The global market for flame-retardant materials is expected to grow steadily, from USD 7.0 billion in 2022 to USD 16.6 billion in 2030, driven by increasing demand for environment-friendly fire safety solutions in transportation, construction, and electronics. Polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable polymer which possesses excellent mechanical properties, is increasingly being considered for future mobility applications. However, it is characterized by high heat release and toxic smoke during combustion, which are significant drawbacks. In order to address this, the chemical modification of Kraft lignin was achieved through a phenolation and subsequent silylation with tetraethoxysilane, aiming to mitigate the degradation of PLA’s mechanical properties while utilizing its inherent char-forming ability. The modified lignins were combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and melt-mixed with PLA using an injection-mixing molder to prepare test specimens. Analysis by FT-IR, NMR spectroscopy, and SEM-EDS confirmed successful grafting of phenolic and silane functionalities, and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated enhanced thermal stability of the modified lignins compared to unmodified ones. Vertical burning tests and limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurements showed that the PLA/APP/SPKL composite material achieved a V-0 UL-94 rating and 31.95% LOI, demonstrating the highest level of flame retardancy. This compares to the LOI of neat PLA, 19 to 21%. Despite the enhancement in flame retardancy to the V-0 level, the decline in tensile strength was limited, and the composite retained comparable mechanical strength to PLA-APP composites with V-2 flame retardancy. The findings indicate that the combination of phenolation and silylation of lignin with APP, a flame-retardant material, offers a viable and sustainable methodology for the fabrication of PLA composites that exhibit both flame retardancy and mechanical strength. The inherent flammability and hydrophilicity of nylon/cotton (NC) blend fabrics limit their practical applications. Traditional hydrophobic treatments often involve fluorinated compounds or nanomaterials, which raise environmental concerns and exhibit poor durability. To address these issues, this study developed a sustainable multifunctional finishing strategy. Initially, the nylon/cotton blended fabric was pretreated with 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxy silane (GPTMS). An intumescent flame retardant coating based on bio-derived phytic acid (PA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was constructed on NC fabrics via a layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly process. Subsequently, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was grafted to reduce surface energy, imparting synergistic flame retardancy and superhydrophobicity. The treated fabric (C-3) showed excellent flame retardant and self-extinguishing behavior, with no afterflame or afterglow during vertical burning and a char length of only 35 mm. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed a residual char rate of 43.9%, far exceeding that of untreated fabric (8.6%). After PDMS modification, the fabric reached a water contact angle of 157.8°, indicating superior superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties. Durability tests showed that the fabric maintained its flame retardancy (no afterflame or afterglow) and superhydrophobicity (WCA > 150°) after 360 cm of abrasion and five laundering cycles. This fluorine-free, nanoparticle-free, and environmentally friendly approach offers a promising route for developing multifunctional NC fabrics for applications in firefighting clothing and self-cleaning textiles. Maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles are widely used in biomedical, catalytic, and environmental applications owing to their superparamagnetic properties and surface tunability. Functionalization with primary amine groups via 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) is commonly employed to enable the covalent immobilization of biomolecules and other functional species. The efficiency of this silanization process depends significantly on the density of surface hydroxyl groups, which serve as reactive sites for silane coupling. In this study, the impact of acid and base pretreatments on the surface hydroxylation of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles and the subsequent APTES grafting performance was systematically evaluated. Intermediate modification using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was explored as a strategy to enhance silanization by forming a hydroxyl-rich silica interlayer. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and zeta-potential measurements were performed to assess surface chemistry and functional-group incorporation. The results indicate that acid pretreatment significantly increases the availability of reactive –OH groups, while TEOS-assisted silanization improves the uniformity and density of surface-bound amine groups. These findings highlight the critical role of surface conditioning and sequential modification in achieving the controlled and robust amine functionalization of iron oxide nanoparticles. The developed approach provides a foundation for the rational design of surface engineering protocols for high-performance magnetic nanomaterials. Full article

