Nomadic heritage villages constitute significant material cultural heritage. Under China’s cultural revitalization and rural development strategies, these villages face spatial degradation driven by tourism and urbanization. Current research predominantly employs isolated analytical approaches—space syntax often overlooks social dynamics while social network analysis (SNA) overlooks physical interfaces—hindering the development of holistic solutions for socio-spatial resilience. This study proposes a multi-scale integrated assessment framework combining social network analysis (SNA) and space syntax to systematically evaluate public space structures in traditional nomadic villages of Xinjiang. The framework provides scientific evidence for optimizing public space design in these villages, facilitating harmonious coexistence between spatial functionality and cultural values. Focusing on three heritage villages—representing compact, linear, and dispersed morphologies—the research employs a hierarchical “village-street-node” analytical model to dissect spatial configurations and their socio-functional dynamics. Key findings include the following: Compact villages exhibit high central clustering but excessive concentration, necessitating strategies to enhance network resilience and peripheral connectivity. Linear villages demonstrate weak systemic linkages, requiring “segment-connection point supplementation” interventions to mitigate structural elongation. Dispersed villages maintain moderate network density but face challenges in visual integration and centrality, demanding targeted activation of key intersections to improve regional cohesion. By merging SNA’s social attributes with space syntax’s geometric precision, this framework bridges a methodological gap, offering comprehensive spatial optimization solutions. Practical recommendations include culturally embedded placemaking, adaptive reuse of transitional spaces, and thematic zoning to balance heritage conservation with tourism needs. Analyzing Xinjiang’s unique spatial–social interactions provides innovative insights for sustainable heritage village planning and replicable solutions for comparable global cases. Full article

This paper offers a Christian ethical evaluation of transhumanism. It employs a two-part framework. First, the paper contextualizes transhumanism within the evolutionary cosmology of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and thereby suggests a theological openness to technologically influenced development as part of an ongoing cosmogenesis towards greater consciousness, or the Omega Point. Second, the paper critically evaluates transhumanist values against five key principles of Catholic Social Teaching (CST): natural law, human dignity, human flourishing, the common good, and care for creation. While the Teilhardian lens does indeed allow us to interpret certain transhumanist goals as potentially conducive to humans, the CST assessment reveals serious ethical concerns that must be addressed. These concerns include threats to inherent dignity through the reductionism of the human person, the potential unchecked exacerbation of current social inequality, and significant conflicts with the care of creation stemming from an unchecked technocratic paradigm as described in Laudato Si’. This paper concludes that while engagement with transhumanism is necessary, a Christian perspective should strive to ensure that technological advancement remains subordinate to the universal dignity of all persons, the common good, and authentic flourishing in communion with God. Background and Objectives: The association between female breast size and spinal back pain is widely suggested in clinical practice but remains insufficiently quantified in general, non-surgical populations in the scientific literature. Larger breasts may increase biomechanical strain on the spine, contributing to musculoskeletal pain and reduced quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the association between breast size and back pain in a general orthopedic population of young women. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 women aged 18–36 who attended orthopedic clinics for non-spinal complaints. Data were collected via structured telephone questionnaires, including demographics, self-reported breast size (cup and band), pain characteristics, and SF-12 quality of life scores. Binary logistic regression, ANOVA, and chi-square analyses assessed associations between breast size, pain presence, severity, and functional outcomes. Results: Back pain prevalence increased with breast size: only 4.9% of B cup participants reported backache, compared to 85% of DD/E cup participants. VAS scores rose from 0.3 ± 1.6 (B cup) to 6.0 ± 2.9 (DD/E cup). Each 1 cm increase in band length raised the odds of back pain by 19.8% (OR = 1.198, p < 0.001), while large cup size was associated with up to 12-fold increased odds of pain. Larger breast size was also significantly associated with work limitations and social impairment. Conclusions: Breast size was strongly associated with the presence and severity of back pain, particularly in the thoracic and cervical regions. Clinicians should consider breast size in the assessment of backache, and reduction mammaplasty may have therapeutic value beyond aesthetics. Full article

