Hormonal contraceptives (HCs) are widely used and generally well tolerated; however, their neuroendocrinological effects remain underappreciated in clinical decision-making. Beyond ovulation suppression, HCs influence brain function by modulating key neurotransmitters such as GABA, serotonin, and dopamine, as well as neurosteroids like allopregnanolone and β-endorphin. These interactions help explain why some users experience mood swings, anxiety, or changes in sexual desire, while others report improvements in well-being. In this narrative review, we explore how different estrogenic and progestin components affect central pathways involved in emotional regulation and cognition. Evidence suggests that estradiol or estetrol-based formulations combined with anti-androgenic progestins like drospirenone or nomegestrol acetate may offer a more favourable neuroendocrine profile, particularly in women with a history of mood disorders or hormonal sensitivity. Understanding these neuroendocrine mechanisms may support more personalized contraceptive choices, particularly in women with mood disorders and hormonal vulnerability. Full article

Though previous studies have demonstrated the protective benefits of sports participation against illicit drug use for a general population, how these findings apply to LGBTQ youth remains unknown. This study specifically looks at the relationship between sports participation and prescription drug misuse among sexual and gender minority youth. Using secondary data from the 2019 YRBS, we analyze associations among sports participation, sexual orientation, gender identity, and prescription drug misuse among a representative sample of U.S. high school students in Florida. Our results show that sexual and gender minority youth are at increased risk for prescription drug misuse compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. Moreover, sports participation is associated with higher rates of prescription drug misuse among all students, and the nuances of these trends are discussed with particular attention paid to sexual and gender minority youth. These results challenge conventional wisdom about sports participation. Without the addition of new demographic survey questions and LGBTQ youth participation in the YRBS, common myths about sports might have persisted. Our findings point to the meaningful presence of LGBTQ youth in sports, call for research and programming on LGBTQ athletes’ unique needs regarding substance misuse risk, and encourage LGBTQ-inclusive policies and practices within schools and sports programs in particular. Castration remains a common surgical procedure in equids, yet postoperative complications such as hemorrhage, infection, and eventration persist, influencing surgical outcomes. This retrospective study introduced a novel modified semi-closed castration technique aimed at minimizing these complications. Eighty-five sexually intact mature male equids (including horses, ponies, and donkeys) underwent the described inguinal castration procedure under general anesthesia. The technique involved a carefully managed opening and subsequent secure closure of the parietal vaginal tunic, enabling direct inspection of tunic contents while reducing risks associated with fully open or closed approaches. The median surgery duration was 60 min (range, 45–95), with no intraoperative complications. Postoperatively, only two equids (2.35%) exhibited scrotal swelling, which was resolved rapidly with NSAIDs. No cases of hemorrhage, pyrexia, or infection occurred. Follow-up, conducted via owner interviews after a minimum of three months, confirmed complete recovery and primary intention healing in all patients, who returned to normal activity within two days post-surgery. Compared to previously documented complication rates ranging from 2% to 48%, the present approach demonstrates superior results. Additionally, this study proposes refining existing castration technique classifications, focusing explicitly on the vaginal tunic’s status post-procedure (open, semi-closed, closed) for clarity and consistency. This novel semi-closed inguinal technique effectively integrates inspection advantages with closed technique safety, offering significantly reduced complication rates and enhanced postoperative recovery profiles in equids undergoing castration. Background: Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5i), particularly tadalafil and sildenafil, are the first-line therapies for erectile dysfunction (ED). After the patent expiration of branded tadalafil in 2017, generic formulations became available. Despite equivalent efficacy, skepticism persists regarding the effectiveness and safety of generics. The SHIFT study aimed to evaluate the non-inferiority of a generic tadalafil (Dalerpen) compared with branded and other generic tadalafil in terms of clinical efficacy and patient satisfaction. Methods: A prospective, multicenter study was conducted involving 247 patients treated with tadalafil (either 5 mg or 20 mg) for ED. Patients switched from branded or other generic tadalafil to Dalerpen. Baseline and follow-up assessments included the International Index of Erectile Function—Erectile Function Domain (IIEF-EF) (primary endpoint), Sexual Encounter Profile (SEP-2 and SEP-3), and International Prostatic Symptom Score (IPSS). A one-month follow-up was performed. Results: A total of 247 patients were included in the final analysis. After switching to Dalerpen, significant improvements were observed in both IIEF-EF (18.8 ± 5.6 vs. 16.7 ± 5.4, p < 0.001) and IPSS scores (10.4 ± 6.7 vs. 11.2 ± 6.3, p < 0.001), though the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) was not reached. SEP-3 scores also significantly increased (3 ± 1.2 vs. 2 ± 1.1, p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis identified baseline IIEF, IPSS scores, and post-treatment IPSS as predictors of IIEF-EF improvement (p < 0.001). Switching to Dalerpen was an independent predictor of both IIEF-EF and IPSS improvement. No new adverse events were reported. Conclusions: The SHIFT study demonstrates that Dalerpen is non-inferior to branded tadalafil in terms of clinical efficacy, offering a reliable and cost-effective therapeutic option. Educating patients on bioequivalence and addressing concerns regarding generic drugs are essential to facilitate therapeutic switches. Full article

