Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials are increasingly used in the construction and transportation industries, generating growing volumes of waste. This study applied a machine learning model to predict the compressive strength of eco-friendly concrete incorporating recycled glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) waste. Based on 119 laboratory mixes, the model achieved a good prediction accuracy (R2 = 0.8284 on the test set). The analysis indicated that compressive strength tends to decrease at higher GFRP dosages, with relatively favorable performance observed at low contents. The two most influential factors were the water-to-cement ratio and the total GFRP content. The physical form of the recycled material was also important: powders and fibers generally showed positive effects, while coarse aggregate replacement was less effective. This machine learning-based approach offers preliminary quantitative guidance on mix design with GFRP waste and highlights opportunities for reusing industrial by-products in more sustainable concretes. The solid by-product from cement kiln gas installations, known as cement bypass dust (CBPD), is rich in chlorides, which limits the reuse of materials in cement. In this study, three types of CBPD were subjected to an extraction process to obtain a low-chlorine waste material. The relationships between the process parameters, including extraction time (1, 2, 5, 10, and 30 min), temperature (21, 45, and 90 °C), and extraction efficiency, were investigated. The chlorine removal efficiency ranged from 70% to 90%, with the optimal time and temperature identified as 1 min and 21 °C, respectively. Furthermore, a comprehensive characterization of CBPD was conducted before and after the extraction process using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR); an approach not yet extensively reported in the literature. The results demonstrated that chloride removal corresponded to an increase in concentrations of Ca, Al, Si, Mg, and Fe oxides in the solid residue. For CBPD samples with initial chloride contents of 13.65% and 15.43%, calcium content in the residue increased by approximately 40%. No linear and predictable relationship was observed between the leaching time or temperature and the release of metals in the solid residue. Full article

Apples and tomatoes are among the most consumed products all over the world, as well as the natural juices prepared from each of them. The large quantities of resulting by-products should be reused in various directions within the circular economy. In this study, apple and tomato pomaces were tested as potential biofertilizers for agricultural crops. To this end, aqueous extracts of apple pomace and tomato pomace were prepared in two concentrations (0.05% and 0.5%) and used to treat wheat caryopses and sprouts. The following were evaluated: mitotic index, genotoxic index, caryopses germination rate, and wheat sprout growth. The biotic response of wheat to treatments with the apple and tomato pomace extracts consisted of reduced mitotic activity, i.e., cytotoxicity, and the formation of genetic abnormalities, i.e., genotoxicity. The cytotoxicity and the genotoxicity were reflected at the macro level in phytotoxic effects, manifested by a reduction in the germination rate of caryopses and a decrease in the length of wheat roots and shoots. Physiological parameters were positively correlated with the mitotic index and negatively correlated with the genotoxic index. The obtained results point us not to recommend the use of unprocessed apple and tomato pomaces as biofertilizers, but, on the contrary, as bioherbicides. Full article