Ensuring sustainable food systems is an urgent global priority as populations grow and environmental pressures mount. Technological innovations such as genetic engineering (GE) and nanotechnology (nano) have been promoted as promising pathways for achieving greater sustainability in agriculture and food production. Yet, the sustainability of these technologies is not defined by technical performance alone; it hinges on how they are perceived by key stakeholders and how well they align with broader societal values. This study addresses the critical question of how expert stakeholders evaluate the sustainability of GE and nano-based food and agriculture (agrifood) products. Using a multi-method online platform, we engaged 42 experts across academia, government, industry, and NGOs in the United States to assess six real-world case studies—three using GE and three using nano—across ten different dimensions of sustainability. We show that nano-based products were consistently rated more favorably than their GE counterparts in terms of environmental, economic, and social sustainability, as well as across ethical and societal dimensions. Like prior studies, our results reveal that stakeholders see meaningful distinctions between nanotechnology and biotechnology, likely due to underlying value-based concerns about animal welfare, perceived naturalness, or corporate control of agrifood systems. The fruit coating and flu vaccine—both nano-enabled—received the most positive ratings, while GE mustard greens and salmon were the most polarizing. These results underscore the importance of incorporating stakeholder perspectives in technology assessment and innovation governance. These results also suggest that responsible innovation efforts in agrifood systems should prioritize communication, addressing meaningful societal needs, and the contextual understanding of societal values to build trust and legitimacy. Background/Objectives: Speech intelligibility (SI) is a key indicator of spoken language development, especially for children with hearing loss, as it directly impacts communication and social engagement. However, due to logistical and methodological challenges, SI assessment is often underutilised in clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and consistency of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based transcription model in assessing SI in young children with cochlear implants (CI), hearing aids (HA), or normal hearing (NH), in comparison to naïve human listeners. Methods: A total of 580 speech samples from 58 five-year-old children were transcribed by three naïve listeners and the AI model. Word-level transcription accuracy was evaluated using Bland–Altman plots, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), and word error rate (WER) metrics. Performance was compared across the CI, HA, and NH groups. Results: The AI model demonstrated high consistency with naïve listeners across all groups. Bland–Altman analyses revealed minimal bias, with fewer than 6% of sentences falling outside the 95% limits of agreement. ICC values exceeded 0.9 in all groups, with particularly strong agreement in the NH and CI groups (ICCs > 0.95). WER results further confirmed this alignment and indicated that children with CIs showed better SI performance than those using HAs. Conclusions: The AI-based method offers a reliable and objective solution for SI assessment in young children. Its agreement with human performance supports its integration into clinical and home environments for early intervention and ongoing monitoring of speech development in children with hearing loss. Volcanic islands host exceptional geological features that illustrate complex endogenic processes and interactions with climatic and marine forces, while also being particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Despite their scientific, educational, touristic, and aesthetic values, such islands remain underrepresented within the UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp). This study reviews current volcanic island geoparks and evaluates territories with potential for future designation, based on documented geoheritage, geosite inventories, and geoconservation frameworks. Geoparks are categorized according to their dominant narratives—ranging from recent Quaternary volcanism to broader tectonic, sedimentary, and metamorphic histories. Through an analysis of their distribution, management strategies, and integration into territorial planning, this work highlights the challenges that insular territories face, including vulnerability to global environmental change, limited legal protection, and structural inequalities in access to international resources recognition. It concludes that volcanic island geoparks represent strategic platforms for implementing sustainable development models, especially in ecologically and socially fragile contexts. Objectives: The present cross-sectional analysis aimed to investigate whether Large Language Model-based chatbots can be used as reliable sources of information in orthodontics by evaluating chatbot responses and comparing them to those of dental practitioners with different levels of knowledge. Methods: Eight true and false frequently asked orthodontic questions were submitted to five leading chatbots (ChatGPT-4, Claude-3-Opus, Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental, Microsoft Copilot, and DeepSeek). The consistency of the answers given by chatbots at four different times was assessed using Cronbach’s α. Chi-squared test was used to compare chatbot responses with those given by two groups of clinicians, i.e., general dental practitioners (GDPs) and orthodontic specialists (Os) recruited in an online survey via social media, and differences were considered significant when p < 0.05. Additionally, chatbots were asked to provide a justification for their dichotomous responses using a chain-of-through prompting approach and rating the educational value according to the Global Quality Scale (GQS). Results: A high degree of consistency in answering was found for all analyzed chatbots (α > 0.80). When comparing chatbot answers with GDP and O ones, statistically significant differences were found for almost all the questions (p < 0.05). When evaluating the educational value of chatbot responses, DeepSeek achieved the highest GQS score (median 4.00; interquartile range 0.00), whereas CoPilot had the lowest one (median 2.00; interquartile range 2.00). Conclusions: Although chatbots yield somewhat useful information about orthodontics, they can provide misleading information when dealing with controversial topics. Full article

