This article highlights the importance of the discourse on sound media for the development of so-called “cosmic music” in Germany in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Already the slogan of the Ohr record label “Macht das Ohr auf” (Open up your ears) testifies to the awareness of Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser, the founder of the label, and the bands gathered around him about the impact of media on everyday practices and the reflection on the physiological effect of sound. In particular, this article focuses on the figure of Kaiser and his Buch der neuen Pop-Musik (1969), where the author stresses the emancipatory potential of popular music starting from the considerations put forward by H. Marcuse, T. W. Adorno and M. McLuhan. On the basis of these suggestions, Kaiser envisages the possibility of a ‘functional transformation’ of sound media, placing himself in a long German tradition of reflections on the relationship between man and technology, in which it is possible to identify a line that proposes a progressive and socialist use of technical reproduction apparatuses (Benjamin, Brecht, Enzensberger) and another line that questions the connection between media and mystical experience (Mann, Hesse). In this sense, this paper explores the intellectual and literary context of the media anthropology on which the sound aesthetics of German cosmic music was founded. Full article

Recent advances in passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) have markedly improved the ability to study marine soundscapes by enabling long-term, non-invasive monitoring of biological sounds across large spatial and temporal scales. Among aquatic organisms, fish are primary contributors to biophony, producing sounds associated with feeding, reproduction, and social behavior. However, the majority of previous research has focused on individual vocalizations, with limited attention to collective acoustic phenomena such as fish choruses. This study quantitatively analyzes choruses produced by the small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis), an ecologically and commercially important species in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. Using power spectral density (PSD) analysis, we examined long-term underwater recordings from a sea cage containing approximately 2000 adult small yellow croakers. The choruses were centered around ~600 Hz and exhibited sound pressure levels 15–20 dB higher at night than during the day. These findings highlight the ecological relevance of fish choruses and support their potential use as indicators of biological activity. This study lays the foundation for incorporating fish choruses into soundscape-based PAM frameworks to enhance biodiversity and habitat monitoring. Full article

This article highlights the importance of evaluating the morphological characteristics of female dogs during breeding soundness examinations (BSEs) to assess their reproductive potential and ensure the health of future offspring. Key traits considered in this evaluation include body type, body condition score, skull size and shape, mammary gland conformation, and coat quality. Each of these factors plays a significant role in the health and fertility of breeding females. For example, deviations from breed standards in body size can lead to complications during pregnancy and whelping, while an inappropriate body condition score may disrupt hormonal balance and reproductive cycles. This review also addresses concerns related to brachycephalic breeds, whose conformation can contribute to respiratory and reproductive issues. Additionally, assessing vertebral and pelvic conformation is crucial to prevent dystocia and other complications during delivery. By systematically evaluating these morphological traits, veterinarians can promote ethical breeding practices that prioritize the welfare and genetic health of both breeding females and their puppies. Therefore, integrating comprehensive morphological evaluations into BSEs is essential for responsible dog breeding management, ultimately supporting better reproductive outcomes and healthier future generations. As immersive audio is gaining popularity, the perceptual aspects of spatial sound reproduction become relevant. The authors investigate a measure related to spatial resolution, the Minimum Audible Angle (MAA), which is understudied in the context of Ambisonics. This study examines MAA thresholds in the horizontal plane in three ambisonic decoders—the Sample Ambisonic Decoder (SAD), Energy-Preserving Ambisonic Decoder (EPAD), and All-Round Ambisonic Decoder (AllRAD). The results demonstrate that the decoder type influences spatial resolution, with the EPAD exhibiting superior performance in MAA thresholds (1.24 at 0 azimuth) compared to the SAD and AllRAD. These differences reflect the discrepancies in the decoders’ energy vector distribution and angular error. The MAA values remain consistent between decoders up to 30 azimuth but diverge significantly beyond this range, especially in the 60135 region corresponding to the cone of confusion. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for spatial audio applications based on ambisonic technology. Full article