The dairy sector produces considerable amounts of nutrient-rich effluents, which are frequently undervalued as simple by-products or waste. In particular, Second Cheese Whey (SCW), also known as scotta, exhausted whey, or deproteinized whey, represents the liquid fraction from ricotta cheese production. Despite its abundance and high organic and saline content, SCW is often improperly discharged into terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, causing both environmental impact and resource waste. The available purification methods are expensive for dairy companies, and, at best, SCW is reused as feed or fertilizer. In recent years, increasing awareness of sustainability and circular economy principles has increased interest in the valorization of SCW. Biological treatment of SCW using microalgae represents an attractive strategy, as it simultaneously reduces the organic load and converts waste into algal biomass. This biomass can be further valorized as a source of proteins, pigments, and bioactive compounds with industrial relevance, supporting applications in food, nutraceuticals, biofuels, and cosmetics. This review, starting from analyzing the characteristics, production volumes, and environmental issues associated with SCW, focused on the potential of microalgae application for their valorization. In addition, the broader regulatory and sustainability aspects related to biomass utilization and treated SCW are considered, highlighting both the promises and limitations of microalgae-based strategies by integrating technological prospects with policy considerations. The agro-industrial sector is a key pillar of the global economy, playing a central role in the supply of food, energy, and industrial inputs. However, its production chain generates significant amounts of residues and by-products, which, if not properly managed, may cause considerable environmental impacts. In this context, the search for alternatives to reuse these materials is essential, particularly when they can be converted into high-value products. One promising application is their use as a nutrient source for microorganisms in high-value biotechnological processes, such as the production of L-Asparaginase, an important enzyme used both in mitigating acrylamide formation in foods and as a biopharmaceutical in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia therapy. This approach offers a sustainable and competitive pathway, combining robust, scalable, and economical enzyme production with waste valorization and circular economy benefits. Although interest in developing more sustainable processes is growing, supported by international agreements and strategies for the valorization of agricultural residues, important challenges remain. The variability and impurity of residues pose significant challenges for producing biological products for the pharmaceutical and food industries. In addition, meeting regulatory requirements is essential to ensure product safety and traceability, while achieving high yields is crucial to maintain production viability compared to conventional media. Overcoming these barriers is critical to enable industrial-scale application of this approach. This review provides a residue-centered revision of the most relevant agro-industrial by-products used as substrates for L-asparaginase production, systematically comparing their compositional characteristics, fermentation strategies, and reported yields. Additionally, we present a novel SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis that critically examines the technical, regulatory, and economic challenges of implementing residue-based processes on an industrial scale. The bioactive properties of a phenolic extract (PE) obtained from olive mill vegetation water (OVW) in powder formulation were utilized to enrich a meat analog composed of lentils and champignon mushrooms. The primary phenolic compounds in this extract were oleacein, verbascoside, and hydroxytyrosol. The effects on the final product were assessed over eight days of storage at 4 °C ± 2 under 12 h of light. The control samples were compared with two meat analogs enriched with ascorbic acid (AA) at 5 g kg−1 and one enriched with PE at 30 g kg−1. The physicochemical parameters (pH, aw, color, texture, and total phenol content), antioxidant activity, microbial assessment, and sensory evaluations of meat analog samples were evaluated at three different time points (T0, T4, T8) during shelf life. The PE-enriched meat analogs maintained a relatively high and stable phenolic concentration throughout their shelf life, significantly enhancing the antioxidant activities of the final product. The addition of PE also influenced the growth of Enterococcus spp., Lactococcus spp., and Lactobacillus spp. during storage. The results of the triangular test indicated perceptible differences between AA and PE meat analogs. Meanwhile, the quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) emphasized notable enhancements in odor and texture characteristics for PE-enriched samples. Plant-based meat analogs can benefit from the effective use of PE (antioxidant and sensory properties), supporting the sustainable reuse of olive oil by-products. Full article

The reuse of by-products from plant processing as feed for animals aligns with the principles of a circular economy. Feeding dairy ruminants agro-industrial by-products often alters the chemical composition and sensory characteristics of dairy items. A dual approach—classic with neuro-sensory techniques—was utilized to evaluate the effect of prickly pear by-products on the diets of dairy ewes. Fresh Pecorino cheeses made from the milk of two groups of sheep fed with and without prickly pear by-product silage were analyzed for chemical composition and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Furthermore, a neurosensory approach with consumers was used, combining electroencephalography (EEG) and temporal dominance of sensations techniques (TDS). Prickly pear silage in sheep diets did not alter the chemical composition of fresh cheese, but it did modify its fatty acids, with a significant increase in SFA (+2.60%) and PUFA (+0.33%), with a better n-6/n-3 ratio (−0.35%) due to higher omega-3 fatty acid content (+0.23%). The identification of VOCs revealed an increase in caproic acid (+27.27%) and n-caprylic acid (+6.47%) and a greater presence of sweet notes in the prickly pear-based cheeses, which exhibited a different aromatic complexity compared with the control cheeses. Even with a neuromarketing approach, sweetness remained the predominant sensation. Full article

