Background: Academic performance among university students is shaped by multiple factors, especially during examinations. This study aimed to explore the relationship between sleep quality, executive attention, and anxiety to identify potential predictors of academic performance across different academic fields. Method: Fifty-one students, between 19 and 25 years (M = 20.04, SD = 1.11), enrolled in the second year in Medicine (27.5%), Law (39.2%), and Economics (33.3%) programs at a university in Lisbon. The sample has mostly full-time students (98.04%), and female (68.6%). Data collection took place during examination periods and included: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESE), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Stroop Test and Go/No-Go task. Results: Our findings revealed significant differences across academic fields: medical students reported poorer sleep quality, law students demonstrated reduced executive attention, and economics students exhibited better sleep but weaker inhibitory control. Sleep quality and state anxiety significantly predicted academic performance, whereas executive attention did not. Conclusions: These results underscore the importance of addressing sleep hygiene and anxiety management among university students, regardless of academic discipline. Institutional initiatives, including structured stress-reduction programs and educational support services, may equip students with the tools to manage academic pressures and enhance cognitive functioning and overall psychological well-being. Background: The Republic of Korean humidifier disinfectant disaster, involving toxic chemical exposure, constitutes a major social disaster causing severe trauma. While physical and psychological difficulties are documented, this study investigated the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and survivors’ daily life adaptation across children, adolescents, and adults, examining PTSD’s mediating role. Methods: The sample included 834 participants (417 exposed survivors and 417 unaffected individuals), divided into three age groups. PTSD symptoms and life adaptation were measured via self-reports. Multigroup Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was utilized to test the indirect associations among exposure, PTSD symptoms, and life adaptation, and to examine age-group comparisons. Results: Survivors in all age groups reported higher PTSD symptoms and lower adaptive functioning compared to unaffected individuals, with the largest PTSD mean difference found in children and adults. Multigroup SEM confirmed that exposure positively impacted PTSD symptoms, and PTSD symptoms negatively impacted life adaptation across all ages. PTSD symptoms significantly mediated the exposure-life adaptation link in all groups. Critically, the direct effect of exposure on life adaptation was significant only in adults, indicating a full mediation via PTSD symptoms in children and adolescents. Conclusions: Exposure to toxic humidifier disinfectants is linked to life adaptation difficulties through elevated PTSD symptoms. These findings emphasize addressing trauma-related symptoms and suggest the utility of developmentally sensitive psychological interventions. Limitations include reliance on self- and parent-reported measures rather than clinical diagnoses, and the lack of control for external contextual factors (e.g., policy changes, media exposure). In this study, we employ the PLS-SEM modelling approach to explore the socio-psychological drivers of horticulture, citrus, and table grapes Greek farmers to adopt biopesticides, beneficial insects, and/or functional biodiversity practices for pest control. Additionally, we investigate the barriers these farmers face-off when it comes to adoption. We found that overall “openness to innovation” and “general attitudes” have the most substantial, positive, and significant impact on farmers’ intentions for adoption. On the contrary, uncertainty, lack of financial support, and cost were identified as the three key main barriers. Importantly, our analysis emphasizes the need for tailored-made policies. Background: Polyneuropathies impair sensory, motor, and autonomic functions, affecting functional status, cognition, and quality of life. This pilot study investigated the effects of exergame with biofeedback training (Riablo system) versus standard rehabilitation on these outcomes in outpatients with mixed-etiology polyneuropathies. Methods: Seventeen outpatients were assigned to standard rehabilitation (Group 1, n = 9) or combined standard plus Riablo training (Group 2, n = 8) over three weeks. Functional status, pain, cognition, quality of life, and psychological well-being were assessed pre- and post-intervention, with a 6-month follow-up. Outcome measures included the Morse Fall Scale, Visual Analogue Scales for pain and autonomy, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Trail Making Test (TMT), Stroop Test, Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), Verbal fluency test, the Short-Form Health Survey-12 (SF-12), and the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4). Longitudinal changes and between-group differences were analyzed using nonparametric statistics. Results: Both groups showed significant improvements in functional status and global cognition at post-intervention. Group 2 demonstrated greater improvements in executive functions and attention, with significant reductions in pain and fall risk. At 6-month follow-up, Group 2 maintained post-intervention gains in QoL and psychological outcomes, while Group 1 showed a significant decline. Technology evaluation revealed high usability and positive psychosocial impact in Group 2, with strong correlations between executive function improvements and device usability. Conclusions: Integrating exergames with biofeedback into standard rehabilitation may provide broader and longer-lasting benefits for polyneuropathy patients. These findings support further large-scale trials to confirm efficacy and optimize technology-assisted rehabilitation protocols. Full article

