In comparative analyses, specific features of the Spanish welfare and housing systems have often been emphasized. The case of Barcelona illustrates the extent to which these features are the result of a long-standing historical trajectory and the decisive impact of the challenges and policy responses adopted during Franco’s lengthy, dark, and gloomy regime. This period marked a significant shift, not only due to the persistent shortage of social rental housing, but also because of the early consolidation of a homeownership culture and its dominance in working-class suburban areas—a legacy that is completely different from that of the welfare states of Western Europe. Through a review of the literature and the analysis of primary sources, ongoing research on Barcelona seeks to clarify the factors and processes that led to this transformation, as well as its evolution during the democratic period, within an international context of economic liberalization and the dismantling of the welfare state. Housing affordability is a major determinant of quality of life. Despite the relatively high GDP per capita in Hong Kong (HK) (USD 460,000), about one-third of the population lives in public rental housing (PRH) because they cannot afford private housing. Existing research estimating the benefits of PRH or direct housing supports faces methodological limitations. Addressing this research gap, our study adopts an “in-kind subsidy” approach to estimate the monetary value of PRH, quantifying how much less PRH households might save monthly if they resided in private rental units, after controlling for confounding factors. This paper examines the association of housing types and household savings by applying ordinary least squares (OLS) regression to compare savings among PRH tenants, non-PRH tenants, and mortgage-free homeowners, based on seven rounds of the Household Expenditure Survey data (1989/1990 to 2019/2020). PRH tenants saved significantly more than private housing tenants. In terms of household savings, the value of HK PRH has steadily increased from HKD 4483 in 1999/2000, to HKD 9187 in 2019/2020. For every dollar increase in income, a household would have the propensity to save 0.7 dollars in 2019/2020. Given limited public resources, our findings offer robust evidence regarding the value of public housing. The results underscore the importance of the equitable allocation and effective management of current PRH stock to enhance the upward mobility of low- to middle-income households amid limited housing resources in HK. The purpose of this study is to synthesize existing peer-reviewed literature on fashion renting and provide insights into its role within the broader framework of sustainable consumption and business practices within different cultural contexts, while also guiding future research efforts. This review includes only peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters in English, with the search conducted up to 31 March 2025. A total of 95 academic papers published between 2010 and 2025 were analyzed to explore the evolving landscape of fashion rental consumption and business practices. NVivo 14 was used for the analysis of the collected literature. The findings revealed six key motivating benefits and six significant barriers that influence consumer participation in fashion renting. Additionally, five success factors and four critical challenges were identified as shaping the development of the fashion rental market. This research represents the first attempt to synthesize literature from both the consumer and business perspectives of fashion renting. The findings provide a comprehensive understanding of market dynamics related to fashion rental consumption and business practices, shedding light on the key factors that support the sustainability of fashion rental businesses as well as the challenges they face. Both theoretical and practical implications are discussed, offering valuable guidance for researchers and fashion industry stakeholders. Full article

Urban tourism has experienced significant growth driven by platforms such as Airbnb, yet the relationship between short-term rental (STR) location and guest mobility remains underexplored. In this study, a structured survey of STR guests in Madrid during 2024 was administered face-to-face through property managers and luggage-storage services to examine factors influencing public transport (PT) use. Responses on bus and metro usage were combined into a three-level ordinal variable and modeled using ordered logistic regression against tourist demographics, trip characteristics, and accommodation attributes, including geocoded location zones. The results indicate that first-time and international visitors are less likely to use PT at high levels, while tourists visiting more points of interest and those who rated PT importance highly when choosing accommodation are significantly more frequent users. Accommodation in the central almond or periphery correlates positively with higher PT use compared to the city center. Distances to transit stops were not significant predictors, reflecting overall network accessibility. These findings suggest that enhancing PT connectivity in peripheral areas could support the spatial dispersion of tourism benefits and improve sustainable mobility for STR guests. Full article