A typical seed of rice (Oryza sativa L.) gives rise to a single seedling. In contrast, seeds from multiple embryos may develop into two or more seedlings, one of which is generated via sexual reproduction, while the others are likely to originate through apomictic pathways. Therefore, the occurrence of multiple embryos is often considered a hallmark of apomixis in rice. Apomixis refers to an asexual reproductive strategy wherein unreduced gametes form through modified meiosis (apomeiosis) without fertilization, thereby generating clonal offspring generally genetically identical to the maternal plant. This process is of great relevance in fixing heterosis in hybrid rice breeding. This review discusses the origin, frequency, genetic regulation, and candidate genes related to multiple embryos in rice and provides a systematic summary of the latest research advances in rice apomixis. The insights presented in this study provide a theoretical foundation for the application of apomixis in rice breeding. Full article

Aging in sexually reproducing organisms is shaped by the declining force of natural selection after reproduction begins. In Drosophila melanogaster, experimental evolution shows that altering the age of reproduction shifts the timing of aging. Using the Drosophila experimental evolution population (DEEP) resource, which includes long- and short- lived populations evolved under distinct reproductive schedules, we investigated how immune defense against Beauveria bassiana changes with age and evolved lifespan. We tested survival post-infection at multiple ages and examined genomic differentiation for immune-related genes. Both population types showed age-related declines in immune defense. Long-lived populations consistently exhibited age-specific defense when both long- and short-lived populations were tested. Genomic comparisons revealed thousands of differentiated loci, yet no enrichment for canonical immune genes or overlap with gene sets from studies of direct selection for immunity. These results suggest that enhanced immune defense can evolve alongside extended lifespan, likely via general physiological robustness rather than traditional immune pathways. A more detailed analysis may reveal that selection for lifespan favors tolerance-based mechanisms that reduce infection damage without triggering immune activation, in contrast to direct selection for resistance. Our findings demonstrate the utility of experimentally evolved populations for dissecting the genetic architecture of aging and immune defense to inform strategies to mitigate age-related costs associated with immune activation. Sexuality and intimacy are essential aspects of the human experience for all people, contributing significantly to physical and emotional connections, well-being, and quality of life. Despite their importance, these topics are frequently overlooked in stroke rehabilitation, especially for those with cognitive and perceptual impairments. Existing research on post-stroke sexual rehabilitation tends to focus on sexual dysfunction and the secondary physical and psychological stroke symptoms, with little attention to cognitive and perceptual impairments. Cognitive deficits, such as decreased memory, generalized attention, and executive function not only can hinder sexual participation but also raise the complex issue of capacity to consent. This paper argues that it is imperative for researchers and healthcare practitioners to address cognitive and perceptual challenges, understand consent laws in their respective regions, and consider the influence of culture and social norms in order to support the sexual rights and well-being of all stroke survivors. Furthermore, this article provides some practical recommendations, from an occupational therapy perspective, that healthcare practitioners can provide to clients and their partners. Full article

