Training-Free Binary Projection Filtering for Dense Retrieval: An Empirical Study of Candidate Reduction, Ranking Stability, and Failure Risk

Dense retrieval pipelines often rely on large candidate pools before reranking, making candidate generation and downstream scoring a practical bottleneck. This paper studies training-free binary projection filtering as a lightweight pre-filter for reducing the candidate set before dense reranking. Rather than presenting it as a universally superior retrieval method or a validated speedup technique, we ask a narrower practical question: how far can the candidate pool be reduced before average top-rank quality, retained relevance, and query-level reliability begin to break down? We evaluate the approach on five BEIR datasets: SciFact, NFCorpus, FiQA, ArguAna, and TREC-COVID. The revised evaluation compares exhaustive Dense retrieval, FAISS-HNSW, FAISS-IVF-Flat, and Binary+Dense retrieval, and includes projection-dimension ablations over Db{128,256,512,1000}, candidate-budget ablations over K{50,100,200,500}, five-seed robustness analysis, and typo-perturbed queries. In addition to MRR@10, nDCG@10, and Recall@100, we report filter-stage metrics including Retained@K, catastrophic failure rate, and Best Relevant Survival. Across datasets, Binary+Dense often remains close to exhaustive Dense retrieval in average top-rank metrics at representative operating points, but the filter-stage behavior is strongly collection-dependent. Larger Db and K generally improve retained relevance and reduce catastrophic failures, but they also increase filtering cost or reduce the degree of pruning. The latency results show that structural candidate reduction does not translate into consistent end-to-end wall-clock speedup in the current Python 3.16/NumPy implementation. Taken together, the results suggest that training-free binary projection filtering is best understood as a calibration-sensitive pre-filter and failure risk analysis mechanism rather than as a replacement for Dense or ANN retrieval. This article reads the recent Chinese sci-fi blockbuster franchise The Wandering Earth (2019) and The Wandering Earth II (2023) as linked thought experiments about planetary survival as governance. It argues that the franchise operationalizes survival through administrative techniques that allocate life chances and format subjects for compliance, including selection policy, evaluative procedures, and computational judgment. Drawing on feminist social reproduction theory, affective and emotional labor scholarship, and critical posthumanism, the article shows how the films redistribute life-making work under catastrophe by routing care, sacrifice, and intergenerational continuity through gendered paternal figures. Fathers become the privileged conduits through which attachment is rendered socially legible as authorized labor, while other forms of care remain structurally secondary unless crisis forces their instrumental uptake. At the same time, the franchise is preoccupied with the limits of procedural governance. Across both installments, paternal attachment repeatedly appears as a governance problem: it cannot be fully stabilized as procedure yet becomes actionable at system stress points. The survival regime thus depends on a recurrent sequence of emergency recruitment followed by retroactive legitimation, whether through official affect, selective recognition, containment, or memorialization. This article examines memory and monuments in the science fiction Star Trek franchise as a lens for understanding commemoration technologies and how futuristic visions of memorials anticipated real ones, especially during times of conflict. To understand the cultural reciprocity of sci-fi television and contemporary commemoration of war and trauma, we investigate the interactive website produced by the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, Kan, titled Kan 7.10.360, which commemorates the victims of the 7 October 2023 Hamas massacre of civilians, soldiers, and policemen in Israel’s Gaza Envelope region. The 7.10.360 website employs advanced technologies to create what we identify as a digital “counter-monument.” By applying the concept of metamemorial science fiction relating to the Shoah, investigating its victims’ commemoration and examining the globital turn in memory work, we demonstrate that the Kan project realizes digital mnemonic practices engaged in Star Trek. We argue that the renowned series performs and anticipates three aspects of globital memory work and novel digital commemoration, also prevalent in the Kan 7.10.360 website: the personalization of memory using images; televisual testimony or documentation that mediates personal experience; and the display of objects that symbolize quotidian aspects of the victims’ lives. Virtual reality (VR) offers new opportunities for delivering psychologically meaningful conversations in digitally mediated settings. This study examined how environmental designs influence user experience during emotionally relevant self-disclosure. Fifty university students completed a within-subjects experiment in which they engaged in a structured positive and negative self-disclosure task across four immersive environments (seaside, garden, urban, and sci-fi). After each interaction, participants rated six experiential dimensions relevant to therapeutic communication: comfort, calmness, pleasantness, focus, privacy, and perceived overall suitability for psychological therapy. Repeated-measures analyses showed that nature-themed environments were rated more positively than non-nature environments across all