Understanding agricultural production dynamics is vital for addressing global food security in the least developed countries. In Senegal, the issues of rural development and enhancing agricultural productivity are still less understood. Using survey data (n = 600) from the Thiès region, this study aims to explore factors that influence agricultural productivity in Senegal. The multinomial probit model is estimated using maximum simulated likelihood (MSL) methods. This approach is necessary due to the presence of multiple-choice categories. The results highlight that young farmers aged 18–30 are less likely to achieve high production (>10 tons) compared to their older counterparts (p < 0.01). In contrast, older farmers (31–60) report higher income stability (p < 0.05). Education levels also impact production, with farmers having lower or upper secondary education being less likely to attain high production than illiterate farmers (p < 0.05). Receiving subsidies reduces the likelihood of high production (p < 0.01). Larger landholdings (>1 ha) correlate with lower production odds (p < 0.01), suggesting diminishing returns. Gender disparities are evident, with male farmers being 45.6% more likely to report income declines (p < 0.1). Marginal effects show that acquiring land through rental or purchase significantly boosts income (p < 0.01), while traditional ploughing increases the sown area (p < 0.01). Policymakers should enhance training in agriculture, improve subsidies, secure land tenure, and promote certified seeds to boost productivity. This study highlights the need for targeted policies on training, subsidies, land tenure, and sustainable practices to enhance Senegal’s agricultural productivity. Full article

Background: Electric motorized rental scooters (ES) were introduced in Italy in 2019 as an alternative form of urban transportation, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. As their popularity has grown, a parallel increase in ES-related injuries has been observed. This study aims to investigate the types and patterns of ES-related injuries and to identify potentially modifiable risk factors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all consecutive patients admitted to the Emergency Department of Policlinico Umberto I in Rome between January 2020 and December 2022 following ES-related trauma. Collected data included demographics, injury mechanisms and types, helmet use, Injury Severity Score (ISS), blood alcohol levels, and patient outcomes. Results: A total of 411 individuals presented to the Emergency Department due to ES-related injuries, either as riders or pedestrians. The mean age was 31 years (range: 2–93); 38 patients (9%) were under 18 years of age. Fifty-six accidents (14%) occurred during work-related commutes. Only three riders (0.7%) wore helmets, and nine patients (2%) had blood alcohol levels > 0.50 g/L. Cranial injuries (134 cases, 32%) and upper limb fractures (93 cases, 23%) were the most frequently reported serious injuries. The mean ISS was 4.5; 17 patients (4%) had an ISS ≥ 16. A total of 270 orthopedic injuries and 118 (29%) maxillofacial injuries were documented. Head trauma was reported in 115 patients (28%), with 19 cases classified as severe traumatic brain injuries. Twenty-three patients (5.5%) were hospitalized, three (0.7%) required intensive care, and one patient (0.2%) died. Conclusions: ES-related injuries are becoming increasingly common and present a significant public health concern. A nationwide effort is warranted to improve rider safety through mandatory helmet use, protective equipment, alcohol consumption control, and stricter enforcement of speed regulations. Full article

With the rapid development of industrial internet, blockchain, and other new-generation information technology, the shared manufacturing model provides a new way to address the problems of low resource utilization of the traditional manufacturing industry and serious duplication of construction through the mechanism of collaborative resource sharing. Concurrently, to meet the requirements of sustainable development, manufacturing enterprises need to balance economic efficiency with production efficiency in their production practices. This study investigates an identical parallel machine offline scheduling problem with rental costs and shared service costs of shared machines. In machine renting, manufacturers with a certain number of identical parallel machines will incur fixed rental costs, unit variable rental costs, and shared service costs when renting the shared machines. The objective is to minimize the sum of the makespan and total sharing costs. To address this problem, an integer linear programming model is established, and several properties of the optimal solution are provided. A heuristic algorithm based on the number of rented machines is designed. Finally, numerical simulation experiments are conducted to compare the proposed heuristic algorithm with a genetic algorithm and the longest processing time (LPT) rule. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed heuristic algorithm in terms of calculation accuracy and efficiency. Additionally, the experimental findings reveal that the renting and scheduling results of the machines are influenced by various factors, such as the manufacturer’s production conditions, the characteristics of the jobs to be processed, production objectives, rental costs, and shared service costs. This study analyses how the intensive use of short-term rentals (STRs) in the tourism sector contributes to the transformation and touristification of rural areas in mature tourist destinations, using the island of Mallorca, Spain, as a case study. Based on growth machine theory, the analysis innovatively examines the factors driving the expansion of STRs in rural spaces, with a focus on economic, social, and territorial dynamics. The research hypothesis is that the proliferation of STRs acts as a key element in rural touristification. Using a combination of spatial and temporal indicators, the study identifies patterns of intensification and dispersion of STRs in rural areas, offering a comparison with other Mediterranean destinations, particularly in Spain. The results show that STRs have generated significant spatial impacts, leading to the displacement of agricultural land use and increasing tensions within local communities, mainly due to rising housing prices. The study highlights the need to implement spatial planning policies that restrain the uncontrolled expansion of STRs, ensure sustainable tourism planning, and promote housing policies that protect residents from the negative effects of touristification. Various scenarios for the evolution of STRs are proposed depending on their regulation. Full article

