Air–sea interactions play a pivotal role in shaping cyclone development and evolution. In this context, this study investigates the role of ocean optical properties and solar radiation penetration in modulating subsurface heat content and their subsequent influence on the intensity of Mediterranean cyclones. Using a regional coupled ocean–wave–atmosphere model, we conducted sensitivity experiments for Storm Daniel (2023) comparing two solar radiation penetration schemes in the ocean model component: one with a constant light attenuation depth and another with chlorophyll-dependent attenuation based on satellite estimates. Results show that the chlorophyll-driven radiative heating scheme consistently produces warmer sea surface temperatures (SSTs) prior to cyclone onset, leading to stronger cyclones characterized by deeper minimum mean sea-level pressure, intensified convective activity, and increased rainfall. However, post-storm SST cooling is also amplified due to stronger wind stress and vertical mixing, potentially influencing subsequent local atmospheric conditions. Overall, this work demonstrates that ocean bio-optical processes can meaningfully impact Mediterranean cyclone behavior, highlighting the importance of using appropriate underwater light attenuation schemes and ocean color remote sensing data in coupled models. The adoption of digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), has emerged as a key strategy to improve efficiency, sustainability, and productivity in the agricultural sector, especially in contexts of modernization and digital transformation in developing regions. This study analyzes the key factors influencing the adoption of IoT technologies by farmers in the province of Guayas, Ecuador, and their impact on agricultural yields. The research is grounded in innovation diffusion theory and technology acceptance models, which emphasize the role of perception, usability, training, and economic viability in digital adoption. A total of 250 surveys were administered, with 232 valid responses (92.8% response rate), reflecting strong interest from the agricultural sector in digital transformation and precision agriculture. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), the results confirm that general perception of IoT (β = 0.514), practical functionality (β = 0.488), and technical training (β = 0.523) positively influence adoption, while high implementation costs negatively affect it (β = −0.651), all of which are statistically significant (p < 0.001). Furthermore, adoption has a strong positive effect on agricultural yield (β = 0.795). The model explained a high percentage of variance in both adoption (R2 = 0.771) and performance (R2 = 0.706), supporting its predictive capacity. These findings underscore the need for public and private institutions to implement targeted training and financing strategies to overcome economic barriers and foster the sustainable integration of IoT technologies in Ecuadorian agriculture. Understanding the entrepreneurial profile is essential for developing effective regional policies that promote business growth. The path of an entrepreneur is shaped not only by individual decisions but also by the inherent risks of managing a business. This study aims to identify the characteristics of entrepreneurs at the regional level, specifically highlighting the impact of accumulated experience in their fields. Our central hypothesis asserts that entrepreneurial experience significantly influences how business owners perceive and respond to economic challenges. Utilizing survey data from 120 entrepreneurs in Romania’s Center Region (a NUTS 2 area), we reveal that entrepreneurial experience profoundly affects perceptions of key business challenges, such as legislative instability, taxation predictability, governmental support strategies, and access to SME financing. Importantly, our findings demonstrate that entrepreneurs with less than 10 years of experience express greater concerns about these challenges compared to their more seasoned peers. This novel insight highlights the need for tailored policy interventions aimed at enhancing regional economic resilience and fostering entrepreneurial sustainability. By addressing the specific needs of less experienced entrepreneurs, our study contributes to a deeper understanding of how experience shapes business dynamics in the region. Full article

Accurately predicting the next location of urban individuals is a central issue in human mobility research. Human mobility exhibits diverse patterns, requiring the integration of spatiotemporal contexts for location prediction. In this context, multi-view learning has become a prominent method in location prediction. Despite notable advances, current methods still face challenges in effectively capturing non-spatial proximity of regional preferences, complex temporal periodicity, and the ambiguity of location semantics. To address these challenges, we propose a representation-enhanced multi-view learning network (ReMVL-Net) for location prediction. Specifically, we propose a community-enhanced spatial representation that transcends geographic proximity to capture latent mobility patterns. In addition, we introduce a multi-granular enhanced temporal representation to model the multi-level periodicity of human mobility and design a rule-based semantic recognition method to enrich location semantics. We evaluate the proposed model using mobile phone data from Fuzhou. Experimental results show a 2.94% improvement in prediction accuracy over the best-performing baseline. Further analysis reveals that community space plays a key role in narrowing the candidate location set. Moreover, we observe that prediction difficulty is strongly influenced by individual travel behaviors, with more regular activity patterns being easier to predict. Full article

