Christian Liberation Theology highlights a spirituality that is deeply tied to the fight for socio-political freedom. This perspective argues that spirituality, when practiced as a way of life, is essential for meaningful liberation. It represents a fresh take on Christian faith and discipleship, one that arises from the lived realities of the poor and oppressed. This approach has significantly influenced both Catholic and evangelical communities, blending spiritual and political elements into a unique theological framework. The research underscores that within this context, Liberation Theology redefines faith and spirituality as active, lived experiences that contribute to tangible social change. Spiritual people are not detached or indifferent to the struggles of others. They express their love for God by caring deeply for His creation. Just as God aligns with and supports the oppressed, spiritual individuals take a stand against injustice and those who perpetuate it. In this way, spirituality and the struggle for socio-political justice are inseparably connected to the message of Liberation Theology. The present article intends to refute the erroneous claim that Christian liberation theology is unrelated to spirituality and faith. The article highlights the intrinsic connection between spirituality and faith within this theological framework and subsequently analyzes the spiritual outcomes it produces. Full article

During the COVID-19 pandemic, migrant workers in Singapore endured one of the longest and most stringent periods of confinement globally. Segregationist policies were intensified as the state imposed strict disciplinary regimes over workers’ mobility and everyday lives, framed as public health interventions but functioning also as labor discipline and social control. This study asks: how did migrant workers experience, narrate, and endure life under such conditions of confinement? Drawing on sixteen in-depth interviews with South Asian male construction workers, conducted in dormitories and makeshift worksites, we adopt a grounded theory approach to elicit contextually grounded accounts of life under lockdown. The analysis highlights three interrelated themes: emotional regulation, migrant masculinity and the gendered politics of endurance, and digital connectivity as an affective infrastructure. These practices enabled workers to carve out agentic spaces within structures designed to render them passive. Our findings reveal that even amid fear, surveillance, overcrowding, and economic precarity, workers combined stoicism, transnational kinship ties, religious routines, and solidarity to sustain resilience. While initially guided by Foucauldian notions of surveillance and biopower, the study advances a counter-Foucauldian insight: that institutional control is never total, and migrant narratives of resilience offer nuanced understandings of agency under constrain. Designers working towards social change have often focused on designing discrete solutions to social problems, rather than working within the long-term world-making practices of movements. This paper examines the potential of a more embedded design practice within prefigurative movements, where mutual aid networks, worker cooperatives, and other solidarity economy initiatives are already developing alternative systems in the present. What if we could design everyday tools with these collectives to embody their transformative visions? Yet it can be difficult to design for transformation collaboratively. Collectives include members with diverse visions that can conflict, as well as different ideas about how to create change. To explore these challenges, I discuss a project that guided local prefigurative collectives in articulating and sharing their visions of a future 100 years beyond the fall of capitalism by co-creating an illustrated map. The project achieved the collaborative articulation of transformed futures, and it also initiated a dialogue on how to design for these transformative visions today. Moving forward, the project raises questions about the risks of sharing diverging visions while attempting to build coalitions, as well as the opportunity to clarify where our dreams overlap and diverge, empowering collective members to take non-normative steps with confidence. This study analyses employment in the tourism sector and seeks to identify trends in the evolution of worker profiles and transformation of the structure and working conditions in Portugal’s tourism sector from 2012 to 2022. It aims to understand how profiles, qualifications, and working conditions relate to the spatial distribution among Portuguese tourist regions and the typology and scale of tourism businesses, contributing valuable insights to defining sector strategies. It applies a quantitative approach based on statistical data from the Portuguese Ministry of Labour, Solidarity, and Social Security, disaggregated by the three segments of economic activity in the tourism sector: accommodation and food services, recreational and cultural activities, and transport and logistics. Descriptive statistics, MANOVA, and ANOVA tests analyse differences based on establishment size, tourist regions, and activity segments. The results show significant employment growth, regional variations, high turnover, and an increase in fixed-term contracts. Weak but significant correlations link education, nationality, gender, and working hours, indicating potential inequalities. The study highlights gender and educational differences among workers, as well as disparities related to employment status and nationality. Full article