Arundo donax (L.) is a perennial monocot (Poaceae) native to Asia, which has spread throughout the Mediterranean region. Its hollow stem has been used for millennia to produce reeds, thin strips whose vibration is modulated by musical instruments such as oboes and saxophones. Significant differences in sound quality occur among reeds of different provenances, despite the extreme genetic homogeneity of A. donax, mainly due to its clonal mode of reproduction. Reed samples from three different provenances and different sound qualities were analyzed. Samples of dissected internodes of selected brands were examined to determine material density and mechanical properties along the stem radius. These characteristics vary between the brands and change with the sample thickness (along the radius of the stem) according to a power function. Next, Ashby graphs were used to compare the properties of Arundo reed samples with those of other natural materials. Using Ashby graphs potentially provides indications for producing musical reeds of the desired sound quality. Full article

Impact sound, particularly prevalent indoors, emerges as a major source of annoyance necessitating a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of its implications. This literature review provides a systematic overview of recent research developments in the study of impact sound annoyance, focusing on advances in the assessment of impact sound perception through laboratory listening testing and standardization efforts. This review provides a detailed summary of the listening setup, assessment procedure and key findings of each study. The studied correlations between SNQs and annoyance ratings are summarized and key research challenges are highlighted. Among the studies, considerable research effort has focused on the assessment of walking impact sound and the use of spectrum adaptation terms, albeit with inconsistent outcomes. Comparison with the previous literature also shows the influence of spatial and temporal characteristics of impact sound sources on perceived annoyance, with higher spatial fidelity leading to higher annoyance ratings. Furthermore, it has been shown that the consideration of non-acoustic factors such as noise sensitivity and visual features are important for the assessment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the understanding and assessment of impact sound annoyance and provides information for future research directions and standardization efforts. Traffic safety experiments are often conducted in virtual environments in order to avoid dangerous situations and conduct the experiments more cost-efficiently. This means that attention must be paid to the fidelity of the traffic scenario reproduction, because the pedestrians’ judgments have to be close to reality. To understand behavior in relation to the prevailing audio rendering systems better, a listening test was conducted which focused on perceptual differences between simulation and playback methods. Six vehicle driving-by-scenes were presented using two different simulation methods and three different playback methods, and binaural recordings from the test track acquired during the recordings of the vehicle sound sources for the simulation were additionally incorporated. Each vehicle driving-by-scene was characterized by different vehicle types and different speeds. Participants rated six attributes of the perceptual dimensions: “timbral balance”, “naturalness”, “room-related”, “source localization”, “loudness” and “speed perception”. While the ratings showed a high degree of similarity among the ratings of the sound attributes in the different reproduction systems, there were minor differences in the speed and loudness estimations and the different perceptions of brightness stood out. A comparison of the loudness ratings in the scenes featuring electric and combustion-engine vehicles highlights the issue of reduced detection abilities with regard to the former. Full article