Semen collection is an important component of conservation and animal husbandry. Semen quality is generally improved using voluntary collection methods, particularly artificial vaginas (AVs). Most commercially available AVs are tube-shaped with few species-specific design augmentations. As genitalia are highly variable across taxa, incorporating species-specific genital morphologies into AV designs may enhance collected semen quality. We compared dolphin semen quality using: (1) silicone bioinspired artificial vaginas (BAVs) that reflect the internal shape of dolphin vaginas, and (2) manual stimulation. Sperm motility and kinematic parameters of five bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) were assessed using computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA). Sperm collected using BAVs showed non-significant increases in median progressive and rapid motility, and increases in median and mean linear motility, supporting a sexual selection functional hypothesis for the biodiverse vaginal folds unique to whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Sperm concentration decreased with BAV collection, while no consistent trends were detected in volume, pH, velocity, or plasma membrane integrity. Modifications to AVs for other species that incorporate genital morphologies may also optimize collected semen quality for application to artificial insemination. Full article

This research investigated the temporal dynamics of the anthropogenic impact of fishing pressure on the resilience of the fish species Sarotherodon melanotheron (Rüppel, 1858) in the African Lake Toho, located in southwest Benin. The sampling and analysis of monthly length frequency data were conducted from April 2002 to March 2003 and from April 2022 to March 2023 using the FAO-ICLARM Stock Assessment Tool (FiSAT II software program (version 1.2.2.). The analysis of the S. melanotheron population in Lake Toho revealed a significantly diminishing resilience potential, reflected mainly in general reductions in both the average size and weight of individuals. There was a notable reduction in the size of Sarotherodon melanotheron individuals caught between 2002–2003 and 2022–2023, reflecting the increased pressure on juvenile size classes. Catches are now concentrated mainly on immature fish, revealing increasing exploitation before sexual maturity is reached. An analysis of maturity stages showed a decrease in the percentage of mature individuals in the catches (69.27% in 2002–2003 compared to 55.07% in 2022–2023) and a reduction in the number of mega-spawners (4.53% in 2002–2003 compared to 1.56% in 2022–2023). Growth parameters revealed a decrease in asymptotic length (from 32.2 cm to 23.8 cm) and longevity (from 9.37 years to 7.89 years), while the growth coefficient slightly increased. The mean size at first capture and optimal size significantly declined, indicating increased juvenile exploitation. The total and natural mortalities increased, whereas the fishing mortality remained stable. The exploitation rate remained high, despite a slight decrease from 0.69 to 0.65. Finally, the declines in the yield per recruit, maximum sustainable yield, and biomass confirm the increasing fishing pressure, leading to growth overfishing, recruitment overfishing, reproductive overfishing, and, last but not least, a decreasing resilience potential. These findings highlight the growing overexploitation of S. melanotheron in Lake Toho, compromising stock renewal, fish population resilience, sustainability, and production while jeopardizing local food safety. The pelvis is the most dimorphic part of the human skeleton, primarily because of its involvement in the birth process. Many sexually dimorphic traits are concentrated in the coxal bones, which form the larger part of the birth canal. The present study aimed to assess the sex differences in coxal bone size and to develop machine learning (ML) models for sex estimation based on coxal bone measurements. The sample included abdominal computed tomography scans of 276 adult Bulgarians. Three-dimensional models of the pelves were generated using InVesalius. The three-dimensional coordinates of 34 landmarks located on the right and left coxal bones were collected in MeshLab. Based on the landmark coordinates, various measurements characterizing the coxal bones were calculated. The coxal bone dimensions were tested for significant differences with respect to sex, age, and laterality. Support Vector Machines and logistic regression were employed to train models for sex estimation. The results demonstrate strong sexual dimorphism in coxal bone dimensions along with some bilateral and age-related differences. The trained ML models classify male and female bones with very high accuracy, ranging between 95% and 100%. Full article