The objective of this article is to provide a critical analysis of maritime heterotopia as a category for reinterpreting ships, shipwrecks and maritime landscapes between the 16th and 18th centuries. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining history, underwater archaeology, heritage theory and literary analysis, it explores the ways in which maritime spaces, especially ships and shipwrecks, functioned as ‘other spaces’–following Foucault’s concept of heterotopia–in the articulation of imperial projects, power relations, experiences of transit and narratives of memory. A particular focus has been placed on the examination of shipwreck accounts, which are regarded as microhistories of human behaviour in contexts of crisis. These accounts have been shown to offer insights into alternative social structures, dynamics of authority, and manifestations of violence or solidarity. A review of the legal framework and practices related to shipwrecks in the Spanish Carrera de Indias is also undertaken, with particular emphasis on their impact on maritime legislation and international law. This article proposes a reading of maritime heritage as a symbolic and political device in constant dispute, where material remains and associated narratives shape collective memories, geopolitical tensions and new forms of cultural appropriation. Shipwrecks thus become sites of rupture and origin, charged with utopian, dystopian and heterotopic potential. Full article

This study evaluates the validity and factorial structure of the affective job satisfaction scale (BIASJ) among 234 workers from private institutions of social solidarity (IPSS) in Portugal. Emotional job satisfaction, a key marker of psychological well-being, is associated with positive outcomes for employees and organizations. The sample was mainly female, with an average age of 39.15 years (SD = 8.22). The BIASJ and Maslach burnout inventory (MBI) measured job satisfaction and burnout. The BIASJ demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.87, McDonald’s omega = 0.88) and a unidimensional structure. Significant negative correlations with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization supported its criterion validity. The results confirm the BIASJ as a reliable instrument for assessing job satisfaction in IPSS settings in Portugal. Future research should incorporate more diverse, gender-balanced samples and utilize probability sampling to improve generalizability. Full article

Over the last few years, the number of Brazilian immigrants living in Portugal has risen significantly, motivated by expectations of safety, prosperity, and professional success. However, the integration into the labor market frequently involves adversities such as professional devaluation, precarious working conditions, and experiences of social exclusion. This qualitative study aims to explore the work experiences of Brazilian immigrants in Portugal, with a special focus on how community support and collective resilience shape their ability to cope with adversity. Based on minority stress theory and intersectionality, we conducted 24 semi-structured interviews with Brazilian immigrants from diverse professional backgrounds. Thematic analysis revealed four main themes: (1) precarious integration into the labor market and underemployment, (2) experiences of xenophobia, racism, and discrimination, (3) mental health challenges and emotional exhaustion, and (4) community support and collective resilience. Participants emphasized the importance of informal solidarity networks to overcome institutional barriers and maintain emotional well-being. These results suggest that resilience is not only an individual resource, but a relational process rooted in everyday acts of care and connection. The study highlights the protective role of community in contexts of structural vulnerability and contributes to current discussions on migrant integration and well-being. Full article

Global efforts to eradicate smallpox—an Orthopoxvirus infection—began in the mid-20th century, with the last naturally occurring case reported in 1977. This was achieved through global solidarity efforts that expanded the smallpox eradication vaccination program. Approximately 50 years following the cessation of mass smallpox vaccination and in the absence of access to a sustainable boosting program, the population immunologically naïve to Orthopoxviruses has increased significantly. With increasing global movements and travels, we argue that the emergence of two back-to-back yet distinct mpox epidemics in the 21st century is a sign of humanity’s lost herd immunity to Orthopoxviruses. This paper examines how social movements influenced Greece’s macroeconomic adjustment during the financial crisis and austerity period (2010–2015). The purpose is to identify the channels through which mobilizations—anti-austerity protests, general strikes, youth actions, and solidarity networks—interacted with the economy. The main hypothesis is that social protest operates as an economic force via three mechanisms: expectations (shifts in household and firm beliefs affecting consumption, confidence, and investment), disruption (coordination and operating costs from strikes and stoppages affecting output and employment), and institutional feedback (policy sequencing and credibility under EU–IMF conditionality shaping behavior). Using a theoretical, literature-based methodology—a structured narrative review of peer-reviewed studies, policy documents, and historical syntheses—we map these mechanisms onto outcomes (GDP, unemployment, investment, consumer confidence). The findings support the hypothesis: expectations and feedback dominate the transmission to investment and confidence, while repeated disruption is most salient for labor-market dynamics; solidarity infrastructures cushion social costs but have ambiguous aggregate effects. The scope is interpretive and Greece-specific, yielding testable propositions for future causal work. Limitations follow from the design: the study does not estimate effect sizes or establish causality; conclusions are analytically persuasive rather than statistically demonstrative. The contribution is a mechanism map that integrates social-movement theory with crisis political economy and clarifies where empirical identification should focus. Full article