This study estimates a willingness-to-pay (WTP) space mixed logit model to evaluate user valuations of travel time, safety, and comfort attributes associated with common access modes in Bangkok, including walking, motorcycle taxis, and localized minibuses. The model accounts for preference heterogeneity by specifying random parameters for travel time. Results indicate that users—exhibiting substantial variation in preferences—place higher value on reducing motorcycle taxi travel time, particularly in time-constrained contexts such as peak-hour commuting, whereas walking is more acceptable in less pressured settings. Safety and comfort attributes—such as helmet availability, smooth pavement, and seating—significantly influence access mode choice. Notably, the WTP for helmet availability is estimated at THB 8.04 per trip, equivalent to approximately 40% of the typical fare for station access, underscoring the importance of safety provision. Women exhibit stronger preferences for motorized access modes, reflecting heightened sensitivity to environmental and social conditions. This study represents one of the first applications of WTP-space modeling for valuing informal station access transport in Southeast Asia, offering context-specific and segment-level estimates. These findings support targeted interventions—including differentiated pricing, safety regulations, and service quality enhancements—to strengthen first-/last-mile connectivity. The results provide policy-relevant evidence to advance equitable and sustainable transport, particularly in rapidly urbanizing contexts aligned with SDG 11.2. Full article

Awareness of design when planning public urban spaces assumes particular importance through its mission to meet the diverse needs of the different segments within the community. The elderly is considered one of the pivotal segments, with their influence on strengthening social cohesion, fortifying values, and upholding traditions. On the other hand, such a segment demands special physical, behavioral, and mental requirements that would entail specific consideration in the design process of public common spaces. The study aimed to identify and evaluate the most relevant and important indicators pertaining to the most effective design of an age-friendly public space, with community parks taken as a particular case. The study relies on a mixed approach, combining desk research, expert views, the Delphi technique, and the Analytical Hierarchy Process to achieve that purpose. It resulted in a group of sourced, filtered, and evaluated indicators classified into Physical, Experiential, and Social/Emotional categories, which were evaluated by a mixed representative group of academics, practitioners, governmental officials, and end users, being the elderly or their caretakers. Focus was placed on the central park in the Dahiyat Al-Hussein suburb in Amman, Jordan, which was utilized as a contextual case through which a refined design framework was extracted. This framework serves as a potential base that can be expanded and adapted to create a more generalizable model. Full article