This study investigates the effects of key atmospheric features on mineral dust emissions and transport in the Sahara–Sahel region, focusing on the Bodélé Depression, during June 2006 and 2011. We use a combination of high-resolution atmospheric simulations (AROME model), satellite observations (MODIS), and reanalysis data (ERA5, ECMWF) to examine the roles of the low-level jet (LLJ), Saharan heat low (SHL), Intertropical Discontinuity (ITD), and African Easterly Jet (AEJ) in modulating dust activity. Our results reveal significant interannual variability in aerosol optical depth (AOD) between the two periods, with a marked decrease in June 2011 compared to June 2006. The LLJ emerges as a dominant factor in dust uplift over Bodélé, with its intensity strongly influenced by local topography, particularly the Tibesti Massif. The position and intensity of the SHL also play crucial roles, affecting the configuration of monsoon flow and Harmattan winds. Analysis of wind patterns shows a strong negative correlation between AOD and meridional wind in the Bodélé region, while zonal wind analysis emphasizes the importance of the AEJ and Tropical Easterly Jet (TEJ) in dust transport. Surprisingly, we observe no significant correlation between ITD position and AOD measurements, highlighting the complexity of dust emission processes. This study is the first to combine climatological context and case studies to demonstrate the effects of African monsoon variability on dust uplift at intra-seasonal timescales, associated with the modulation of ITD latitude position, SHL, LLJ, and AEJ. Our findings contribute to understanding the complex relationships between large-scale atmospheric features and dust dynamics in this key source region, with implications for improving dust forecasting and climate modeling efforts. This study examines the development of the digital economy and society in the Republic of Kazakhstan by combining international benchmarking with a context-specific national framework. It highlights the limitations of existing global indices such as DESI, NRI, and EGDI in capturing the structural and institutional dimensions of digital transformation in emerging economies. To address this gap, the study introduces a novel composite metric, the Index of Digital Economy Development (IDED), which integrates five sub-indices: infrastructure, usage, human capital, economic digitization, and transformation effectiveness. The methodology involves comparative index analysis, the construction of the IDED, and statistical validation through a public opinion survey and regression modeling. Key findings indicate that cybersecurity is a critical yet under-represented component of digital development, showing strong empirical correlations with DESI scores in benchmark countries. The results also highlight Kazakhstan’s strengths in digital public services and internet access, contrasted with weaknesses in business digitization and innovation. The proposed IDED offers a more comprehensive and policy-relevant tool for assessing digital progress in transitional economies. This study contributes to the literature by proposing a replicable index structure and providing empirical evidence for the inclusion of cybersecurity in national digital economy assessments. The aim of the study is to assess Kazakhstan’s digital economy development by addressing limitations in global measurement frameworks. Methodologically, it combines comparative index analysis, the construction of a national composite index (IDED), and statistical validation using a regional survey and regression analysis. The findings reveal both strengths and gaps in Kazakhstan’s digital landscape, particularly in cybersecurity and SME digitalization. The IDED introduces an innovative, context-sensitive framework that enhances the measurement of digital transformation in transitional economies. Full article