The sustainable reuse of agro-industrial effluents requires a detailed understanding of their microbial composition, especially in the context of integrated vineyard–winery ecosystems. This study investigated the bacterial communities present in winery effluents generated during the early stages of red wine production, using samples collected at a winery in the Setúbal Peninsula, Portugal. Metagenomic analysis targeting the 16S rRNA gene was used to characterise microbial diversity and identify taxa with potential relevance for biotechnology and environmental applications. The effluents exhibited a diverse microbiome, including Prevotella paludivivens, species from the Lactobacillus genus, and members of the Clostridiaceae family, the latter representing about 5% of the total community. Functional profiling of lactic acid bacteria revealed the predominance of Oenococcus and Lactobacillus genera, highlighting adaptive traits that may be beneficial under stress conditions. These results suggest that winery effluents, often considered waste, harbour microbial communities with functional potential that extends beyond fermentation, contributing to a broader grape–wine microbial system. The findings emphasise the value of studying winemaking byproducts as reservoirs of microbial diversity and as resources for developing innovative and sustainable applications in biotechnology and environmental management within the wine industry. The growing global population and increasing water demand have intensified the urgency for efficient wastewater treatment strategies to address environmental pollution and water scarcity. Physicochemical treatment technologies remain among the most widely implemented solutions due to their high removal efficiency, operational simplicity, and relatively low cost. These processes effectively target a broad spectrum of contaminants—including suspended solids, heavy metals, recalcitrant organic compounds, and high salinity—through unit operations such as coagulation, flocculation, adsorption, and filtration. Nevertheless, they often generate concentrated waste streams that present significant disposal and environmental challenges. Applying these technologies within a circular economy framework enables wastewater reuse, resource recovery, and a reduced environmental impact. Circular strategies enable the recovery and reuse of water, energy, and materials, converting waste into valuable resources. Treated water can be safely reused, while by-products such as biogas and nutrients (e.g., phosphorus, nitrogen, and organic carbon) can be recovered and reintegrated into agricultural and industrial processes. Furthermore, advanced methods such as membrane separation and electrochemical treatments allow for the selective recovery of high-value metals. This review analyzes key physicochemical technologies for wastewater treatment and evaluates their integration into circular economy models, with a focus on waste valorization, resource recovery, and environmental impact reduction. By adopting circular approaches, wastewater treatment systems can enhance sustainability, improve economic performance, and contribute to achieving the global water and sanitation target. Currently, many foundries successfully reuse sand multiple times within their production cycle. However, when the sand can no longer be reused, it is disposed of, resulting in environmental damage and high disposal costs for the company. The present research aims to explore the potential reuse of foundry sands as fine aggregate in concrete. Since this by-product is classified as non-hazardous waste, it can offer interesting opportunities for the recycling of a material that is currently one of the most widely used in the construction industry. This paper studies the potential reuse of green sand (GS) and chemically bonded sand (CBS) as a partial replacement for natural sand (NS) in concrete. Concrete specimens made with 10%, 20%, and 30% of foundry sand were tested, and a comparative analysis was carried out with the standard mixture in terms of chemical–physical properties, workability, and mechanical properties. The results showed a reduction in the performance of concrete specimens prepared with foundry sands. The lowest reductions in the strength, which were always below 10%, were observed for a 10% inclusion rate of both GS and CBS, with slightly better performance for CBS. Performance reductions tend to increase with higher replacement rates. However, these performance reductions turn out to be acceptable for concrete used in non-structural applications. Full article

The reuse of Waste Foundry Sand (WFS) in construction remains constrained by fragmented research, unclear regulatory pathways, and inconsistent assessments of environmental safety and material performance. This study introduces a novel decision-making framework that systematically integrates mechanical performance metrics and leachate toxicity data to classify WFS into three categories: Approved, Reusable with Treatment, or Rejected. The framework is based on a bibliometric analysis of 822 publications and a meta-analysis of 45 experimental mix designs and 30 peer-reviewed leachate studies. Normalized compressive strength (NSR), water-to-cement (w/c) ratio, and heavy metal leachate concentrations are used as screening criteria. Thresholds are benchmarked against regulatory limits from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the European Union Landfill Directive, and South Africa’s National Waste Standards. Validation using field data from a foundry in Gauteng Province, South Africa, confirms the framework’s practicality and adaptability. Results indicate that over 80 percent of WFS samples comply with environmental thresholds, and mixes with 10-to-30 percent WFS substitution often outperform control specimens in terms of compressive strength. However, leachate exceedances for cobalt and lead in certain chemically bonded sands highlight the need for batch-specific evaluation and potential treatment. The proposed framework supports data-driven, transparent reuse decisions that enhance environmental compliance and promote circular material flows in the built environment. Future work should focus on digital implementation, life-cycle monitoring, and expanding the framework to other industrial byproducts. Full article