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with good hydrophobicity and nano-SiO2 with excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties are used as a composite coating for cellulose insulating paper in oil-immersed transformers, which effectively reduces the moisture generated by the thermal aging process, thus prolonging each transformer’s service life. This study employed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects of surface-modified nano-SiO2 with different silane coupling agents (KH570 and KH151) on the thermodynamic properties and hydrophobicity of PDMS. Four groups of anhydrous models were constructed, namely, PDMS, P-SiO2, P-570, and P-151, as well as four corresponding groups of water-containing models: PDMS/H2O, P-SiO2/H2O, P-570/H2O, and P-151/H2O. The results demonstrate that incorporating silane-coupled nano-SiO2 into PDMS enhances mechanical properties, FFV, CED, MSD, diffusion coefficient, interaction energy, and hydrogen bond count, with KH570-grafted composites exhibiting optimal thermomechanical performance and hydrophobicity. At a temperature of 343 K, KH570 modification increased the bulk modulus and CED by 26.5% and 31.0%, respectively, while reducing the water molecular diffusion coefficient by 24.7% compared to that of unmodified PDMS/SiO2 composites. The extended KH570 chains occupy additional free volume, forming a larger steric hindrance layer, restricting molecular chain mobility, suppressing hydrogen bond formation, and establishing a low energy surface. The initial focus of this study was placed on the conversion of waste into valuable substances. Waste cement was systematically processed to extract silica powder, which was subsequently functionalized with γ-aminopropyl-trimethoxy-silane (KH550) via covalent grafting. The surface-modified silica particles demonstrated optimized amphiphilicity for interfacial stabilization, as confirmed by contact angle measurements. When employed in styrene/water Pickering emulsions, these modified silica particles exhibited exceptional stabilization efficiency, enabling the synthesis of core–shell polystyrene/silica composite microspheres visualized by SEM. It was demonstrated by the results that the Pickering emulsions could be stabilized by SiO2 when the appropriate polarity and concentration were achieved. XRD revealed successful silica integration without crystalline phase alteration. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated significantly enhanced thermal stability (50.6% residual mass at 800 °C), indicating substantial flame retardancy potential. This waste-to-functional-material strategy not only addresses environmental concerns but also provides an economically viable pathway for advanced polymer composites. Full article

Epoxy resin (EP) is a candidate material for offshore oil platform safety signs due to its excellent corrosion resistance property. However, fabricating EP with good anti-corrosion as well as mechanical properties remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a new modification strategy to simultaneously improve the corrosion resistance and mechanical performance of EP by coupling it with KH550 silanized graphene oxide (KGO) and KH550 silanized glass fiber (KGF). KGO and KGF were grafted onto EP to obtain the modified EP material, i.e., KGO/KGF/EP composites and were characterized by FITR, XRD, SEM, and TGA to confirm the successful synthesis of the composites. It is shown that the tensile strength and adhesion strength of KGO/KGF/EP were 85.5 MPa and 16.0 MPa, which are 10.3% and 23.1% higher than KGO/GF/EP. Compared with KGF/EP, the corrosion potential increased by 9.9% and the corrosion rate decreased by 98.8%. Moreover, fluid–structure coupling simulation indicated the maximum stress of the material was within the criteria under extreme wind speeds, demonstrating its great potential for offshore oil platform safety sign applications. Epoxy resin is regarded as a reliable option for coating advanced materials owing to its outstanding strength, adhesion, and stability. However, its relatively weak toughness compared to common materials has limited its application. In this study, the toughness of epoxy resin was enhanced by incorporating bamboo fibers, and a novel polymer coating material for bamboo-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin was developed. Different fiber pretreatment methods were employed to address the issue of poor interfacial performance between bamboo fibers and epoxy resin, aiming to optimize its performance as an advanced material coating. The effects of curing agents, fiber mesh sizes, fiber contents, and fiber pretreatment methods on the mechanical properties of the fiber-modified resin composites were investigated. The findings indicate that the JH45 and T31 curing agents were more effective in promoting the homogeneous dispersion of fibers within the epoxy resin. Additionally, bamboo fibers modified with KH550 exhibited enhanced interfacial properties: the tensile strength of the composite demonstrated a respective increase of 31.1% and 27.0% compared to untreated fibers. Increasing the mesh size proved advantageous for improving tensile properties, albeit potentially impacting the compressive properties. Particularly noteworthy was the significantly enhanced interfacial compatibility between bamboo fibers treated with the silane coupling agent KH550 and the epoxy resin. Analysis using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that treating bamboo fibers with sodium hydroxide effectively enhanced bonding at the fiber–resin interface. This enhancement was attributed to the combined effects of bamboo fiber hydrolysis and delamination reactions. The silane coupling agent promoted the chemical reaction between bamboo fibers and epoxy resin through grafting, thereby strengthening the cross-linking property of the composites. These findings offer valuable insights into the design and fabrication of natural-fiber-reinforced polymer composites suitable for coating advanced materials. Full article