Agricultural production in southern Angola faces challenges due to unsustainable practices, including inefficient use of water, fertilizers, and machinery, resulting in low yields and environmental degradation. Therefore, clear and measurable indicators are needed to guide farmers toward more sustainable practices. The scientific literature insufficiently addresses this issue, leaving a significant gap in the evaluation of key performance indicators (KPIs) that can guide good agricultural practices (GAPs) adapted to the context of southern Angola, with the goal of promoting a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector. So, the objective of this study is to identify and assess KPIs capable of supporting the selection of GAPs suitable for maize, potato, and tomato cultivation in the context of southern Angolan agriculture. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted, screening 2720 articles and selecting 14 studies that met defined inclusion criteria. Five KPIs were identified as the most relevant: gross margin, net profit, water use efficiency, nitrogen use efficiency, and machine energy. These indicators were analyzed and standardized to evaluate their contribution to sustainability across different GAPs. Results show that organic fertilizers are the most sustainable option for maize, drip irrigation for potatoes, and crop rotation for tomatoes in southern Angola because of their efficiency in low-resource environments. A clear, simple, and effective representation of the KPIs was developed to be useful in communicating to farmers and policy makers on the selection of the best GAPs in the cultivation of different crops. The study proposes a validated KPI-based methodology for assessing sustainable agricultural practices in developing regions such as southern Angola, aiming to lead to greater self-sufficiency and economic stability in this sector. In this study, we examine the impact of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) on firm environmental performance, aiming to address the gap in research and guide firms, investors, and policymakers toward more environmentally conscious decision-making in M&A. Using panel data from Chinese A-share listed firms (2008–2022), we estimate a two-way fixed effect model. The Propensity Score Matching and the instrumental variable method address potential endogeneity concerns, and robustness checks validate the findings. We found that M&As have a significantly positive effect on firm environmental performance, with heterogeneous impacts across regions, industries, and M&A types. The environmental benefits are most pronounced in heavily polluting industries and hybrid M&A deals. Eastern China shows more modest improvements. The results of mechanism tests revealed that M&As enhance environmental performance primarily by boosting total factor productivity and fostering innovation. This study offers a novel perspective by linking M&A activities to environmental sustainability, enriching the literature on both M&As and corporate environmental performance. We show that even conventional M&A deals (not sustainability-focused) can improve environmental performance through operational synergies. Expanding beyond polluting industries, we reveal how sector characteristics shape M&A’s environmental impacts. We identify practical mechanisms through which standard M&A activities can advance sustainability goals, helping firms balance economic and environmental objectives. It provides empirical evidence from China, an emerging market with distinct institutional and regulatory contexts. The findings offer guidance for firms engaging in M&A to strategically improve sustainability performance. Policymakers can leverage these insights to design incentives for M&A in pollution-intensive industries, aligning economic growth with environmental goals. By demonstrating that M&As can enhance environmental outcomes, this study supports the potential for market-driven mechanisms to contribute to broader societal sustainability objectives, such as reduced industrial pollution and greener production practices. This study investigates the factors influencing school trip mode choice among senior high school students in the Chiang Rai urban area, Chiang Rai, Thailand, under normal and adverse weather conditions. Utilizing data from 472 students across six extra-large urban schools, a Multinomial Logit (MNL) regression model was applied to examine the effects of socio-demographic attributes, household vehicle ownership, travel distance, and spatial variables on mode selection. The results revealed notable modal shifts during adverse weather, with motorcycle usage decreasing and private vehicle reliance increasing, while school bus usage remained stable, highlighting its role as a resilient transport option. Car ownership emerged as a strong enabler of modal flexibility, whereas students with limited access to private transport demonstrated reduced adaptability. Additionally, increased waiting and travel times during adverse conditions underscored infrastructure and service vulnerabilities, particularly for mid-distance travelers. The findings suggest an urgent need for transport policies that promote inclusive and climate-resilient mobility systems, particularly in the context of Chiang Rai, including expanded school bus services, improved first-mile connectivity, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure. This study contributes to the literature by addressing environmental variability in school travel behavior and offers actionable insights for sustainable transport planning in secondary cities and border regions. The abandoned goaf resulting from coal