The building sector remains one of the largest contributors to global energy consumption and CO2 emissions, yet selecting optimal retrofit strategies is often hindered by inconsistent evaluation practices and limited integration of environmental and social impacts. This review addresses that gap by systematically analyzing how various assessment methods are applied to building retrofits, particularly from a financial and environmental perspective. A structured literature review was conducted across four major scientific databases using predefined keywords, filters, and inclusion/exclusion criteria, resulting in a final sample of 50 studies (green colored citations of this paper). The review focuses on the application of Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA), Cost–Benefit Analysis (CBA), and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), as well as additional indicators that quantify energy and sustainability performance. Results show that LCCA is the most frequently used method, applied in over 60% of the studies, often in combination with LCA (particularly for long time horizons). CBA appears in fewer than 25% of cases. More than 50% of studies are based in Europe, and over 60% of case studies involve residential buildings. EnergyPlus and DesignBuilder were the most common simulation tools, used in 28% and 16% of the cases, respectively. Risk and uncertainty were typically addressed through Monte Carlo simulations (22%) and sensitivity analysis. Comfort and social impact indicators were underrepresented, with thermal comfort included in only 12% of studies and no formal use of tools like Social-LCA or SROI. The findings highlight the growing sophistication of retrofit assessments post-2020, but also reveal gaps such as geographic imbalance (absence of African case studies), inconsistent treatment of discount rates, and limited integration of social indicators. The study concludes that future research should develop standardized, multidimensional evaluation frameworks that incorporate social equity, stakeholder values, and long-term resilience alongside cost and carbon metrics. Guadua amplexifolia J. Presl is a Neotropical bamboo native to southern Mexico through Central America to Colombia, where it thrives in riparian zones of the San Jorge River basin. Despite its ecological and socio-economic importance, its environmental dynamics and provision of ecosystem services remain poorly understood. This study (1) quantifies spatial and temporal land use/cover changes in the municipality of Montelíbano between 2002 and 2022 and (2) evaluates the ecosystem services that local communities derive from in 2002, 2012, and 2022, and they were classified in QGIS using G. amplexifolia. We applied a supervised classification of Landsat imagery (2002, 2012, 2022) in QGIS, achieving 85% overall accuracy and a Cohen’s Kappa of 0.82 (n = 45 reference points). For the social assessment, we held participatory workshops and conducted semi-structured interviews with artisans, fishers, authorities, and NGO representatives; responses were manually coded to extract key themes. The results show a 12% decline in total vegetated area from 2002 to 2012, followed by an 8% recovery by 2022, with bamboo-dominated stands following a similar pattern. Communities identified raw material provision (87% of mentions), climate regulation (82%), and cultural–recreational benefits (58%) as the most important services provided by G. amplexifolia. This is the first integrated assessment of G. amplexifolia’s landscape dynamics and community-valued services in the San Jorge basin, highlighting its dual function as a renewable resource and a natural safeguard against environmental risks. Our findings offer targeted recommendations for management practices and land use policies to support the species’ conservation and sustainable utilization. Full article

In recent decades, university dormitories have gradually evolved from traditional residential spaces into educationally meaningful venues that support informal learning. However, limited research has explored how supportive environmental factors within dormitories influence students’ informal learning experiences. This study aims to evaluate key environmental factors that affect students’ satisfaction with informal learning in dormitory settings. Based on a comprehensive literature review, two types of informal learning behaviors—individual and collaborative—were defined, and a multi-dimensional evaluation framework comprising five categories and 26 environmental indicators was established. Field observations and structured questionnaires were employed to assess students’ satisfaction with each environmental factor and their overall informal learning experiences. Quantitative analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between environmental conditions and learning satisfaction. Results show that all five-factor categories—spatial designs, natural environments, physical settings, social aspects, and resources—positively influence informal learning, with resources being the most impactful. While environmental influences on individual and collaborative learning exhibit minor differences, the overall patterns are consistent. Compared to other informal learning spaces on campus, dormitory users place greater emphasis on spatial controllability. This study further demonstrates the cognitive and emotional value of dormitory environments and proposes targeted directions for optimizing them as informal learning spaces. Full article