dimensions. Although the seaside and garden environments did not differ in overall composite ratings, the seaside setting was most frequently preferred for comfort, calmness, and pleasantness in participants’ final rankings. These findings demonstrate that virtual environment design meaningfully shapes users’ emotional and interpersonal experience in VR, highlighting the value of nature-based environments for VR counselling systems and digital mental-health applications. Lung-protective ventilation and other experimental conditions raise arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) and alter pH. Short-term benefits are reported in non-infectious settings, whereas infection and/or prolonged exposure are typically harmful. This scoping review systematically maps immune-mediated effects of hypercapnia on innate immunity and alveolar epithelial repair. Scoping review per Levac et al. and PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (Open Science Framework protocol: 10.17605/OSF.IO/WV85T; post hoc). We searched original preclinical studies (in vivo/in vitro) in PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Reviews, and SciELO (2008–2023). PaCO2 (mmHg) was prioritized; %Fraction of inspired Carbon Dioxide (%FiCO2) was recorded when PaCO2 was unavailable; pH was classified as buffered/unbuffered. Data were organized by context, PaCO2, and exposure duration; synthesis used heat maps (0–120 h) and a narrative description for >120 h. Mechanistic axes extracted the following: NF-κB (canonical/non-canonical), Bcl-2/Bcl-xL–Beclin-1/autophagy, AMPK/PKA/CaMKKβ/ERK1/2 and ENaC/Na,K-ATPase trafficking, Wnt/β-catenin in AT2 cells, and miR-183/IDH2/ATP. Thirty-five studies met the inclusion criteria. In non-infectious models, a “protective window” emerged, with moderate PaCO2 and brief exposure (65–95 mmHg; ≤4–6 h), featuring NF-κB attenuation and preserved epithelial ion transport. In infectious models and/or with prolonged exposure or higher PaCO2, harmful signals predominated: reduced phagocytosis/autophagy (Bcl-2/Bcl-xL–Beclin-1 axis), AMPK/PKA/ERK1/2-mediated internalization of ENaC/Na,K-ATPase, depressed β-catenin signaling in AT2 cells, impaired alveolar fluid clearance, and increased bacterial burden. Chronic exposures (>120 h) reinforced injury. Hypercapnia is a context-, dose-, time-, and pH-dependent double-edged modulator. The safe window is narrow; standardized, parallel reporting of PaCO2 and pH—with explicit comparisons of buffered vs. unbuffered hypercapnia—is essential to guide clinical translation. Full article

The year is 2030. The internet has evolved into the metaverse. People navigate through advanced avatars, shop in digital marketplaces, and connect with others through extended reality social media platforms. Three-dimensional patient scans, multidisciplinary tele-collaborations, digital twins and metaverse health records are part of clinical practices. Younger generations regularly immerse themselves in virtual worlds, playing games and attending social events in the metaverse. This sounds like a sci-fi movie, but as the world embraces immersive technologies post-COVID-19, this future is not too far off. This article aims to provide a foundational background to immersive technologies and their applications and discuss their potential for transforming healthcare and education. Moreover, this article will introduce the metaverse ecosystem and characteristics, and its potential for health prevention, treatment, education, and research. Finally, this article will explore the synergy between generative artificial intelligence and the metaverse. As younger generations of healthcare professionals embrace this digital frontier, the metaverse’s potential in healthcare is definitely attractive. Mainstream adoption may take time, but it is imperative that healthcare professionals be equipped with interdisciplinary skills to navigate the plethora of immersive technologies in the future of healthcare. This study, conducted at Complutense Intermedia-Lab, employs a dual approach to explore university students’ use of Generative AI (GenAI), combining a survey with foresight methodologies (Sci-fi prototyping). The initial survey gathers baseline data on students’ experiences, attitudes, and concerns regarding GenAI, providing a comprehensive understanding of current practices among university students in Spain. This empirical foundation informs subsequent Sci-fi prototyping sessions, where students creatively envision future scenarios, fostering futurist thinking and deeper engagement. By integrating principles of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), this approach facilitates a nuanced exploration of GenAI’s potential impacts on education. The incorporation of both quantitative data collection and qualitative foresight methods in this study serves to navigate challenges and level opportunities of promoting the ethical and inclusive incorporation of GenAI in Higher Education, ensuring that future innovations align with societal values and needs. Study Design: This is a retrospective case series study. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether frailty contributes to functional recovery in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods: A total of 121 patients with SCI (106 cervical SCI, 15 thoracic SCI) discharged from our center over the past three years were studied. Moreover, 11-factor modified frailty index (mFI) scores, the length of hospital stays, the rate of returning home, and improvement in Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM) scores were assessed retrospectively. Results: The average age at the time of injury for all 121 cases was 59.6 years. Based on pre-injury assessments, 24 cases were categorized as the Frail group, and 97 cases were categorized as the Robust group. The Frail group had SCIM improvement rates of 16.7% and a home discharge rate of 45.8%. In contrast, the Robust group had SCIM improvement rates of 33.5% and a home discharge rate of 68.0%, with statistically significant differences between the two groups. A significant negative correlation was observed between mFI scores and SCIM improvement rates (R = −0.231, p = 0.014). Conclusions: This study suggests that individuals with pre-existing frailty before SCI experience poorer SCIM improvement rates and face challenges in returning home. Full article