resource integration in China poses a significant threat to coal mine safety. The transient electromagnetic method (TEM) has emerged as a crucial technology for detecting goafs in coal mines due to its adaptable equipment and efficient implementation. In recent years, small-loop TEM has demonstrated high resolution and adaptability in challenging terrains with vegetation, such as coal mine ponding areas, karst regions, and reservoir seepage scenarios. By considering the sedimentary characteristics of coal seams and addressing the resistivity changes encountered in single-point inversion, a joint optimization inversion process incorporating lateral weighting factors and vertical roughness constraints has been developed to enhance the connectivity between adjacent survey points and improve the continuity of inversion outcomes. Through an OCCAM inversion approach, the regularization factor is dynamically determined by evaluating the norms of the data objective function and model objective function in each iteration, thereby reducing the reliance of inversion results on the initial model. Using the Xiaolong Coal Mine as a geological context, the impact of lateral and vertical weighting factors on the inversion outcomes of high- and low-resistivity structural models is examined through a control variable method. The analysis reveals that optimal inversion results are achieved with a combination of a lateral weighting factor of 0.5 and a vertical weighting factor of 0.1, ensuring both result continuity and accurate depiction of vertical and lateral electrical interfaces. The practical application of this approach validates its effectiveness, offering theoretical support and technical assurance for old goaf detection in coal mines, thereby holding significant engineering value. The landscapes of the Arctic seem endless. But they are also subject to anthropogenic impact, especially in urbanized and industrial ecosystems. The population of the Arctic zone of Russia is extremely urbanized, and up to 84% of the population lives in cities and industrial settlements. In this regard, we studied the background soils of forests and tundras and the soils of settlements. The main signs of the urbanogenic morphogenesis of soils associated with the transportation of material for urban construction are revealed. The peculiarities of soils of recreational, residential, and industrial zones of urbanized ecosystems are described. The questions of diversity and the classification of soils are discussed. The specificity of bulk soils used in the construction of industrial structures in the context of the initial stage of soil formation is considered. For the first time, soils and soil cover of settlements in the central and southern parts of the Yamal region are described in the context of traditional pedology. It is shown that the construction of new soils and grounds can lead to both decreases and increases in biodiversity, including the appearance of protected species. Surprisingly, the forms of urban soil formation in the Arctic are very diversified in terms of morphology, as well as in the ecological functions performed by soils. The urbanization of past decades has drastically changed the local soil cover. Full article

In an era where digitalization shapes economic and social landscapes, the intersection of digital skills, ethics, and integrity plays a crucial role in understanding the vulnerability of youth classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). This study explores how risky internet use and digital skill gaps contribute to socio-economic exclusion, integrating a multivariate and spatial approach to assess regional disparities in Europe. This study adopts a systems thinking perspective to explore digital exclusion as an emergent outcome of multiple interrelated subsystems. The research employs logistic regression, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Promax rotation, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to examine the impact of digital behaviors on NEET status. Using Eurostat data aggregated at the country level for the period (2000–2023) across 28 European countries, this study evaluates 24 digital indicators covering social media usage, instant messaging, daily internet access, data protection awareness, and digital literacy levels. The findings reveal that low digital skills significantly increase the likelihood of being NEET, while excessive social media and internet use show mixed effects depending on socio-economic context. A strong negative correlation between digital security practices and NEET status suggests that youths with a higher awareness of online risks are less prone to socio-economic exclusion. The GIS analysis highlights regional disparities, where countries with limited digital access and lower literacy levels exhibit higher NEET rates. Digital exclusion is not merely a technological issue but a multidimensional socio-economic challenge. Evaluation and Application of the MaxEnt Model to Quantify L. nanum Habitat Distribution Under Current and Future Climate Conditions