Background and objectives: Duloxetine is widely used for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and various types of neuropathic pain. While its efficacy is well documented in clinical trials, less is known about how it is perceived and utilized in routine psychiatric practice. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a cross-sectional observational study involving 80 psychiatrists from Spain to assess real-world clinical attitudes toward duloxetine. Methods: Participants completed a 20-item multiple-choice questionnaire that examined familiarity, perceived efficacy in multiple conditions (MDD, GAD, neuropathic pain, somatization, and quality of life), and perspectives on tolerability, safety, adherence, and overall satisfaction. Results: Survey results indicated that a large majority of psychiatrists frequently prescribe duloxetine, particularly for patients with MDD and comorbid chronic pain. Notably, 94% rated it as either “more effective” or “much more effective” for diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain. Psychiatrists reported a high perceived efficacy of duloxetine: 94% rated it as “more effective” or “much more effective” for diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and 93% gave similarly positive ratings for general neuropathic pain. For somatization, 70% found it “effective” or “very effective”, and 83% observed improvements in quality of life for many of their patients. Psychiatrists generally reported favorable perceptions of duloxetine’s tolerability profile: 97.5% rated it as the antidepressant associated with the least weight gain, and 82.5% perceived fewer sexual side effects compared to other options. Sedation and gastrointestinal side effects were generally considered mild or less severe. In terms of treatment adherence, 69% rated it as “better” or “much better” than other antidepressants, and 80% found its combination with other antidepressants to be “favorable” or “very favorable”. Overall satisfaction was high, with 99% of psychiatrists reporting being either “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with its use. The side effect profile was generally viewed as manageable, with low perceived rates of weight gain, sedation, and sexual dysfunction. Furthermore, 96% of respondents expressed a willingness to recommend duloxetine to their colleagues. Conclusions: Psychiatrists reported highly favorable attitudes toward duloxetine, viewing it as a flexible treatment option in routine care. However, these findings reflect clinicians’ subjective perceptions rather than objective clinical outcomes and should be interpreted accordingly. Full article

The treatment for the disease, such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and systemic therapy, can significantly impact patients’ body image and overall quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate body image perceptions and cancer-related quality of life in women who underwent surgical treatment for breast cancer at a reference hospital in southern Brazil. One hundred six women with breast cancer, aged 21 to 93 years (M = 55.3; SD = 12.9), participated in this cross-sectional study. They responded to the Body Image and Relationships Scale (BIRS), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy for Breast Cancer scale (FACT-B), and a questionnaire on clinical and sociodemographic variables. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that general perceived body image, as measured by BIRS, was significantly predicted by younger age and chemotherapy (F(2, 99) = 7.376, p = 0.003). These predictors accounted for 11.2% of the variance in BIRS (adjusted R2 = 0.112). Hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that cancer-related quality of life was significantly predicted by younger age, use of psychiatric medication, and body image domains, including strength and health, social barriers, and appearance and sexuality. The complete model, encompassing all predictors, was significant (F(5, 96) = 15.970, p < 0.001) and explained 42.6% of the variance in FACT-B (adjusted R2 = 0.426). Clinicians should be aware that younger patients who have undergone chemotherapy for breast cancer may experience changes in body image perception following surgery. Contributing factors such as younger age, use of psychiatric medications, and negative postoperative body image may be associated with a diminished quality of life related to cancer. Full article