R4Alz is utilized for the early detection of minor neurocognitive disorders. It was designed to assess three main dimensions of cognitive-control abilities: working-memory capacity, attentional control, and executive functioning. Objectives: To reveal the cognitive-control dimensions that can differentiate between adults and older adults with healthy cognition, people with subjective cognitive impairment, and people diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment by examining the factorial structure of the R4Alz tool. Methods: The study comprised 404 participants: (a) healthy adults (n = 192), (b) healthy older adults (n = 29), (c) people with SCI (n = 74), and (d) people diagnosed with MCI (n = 109). The R4Alz battery was administered to all participants, including tests that assess short-term memory storage, information processing, information updating in working memory, and selective, sustained and divided attention), task/rule-switching, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. Results: A two-factorial structural model was confirmed for R4Alz, with the first factor representing “fluid intelligence (FI)” and the second factor reflecting “executive functions (EF)”. Both FI and EFs discriminate among all groups. Conclusions: The R4Alz battery presents sound construct validity, evaluating abilities in FI and EF. Both abilities can differentiate very early cognitive impairment (SCI) from healthy cognitive aging and MCI. Full article

This article proposes a new approach to the nature of a core set within fantasy fiction that regards it as a speculative literature of the exploration of subjectivity, one which at its limit conjectures fresh possibilities for the subjective world. To motivate acceptance of this proposed approach, I begin by surveying the existing state of debate in the critical field. I notice the emergence of widening agreement on the idea that fantasy is a literature of the impossible. I then develop the logical implications of this widening agreement in the critical field, arguing that it entails a representational definition of fantasy literature, which implies a modal approach to the core set that defines this literary order. I suggest that the marvellous mode, the kind of writing which represents the impossible, is a broad class that includes other speculative literatures, and that what differentiates these is the referential world within which the impossible happens. The aim here is to break up monolithic conceptions of the impossible, while pointing to a motivation for developing an understanding of the specificity of a core set of fantasy texts that proceeds by way of contrasts. After explaining why I am extremely skeptical about the definition of science fiction as a “literature of the possible”, I probe descriptions of the difference between fantasy and sci-fi. I propose that whereas some science fiction is a literature of conjectural objectivity, guided by the “cognitive novum”, a significant group of fantasy texts is a literature of speculative subjectivity, guided by an “affective novum”. The Star Trek franchise’s depiction of artificial intelligence (AI) and affiliated technologies—namely, supercomputers, androids, and holograms—evokes common themes and motifs from the myths of the ancient Mediterranean. This article analyzes the mythological underpinnings of Star Trek’s historical treatment and approach to AI, from The Original Series to The Next Generation and up through the newest additions to the canon, Short Treks, and Picard. AI in Star Trek, like Data, the Doctor, and Zora, expresses qualities associated with divinity: superhuman strength, intelligence, and agelessness. These very qualities distinguish them from humans and bar them from considerations of personhood. Like the Greek gods of myth, AI can present as immortal, which fundamentally distinguishes it from mortal humans, as seen in the tensions between gods and humans in Homer’s Odyssey and the Homeric Hymns. The ancient tension between mortal and immortal is manifested in the combative relationship between organic creator and artificial creation, a common sci-fi trope, that can lead to a cycle of fear and hostility evocative of the divine generational warfare in Hesiod’s Theogony. The artificial–organic tension resonates with the contemporary audience’s conflicted experiences with evolving technologies and problematizes the show’s presentation of the evolution of humanity into a posthuman existence. Just as mythology is used to consider humanity relative to the divine, narratives about AI are fertile ground to analyze what it means to be human and establish parameters for what is decidedly not human. Graph distance measures have emerged as an effective tool for evaluating the similarity or dissimilarity between graphs. Recently, there has been a growing trend in the application of movie networks to analyze and understand movie