The social complexity hypothesis suggests that complex social interactions drive the evolution of sophisticated communicative signals. While the relationship between social communication and the complexity of sound and color signals has been extensively studied, the correlation between social communication and movement-based visual signal complexity remains underexplored. In this study, we selected the Asian agamid lizard, Phrynocephalus vlangalii, as our model system. Through a combination of controlled experiments, behavioral observations, and signal quantification, we examined the relationship between social communications and variation in movement-based visual signals and tested our social complexity hypothesis. Our experiments revealed that males significantly decreased the tail coil duration during the mating season to deal with high social interaction. Conversely, females significantly increased the tail display duration and variation in mean tail coil amplitude in line with the intensity of parental care, and tail display duration showed a significant and positive correlation with female reproductive investment. These findings suggest that social communication plays an important role in shaping the changes in movement-based visual signals, providing new evidence for the social complexity hypothesis. Purpose: Over the past 40–50 years, demographic shifts and the obesity epidemic have coincided with significant changes in lifestyle habits, including a rise in excessive alcohol consumption. This increase in alcohol intake is a major public health concern due to its far-reaching effects on human health, particularly on metabolic processes and male reproductive function. This narrative review focuses on the role of alcohol consumption in altering metabolism and impairing testicular function, emphasizing the potential damage associated with both acute and chronic alcohol intake. Conclusion: Chronic alcohol consumption has been shown to disrupt liver function, impair lipid metabolism, and dysregulate blood glucose levels, contributing to the development of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and related systemic diseases. In terms of male reproductive health, alcohol can significantly affect testicular function by lowering testosterone levels, reducing sperm quality, and impairing overall fertility. The extent of these effects varies, depending on the frequency, duration, and intensity of alcohol use, with chronic and abusive consumption posing greater risks. The complexity of alcohol’s impact is further compounded by individual variability and the interaction with other lifestyle factors such as diet, stress, and physical activity. Despite growing concern, research on alcohol’s effects remains inconclusive, with significant discrepancies across studies regarding the definition and reporting of alcohol consumption. These inconsistencies highlight the need for more rigorous, methodologically sound research to better understand how alcohol consumption influences metabolic and reproductive health. Ultimately, a clearer understanding is essential for developing targeted public health interventions, particularly in light of rising alcohol use, demographic changes, and the ongoing obesity crisis. Enhancing the acoustical quality in learning environments is necessary, especially for hearing aid (HA) users. When in-field evaluations cannot be performed, virtual reality (VR) can be adopted for acoustical quality assessments of existing and new buildings, contributing to the acquisition of subjective impressions in lab settings. To ensure an accurate spatial reproduction of the sound field in VR for HA users, multi-speaker-based systems can be employed to auralize a given environment. However, most systems require a lot of effort due to cost, size, and construction. This work deals with the validation of a VR-system based on a 16-speaker-array synced with a VR headset, arranged to be easily replicated in small non-anechoic spaces and suitable for HA users. Both objective and subjective validations are performed against a real university lecture room of 800 m3 and with 2.3 s of reverberation time at mid-frequencies. Comparisons of binaural and monoaural room acoustic parameters are performed between measurements in the real lecture room and its lab reproduction. To validate the audiovisual experience, 32 normal-hearing subjects were administered the Igroup Presence Questionnaire (IPQ) on the overall sense of perceived presence. The outcomes confirm that the system is a promising and feasible tool to predict the perceived acoustical quality of a room. Full article