Phthalocyanine-sensitized TiO2 significantly enhances photocatalytic performance, but the method of phthalocyanine immobilization also plays a crucial role in its performance. In order to investigate the effect of the binding strategy of phthalocyanine and TiO2 on photocatalytic performance, a dual-pathway study has been conducted. On the one hand, zinc-tetra (N-carbonylacrylic) aminephthalocyanine (Pc) was directly grafted onto the surface of Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2 (FST). On the other hand, Pc was immobilized on a silane coupling agent ((3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane) grafted onto the surface of the FST. Through photocatalytic experiments on the two types of composite materials synthesized, the results showed that the photocatalyst obtained by directly sensitizing Pc (FSTP) exhibited better performance on rhodamine B(RhB) removal than did the other photocatalyst using the silane coupling agent (FSTAP). Further mechanistic studies showed that directly sensitized FSTP exhibited more efficient photogenerated electron–hole pair separation, whereas FSTAP linked by a silane coupling agent created an additional transport distance that might greatly affect the photogenerated electron transport. Therefore, the dual-pathway research in this work provides new guidance for efficiently constructing phthalocyanine-sensitized TiO2 photocatalysts. Full article

Halloysite was successfully grafted with silane APTES using both wet and dry modification methods. Among them, wet modification using aqueous solution possessed the highest modification efficiency and grafting ratio. Morphological observations demonstrated that APTES grafting on halloysite improved both the filler dispersion and interfacial compatibility in polymer composites. The rheology and crystallization behavior indicated that silane modification improved the halloysite dispersion in the polypropylene (PP) matrix and enhanced the interfacial bonding. Furthermore, the modified halloysite also improved the thermal stability of the PP composites, showing elevated decomposition temperatures of PP. The mechanical properties of halloysite/PP nanocomposites were apparently improved with APTES modification. The filler content of the nanocomposites was finally optimized to 2% by considering trade-offs of the tensile, flexural, and Izod impact properties. Full article

Surface-based biosensors have proven to be of particular interest in the monitoring of human pathogens by means of their distinct nucleic acid sequences. Genosensors rely on targeted gene/DNA probe hybridization at the surface of a physical transducer and have been exploited for their high specificity and physicochemical stability. Unfortunately, these sensing materials still face limitations impeding their use in current diagnostic techniques. Most of their shortcomings arise from their suboptimal surface properties, including low hybridization density, inadequate probe orientation, and biofouling. Herein, we describe and compare two functionalization methodologies to immobilize DNA probes on a glass substrate via a thermoresponsive polymer in order to produce genosensors with improved properties. The first methodology relies on the use of a silanization step, followed by PET-RAFT of NIPAM monomers on the coated surface, while the second relies on vinyl sulfone modifications of the substrate, to which the pre-synthetized PNIPAM was grafted to. The functionalized substrates were fully characterized by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for their surface atomic content, fluorescence assay for their DNA hybridization density, and water contact angle measurements for their thermoresponsive behavior. The antifouling properties were evaluated by fluorescence microscopy. Both immobilization methodologies hold the potential to be applied to the engineering of DNA biosensors with a variety of polymers and other metal oxide surfaces. Full article

In this study, the feasibility of using bamboo bark fibers as modifiers to enhance asphalt mortar performance was investigated. Bamboo bark fibers were modified with NaOH, KH570 silane coupling agent, and nano-SiO2, and their preparation methods were established. The modified fibers were assessed for their oil absorption, thermal stability, and hydrophobicity. The asphalt mortar was evaluated for three key indicators: rutting resistance, deformation resistance, and durability at high temperatures. The microscopic morphology and modification mechanisms of the fibers were also studied. The results showed that modification with NaOH increased fiber porosity and surface roughness, while KH570 and its hydrolysis products enabled nano-SiO2 grafting onto the fibers, improving their adsorption to asphalt. The NaOH-KH570-nano-SiO2 ternary-composite-modified bamboo bark fiber (NKSBF) demonstrated superior hydrophobicity, oil absorption, and thermal stability at the asphalt mixing temperature. Among the modified fibers, asphalt mortar containing 3% NKSBF showed the best performance based on three key indicators, increased the shear strength by 96.4% and the softening point by 7.1% compared to the base asphalt, and increased the ductility by 1% compared to lignin fiber asphalt mortar. The incorporation of 3% bamboo bark fibers improved the rutting resistance, deformation resistance, and durability of short-term-aged asphalt mortar, with NKSBF showing the most significant improvement. This study aimed to prepare a facile hierarchical aluminium surface using a two-step process consisting of chemical etching in selected concentrations of CuCl2 solution and surface grafting through immersion in an ethanol solution containing 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane. The goal was to achieve superhydrophobic characteristics on the aluminium surface, including enhanced corrosion resistance, efficient self-cleaning ability, and improved anti-icing performance. The surface characterisation of the untreated aluminium and treated in CuCl2 solutions of different concentrations was performed using contact profilometry, optical tensiometry, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy to determine the surface topography, wettability, morphology, and surface composition. The corrosion properties were evaluated using potentiodynamic measurements in simulated acid rain solution and salt-spray test according to ASTM B117-22. In addition, self-cleaning and anti-icing tests were performed on superhydrophobic surfaces prepared under optimal conditions. The results showed that the nano-/micro-structured