From Solidarity to Exclusion: The ‘Safe Country’ Concept in UK Asylum Law and the Irony of Borders

This article argues that the asylum policy and legislative changes introduced by the UK government in the years 2022–2024 altered the original meaning of the concept ‘safe country’ as understood in international and EU law. The UK modified this concept, which from a solidarity concept became a means of exclusion, and which negatively affects the lives and rights of people seeking asylum in the UK. Using a doctrinal approach, the first part of this article sets the legal and historical context of the concept ‘safe country’. Departing from the analysis of the Refugee Convention, the article discusses how this mechanism was used by the EU legislation. From an idea of solidarity among EU Member States, it shifted from responsibility-sharing to burden-sharing while still allowing some guarantees to people seeking asylum. Using content analysis, the second part of this article evaluates the legal requirements set by the UK legislation together with implications of applying the ‘safe country’ concept to the asylum claims. It argues that, in recent years, the UK Government used the term ‘safe country’ as synonym of two (possibly three) different concepts, such as ‘first safe country’ and ‘safe third country’. It also shifted and pushed its meaning beyond the current commonly agreed interpretation of the term because it eroded the requirement of a link between the person seeking asylum and the ‘safe country’. Thus, the UK legislation deviated even further from the rationale underlying the Refugee Convention, international human rights standards and EU legislation because it passed the obligation to assess asylum claims to states with no link to people seeking asylum and without adequate risk assessment. The final part of this article discusses the limit to this policy and analyses the legal battle between the UK Parliament, the Government’s executive power, the UK Supreme Court and the Belfast High Court, which barred the UK Government from deporting people seeking asylum to a third country. This article concludes that there is some irony in the fact the term ‘safe country’ has been weaponised as a bordering tool by the UK Government, but ‘a border’ between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is limiting the negative effect of the concept ‘safe country’ on the very same people that is attempting to exclude from protection. This paper proposes a methodology for implementing a custom-developed explainability model for credit rating using behavioral data registered during the lifecycle of the borrowing that can replicate the score given by the regulatory model for the solidarity economy in Colombia. The methodology integrates continuous behavioral and financial variables from over 17,000 real credit histories into predictive models based on ridge regression, decision trees, random forests, XGBoost, and LightGBM. The models were trained and evaluated using cross-validation and RMSE metrics. LightGBM emerged as the most accurate model, effectively capturing nonlinear credit behavior patterns. To ensure interpretability, SHAP was used to identify the contribution of each feature to the model predictions. The presented model using LightGBM predicted the credit risk assessment in accordance with the regulatory model used by the Colombian Superintendence of the Solidarity Economy, with a root-mean-square error of 0.272 and an R2 score of 0.99. We propose an alternative framework using explainable machine learning models aligned with the internal ratings-based approach under Basel II. Our model integrates variables collected throughout the borrowing lifecycle, offering a more comprehensive perspective than the regulatory model. While the regulatory framework adjusts itself generically to national regulations, our approach explicitly accounts for borrower-specific dynamics. Full article

