurship curricula. Future research should investigate the regulatory framework, long-term implications, and the inclusion of other digital platforms to refine the digital transformation of entrepreneurship education further. Nursing students encounter several challenges as they progress through their educational journey, particularly in integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications using simulation-based learning (SBL). This study aimed to comprehensively assess the effects of SBL on nursing competence, self-efficacy, and overall satisfaction among undergraduate nursing students at Tabuk University, Saudi Arabia. A total of 136 students participated in this study, which employed a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design including a quantitative cross-sectional survey complemented by qualitative interviews to capture a holistic view of their experiences with SBL. The findings revealed high levels of satisfaction and self-confidence among students participating in SBL, indicating its effectiveness as an academic tool for enhancing learning outcomes. Significant positive correlations were observed among nursing competence, satisfaction, and self-confidence in the SBL context. This suggests that successful engagement in this educational approach can lead to improved clinical skills and preparedness for real-world challenges. The qualitative findings further illuminated the emotional and cognitive engagement experienced by students during the SBL sessions. The participants emphasized the importance of skill mastery in a safe and controlled environment and the positive impact of advanced technologies, such as virtual simulations, on their learning experiences.