2-Bromopalmitate (2-BP) is a palmitoylation inhibitor that can prevent the binding of palmitic acid to proteins, thereby exhibiting significant effects in promoting inflammation and regulating the immune system. However, limited research has been conducted regarding the direct effects of 2-BP on the animal organism. Therefore, we probed mice injected with 2-BP for altered expression of inflammatory genes, with a focus on demonstrating changes in the intestinal flora as well as damage to the reproductive system. Our findings indicate that 2-BP can induce substantial inflammatory responses in visceral organs and cause testicular dysfunction. The key changes in the gut microbiota were characterized by an abundance of Firmicutes, Clostridiales, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Desulfovibrio, Muribaculaceae, and Alistipes, and their metabolism has been intricately linked to visceral inflammation. Overall, the findings of this study provide a sound scientific basis for understanding the impact of high doses of 2-BP in mammals, while also offering crucial support for the development of preclinical models to suppress palmitoylation. This study investigates a symmetric fractional-order epidemic model with time delays and non-monotonic incidence rates, considering two viral strains. By confirming the existence, uniqueness, and boundedness of the system’s solutions, the research ensures the model’s well-posedness, guaranteeing its mathematical soundness and practical relevance. The study calculates and evaluates the equilibrium points and the basic reproduction numbers R01 and R02 to understand the dynamic behavior of the model under different parameter settings. Through the application of the Lyapunov method, the research examines the asymptotic global stability of the system, determining whether it will converge to a particular equilibrium state over time. Furthermore, Hopf bifurcation theory is employed to investigate potential periodic solutions and bifurcation scenarios, highlighting how the system might shift from stability to periodic oscillations under certain conditions. By utilizing the Adams-Bashforth-Moulton numerical simulation method, the theoretical results are validated, reinforcing the conclusions and demonstrating the model’s applicability in real-world contexts. It emphasizes the importance of fractional-order models in addressing epidemiological issues related to time delays (τ), individual heterogeneity (m, k), and memory effects (θ), offering greater accuracy compared with traditional integer-order models. In summary, this research provides a theoretical foundation and practical insights, enhancing the understanding and management of epidemic dynamics through fractional-order epidemic models. A 24/7 AI sound-based coughing monitoring system was applied in combination with oral fluids (OFs) and bioaerosol (AS)-based screening for respiratory pathogens in a conventional pig nursery. The objective was to assess the additional value of the AI to identify disease patterns in association with molecular diagnostics to gain information on the etiology of respiratory distress in a multimicrobially infected pig population. Respiratory distress was measured 24/7 by the AI and compared to human observations. Screening for swine influenza A virus (swIAV), porcine reproductive and respiratory disease virus (PRRSV), Mycoplasma (M.) hyopneumoniae, Actinobacillus (A.) pleuropneumoniae, and porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) was conducted using qPCR. Except for M. hyopneumoniae, all of the investigated pathogens were detected within the study period. High swIAV-RNA loads in OFs and AS were significantly associated with a decrease in respiratory health, expressed by a respiratory health score calculated by the AI The odds of detecting PRRSV or A. pleuropneumoniae were significantly higher for OFs compared to AS. qPCR examinations of OFs revealed significantly lower Ct-values for swIAV and A. pleuropneumoniae compared to AS. In addition to acting as an early warning system, AI gained respiratory health data combined with laboratory diagnostics, can indicate the etiology of respiratory distress. Full article

Tritrichomonas foetus (T. foetus), the causative agent of bovine trichomoniasis, is an obligate protozoan parasite of the bovine reproductive tract and can be found on the penis, prepuce, and distal urethra of the bull and from the cranial vagina to the oviduct in the infected cow. To date, the microbiome of bulls infected with T. foetus has not been described. The objectives of this study were to (1) describe the preputial and penile microbiome of bulls chronically infected by T. foetus, (2) describe the seminal microbiome of T. foetus-infected bulls, and (3) evaluate different collection devices that could be used for sampling. Eleven bulls naturally infected with T. foetus were utilized for the collection of samples. Samples were obtained during the process of a routine breeding soundness exam utilizing either a dacron swab, pizzle stick, double-guarded swab, or semen collection. The preputial and seminal microbiome of T. foetus-infected bulls was dominated by bacterial members of the phyla Fusobacteriota, Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, Actinobacteria, and Campylobacterota. Semen collection yielded the most microbial diversity; however, there was no significant difference between the four methods (p ≥ 0.05). Friedrich Hölderlin’s late hymns Patmos (first version) and Mnemosyne (early draft) create an intriguing tension between the “solid letter” that must be deciphered faithfully and the evocation of a “sounding script” that, together with an equally enigmatic “echo”, refuses direct hermeneutic understanding. At the point where the reader’s interpretive desire threatens to fail, musical settings like Peter Ruzicka’s MNEMOSYNE: Remembrance and Forgetting can be listened to as an attempt to actualize what Hölderlin’s original writing must leave unrealizable: the presence of real sound. In this audio-hermeneutic transfer, the act of listening opens up possibilities of the audible that are promised by the literary text without being actualized. The present essay interrogates this intermedial translatability between letter and sound by isolating a few selected passages from the facsimile reproduction of Hölderlin’s palimpsestic manuscript of multiple revisions, as provided by the Frankfurter Ausgabe. Mindful of the discontinuities and gaps in the original poems, my own analysis foregrounds its own fragmentary mode of reading Hölderlin’s poetry and listening to Ruzicka’s music. Full article