Major depressive disorder (MDD), identified by the World Health Organization as the leading cause of disability worldwide, remains underdiagnosed due to the lack of objective diagnostic tools. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals offer potential biomarkers, yet conventional analyses often overlook the brain’s nonlinear dynamics. In this study, we analyzed resting-stage EEG data to identify four microstate types in MDD patients. Symmetrical microstate–brain networks were then constructed for each microstate by using time series of four types of microstates as dynamic windows. Then, we compared microstate features (duration, occurrence, coverage, transition probability) and brain network parameters (clustering coefficient, characteristic path length, local and global efficiency) between MDD patients and healthy controls to analyze the characteristics of the changes in the brain activities of the patients with MDD and the topological patterns of the functional connectivity. The comparative analysis showed that MDD patients showed more frequent microstate transitions and reduced network efficiency, suggesting elevated energy consumption and impaired neural integration, which may imply a cognitive shift in MDD patients toward internal focus and psychological withdrawal from external stimuli. By integrating microstate and brain network features, we captured the temporal and spatial characteristics of MDD-related brain activity and validated their diagnostic utility using our previously proposed multiscale spatiotemporal convolutional attention network (MSCAN). Our MSCAN achieved an accuracy of 98.64% for MDD detection, outperforming existing approaches. Our study can offer promising implications for the intelligent diagnosis of MDD and a deeper understanding of its neurophysiological underpinnings. Full article

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has been widely applied in clinical contexts; however, its systematic adaptation to elite sports, particularly precision-based disciplines such as shooting, remains underexplored. The present study aimed to develop and preliminarily validate an ACT-based psychological training program—the Acceptance and Commitment Performance Training for Shooters (ACPT-S)—by reframing ACT from a therapeutic intervention into a performance-oriented training framework. Using a multiphase formative evaluation design, a needs assessment was first conducted with 28 elite and collegiate shooters to identify sport-specific psychological demands. Based on these findings, a ten-session ACPT-S program was developed by integrating the six core ACT processes with shooter-specific routines, embodied exercises, and performance-relevant metaphors. The program was subsequently examined through two pilot studies: Phase 1 with four collegiate/corporate athletes and Phase 2 with 15 national-level shooters. Data were collected via session reflections, focus group interviews, and expert panel evaluations, and the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) analysis was used to assess conceptual clarity and implementation feasibility. The results indicated that ACPT-S was perceived as both feasible and contextually appropriate, with athletes reporting improvements in attentional focus, emotional acceptance, value-based motivation, and reduced anxiety. Qualitative analyses demonstrated strong engagement with ACT principles and their functional integration into shooting performance contexts, while all program components achieved CVR scores of ≥0.80, indicating a strong expert consensus. Program refinements were guided by feedback related to activity sequencing, metaphor resonance and personalization strategies. Overall, this study reconceptualizes ACT as a performance-enhancement framework rather than a purely clinical approach and introduces the ACPT-S as a novel, theory-driven, and scalable psychological training model for precision sports, providing a robust foundation for future longitudinal and comparative research. Rural communities in China are currently confronting persistent socio-economic and demographic pressures, making the pursuit of long-term sustainability increasingly essential. Enhancing community resilience is widely recognized as a core pathway toward sustainable rural development, yet the socio-psychological mechanisms through which rural public spaces contribute to this process remain underexplored. This study proposes an environmental perception → psychological identity → community resilience framework to clarify how public spaces support sustainable community development. Using survey data from 283 residents across five villages in Zhejiang Province and employing PLS-SEM for empirical analysis, we find that positive perceptions of public spaces significantly enhance community resilience both directly and indirectly through cultural identity and place attachment. A sequential mediation effect is also observed: environmental perception strengthens cultural identity, which subsequently deepens place attachment, jointly promoting resilience. These findings reveal that rural public spaces function as socio-cultural infrastructures that cultivate emotional bonds and collective identity, thereby generating key components of social sustainability. The study contributes to sustainable rural planning by demonstrating that improving public space quality and reinforcing place-based identity processes are vital strategies for fostering resilient and sustainable communities. Background/Objectives: Emotional and behavioral difficulties are common during adolescence and have lasting implications for well-being. Although several psychological resources—such as self-efficacy, mindfulness, and reflective functioning—have been individually linked to better adjustment, less is known about how these strengths jointly relate to perceived stress, difficulties, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study aimed to develop and test an integrative structural model capturing the interplay of these factors during early and mid-adolescence. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 395 adolescents (222 girls, 173 boys; aged 10–16 years) who completed self-report questionnaires assessing HRQoL (KIDSCREEN-10), emotional–behavioral difficulties (SDQ), perceived stress (PSS), self-efficacy (GSE), mindfulness (CAMM), and reflective functioning (RFQY-5). After descriptive analyses and correlation testing, the structural path model using observed variables examined how these variables were interrelated. Multi-group analyses assessed whether structural pathways were invariant across gender and age groups. Results: Mindfulness, self-efficacy, and reflective functioning were each indirectly associated with better HRQoL, mainly through lower perceived stress and fewer emotional–behavioral difficulties. Perceived stress showed a strong positive association with difficulties, and both constructs uniquely predicted lower HRQoL. The overall pattern of associations was fully consistent across age and broadly comparable across gender. Conclusions: The findings highlight the interconnected role of psychological resources, stress, and emotional–behavioral difficulties in adolescents’ well-being. However, the cross-sectional design, convenience sampling, reliance on self-report measures, and single-country sample limit the generalizability and causal interpretation of the results. The robustness of these pathways across age and their broad comparability across gender underscore their developmental relevance and suggest that programs aimed at strengthening socio-emotional competences may be meaningfully applied to support adolescents’ well-being already from early adolescence. Tourette syndrome (TS), or Tourette’s, is a tic disorder (TD) belonging to a group of neuropsychiatric conditions marked by recurrent motor movements or vocalizations known as tics. TD, including TS, typically begins in childhood between 4 and 18 years of age and affects approximately 3% of children and adolescents. The etiology and pathogenesis of TD are multifactorial, involving genetic, immunologic, psychological, and environmental factors. Evidence suggests that neurotransmitter dysregulation, particularly within the cortical dopaminergic networks of the basal ganglia and limbic system, which support motor control and cognition, may be involved in the development of TD. Nutritional factors may modulate TD through various mechanisms, including effects on neurotransmitter synthesis and metabolism, neurodevelopment, neural architecture, and neuroimmune activity. This review integrates current evidence on the roles of vitamins D, B6, and A, as well as iron, magnesium, zinc, and copper, in TD. For each micronutrient, its physiological and neurobiological functions are discussed, along with possible mechanistic links to TD pathophysiology. Additionally, we summarize the impact of nutrient deficiencies and assess available evidence regarding their potential therapeutic potential role in TD management. Overall, this synthesis highlights how nutritional status may influence TD onset and symptom severity, suggesting that nutrient-based interventions could potentially serve as valuable adjunctive strategies in treatment. Background/Objectives: Beyond respiratory problems, COVID-19 can cause a variety of symptoms, such as neurological disorders caused by biological and psychological factors. Brain fog (BF), a post-illness cognitive impairment that many patients report, can be evaluated with reaction time (RT) testing. Response latency is measured by RT, which can be either simple (sRT) or complex (cRT). This study focuses on how COVID-19 affects cognitive function, with particular attention on RT changes, BF prevalence, and implications for daily life. Methods: The study included 599 participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia. RT was measured using PsyToolkit and participants completed a COVID-19-associated BF questionnaire. Participants who experienced BF after their latest COVID-19 infection rated its severity using a visual analogue scale (VAS). Additional clinical data were obtained from medical records. Results: BF was reported by 40% of participants post-COVID-19. Men reported it less frequently but found it more disruptive. RT progressively declined post-infection, reaching peak impairment at 15 weeks, following recovery, with RT normalizing by six months. Conclusions: COVID-19 is linked to temporary RT impairment, peaking at 15 weeks post-infection and resolving by six months, independent of BF presence. This study emphasizes the need for a biopsychosocial approach to BF management. Easily available RT assessments should be incorporated into routine clinical practice. Full article

Rapid urbanization has intensified the demand for street designs that reconcile ecological quality with positive human experiences, particularly in high-density cities such as Tianjin, China. Streets function as key interfaces where ecological processes, social activities and human perception intersect. However, existing research tends to emphasize the amount of greenery while overlooking its structural characteristics, to treat perception as a psychological response decoupled from spatial context, and to make limited use of fine-grained functional data to examine how ecology and perception interact. This study develops an integrated analytical framework that combines the DeepLabV3+ model to extract the Urban Street Greenery Generalized Structure (USGGS) from Baidu Street View imagery with a vision transformer model trained on the Place Pulse 2.0 dataset to derive multidimensional perceptual metrics. Functional diversity is represented using point-of-interest (POI) data, and an enhanced Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) model is employed to explore associations among greenery structure, perceived qualities and functional characteristics. Analyses of six urban districts in Tianjin indicate that ecological and perceived street qualities are closely related to the degree of coupling between vegetation structure and functional diversity. Streets characterized by multi-layered greenery and diverse, active functions tend to exhibit higher perceived aesthetics, safety and vitality, whereas streets with single-layer vegetation or functionally monotonous environments generally do not perform as well. Functional patterns appear to mediate relationships between greening and perception by shaping how ecological form is experienced through everyday social activities. Overall, the