Ochrolechia is a diverse and charismatic lineage of both sexually and asexually reproducing lichens, with centers of species richness in northern temperate areas of the world, including North America. As part of recent work to comprehensively inventory the lichens of the Indian Peaks Wilderness (Arapaho–Roosevelt National Forest, Front Range Mountains, Colorado), we discovered material of a sorediate member of the genus to which no existing names could be applied. This material was collected in very remote, extremely difficult-to-access mid-montane forests of the west slope of the Indian Peaks Wilderness, in a steep and jagged off-trail drainage (Hell Canyon). Subsequent study of this material along with review of pre-existing collections at the COLO Herbarium revealed it to represent a new scientific species. We here formally describe Ochrolechia raynori, in honor of Seth Raynor who led the Indian Peaks Wilderness lichen inventory. We additionally document the occurrence of Dactylospora parasitica on this new lichen species. Ochrolechia raynori is distinctive for its continuous, smooth, shiny thallus that bears discrete soralia and coarse soredia, its occurrence on mosses and other lichens that overgrow rocks, and its chemistry. We generated a molecular phylogeny of this and other members of Ochrolechia using the nrITS locus and show O. raynori to be sister to the widespread, sexually reproducing species O. upsaliensis. This occurrence of an asexual species that is sister to a sexual species is consistent with the “species pair” hypothesis in lichenology, which suggests an intimate role of reproductive mode divergence in the process of speciation. Examination of the phylogeny yielded evidence of four additional pairs in Ochrolechia, for a total of five species pairs, which indicates that this phenomenon may be a common occurrence in this lineage. IUCN Conservation Assessment of Ochrolechia raynori revealed the species to be best considered as Critically Endangered. However, we expect that continued efforts to inventory the lichens of the southern Rocky Mountains, especially in some of its wildest, most remote regions in similar habitats, will likely result in the discovery of additional populations of this remarkable new species. Dating Application Use and Its Relationship with Mental Health Outcomes Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Urban Areas of Thailand: A Nationwide Online Cross-Sectional Survey

Dating applications (DAs) are widely used to establish social and sexual connections among men who have sex with men (MSM), particularly in urban areas. In this study, we aimed to examine the associations between DA use and mental health among Thai MSM. An online cross-sectional survey was completed by 442 MSM residing in Bangkok and urban municipalities across all regions of Thailand. Psychological distress (PD) and probable depression were assessed using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), respectively. Of the participants, 62.7% were current users, with 33.2% experiencing PD and 33.9% having depression. A logistic regression analysis showed that PD was significantly associated with late-night use (AOR = 2.02, 95% CI: 1.08–3.78), matching failure (AOR = 1.95, 95% CI: 1.12–3.38), rejection (AOR = 2.07, 95% CI: 1.18–3.62), and ghosting (AOR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.02–3.11). Simultaneously, depression was significantly associated with using DAs with the motivation of hooking up (AOR = 2.27, 95% CI: 1.05–4.93), privacy violations (AOR = 2.76, 95% CI: 1.42–5.38), unsolicited sexual images (AOR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.11–3.74), physical assault (AOR = 2.97, 95% CI: 1.57–5.61), harassment (AOR = 2.54, 95% CI: 1.37–4.70), scams (AOR = 2.59, 95% CI: 1.41–4.77), and extreme disappointment from DA use (AOR = 5.98, 95% CI: 1.84–19.41). These findings highlight how DA usage patterns and negative experiences may contribute to the poorer mental health among MSM in urban areas. Full article

In response to the increasing politicization and polarization of discourses around gender, sexuality, and the body, feminist theorists like Judith Butler call for feminism to strive toward flexibility and responsivity. This essay lays out some of the theoretical considerations that inform studies of graphic embodiment—or studies of embodiment in graphic narratives—both generally and within feminist studies, then examines several graphic texts by Tillie Walden and Élodie Durand that exemplify feminist theories of embodiment, with particular attention to the creative co-construction of embodied narratives.