This study introduces Edible Streets as a distinct and scalable model of community-led urban food growing, specifically investigating the drivers and barriers to the initiative. Unlike traditional urban food-growing initiatives, Edible Streets explores the integration of edible plants into street verges and footpaths with direct community involvement of the people who live/work in a street. This study contributes new knowledge by evaluating Edible Streets through the COM-B model of behavioural change, through policy and governance in addition to behaviour change, and by developing practical frameworks to facilitate its implementation. Focusing on Oxford, the research engaged residents through 17 in-person interviews and 18 online surveys, alongside a stakeholder workshop with 21 policymakers, community leaders, and NGO representatives. Findings revealed strong motivation for Edible Streets, driven by values of sustainability, community resilience, and improved well-being. However, capability barriers, including knowledge gaps in gardening, land-use policies, and food preservation, as well as opportunity constraints related to land access, water availability, and environmental challenges, hindered participation. To address these, a How-to Guide was developed, and a pilot Edible Street project was launched. Future steps include establishing a licensing application model to facilitate urban food growing and conducting a Post-Use Evaluation and Impact Study. Nationally, this model could support Right to Grow policies, while globally, it aligns with climate resilience and food security goals. Locally grown food enhances biodiversity, reduces carbon footprints, and strengthens social cohesion. By tackling key barriers and scaling solutions, this study provides actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners to create resilient, equitable urban food systems. Full article

Background: The number of people with heart failure (HF) is rapidly increasing globally. Self-care plays a key role in improving HF outcomes. The readiness to engage in heart failure self-care (HFSC) behaviors encompasses a commitment to change and the capacity to make the change. Commitment is a personal investment and value toward enacting self-care and health-related behaviors. Capacity includes an individual’s skills, knowledge, beliefs, previous experience, and resources. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe patient-identified commitment and capacity factors influencing their readiness to carry out HFSC behaviors. Methods: A qualitative study using thematic analysis was conducted using data from 21 interviews to develop readiness for HFSC themes. Results: The commitment themes identified were cultural values and beliefs, social roles, will to live, attitude, self-efficacy, HF perceptions, and general emotional state. Capacity themes included HF literacy, functional capacity, environmental resources, comorbidities, time, cognitive functioning, and social support. Conclusions: Novel themes related to an individual’s commitment to HFSC activities included their will to live and social roles, while time emerged as a consideration in the capacity to engage in self-care. To optimize HF outcomes, people with HF must be ready to engage in HFSC. Evaluating an individual’s readiness for HFSC can focus healthcare team efforts on targeting specific self-care activities that require intervention. Enhancing readiness by intervening with specific commitment and capacity factors is a step toward optimizing HFSC and improving patient outcomes. Full article

The quality of living environments for older adults represents a critical component of social sustainability in an ageing society. Among various housing options, nursing homes are the most institutionalised form of elderly care and demand special attention regarding architectural design. This paper explores the impact of architectural and open space features on social sustainability in living environments for older adults. A comparative analysis of three Slovenian nursing homes is presented. The first two, built in the post-war period, were based on elevated architectural criteria inspired by Swedish human-centred housing design. The third was completed in 2021 in the post-COVID-19 era, which revealed the vulnerability of such housing typologies. An integrated methodological framework was developed by applying two complementary assessment tools: the Safe and Connected, developed by the authors to evaluate the spatial, health, and social resilience of nursing home environments, and the Well-being and Integration, addressing the role of open space with a particular emphasis on the identification of older adults with their environment and the facilitation of social resilience. Both tools evaluate indicators linked to the social dimension of quality of life for older adults. The results show a gradual improvement in architectural quality from the 1960s to the 1980s, followed by a partial decline in the contemporary case. The Swedish example scored highest across both tools. In contrast, the newest Slovenian facility scored surprisingly low in social integration, highlighting critical gaps in current nursing home design. This study demonstrates the value of applying interdisciplinary, tool-based evaluations in identifying design strategies that foster resilient and inclusive LTC environments, and the proposed framework may serve as a decision-making aid for architects, planners, and policymakers. This research highlights the importance of reintroducing human-oriented design principles to support socially sustainable nursing home environments. Full article