etched aluminium surface with an optimal 0.5 M concentration of CuCl2 grafted with a perfluoroalkyl silane film achieved superhydrophobic characteristics, with water droplets exhibiting efficient corrosion protection, self-cleaning ability, and improved anti-icing performance with decreased ice nucleation temperature and up to 545% increased freezing delay. In order to further enhance the erosion resistance of cement concrete pavement materials, this study constructed an apparent rough hydrophobic structure layer by spraying a micro-nano substrate coating on the surface layer of the cement concrete pavement. This was followed by a secondary spray of a hydroxy-silicone oil-modified epoxy resin and a low surface energy-modified substance paste, which combine to form a superhydrophobic coating. The hydrophobic mechanism of the coating was then analysed. Firstly, the effects of different types and ratios of micro-nano substrates on the apparent morphology and hydrophobic performance of the rough structure layer were explored through contact angle testing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Subsequently, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and permeation gel chromatography were employed to ascertain the optimal modification ratio, temperature, and reaction mechanism of hydroxy-silicone oil with E51 type epoxy resin. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the modified epoxy resin-low surface energy-modified substance paste were evaluated through tensile tests. Finally, the erosion resistance of the superhydrophobic coating was tested under a range of conditions, including acidic, alkaline, de-icer, UV ageing, freeze-thaw cycles and wet wheel wear. The results demonstrate that relying solely on the rough structure of the concrete surface makes it challenging to achieve superhydrophobic performance. A rough structure layer constructed with diamond micropowder and hydrophobic nano-silica is less prone to cracking and can form more “air chamber” structures on the surface, with better wear resistance and hydrophobic performance. The ring-opening reaction products that occur during the preparation of modified epoxy resin will severely affect its mechanical strength after curing. Controlling the reaction temperature and reactant ratio can effectively push the modification reaction of epoxy resin through dehydration condensation, which produces more grafted polymer. It is noteworthy that the grafted polymer content is positively correlated with the hydrophobicity of the modified epoxy resin. The superhydrophobic coating exhibited enhanced erosion resistance (based on hydrochloric acid), UV ageing resistance, abrasion resistance, and freeze-thaw damage resistance to de-icers by 19.41%, 18.36%, 43.17% and 87.47%, respectively, in comparison to the conventional silane-based surface treatment. Polymer composites are widely used in various fields of production and life, and the study of preparing environmentally friendly and flame retardant clay/polymer composites has gradually become a global research hotspot. But how to efficiently surface modify clay and apply it to the field of flame retardant polymers is still a potential challenge. One of the most commonly used surface modification methods is the modification of clay with silane coupling agents. The hydrolysable groups of the silane coupling agent first hydrolyze to generate hydroxyl groups. These hydroxyl groups then undergo a condensation reaction with the hydroxyl groups on the surface of the clay, allowing for organic functional groups to be grafted onto the clay surface. The organic functional groups and polymer matrix react to generate chemical bonds so that the composite material’s interface is more closely combined. Thus, the dispersion of clay in the organic polymer material and the compatibility of the two is better, which improves the flame retardant effect of the composite material. This paper introduces the classification of a silane coupling agent and the mechanism and process of silane coupling agent-modified clay, outlines the mechanism of silane coupling agent-modified clay flame retardant polymers, reviews the research results on flame retardant polymers of various clays after surface treatment with silane coupling agents in recent years, and highlights the synergistic flame retardant effect of clay and flame retardant organized by silane coupling agents. Finally, it is found that the current research in the field of silane coupling agent-modified clay in flame retardants is focused on the modification of montmorillonite, sepiolite, attapulgite, and kaolinite by KH-550, KH-560, and KH-570, and the development trends in this field are also prospected. This review focuses on functional materials that contain terpyridine (terpy) units, which can be synthesized from biomass-derived platform chemicals. The latter are obtained by the chemical conversion of raw biopolymers such as cellulose (e.g., 2-furaldehyde) or lignin (e.g., syringaldehyde). These biomass-derived platform chemicals serve as starting reagents for the preparation of many different terpyridine derivatives using various synthetic strategies (e.g., Kröhnke reaction, cross-coupling reactions). Chemical transformations of these terpyridines provide a broad range of different ligands with various functionalities to be used for the modification or construction of various materials. Either inorganic materials (such as oxides) or organic ones (such as polymers) can be combined with terpyridines to provide functional materials. Different strategies are presented for grafting terpy to materials, such as covalent grafting through a carboxylic acid or silanization. Furthermore, terpy can be used directly for the elaboration of functional materials via complexation with metals. The so-obtained functional materials find various applications, such as photovoltaic devices, heterogeneous catalysts, metal–organic frameworks (MOF), and metallopolymers. Finally, some possible developments are presented. Full article