Understanding alpine plants’ survival and reproduction is crucial for their conservation in climate change. Based on 423 valid distribution points, this study utilizes the MaxEnt model to predict the potential habitat and distribution dynamics of Leontopodium nanum under both current and future climate scenarios, while clarifying the key factors that influence its distribution. The primary ecological drivers of distribution are altitude (2886.08 m–5576.14 m) and the mean temperature of the driest quarter (−6.60–1.55 °C). Currently, the suitable habitat area is approximately 520.28 × 104 km2, covering about 3.5% of the global land area, concentrated mainly in the Tibetan Plateau, with smaller regions across East and South Asia. Under future climate scenarios, low-emission (SSP126), suitable areas are projected to expand during the 2050s and 2070s. High-emission (SSP585), suitable areas may decrease by 50%, with a 66.07% reduction in highly suitable areas by the 2070s. The greatest losses are expected in the south-eastern Tibetan Plateau. Regarding dynamic habitat changes, by the 2050s, newly suitable areas will account for 51.09% of the current habitat, while 68.26% of existing habitat will become unsuitable. By the 2070s, newly suitable areas will rise to 71.86% of the current total, but the loss of existing areas will exceed these gains, particularly under the high-emission scenario. The centroid of suitable habitats is expected to shift northward, with migration distances ranging from 23.94 km to 342.42 km. The most significant shift is anticipated under the SSP126 scenario by the 2070s. This study offers valuable insights into the distribution dynamics of L. nanum and other alpine species under the context of climate change. From a conservation perspective, it is recommended to prioritize the protection and restoration of vegetation in key habitat patches or potential migration corridors, restrict overgrazing and infrastructure development, and maintain genetic diversity and dispersal capacity through assisted migration and population genetic monitoring when necessary. These measures aim to provide a robust scientific foundation for the comprehensive conservation and sustainable management of the grassland ecosystem on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Full article

Morocco is facing a situation of alarming water stress, aggravated by climate change, overexploitation of resources, and unequal distribution of water, placing the country among the most vulnerable to water scarcity in the MENA region. This study aims to investigate the dynamic relationship between economic growth and water stress in Morocco while highlighting the importance of integrated water management and adaptive economic policies to enhance resilience to water scarcity. A mixed methodology, integrating both qualitative and quantitative methods, was adopted to overview the economic–environmental Moroccan context, and to empirically analyze the GDP (gross domestic product) and water stress in Morocco over the period 1975–2021 using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach. The empirical analysis is based on annual data sourced from the World Bank and FAO databases for GDP, agricultural value added, renewable internal freshwater resources, and water productivity. The results suggest that water productivity has a significant positive effect on economic growth, while the impacts of agricultural value added and renewable water resources are less significant and vary depending on the model specification. Diagnostic tests confirm the reliability of the ARDL model; however, the presence of outliers in certain years reflects the influence of exogenous shocks, such as severe droughts or policy changes, on the Moroccan economy. The key contribution of this study lies in the fact that it is the first to analyze the intrinsic link between economic growth and the environmental aspect of water in Morocco. According to our findings, it is imperative to continuously improve water productivity and adopt adaptive management, rooted in science and innovation, in order to ensure water security and support the sustainable economic development of Morocco. This study used all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the structural dynamics of Ves a 1, a phospholipase from Vespa affinis venom, and its interactions within a lipid membrane environment, both alone and in the presence of the inhibitor voxilaprevir. Simulations conducted over 1 µs for triplicate runs demonstrated system stability and convergence of structural properties. Our findings reveal that Ves a 1 engages in dynamic interactions with the lipid bilayer, involving key regions such as its lids, catalytic triad, and auxiliary site. The presence of voxilaprevir was observed to subtly alter these membrane interaction patterns and influence the enzyme’s catalytic area, reflecting the inhibitor’s impact within its physiological context. These results emphasize the crucial role of the lipid bilayer in shaping enzyme function and highlight voxilaprevir as a promising candidate for further inhibitor development, offering vital insights for rational drug design targeting membrane-associated proteins.