Pilot policy relating to the building of rental houses on collectively owned land is crucial for forming integrated urban and rural construction land markets and promoting rural revitalization. However, inequalities in the distribution of benefits may impede pilot projects. This paper employs a mixed-methods approach combining social network analysis, case study, and game theory to analyze the strategic decisions of key stakeholders in pilot policy, aiming to identify challenges and barriers to its implementation. Local governments, rural collective economic organizations, and enterprises are defined as the three key stakeholders, according to social network analysis. The findings suggest that the successful implementation of pilot policy requires cooperation among at least two stakeholders. Key factors influencing stakeholders include policy risk, market risk, the local government’s stance on the pilot policy, communication, coordination costs, the capabilities of collective economic organizations, and expected benefits, all of which can lead to conflicts among stakeholders. Strategies to support equilibrium of the interests of all parties are proposed, in order to promote cooperation among these three core categories of stakeholders. Full article

Public rental housing complexes in South Korea have played a critical role in addressing housing needs since their introduction in 1989, initially prioritizing rapid quantitative supply. However, challenges such as limited housing quality and evolving socio-economic demands have prompted a shift toward emphasizing qualitative improvements in residential environments. This study investigates changes in residential building layouts in public rental housing complexes constructed during the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s to understand how planning practices have evolved over time. Using a structured analysis framework, this research examined layout types (orthogonal, parallel, staggered, and mixed) and key planning elements (density, building height, orientation, and building forms) across 24 complexes. The findings reveal a transition from orthogonal layouts with uniform linear flat-type buildings in the 1990s to mixed and parallel layouts incorporating tower-type buildings in the 2000s, reflecting an increased emphasis on density and aesthetics. By the 2010s, parallel layouts persisted but featured diverse building forms, such as modified flat-type buildings and L-shaped configurations, along with variations in floor heights, enhancing spatial efficiency and visual appeal. These changes in the layout forms of residential buildings are particularly driven by the combination of planning characteristics, such as building forms and orientation as well as socio-historical factors. Relevant legal frameworks and institutional systems, such as district unit plans, have played a significant role in shaping these transformations. This study provides insights into the evolution of public housing planning and offers guidance for sustainable and high-quality urban housing development. Full article

There is growing recognition that build-to-rent (BTR), a novel institutional asset class, could improve rental affordability and housing choice in Australia. Despite favourable market conditions and increasing demand, Australia’s BTR sector remains underdeveloped compared to the US and UK. Although the asset class has attracted significant foreign institutional capital, there is little interest from domestic institutional funds. This contrasting investment behaviour between foreign and domestic funds has brought a new dimension to the debates on BTR in Australia. The study uses qualitative research design to examine institutional investor behaviour towards BTR in Australia. Interviews were conducted with experienced BTR investors across three countries—Australia, the US, and the UK—to understand the barriers and investment behaviour towards BTR. The study finds that the key barriers hindering BTR growth in Australia include unfavourable tax treatment, complex planning processes, and insufficient affordable housing incentives. Institutional investors’ decisions are influenced by firm characteristics, operational capabilities, and risk attitudes. Due to risk considerations, Australian superfunds prefer stabilised assets over new developments. Also, sustainability and ESG factors are increasingly important considerations in BTR investment decisions. The research highlights the need for a supportive regulatory environment, efficient property management, and innovative financing solutions to boost BTR investments. To accelerate BTR growth in Australia, policymakers should address tax disparities, streamline planning processes, and enhance affordable housing incentives. Developing BTR-responsive financial instruments could reduce financing costs and attract more institutional capital to the sector. Full article