The processing of freshly cut fruits and vegetables represents an important niche for implementing circular economy principles, particularly through the reuse of washing water. This is especially relevant as post-wash water is often treated as wastewater and discarded without reuse. One promising research avenue is the use of plant-derived extracts in water sanitation processes. Their antimicrobial properties offer a natural alternative to conventional disinfectants while reducing the formation of harmful disinfection by-products. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different filter bed configurations in removing pathogens from water. These configurations included a hydrogel saturated with natural plant extracts, an ion exchange resin layer, and an activated carbon layer. The most effective composite was also tested using real process water from a fruit washing line. The test materials included concentrated extracts from oak bark (Quercus robur), willow (Salix alba), birch (Betula pendula), raspberry shoots (Rubus idaeus), tea leaves (Camellia sinensis), and linden flowers (Tilia cordata), all immobilized in hydrogel, along with activated carbon and ion-exchange resin. Water samples were artificially inoculated with six opportunistic pathogens and collected process water was also used. Samples were analyzed microbiologically at six time intervals. The composite filter (hydrogel–resin–carbon) achieved a reduction of over 2 log10 in heavily inoculated water (~108 CFU mL−1) and maintained at least a 1 log10 reduction in real process effluents. The proposed solution supports blue water footprint reduction strategies (as the system aims to decrease the demand for freshwater resources through the reuse of treated wastewater) and aligns with the principles of green processing. Grape pomace (i.e., the residual skins, seeds, and pulp left after vinification) retains up to 70% of the fruit’s original phenolic compounds and is also rich in dietary fiber. As such, because this by-product is generated in large quantities worldwide and its disposal is both technologically problematic and costly, reusing it as a food ingredient could simultaneously mitigate environmental burdens, lower winery waste-management expenses, and enhance the nutritional profile of fortified foods. In this context, this study investigated the nutritional enrichment of dark chocolate by incorporating flour produced from red (cv. Syrah) and white (cv. Arinto) grape pomace at three levels (5, 10, and 15% w/w). Formulated chocolates and controls were manufactured under industrial tempering conditions and subsequently analyzed for protein, lipids, sugars, dietary fiber, total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity (DPPH and ORAC), color, texture, and consumer perception (hedonic test). All fortified samples showed higher fiber and antioxidant activity than the control, with “White_15” showing higher fiber content (43.1%) and “Red_5” for ORAC (69,483 µmol TE/100 g) and DPPH (6587 µmol TE/100 g). Dietary fiber showed an increase in content with the increase in grape pomace incorporation, regardless of the type (red or white). Texture softening was observed in all fortified chocolates independently of the incorporation level or type (red or white). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering confirmed clear separation between control and fortified chocolates based on the parameters analyzed. Sensory evaluation with untrained panelists revealed good overall acceptability across all formulations. These findings demonstrate that grape pomace flour can be effectively valorized as a functional ingredient in dark chocolates, supporting circular economy practices in the wine and confectionery sectors while delivering products with enhanced health-promoting attributes (nutritional and antioxidant). Electric arc furnace slag is a major by-product of steelmaking, yet its industrial utilization remains limited due to its complex chemical and mineralogical composition. This study presents a hydrogen-based approach to recover metallic components from EAF slag for potential reuse in steelmaking. Laboratory experiments were conducted by melting 50 g of industrial slag samples at 1600 °C and injecting hydrogen gas through a ceramic tube into the liquid slag. After cooling, both the slag and the metallic phases were analyzed for their chemical and phase compositions. Additionally, the reduction process was modeled using a combination of approaches, including the thermochemical software FactSage 8.1, models for density, surface tension, and viscosity, as well as a diffusion model. The injection of hydrogen resulted in the reduction of up to 40% of the iron oxide content in the liquid slag. In addition, the fraction of reacted hydrogen gas was calculated. Full article

Olea europaea L. ‘Lavagnina’ is cultivated in the Eastern Ligurian coast (Italy), and during the pruning process a huge amount of pruning residues is produced. This by-product is generally disposed of by burning, despite still containing bioactive compounds. In particular, olive leaves are indeed rich in secondary metabolites, which can vary both in quality and quantity in relation to the cultivar considered and the area of cultivation. For this reason, we aimed to carry out a pharmacognostic study of the pruned leaves of the unexplored local cultivar ‘Lavagnina’, evaluating the possibility of reusing this by-product for new health applications. The micromorphological characterization was conducted by light and scanning electron microscopy. ‘Lavagnina’ leaf was micromorphologically similar to that of other olive cultivars; however, it differed in terms of midrib structure. Leaf extracts were obtained using solvents of increasing polarity (petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol) and the food-grade solvent, 70% ethanol. A high antioxidant activity was found only for the methanolic (ME) and hydroalcoholic (HAE) extracts, and, therefore, they were then characterized from a phytochemical point of view by LC-ESI-HR-MS. Such analysis allowed the identification of secondary metabolites belonging mainly to secoiridoids, flavonoids, and iridoids. Overall, the HAE had the highest antioxidant activity (17.3 ± 0.6 μg/mL), and it is, therefore, the best candidate for health applications related to a protective effect on a variety of inflammation-related diseases, also considering that inflammation may play a role in cancer progression.