results suggest that closer coordination between ecological design and functional organization is important for fostering urban streets that combine environmental resilience with strong perceived appeal. Green roofs have emerged as a key nature-based solution for improving environmental quality, strengthening urban resilience, and enhancing human wellbeing. In the hospitality sector—where sustainable design and guest experience increasingly intersect—the incorporation of green roof gardens is particularly significant. Urban hotels face heightened challenges related to elevated temperatures, reduced green space, and the growing need for restorative environments within dense urban settings. This study aims to examine how green roof gardens function as integrated ecological, social, and psychological infrastructures in hotel environments. It evaluates the extent to which rooftop green spaces contribute to environmental sustainability, enhance guest experience, and foster community connections. The research adopts a qualitative design combining a comprehensive literature review conducted at selected five-star hotels in Greece. Data from secondary sources and field-based assessments were thematically analyzed to identify recurring patterns in environmental performance, social use, and psychological benefits. Findings indicate that hotel green roof gardens act as multifunctional systems that deliver significant ecological benefits—such as improved microclimate regulation, stormwater retention, and biodiversity support—while simultaneously enriching social interaction and guest experience through accessible, esthetically appealing spaces. Observations further highlight their contribution to psychological wellbeing by offering restorative environments characterized by greenery, natural light, and panoramic views. The study concludes that green roof gardens represent an effective design strategy that integrates sustainability, hospitality experience, and urban wellbeing. Their application in hotels provides both conceptual insight and practical guidance for the development of more resilient, livable, and guest-centered urban environments. This research proposes a composite machine learning (ML) framework for real-time response to negative online reviews, grounded in the psychological principle of negative reinforcement. By integrating K-means clustering to group reviews by thematic similarity and bidirectional encoder representations from transformer (BERT)-based sentiment analysis to assess emotional tone, and the system identifies high-risk clusters requiring marketing intervention. Customized response strategies are designed based on cluster sentiment intensity, and their effectiveness can be evaluated via sentiment transformation functions. The proposed model provides a practical and adaptive approach to digital marketing, enabling brands to respond rapidly, reduce dissatisfaction, and enhance consumer trust in a data-driven environment. Quick visual balance perception in layouts is essential for a positive user experience. However, existing computational models often struggle to accurately capture this key aesthetic aspect, particularly in interfaces with asymmetric elements. This paper introduces Visual Moment Equilibrium (VME), a new cognitive model that redefines visual balance as a unified perceptual force field, similar to moment equilibrium in physical systems. Based on principles from Gestalt psychology, spatial cognition, and psychophysics, we incorporate three main innovations: (1) a Measured Balance index enhanced with psychophysical transformations to enable sensitive quantification of visual imbalance; (2) a nine-grid visual weighting system combined with Manhattan distance to reflect human attentional distribution and non-Euclidean spatial reasoning; and (3) a Shape Sparsity Ratio with a piecewise compensation function that formally operationalizes the Gestalt principle of closure, especially for irregular visual elements. Validation against human perceptual benchmarks from the Analytic Hierarchy Process shows that the VME model has a strong correlation with expert judgments regarding regular interfaces (Pearson’s r = 0.942, accounting for 88.8% of the variance), outperforming the widely used model (33.9%). VME also maintains high predictive accuracy for irregular interfaces (r = 0.890), emphasizing its wide applicability across various design configurations. Full article

In university campus design, the relationship between spatial elements and students’ sense of belonging has attracted growing interest. However, existing research tends to examine isolated space types rather than the integrated psychological experience of the campus as a whole. To holistically understand how campus space influences belonging, it is essential to investigate how—and to what extent—campus spatial satisfaction shapes students’ sense of belonging. The prevalent semi-enclosed management model of most Chinese university campuses offers a distinct context for examining how satisfaction with functional spaces affects this sense of belonging. This study investigates the relationship between students’ satisfaction with functional spaces and their sense of campus belonging through a multidimensional evaluation framework and comparative quantitative analysis. The findings demonstrate that (1) campus belonging is influenced not by the simple accumulation of satisfaction with individual space types but by four underlying behavioral dimensions—diversity of extended activities, residential comfort, learning convenience, and transportation comfort—which collectively explain approximately 50% of the variance in belonging; (2) the overall campus spatial layout significantly moderates the satisfaction–belonging relationship, with integrated residential-activity configurations promoting spontaneous use and strengthening belonging; and (3) among personal attributes, behavioral factors such as internet usage and physical activity patterns exhibit stronger effects than demographic variables. These results highlight the importance of a holistic, behavior-oriented approach to campus planning to enhance students’ psychological adaptation and sense of belonging. Full article