Governments are encouraging public transportation and bicycle-sharing systems to promote sustainable development and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the expansion of Taipei’s YouBike program, many stations frequently run out of bikes or docking spaces, and current redistribution strategies are suboptimal. This study proposes a novel approach to optimize YouBike allocation under resource constraints. We first used K-means clustering to group stations with similar rental profiles, reducing the number of models needed. A random forest model selected key crowd grid factors as input variables for a long short-term memory (LSTM) prediction model to accurately predict demand patterns, including during special events or weather changes. A genetic algorithm then determined optimal station configurations and provided return station recommendations, considering user destinations and station dock ratios, while minimizing manual redistribution. Simulations demonstrated that the proposed system meets user needs, enhances operational efficiency, and significantly reduces manual redistribution costs. Our methods have practical applicability for YouBike managers, indicating that user compliance with recommendations can offset the need for manual redistribution and support the current policy of recommending stations within 600 m of the user’s destination. The rapid urbanization and pursuit of sustainability have elevated shared mobility as a cornerstone of smart cities. Among its modalities, scooter-sharing has gained popularity for its convenience and eco-friendliness, yet it faces significant adoption barriers. This study investigates the challenges to scooter-sharing systems within smart cities, focusing on the Silesian region of Poland as a case study. It aims to identify region-specific barriers and opportunities for scooter-sharing adoption in Central and Eastern Europe and to provide insights into its long-term development trends and potential challenges. Using comprehensive statistical methods, including factor analysis and regression models, this study identifies key barriers such as insufficient bike paths, poor path conditions, inadequate signage, fleet maintenance issues, and complex rental processes. External factors like adverse weather and heavy traffic, coupled with health and safety concerns, further hinder adoption, particularly among vulnerable populations. Additionally, the study explores future trends in scooter-sharing, emphasizing the role of advanced technologies, adaptive urban planning, and sustainable fleet management in ensuring long-term feasibility. Drawing on global case studies, it underscores the need for tailored infrastructural investments, advanced fleet management, and user-centric policies to align scooter-sharing systems with smart city goals of sustainability, accessibility, and improved mobility. These findings offer actionable insights for policymakers and service providers striving to integrate scooter-sharing into the evolving landscape of urban mobility. Full article

This study investigates the environmental and socioeconomic dimensions of domestic cycling tourism in Slovenia, focusing on “double pollution” and “greenhushing” practices. The aim is to evaluate the sustainability of cycling tourism by examining its indirect environmental impacts, particularly emissions from ancillary travel behaviours such as car usage to reach cycling destinations. Utilizing data from 2011 to 2021, this research employs factor analyses using the principal component analysis (PCA) extraction method and vector autoregression (VAR) modelling to explore relationships between key socioeconomic, environmental, and tourism-related variables. This study identifies three common factors influencing cycling tourism: (1) socioeconomic and urban dynamics, (2) tourism-driven environmental factors, and (3) climatic sustainability challenges. Results highlight that cycling tourism contributes to emissions due to associated car travel, counteracting its eco-friendly image. Findings reveal that favourable economic conditions and urbanisation drive tourism demand, while increased tourist arrivals correlate with higher emissions. This study also uncovers greenhushing, where stakeholders underreport the environmental costs of cycling tourism, leading to mistaken perceptions of its sustainability. This study concludes that, while domestic cycling tourism supports economic growth and health, its environmental benefits are compromised by ancillary emissions. Transparent environmental reporting, enhanced public transport, and local bike rental systems are recommended to mitigate these challenges and align cycling tourism with Slovenia’s sustainability goals. This study investigates the housing preferences and its impact on living conditions of migrant industrial workers in the fringe areas of Bengaluru, India, where rapid urbanization and economic expansion have led to a significant demand for affordable housing. Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a multi-criteria decision-making framework, this study analyzed key factors influencing housing choices, such as proximity to the workplace, affordability, and access to essential amenities. Data were collected from 400 respondents through a combination of surveys, complimented by field observations and expert consultations. The findings indicate a strong preference for affordable housing close to employment hubs, with “proximity to workplace” emerging as the most critical criterion with a priority weight of 43.36%, followed by “affordability” with a priority weight of 12.47%. However, field insights reveal a trade-off with housing quality and living conditions. Many migrant workers are confined to overcrowded and poorly ventilated rental units, often provided by employers, which compromises their health and well-being. Our results contribute to the understanding of urban housing challenges in rapidly growing economies and emphasize the importance of sustainable, health-oriented housing policies that can mitigate environmental impacts and improve the quality of life for low-income migrant populations.