Jordan’s aging population faces a critical challenge: a strong cultural preference for aging at home, rooted in Islamic ethics of familial care (birr al-wālidayn), conflicts with housing stock that is largely unsafe and inaccessible. This first national mixed-methods study examines the intersection of home modifications, socio-economic barriers, and cultural constraints to aging in place. Data from 587 surveys and 35 interviews across seven governorates were analyzed using chi-square tests, linear regression, and thematic coding. Results indicate that while physical modifications significantly improve accessibility to key spaces like kitchens and reception areas (majlis) (χ2 = 341.86, p < 0.001), their adoption is severely limited. Socio-economic barriers are paramount, with 34% of households unable to afford the median modification cost of over $1500. Cultural resistance is equally critical; 22% of widows avoid modifications like grab bars to prevent the ‘medicalization’ of their home, prioritizing aesthetic and symbolic integrity over safety. The study reveals a significant gendered decision-making dynamic, with men controlling 72% of structural modifications (β = 0.27, p < 0.001). We conclude that effective policy must integrate universal design with Islamic care ethics. We propose three actionable recommendations: (1) mandating universal design in building codes (aligned with SDG 11), (2) establishing means-tested subsidy programs (aligned with SDG 10), and (3) launching public awareness campaigns co-led by faith leaders to reframe modifications as preserving dignity (karama) (aligned with SDG 3). This approach provides a model for other rapidly aging Middle Eastern societies facing similar cultural-infrastructural tensions. Full article

STEM ideologies provoke environmental destruction from which deaf, disabled, and Indigenous people are uniquely targeted. Our analysis counteracts harms caused by governmental, industrial, and educational agents who weaponize STEM ideologies against downstream people, animals, plants, environments, and biogeochemical entities. We explore two research questions via a theoretical framework about biocultural deaf gains and deaf/Indigenous languacultures to center the arts in STEAM. As a result, we synthesized a conceptual framework called Deaf and Indigenous Curricula and Eco-pedagogies (DICE), which are multimodal, multilingual approaches to STEAM education emphasizing place-based ecology and the arts, including knowledge emanating from Indigenous Deaf Cultures, Indigenous sign languages, and epistemologists who are deaf, disabled, women, and Indigenous (singly or in combination). DICE is designed to reinvigorate communities and ecologies at risk of destruction from colonialism and runnamok capitalism. Within and across Indigenous and Deaf lifeworlds, our model explores: collaboration, mutualism, and symbiosis. These are situated in examples drawn from the research, abductive reasoning, our life histories, and the creative works of Deaf Indigenous scientists and artists. In sum, alongside uprising Indigenous voices, deaf hands shall rise in solidarity to aid Earth’s defense. Full article

The collapsed state structures were unable to care for them, so only various private or church initiatives—such as Gaudopolis, a children’s home set up by the Lutheran pastor Gábor Szehló—provided a means of survival. However, in East-Central Europe—including Hungary, Poland and Romania—where the Soviet Union had a sphere of influence, the emerging Soviet-style system was aimed at the political re-education of society. Ideological goals categorically excluded the possibility of churches being involved in the care and education of youth beyond the existing legal framework. Any person who engaged in such activities was cracked down upon. This study examines the role and responsibility of church persons in the care and upbringing of orphaned children through the fate of the Roman Catholic priest István Regőczi. In the decades of communist dictatorship, István Regőczi repeatedly reorganised orphanages, where he carried out youth education activities based on principles similar to scouting. The values he imparted to the children—such as the Christian religion, family protection, mutual help and social solidarity—were all values of Christian socialism. However, the communist dictatorship—promoting its own political ideology, Marxism—sought to take control of the upbringing and education of children by nationalising all institutions involved in this activity. Anyone who resisted this—as István Regőczi did—was made impossible in the people’s democracy of the 1950s and 1960s, and his child-saving, educating and teaching activities were prevented, even if the courts sentenced him to longer or shorter prison sentences for the crimes of illegal youth organisation, incitement and the abuse of freedom of association. This study, comparing what is described in István Regőczi’s memoirs with the surviving archival sources, shows how during these terrible decades it was possible to save orphaned, needy children and raise them in a Christian spirit, even against the will of the authorities. This article examines shifting practices of commoning among the Jola in the Casamance region of Senegal. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and a theoretical background of New Institutional Political Ecology as well as commoning, it explores how a collective social security system formed through collectively labored rice fields is increasingly strained by socio-economic pressures and environmental change. While migration due to environmental change is often cited as a primary cause for labor shortages in the rice fields, the study highlights deeper transformations linked to a powerful naturalist ontology leading to deagrarianization. Newly formed systems of solidarity, such as the association Servir Bubajum Áyii, adapt persisting commoning principles to contemporary needs, maintaining commoning principles rooted in pre-colonial commons and support mechanisms with values such as discretion and dignity despite the changes.