stories. Previous studies focused on computing the distance between individual characters in narratives and identifying the most important ones. Unlike previous techniques, which often relied on representing movie stories through single-layer networks based on characters or keywords, a new multilayer network model was developed to allow a more comprehensive representation of movie stories, including character, keyword, and location aspects. To assess the similarities among movie stories, we propose a methodology that utilizes a multilayer network model and layer-to-layer distance measures. We aim to quantify the similarity between movie networks by verifying two aspects: (i) regarding many components of the movie story and (ii) quantifying the distance between their corresponding movie networks. We tend to explore how five graph distance measures reveal the similarity between movie stories in two aspects: (i) finding the order of similarity among movies within the same genre, and (ii) classifying movie stories based on genre. We select movies from various genres: sci-fi, horror, romance, and comedy. We extract movie stories from movie scripts regarding character, keyword, and location entities to perform this. Then, we compute the distance between movie networks using different methods, such as the network portrait divergence, the network Laplacian spectra descriptor (NetLSD), the network embedding as matrix factorization (NetMF), the Laplacian spectra, and D-measure. The study shows the effectiveness of different methods for identifying similarities among various genres and classifying movies across different genres. The results suggest that the efficiency of an approach on a specific network type depends on its capacity to capture the inherent network structure of that type. We propose incorporating the approach into movie recommendation systems. Full article

Neurogenic bowel dysfunction (NBD) is a common condition in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) or multiple sclerosis (MS). It usually entails constipation, difficult evacuation of the rectum, and fecal incontinence (FI); often in combination. It is highly burdensome for affected patients and is correlated with poor quality of life. The current treatment algorithm, or treatment pyramid, does not completely correspond to actual clinical practice, and the known and classical pyramid contains both treatments still in their experimental stage as well as several treatments which are not available at all treatment centers. Thus, an updated treatment algorithm is called upon, and the authors of this paper therefore propose a simplified version of the treatment pyramid, aiming to guide clinicians in treating NBD. The films teenagers watch have a significant influence on their behavior. After witnessing a film starring an actor with a particular social habit or personality trait, viewers, particularly youngsters, may attempt to adopt the actor’s behavior. This study proposes an algorithm-based technique for predicting the market potential of upcoming science fiction films. Numerous science fiction films are released annually, and working in the film industry is both profitable and delightful. Before the film’s release, it is necessary to conduct research and make informed predictions about its success. In this investigation, different machine learning methods written in MATLAB are examined to identify and forecast the future performance of movies. Using 14 methods for machine learning, it was feasible to predict how individuals would vote on science fiction films. Due to their superior performance, the fine, medium, and weighted KNN algorithms were given more consideration. In comparison to earlier studies, the KNN-adopted methods displayed greater precision (0.89–0.93), recall (0.88–0.92), and accuracy (90.1–93.0%), as well as a rapid execution rate, more robust estimations, and a shorter execution time. These tabulated statistics illustrate that the weighted KNN method is effective and trustworthy. If several KNN algorithms targeting specific viewer behavior are logically coupled, the film business and its global expansion can benefit from precise and consistent forecast outcomes. This study illustrates how prospective data analytics could improve the film industry. It is possible to develop a model that predicts a film’s success, effect, and social behavior by assessing features that contribute to its success based on historical data. Full article

This essay examines how Black girl narratives are finding and making space and place in the arena of comic books and television. With the rise in Black girl (super)hero protagonists on the comic book pages and adapted television shows, it is essential to explore the significance of their rising inclusion, visibility, and popularity and understand how they contribute to the discourse surrounding the next generation of heroes. Guided by an Afrofuturist, Black feminist, and intersectional framework, I discuss the progressive possibilities of popular media culture in depicting Black girlhood and adolescence. In Marvel Comics’ “RiRi Williams/Ironheart”, DC Comics’ “Naomi McDuffie”, and Boom! Studios’ “Eve”, these possibilities are evident. Blending aspects of adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, and STEM, each character offers fictional insight into the lived experiences of Black girl youth from historical, aesthetic, and expressive perspectives. Moreover, as talented and adventurous characters, their storylines, whether on the comic book pages or the television screen, reveal a necessary change to the landscape of popular media culture.
